Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion -diced
  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper* -optional
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 (15 oz.) can petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 (16 oz.) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce

Instructions

  • Add the olive oil to a large soup pot and place it over medium-high heat for two minutes. Add the onion. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef to the pot. Break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6-7 minutes, until the beef is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the chili powder, cumin, sugar, tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and optional cayenne. Stir until well combined.
  • Add the broth, diced tomatoes (with their juice), drained beans, and tomato sauce. Stir well.
  • Bring the liquid to a low boil. Then, reduce the heat (low to medium-low) to gently simmer the chili, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Let the chili rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

I typically skip the cayenne pepper because I have a young kiddo. Ā Then, I put out some hot sauce for those adults that want to add some spiciness to their chili.

I’ve made this delicious chili several times, the only change I made was instead of garlic powder I use fresh garlic, I always have plenty around so I minced 2 but I’m sure the powder is just fine. I also omitted the sugar ( made once with the sugar and family didn’t care for it, too sweet) other than that perfect, simple, and the ingredients I always have handy in my pantry!
All I buy is the meat and some tortillas.

  2. 3 stars
It would have been a great recipe if you don’t add the sugar in until later after you taste it. The amount of sugar it calls for just makes it too sweet. Wait until you see what the heat level is and then add your sugar in. A whole pot got ruined and there wasn’t any saving it. Other than that, it was very simple and easy to make.

OMG! My first time EVER making chili and it’s the Bomb! Love, love , LOVE! this simple yet very flavorful recipe. I’ve looked for a recipe, on and off, all winter that didn’t require a entire day to cook. I like chili but not that much. I always eat others chili.
I made recipe as is with one exception. I used water instead of the broth because watching my sodium intake but I was generous with the spices! I love heat and flavor! Also didn’t use sugar this go around. Craving spicy chili even though there are times I like my chili a little sweet and spicy.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I’m done looking. I found my chili recipe!

    Thank you Amanda!

This chili is the best I’ve ever had!! I swapped ground beef for Impossible Ground ā€œBeefā€ and it I swear it came out just as good. I highly recommend this recipe for anyone looking for the perfect balance of sweet and savory chili

  5. 5 stars
I won a chili cookoff at work with this recipe by substituting Lee Kum Kee chili garlic sauce for cayenne pepper. Topped it with grated cheese, bacon bits and chopped scallion greens (for St Patricks Day). They loved it! Thank you for a great recipe!

Fabulous homemade chili. Very rare for me to comment, but here we are.. I struggled to find the perfect chili recipe for 30 years. Why is it so hard to find old fashioned recipes? Sooo, we ate the whole pot in one meal. And family told me that I didn’t make enough. So I will double in the future. My little tweaks are to add a little wine to taste after cooking tomato paste and spices. Then about a TBS of vinegar at the end of cooking. Balances flavors. Make sure that you like the taste of your brand chili powder and tomatoes first. Makes a huge difference. Add chili powder a little at a time, tasting as I go. I like juicy chili. Not dry or soupy. So I don’t use broth, cuts salt. I use water as needed. Leave out the sugar. Preferences is your best friend.

This is really good and is just like what Mom and then I used to make! Not sure why I started going fancy on the chili!!
I do however typically use real maple syrup in place of the sugar or half and half. Just cuts that acid a little bit.

  7. 5 stars
Wonderful recipe…….tasted greatšŸ˜‹ā€¦..I did lower the amount of sugar…..and I did use the cayenne. Thanks for the recipeā¤ļø

  8. 5 stars
It’s so good! Full of flavor (I didn’t add the cayenne) and excellent consistency. This was my first time making chili but I’m so glad I picked this recipe! I absolutely love it and will definitely be making it again! Thanks for sharing!

    1. 5 stars
Excellent! I have to agree with a few others that it was a bit too sweet for my and my husband’s taste. Will probably leave out next time, but there WILL be a next time! He thought there was too much cumin, but I liked the flavor a lot. Used the cayenne and heat was just right. Thank you very much for sharing with us.

  9. 5 stars
The chili was absolutely delicious. I’m glad I didn’t have any cayenne pepper. I used brown sugar.
    Thanks for the great recipe.

I’m renting a holiday home and supplies and utensils are limited. Having friends from home. Stay so I wanted something easy and not a lot of ingredients
This is PERFECT! I only used 1 1/2 Chile powder but I shall borrow the suggestion in the comments and put the hot sauce out just in case they would like it spicer
    Very nice dish. Thankyou

    1. 5 stars
So so good. I did have to make a couple of adjustments, I used actual garlic instead of garlic powder (3 cloves, I love garlic) and I did a bell pepper instead of beans. I also added 2 jalapeƱos!
I added the cayenne and after adding the recipe amount of spices I added more by heart feel haha

  11. 5 stars
Tried this recipe for 1st time making chili from scratch; not using a box or envelope. It was delicious. I should have doubled the recipe because it was all gone with my husband, son & I being the only persons eating. So simple to make.

  12. 5 stars
I haven’t stopped making this recipe. Love it. I add mushrooms and corn kernels and reduce broth to 1 cup. Love it.

  13. 5 stars
Love this recipe. Being from the southwest, I use two cans of Rotel and also add jalapeƱos. It’s a fast and easy recipe and delicious!

  14. 5 stars
This is such a great recipe! I did add a red bell pepper other than followed it exactly. Everyone loved it. Will double it next time for leftovers.

  15. 5 stars
So good! I didn’t have tomato sauce but I had some spicy salsa so I halved the amount of chili powder and cumin and left out the cayenne pepper. Still had plenty of kick to it!

  16. 5 stars
Definitely one of the best recipes I’ve tried but I would definitely put less of the chili powder

  17. I just added 2 green peppers and some Tabasco sauce. I had over 2 lbs of beef so I made some adjustments on the liquids. Was very good. Served with garlic bread. Thank you!

  18. 5 stars
I just won 2nd place out of 16 at a church chili cook off with this recipe! I added smoked paprika and chili lime seasoning.

  19. 5 stars
My husband does most of the cooking in our house. After I made this chili he said I had to cook whenever we have chili. The chili was fantastic! My daughter and her boyfriend also loved it. Delicious!

  20. 4 stars
I made this chili tonight. I used 1.5 lbs of ground beef (because that’s what I had) and I added 2 extra cans of beans. Those were the only changes I made to the recipe. I was surprised at how hot it came out. I love spicey and I love hot but this was almost inedible for me. I know it would be for anyone else I know. I am surprised I am the only one to say anything in the comments/reviews. Is it really supposed to be 2.5 tablespoons of chili powder and 2 tablespoons of cumin? Or should it read 2.5 teaspoons of chili powder and 2 teaspoons of cumin? Something was way off to cause it to have this much heat. Otherwise it tasted good but I had to add some cream cheese just to cut through some of the heat so I could eat it. I can’t imagine how hot it would be if I hadn’t added extra ground beef and beans.

    1. 5 stars
Chili power shouldn’t add heat- nor does cumin. Maybe you used cayenne pepper instead of chili powder?

  21. 5 stars
Excellent chili recipe. I had a 50/50 lean beef and venison hamburger that I used along with Penzey’s Chilli 3000 spice blend that has cumin with the chili powder for the recipe. I was able to use our diced garden bell peppers, tomato sauce and stewed tomatoes and it turned out excellent. I will definitely make it again. The addition of the 2 TBS of sugar with the 1 TBS of garlic powder add some nice flavor accents to it. I did however hold back on the recipe salt recommended because of family sodium restrictions. Great chili!!!

  22. 5 stars
I have made this chili twice now. The second time I added cooked, small red beans to the kidney beans. I feel like this is teaditional from our California parents! It is our tradition now! My family at home is from 9 years old to 79 years old. Everyone loves it. Thank you.

  23. 4 stars
Hubby really liked it. It was too spicy for me, even without the cayenne. Next time I might use half as much chili powder.

    1. 5 stars
Our family Absolutely love this recipe. I ALWAYS make a double batch The only thing I changed up is , instead of kidney beans I add one can of chili beans, one can of black beans and one 4 ounce can of diced green chilies. Otherwise the recipe is followed to the T. Makes going through winter that more desirable. 🤪

  24. Delicious chili! I have made it 3-4 times now. I do not use tomatoe paste but use a little more tomatoe sauce than the recipe calls for. I cut the sugar down to about 1 tablespoon. I use 1 tsp.chopped organic garlic with about 1 tablespoon of garlic power. Top it with organic shredded sharp cheddar cheese and I have a meal that I can feast on that helps keep me warm during our historic California storms this winter.

  25. 5 stars
Easy, delicious and economical for a crowd. I served over rice and offered cheese, tabasco and sour cream for toppings. Left overs reheat well.

  26. 5 stars
Thank you for this Great recipe! It tastes delicious and it very quick and easy to make. It’s the only chili I make now and my family of 5 ( including 3 kids under 13) love it. I skip the cayenne, half the cumin and beans, add a red, yellow, or orange bell pepper and serve with noodles or crackers just for our preferences but it was perfect exactly as written.

  27. 5 stars
This is probably the best chili recipe I have ever made! My family loves chili and I’m always looking for a good recipe and I finally found it! This chili is delicious! Make it!!

  28. 5 stars
Amazing and so delicious. I had never made Chili in my life and my husband who loves Chili was so in love! Very yummy!

  29. 5 stars
This recipe is delicious!! Like I printed it out and added it to my recipe keeper to be made again & again delicious!!
    Slight changes I made:
-Added a diced red pepper – added when cooking the onion
    -Omitted the sugar
    -Reduced chili powder to 1/2tsp
-Added a heaping tbsp of flour at the end to thicken.

    Enjoy!!!

  30. 5 stars
This is probably my 10th time making this chili. The seasoning so on point! It’s fantastic and if I could rate it higher than 5 stars I would. I now have to double the recipe because my husband loves it so much he wants more left overs.

Thanks so much for the top notch recipe!

  31. 5 stars
I love this recipe! It is my go-to for chili night. It is very versatile and the whole family enjoys it. I like to pack it full of extra veggies (peppers, celery, carrots and a can of mixed for good measure) and find that a little less than 1/8 tsp of cayenne is perfect to satisfy everyone and both my 8 and 10-year old can tolerate that little bit of heat. I also use an extra 1/2 cup of beef broth. We finish it off with a top of cheddar cheese and some tortilla chips. No matter what I do to it, it always turns out great!

  32. 5 stars
My late wife was the chili maker. So this was the first chili made myself. VERY impressed and loved!!
this will be my go to recipe from now on. Thank you.

  33. 5 stars
Love this recipe!! I did add a can of white beans and corn to the pot. Served with corn bread and cheddar cheese. Will definitely make again.

  34. 5 stars
GREAT recipe, i did substitute Deer burger for hamburger i also added 2 more cans of dark red kidney beans, i like lots of beans !! its a keeper. i usually make my own chilli with a lil this N that but by the time i get it looking exactly how i want it i have to start putting stuff into a second pot, (then i have to add a lil more meat ect to fill 2nd pot up, it happens EVERYTIME ! Ive decided to find a good recipe and follow it so i dont end up with 2 whole pots and it worked perfectly !! delicious chilli, thank you for sharing..

  35. 5 stars
This was such an easy recipe, and it smells so good! I added green and red peppers, as well as corn, just to spice it up a bit.
    So delic!! Thanks for sharing!

  36. 5 stars
I modified a National chili cook off winning recipe and have used it for years. Wifey wanted a simple, quick chili so I tried this one. No joke, it’s better than the one I usually make that takes way more time. This is my new standard. Added more paste and stock to get the consistency I like.

  37. 5 stars
this is the best Chili I have ever made ,and I’m pretty old,Ive made many pots! i used minced garlic and organic paste and canned tomotoes. honestly. this is fantastic .

  38. 5 stars
I don’t usually leave comments, but this was a BIG hit in our household. My 2 year old decided that she ā€œloves Chili.ā€ Thanks for the quick and easy recipe!

  39. 5 stars
My family just love this recipe. I used half the sugar as I’m not a big fan of sweet chili and it was perfect.

  40. 5 stars
used this recipe to make chili for the first time and it was a hit !! I have made it like 5 more times and its still perfect ! <333

  41. 5 stars
I made this recipe for our local homeless shelter as well as for my husband. It was the most delicious chili I have ever made. Just excellent.

  42. 5 stars
This has been our favorite chili recipe since I discovered it almost 4 years ago. Guests always compliment it and go for seconds.

I like to use chili powder and cayenne, but skip the sugar because of food restrictions for some family members. Once, I didn’t have enough chili powder so I used some Hot Mexican Chili Powder and it was just as delicious! When I made it again the other night, I used half of that and half of the regular. Everybody loved it and said it was their favorite!

  43. 5 stars
Hi Amanda, I am so glad to find you. Your chilli was a hit the whole family loved it. I can’t wait to explore. In your website to find other treasures.!

  44. 5 stars
Excellent chili recipe! My family said this was the best chili ever. However, I did make the following changes – used two cans of kidney beans instead of 1, up the beef broth to 2 cups, and increased tomato paste to being 1 small can.

  45. I’ve always used Williams Chili Seasoning, but didn’t want to go to the store. I had everything for this recipe in my pantry, so tried it. It was delicious. Not going back to a premade mix!

  46. 5 stars
This is the best chili recipe I’ve ever made! It has a nice, rich flavor! Oh, I also added a little minced garlic but it probably didn’t need it.

  47. 5 stars
I added about 1 1/2 tsp of worchteshire to it and a dash more of garlic and onion powder and cumin. Without my added it was still delicious as is!!!

  48. 5 stars
This recipe is exactly as described…The Best Classic Chili! Like my mom used to make, but sorry mom, this one is actually even yummier. This is our new go-to chili recipe. Thank you!

  49. 5 stars
Sometimes I get two pots going at once: I follow the same steps in each, except in one pot, I exclude the meat and replace the beef broth with vegetable broth. Both are fantastic! I’ve made this recipe a dozen times, and it’s always the BEST chili recipe I’ve ever encountered! For my taste, I sometimes use less cumin so it has a flavor more similar to what I grew up with in the Midwest.

  50. 5 stars
Delicious! For thirty years, I have made different chili recipes, looking for a permanent recipe that everyone in the family loves. This is it. The first time I try a recipe, I follow the recipe exactly. I have tried many, many chili recipes-with green peppers, with red wine vinegar, with chocolate. All those were good. This recipe was great, as is. Finally!! Writing it down in the family cookbook.

  51. 5 stars
Great recipe, but just a bit too much cumin – but that’s my personal preference. Will make it again, but will cut the cumin in half.

  52. Hi I did not have any cumin will that make a big difference in the taste of is there something I can substitute for it thank you

  53. 5 stars
This was soo delicious!! Very easy to follow. I did not add the cayenne because I don’t like spicy foods, but this chili had plenty of flavor without it. Will definitely make this again.

  54. 5 stars
I really liked the flavor and ease of this dish. I was very nervous about adding a whole teaspoon of cayenne pepper, but I did. And it was perfect. I only used 2 1/2 TBS of sugar because I didn’t want it to be too sweet. But next time I will use the 3 TBS and make as written. Then the balance between the pepper and the sugar will be right on. This is the first recipe I’ve made from The Wholesome Dish and I will not doubt your ingredient measurements again! I will mention that the key to a very flavorful sauce is to make sure you drain the fat. I put the sauce into a fat separator measuring cup and then I don’t have to worry. Also, look for the very best short ribs you can find. If they are too fatty it will spoil the meal, in my opinion. Thank you and enjoy!

  55. 5 stars
This is one of the best chili recipes I have ever tried. The ingredients are awesome, the consistency is perfect and it truly is a classic timeless chili

  56. 5 stars
This is the best Chili recipe ever! My husband and I love it I’m glad I made a big pot I just doubled all the ingredients. We like spicy food do I did add red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper and hot sauce and wow sooooo good I will be making this chili again.

  57. 5 stars
I’m not a big chili fan , but my husband is. He would eat it daily, if he could. He thought that this was a perfect batch of chili!

    I’m saving this recipe.

  58. 5 stars
I have tried a lot of Chili Recipes, but this one is not only easy, it taste great. I added some red pepper flakes, we like it with a little more heat. GREAT!!

  59. 5 stars
Absolutely brilliant recipe mince is difficult to get right.just the flavors the mince tends to
Come out with the strongest taste even though I always buy steak mince šŸ‘

  60. 5 stars
Excellent and truly classic tasting chili recipe! I only strayed from the recipe as written just a tiny bit. I browned the beef in a separate pan so that I could control the heat level and get it good and crusty brown, and drained it before adding to the onions. And I used great northern beans rather than kidney because I prefer the texture. But other than that I made it as written and it’s fast to make and tasted amazing.

  61. 5 stars
Love your recipe. I now know it by heart. I use much more cayenne than you called for. We like the chili a bit Spicer. And cayenne adds flavor besides the heat.

  62. 5 stars
I did this but doubled the recipe. I did 1 lb lean ground beef, 1 lb ground pork, 1 lb of chopped andouille sausage. Also added a can of drained corn. Turned out great!

  63. 5 stars
This IS the best classic chili recipe and it is very forgiving. I’ve been looking for a recipe like this for years.
My son suggested we make chili on a cold afternoon after school. He found this recipe online. We doubled the recipe but only had 1 lb meat so added 2 cans (pinto and aduki) of beans. Then I was nervous to add so much chili and cumin seasoning and lessened both by 1 Tbsp. I also skipped the tomato paste and halved the salt to be easier on my stomach.
The result: our favorite Chili recipe.
    Thank you Amanda Finks!!!

  64. 5 stars
I have made numerous homemade chili recipes but this one has topped them all. I am from Texas and I can tell you that this recipe is definitely worth making!!!

  65. 5 stars
This is our favorite! When we plan on making it we call it ā€œbomb-ass chili nightā€. I love that this recipe makes it so easy to make it your own. I enjoy making it a sort of Tex style by adding 1/4th teaspoon chipotle powder, white corn, and a small can of those Ortega green chilis. We like it hot hot. So I also add a Serrano and jalapeƱo after all the seasonings. Instead of regular diced tomatoes, we use fire roasted garlic.

  66. 5 stars
I’m not a huge chili fan, but my hubby loves it so I decided to try to make him some. This was so easy to make and tastes fantastic! Since I’m not a fan of spicy foods, the sugar gave it a subtle sweetness which toned down the spice and made it absolutely amazing… and actually made me a chili lover!! This recipe will definitely a keeper….

  67. 5 stars
I’ve tried numerous recipes for an easy chili and this is the one I will always make! So good! I used the whole small can of tomato paste (skipped tomato sauce) and added an additional 1/2 c of beef broth. I also added a can of drained black beans. We love thick chili. Thank you so much.

  68. 5 stars
I make this recipe all the time. The only thing I do differently is I add about 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon and about a tbsp. of peanut butter. My wife and I love the small amount of heat from the cinnamon and the peanut butter and a bit of a nutty flavor.

  69. 5 stars
Delicious 🤤. It’s -7 degrees here in Boston so I made this for my kiddos & Hubby for dinner today, we just added frito pie toppings. Thanks for this meal šŸ½ļø.

  70. I just made this recipe!! It is delicious!!! So excited!! I just started cooking and baking everyday. I love doing it .. I am on a health kick trying to lose weight! I had no idea that you have to eat to lose weight until recently!! Now I eat little meals throughout the day! This is perfect for that! Yum!!!!!

  71. 5 stars
Fabulous! Usually chili is an all afternoon event and I’ve found quicker recipes don’t pack the same punch but this was ridiculously delicious! I added the 1/4 tsp cayanne and ended up putting in 7 more oz of tomato sauce, 1 more tbsp of tomato paste, and an additional can of beans (mixed it up with black beans) to cut the spice and add more texture. Totally melds in a half hour and clean up was a breeze. Bravo!!!

  72. 5 stars
šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„ absolutely fantastic recipe. I followed the directions precisely. Turn out perfect on first try! Family very happy! Yummy.

  73. 5 stars
Fast and easy – all with ingredients most people have in their pantry. And versatile! As long as you use her base of spices and sauces, you can add many other things (green chiles, jalapeƱos, etc). I’m a pretty staunch ā€œno sugarā€ in my tomato based sauces but it definitely works in this recipe. The only change I made was using 2 cans of beans (black and white northern as that’s what I had). Yummy – much better than McCormick or French’s chili seasoning pkgs. Thanks for the recipe – already saved.

  74. 5 stars
One of the best chili recipes I’ve ever made. Back in the mid eighties, there was a bar/restaurant named Remey’s in Hilton Head. My husband and I loved their chili. This is the closest I’ve ever come to duplicating it. I think it is the cumin which is more than traditional recipes. Made it again tonight and so so good. Five stars from me and a big thank you for this recipe!

  75. 5 stars
I love chili…really love chili. This is one of the best recipes that I have tried. I did decrease the sugar to 2 teaspoons…my husband would havenoticed more…and doubled the canned tomatoes bc I could not find any tomato sauce. But it was fantastic. Thank you!

  76. Best chili recipe ever!!! Me and the kids love it and my 11 year old son who is very picky btw said that it’s the only chili I’m allowed to make now lol!

  77. 5 stars
This was an easy recipe to make. I followed it to a T as far as the ingredients go, and I found it a little salty, If you add a little bit more water that should take care of it and it’s really good. I made a double batch of this and it was gone and within 24 hours.

  78. 5 stars
I love this recipe for making chili and I can understand how it gets 5 stars. I have printed it out and made it many times. What I love about it is that I do not use many pans and the spice mix is spot on! However, I have made a couple of tweaks that I want to share that work for me. In no way am I saying there is anything wrong with this delicious recipe!

    1. I changed this to a crock pot recipe so I can have it cook all day long. I add the beans to the cock pot and add the mixture of all the other ingredients after it has been cooked. I can then cook it on low for 8 hours (I maybe stir it once an hour).
    2. I added a can of garbanzo bean (drained), and a can of chili bean in chili sauce (whole can). (I like more beans.)
    3. I got rid of adding the tomato sauce and just added a whole 6 oz can of tomato paste. (The small cans are much easier to find and store than tubes of tomato paste and it costs less. Also, I do not like having half used cans of tomato paste in my fridge.)
    4. I will sometimes use ground turkey instead of ground beef and I do not stick steadfast to the 1 pound. (I will sometimes use a whole package of Costco ground turkey which is 1.7 lbs.). I have found that the spice mixture of this recipe compensates A LOT for the quality of meat as I even use a 1 lbs tube of frozen turkey meat from Aldi’s and the chili is still awesome.

Thank you SO much for this chili recipe. I really appreciate it!

Wow! So much flavor! Followed your recipe just added 1/2 cup of corona beer! This recipe is easy and delicious it’s a keeper! Thank you!

  80. 5 stars
The only chili I now make. My family loved it! I added an extra can of red beans as we like a lot of beans. So much flavor.

  81. 5 stars
I tried your chili. I didn’t change a thing.. It was amazingšŸ‘.
Easy, simple and full of flavor
Will definitely be my go to chili,
    I give you 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Thank you for sharing.

  82. 5 stars
Wow! This is the best chili I have ever made. Thank for a new go to recipe. The ingredients sounded perfect and although I usually make changes, I did not here and it is perfect! A hit with my man, as well.

    Hello (fellow Hoosier),
Second time I’ve used this recipe. All said, the best and easiest chili recipe I’ve ever cooked. Thank you.
I add frozen corn for the simmer/at the end of recipe and a generous pat of unsalted butter (to take a little edge off the acidity of the tomato ingredients) and round out the taste with a subtle richness.

  84. I make this quite frequently and it’s really a hit in the neighborhood and with friends and relatives as they all want the recipe! I add an ingredient that really adds a lot of flavor. I browned up 12 Italian sweet sausage and slice them up and add them to the chili……try it. Unbelievable!

  85. 5 stars
Tasty indeed. Working primarily with items on hand, I had no cayenne, but added red pepper flakes and a small can of whole kernel corn, and topped with shredded cheddar. Two thumbs up from everyone šŸ‘ šŸ‘Œ

  86. 5 stars
The chili recipe is GREAT!!! Most recipes are under seasoned, this one was perfect. I cut the beef broth and added a can of beer. Thanks for sharing your recipe

Just made this and it’s the basic, delicious chili I was looking for on a 23 degree Vermont night. Quick, economical, easy and customizable for different tastes. I did not add the cayenne.

  88. 5 stars
Loved it! Think i’ll cut back a bit on the sugar next time. Added a bell pepper. Forgot the tomato paste – doh! Didn’t miss it. Will make this again!!! And will definitely check out other Wholesome Dish recipes! Thanks!

  89. 5 stars
Great recipe, cooked this last night and believe it or not had a bowl to warm up this morning for breakfast and it was better than last nights.
Thank you for sharing this recipe.

  90. 5 stars
I added 1 cup of beer, 1/4 tsp of chilli flakes and 1/4 tsp of paprika. It’s now a hit whenever anyone visits my house!!

  91. 5 stars
Very flavorful! I made a double batch, and was short a 1 of the 2 cans of diced tomatoes, so I substituted about 8 oz of ketchup and a fresh šŸ…. I may keep it that way, it os delicious.

  92. 5 stars
My husband and I agreed this was the best chili I had ever made! I did change one thing – I happened to have ingredients that were close, not exact; diced tomatoes “chili ready” and Bush “chili beans” (with sauce). I didn’t add the cayenne pepper because the tomatoes added extra spice. I left it out until we tried it and we thought it was perfect! If you have never made chili – this is the recipe to use. If you’ve made all kinds of varieties and want to get back to basic Sunday football chili – this is the one!

  93. 5 stars
Made the chili recipe, added green pepper and celery it was very good. I would love the recipe for the chocolate chip cookies that are shown on the sign up page!

  94. 5 stars
Ever since I tried this it has been my go to Chili recipe. My son used to say he didn’t like Chili, now he requests it often. It’s easy and the leftovers are great. It never goes to waste.

  95. 5 stars
TL,DR: Excellent chili recipe, flavorful and easy to make with staples you usually have on hand! Borderline too salty and slightly to sweet for my family’s taste as written, but still delicious.
Longer review: I’ve made this recipe 4 times now, the first 2 times I followed the recipe as written except for using a 15 oz can of tomato sauce, as I couldn’t find an 8 oz. (Still turns out nice and thick). We found the recipe wonderful, flavorful, and it comes together fast and easy, which is a huge plus. For our taste buds though, we found it to be a bit salty and slightly too sweet. The third time I made it, I decreased the salt from 1.5 to 1 teaspoon, and the sugar from 2 tablespoons to 1 tablespoon. Near perfection! The fourth time, I kept it at 1 tsp of salt and 1 TBSP of sugar, but also added 2 TBSP of worcestershire sauce. Bingo, we have perfection! The recipe didn’t feel like it was really “missing” anything, but the extra umami provided by the worcestershire gives it a little something extra that has you licking the bowl. I’ve pre-measured a few containers worth of the spice mix to keep on hand, because this has become a family favorite. We serve it with shredded cheddar cheese, and sometimes corn bread.

  96. 5 stars
This is my first critique of a recipe, ever. That’s how good this recipe is!! It’s an all American chili recipe. Love the seasoning as is. As for the thickness, while a little loose first day (which I personally love), leftovers thicken up. Thanks for posting this recipe. I’m so glad I found it!!

  97. 5 stars
This is hands down and by far the BEST homemade chili I’ve ever made. I only make a few slight modifications – I use ground bison instead of regular ground beef, I leave out the sugar and diced tomatoes (my youngest doesn’t care for them), add 2 cans chili beans, and replace the can tomato sauce with my homemade version! I usually double the recipe and it still doesn’t last long. Delish!!

  98. 5 stars
Great chili just the right amount of spices for the entire family. I use a couple tablespoons of cornmeal or masa for a bit of corn flavor and to thicken the chili a bit. So good!

  99. 5 stars
I have spent a lot of time making different chili recipes with 30 ingredients or more– chiptole peppers, different tomato varieties, tons of herbs, roasted bell peppers, beer, wine, you name it.

THIS recipe, simple and tastes as good, but I think better than all those.

If you’re beef isnt 90% lean then drain the fat, then add in oil/onions etc

  100. Very good and easy to follow instructions. Passed on the cayenne because I prefer savory not five alarm hot. Will definitely use this method again.

  101. I use White Kidney Beans instead or Red. This Chilli gives less gas and really has a very pleasant taste. When my Mother was at the cottage and company stopped by for dinner, she would add fresh bean sprouts to stretch the Chilli for the meal.

  102. 5 stars
Are you wondering…why is this the best chili recipe?!?!? I was scared with the amount of cumin so I held back and did half. Not only is this recipe easy, it’s extremely flavorful. I added a carrot and celery stalk. 10/10 would recommend. This was gone sooooo fast in our house. So easy to experiment with and change to your liking too! Very impressed. Excited to make it vegetarian and also try with turkey. Thank you for posting šŸ™‚

  103. 5 stars
Made this for the first time and it’s A-MA-ZING!!! Thank you so much for the recipe!!! I will be making this often!

  104. The Chile was delicious. My husband is chef in our family but I tried this recipe. He loved it and wanted to print recipe.

  105. Made this recipe exactly by the directions, except I used the whole box of beef broth (1 1/2 cups more).Chili didn’t have much taste! What can I add?

  106. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! We doubled the recipe, used both ground beef and ground turkey, and I added one and a half amounts of the seasonings. I served it with shredded Mexican triple cheese, sour cream, a little cilantro and scallions and a side of cornbread! Awesome for a 47 degree day in SOFL!

  107. 5 stars
I’m always on the lookout for a good basic chili recipe. I grew up having it weekly but my dad only used ground meat, kidney beans, chili pepper, hot pepper flakes and tomatoes. In the summer he would make the chili with fresh garden tomatoes and it was really good but kind of bland, the hot pepper flakes didn’t add a good flavor depth, it just made my nose run. Anyway, I doubled this recipe because I like to freeze soups. I didn’t have beef broth so I used water with better than bullion roasted beef base. I only had 1 can of kidney beans so black beans went in as the 2nd can. The tomato combination and beef base created a rich flavor, oh yea… this is a keeper. Next batch I’ll add some bell peppers because I really like them and cut the cumin and sugar in half, maybe add a pinch of oregano.. just my personal preference. Thanks for sharing.

  108. 5 stars
    Great recipe!
Modification: Added 1 teaspoon chipotle powder and 1 teaspoon onion powder since we only had a small onion.
Subtracted 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1/2 tablespoon chili powder.
We didn’t have tomato paste, but still came out delicious!

  109. 5 stars
I made this for my family and they said it was the best chili they’ve ever eaten. I did sub the kidney bean for charro beans though. My brother in law doesn’t like things to spicy and this was the perfect combination of spices. I’d been looking for a chili recipe that pleased everyone so thank you so much. It’s my go to recipe now.

  110. 5 stars
Wow! I had never seen a chili recipe that calls for broth and was skeptical but curious…this is the BEST chili I have ever had! We made it twice in one week and now we double the recipe every time we make it. I wish everything I liked came out as amazing as this!

  111. 5 stars
The best chili I have ever had!! As a 47 year old man and a self proclaimed chili conĀ·noisĀ·seur I am the final word on chili. Period.. And this here is #1 by a country mile. For me to rank this above my mother’s homemade chili took every inch of my being. But I did. Sorry Mom God rest her soul šŸ™ I believe she would agree with me in this particular case. I’ve been telling everyone that I tried a few things differently to attain such an amazing chili meanwhile I just followed this recipe to the T, and everyone absolutely loves it. Oh well I’ll sleep just as well every night knowing I told a small white lie. Anyways I want to personally thank you for sharing this Recipe. I’ll never change a thing 😁

  112. 5 stars
Our favourite Chili Recipe! Used fresh garlic instead of powder, left out the sugar and the cayenne. Delicious, tasty and hot enough for us. A definite keeper thanks so muchā¤ļø

  113. 5 stars
Finally, a recipe that lives up to it’s name. This was really the BEST chili I have made , extremely flavorful, perfect texture. I will definitely be making again

  114. 5 stars
This is near perfect for my taste anyway. Can’t remember how I came to find it here on the internet but am so happy I did.
It is the perfect base chili that cooks can add to or subtract from to find just what they like. Me I left it alone and made it just the way the recipe called for. It was great. Thanks for the recipe.

  115. 5 stars
I never post comments, but this is my favorite classic chili recipe! I’ve tried more recipes that’s I can count and this one is IT!! It is on repeat at my house. Thank you for such a wonderful, easy recipe!

  116. 5 stars
Fantastic basic chili recipe that’s easy to tweek to your own liking. It was my first time making chili and it was delicious.

Some things I did differently were using canned chili beans (1 kidney and 1 black beans) with their sauce and left the tomato sauce out. I also added a finely chopped Carolina Reaper for a little extra kick.

  117. 5 stars
I made this chilli and added canned mushrooms and pure beef smoked sausage cut into bite size pieces which came fully cooked so I added them in the last 10 minutes to heat them up, my family said it was delicious and a keeper. Excellent chilli thank you

  118. 5 stars
All I can say is delicious! I prepared a pot of this amazing Chili on a rainy day paired it with a great movie my family snd I truly enjoyed. Thank you for the recipe.

  119. 5 stars
Everytime I make this chili, people ask me for the recipe!! This is a super easy dish to make and so yummy!!

  120. 5 stars
Nine eaters, all adults, gave this two thumbs up. I’ve been making chili ā€œmy wayā€ for many years, but decided to give this recipe a try. Very, very glad I did. Great flavor, easy to make. Oh, I used ground turkey instead of ground beef and no one knew until I told them! Also left out the cayenne due to one guest’s aversion to hot spices. Otherwise followed recipe (doubled) exactly. Stop looking and know: This is the chili recipe you want.

  121. 5 stars
Best chili recipe- I sautƩed onions and beef in Ghee, but everything else as recipes states and my teenagers even commented on how delicious the flavor was.

  122. First of all, it was delicious. I was reluctant to measure everything, because I usually eye ingredients. That’s because I’m Italian!! I have to say, I followed the recipe to a t. And all I can say is whomever made up this recipe, my hat off to you. It was very simple to make and not time consuming at all. I had all the ingredients in the house, so that made me happy. Thanks for posting this recipe.

  123. 5 stars
My boyfriend & I made this tonight & were in heaven! The spicy level was spot on: just enough to not cross that threshold where you can’t taste anything else but the spice. Superb! Will make again & make twists using other ground proteins, goat cheese on top, etc. knowing it’ll always be awesome. Glad we found this recipe!

  124. 5 stars
This is a great recipe for an inexperienced cook and widow like myself. I added just a little JalapeƱo. It’s was very good. Thank You,
    Scott

  125. 5 stars
This chili is absolutely delicious! It turned out very well and everyone loved it. For the most part I followed the recipe, but I changed a few things. I added another half a can of mixed beans instead of the 1 can of kidney beans. I also reduced the amount of sugar and cumin from 2 tbsp to 1 tbsp, because I didn’t think it needed as much of both. I also used the entire can of tomato paste instead of the 2 tbsp and it was amazing!

  126. I did a thing. I added a small amount of chipotle In adobo AND ā€œmediumā€ fire-roasted green chili. I only added maybe a heaping tablespoon of the chipotle and the green chili was a very small can. Made it a bit to smoky but the spice was excellent. Should have scaled back a bit but I always go hard.

  127. 5 stars
This chili recipe tastes great and is easy to make. I added the cayenne pepper
Hint: I also added 2 heaping tablespoons of minced garlic and 3 or 4 tablespoons of butter to my batch. (Secret flavor everyone wants to know what it is)

  128. This is my 4th year of cooking this during the winter. This chili is effortless AND amazing!!!šŸ¤ŒšŸ¾ It never disappoints!!! Thanks for the recipe! šŸ˜‹šŸ˜‹šŸ˜‹šŸ˜‹šŸ˜‹

  129. 5 stars
    This came out fantastic!
I didn’t want the added sugar so I added a can of condensed tomato soup.
    Less sugar, more tomatoey .
    Delicious!

  130. 5 stars
An excellent recipe! It’s a little soupier than other recipes I’ve used but I liked it that way. I used 1/2 the recommended amount of cayenne pepper and that was enough heat for us!

  131. 5 stars
This is one of the few recipes I follow almost exactly as written. The only change I make is using stewed tomatoes instead of diced, which is more for the texture and doesn’t affect the flavor. This comes out perfect every time and freezes great.

  132. 5 stars
Super easy and delicious. I substituted the diced tomatoes with hot Rotel…just the right amount of heat.

  133. 5 stars
This is a great chilli recipe. and I also left out the cayenne pepper, as I have a sedative stomach. It was still perfect

  134. 5 stars
I made this chili tonight and I have to say it is the best chili we have ever had!!! I did not add the diced tomatoes because #1 I didn’t have any and #2 I don’t like tomato chunks. So I just added a bit more tomato sauce, about a cup and a half. I did add the cayenne pepper and it was not too hot at all. I will make this again for sure! Tomorrow we will have it for our chili dogs!!

  135. 5 stars
I use this recipe every time I make chili. I add three cans of beans. Each can a different type of beans . I also cut up a green pepper and add it to the pot as well.

  136. 5 stars
I have many Chili recipes and this one is the best. The only change I made was I used undrained Chili Beans instead of Kidney Beans. I like my Chili a little soupy and the the bean sauce adds great flavor

  137. great original chil recipe my use to make. no frills, just good food. I did add some green chilis. that’s it!!!

  138. 5 stars
We have made this chili countless amount of times. The kids love it, and it’s a huge hit! Cannot recommend this recipe enough!
    Bonus: leftovers are always amazing!

  139. 5 stars
I subbed real maple syrup for the sugar as that’s what I use in my spaghetti sauce – it adds a depth of flavor without making the recipe too sweet. I cooked it down for about an hour. Otherwise made as directed, served with tortilla chips and salad and it was a hit in my house, thanks for a great and easy recipe!

  140. 4 stars
I loved it…but it was slightly too sweet. Next time I will skip the sugar or use only a teaspoon

  141. 5 stars
    Excellent recipe!
I used 1/2 lb. ground beef, and a small lean steak shaved thin and cooked with the ground beef and onions.
This may be my go to Chili recipe now.

  142. 5 stars
Terrific job on this recipe. It really is delicious. We made a double batch for New Year’s Eve and everyone raved about it. Thank you for sharing!

  143. 5 stars
SOOOO good! Really great flavors and easy to make. I added red pepper flakes for a kick. Also doubled the amount of diced tomatoes and tomato paste. Will make again and again.

  144. 5 stars
I had made this receipt and every time is has been a huge success! I do modify the spices to my liking specially the chili. Thank you

  145. 5 stars
Simple and perfect, followed every step came out amazing! Going to try leftover prime rib instead of ground beef… probably going to be terrible.

  146. 5 stars
I just made this chili tonight and have to say it’s delicious I made it for 12 servings so I can have leftovers the only thing I would say is if you don’t like a lot of spice I would encourage to cut it down a bit the chili powder and cumin and cayenne but other than that it’s awesome…….thanks.

  147. 5 stars
I’ve tried many chili recipes trying to duplicate Moms and this one is the closest. I added a can of fire roasted green chili peppers and besides the ground beef cut up small chunks of sirloin, browned them with the hamburger and simmered the pot for 45 minutes. This is the best chili EVER! Made my own tortilla’s and ate way to much, but it’s so good it’s worth it.

  148. 5 stars
So delicious! I made it without onions and garlic powder – FODMAP style – and put in a table spoon of ground cloves instead of cayenne pepper. Also added an extra can of mixed beans, and skipped the tomato paste (didn’t have any!). It was delish!!!

  149. 5 stars
It’s a family favorite. I always make it with ground venison and it suits it perfectly. I leave out the cayenne and sometimes add a bit of semi sweet chocolate or a beer……it doesn’t need modification at all!!! Thanks for sharing it!

  150. 5 stars
This is the best chili recipe ever! I do 4 tbsp of sugar and add the cayenne which makes the perfect sweet and spicy. This is a go to. So glad I found this recipe.

  151. 5 stars
I tripled this for a party and we ran out! Hands down the best chili I’ve ever made!
(Only change was I used chipotle instead of cayenne just because I don’t like cayenne.)

  152. 5 stars
So yummy, the cayenne did add a nice kick at the end. Don’t add the cayenne for the kiddos unless you’re into cruel and unusual punishment.

  153. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe several times. The chilli is excellent and it’s so easy/quick to put together. We have a family of 5 and everyone loves it.

  154. 5 stars
I used this recipe tonight for a family gathering and received so many compliments! I did add the optional cayenne pepper which I think gave it a slight kick (but it was a good amount of spice- not too much and not too little). Would definitely use this recipe again!

  155. 5 stars
Excellent recipe!! Made one as listed and another without ground beef…..vegetarian. Both came out great and everyone loved it. Thank you for sharing

  156. 5 stars
Sitting here in TEXAS on Christmas Eve Eve with a low temp of 22 degrees (I’m a native Texan so, for me, it’s like I’m at the North Pole. LOL!) I made a big pot of this chili (have made it many times) and it is just the ticket. DELICIOUS and PERFECT every time!!! YUM!!

  157. 4 stars
Good Flavour! I would make it again but would add less liquid or simmer longer to reduce the liquid. It was a bit soupy. Thank you for the recipe šŸ™‚

  158. 5 stars
Literally my favorite chili recipe ever! So easy to make and tastes amazing. I add a can of black beans to mine. This will not disappoint!

  159. 5 stars
Yes! My husband, who is very picky, loved it!
I just cut back on the cumin because I’m not a fan of too much cumin ( I didn’t leave it out).

  160. 5 stars
Great chili! I added some Andouille sausage for added flavor, but kept all other ingredients the same. Delicious!!

  161. 5 stars
My family absolutely loved this chili so much so that my brother in law asked for the recipe so he could make it again the next day. It was super easy to make and I had all the ingredients on hand. Great flavor. It was a little spicy for the little one. It was cooled down for him w/some yogurt and cottage cheese and even he loved it.

  162. 5 stars
A classic! I look up this recipe every winter, since I don’t have my mom’s recipe with me. I do add garbanzo beans (chickpeas), just like my momma does. In a bowl with some sour cream, cheddar cheese, and cornbread…YUM.

  163. 5 stars
I have many different Chili recipes but one is now top of list. The only change made was I used Chili Beans instead of Kidney Beans and didn’t drain the beans as I like the taste the sauce give the chili and I like my Chili more soupy than thick

  164. 5 stars
I tweaked the recipe as well I added onion powder and paprika also used dark red kidney beans along with the red kidney beans I did two cups of beef broth and I didn’t have tomato sauce so I used tomato soup with a pinch of corn starch .. it was soo good with corn bread on a cold day

  165. 5 stars
I added sweet potatoes, portobello mushrooms, zucchini, a tablespoon each of balsamic vinegar and cocoa. Rich and delicious!

  166. This is a wonderful chili!! The spice blend is great. I added a few heaping tablespoons of Trader Joe’s Corn and Chili Tomato-less Salsa to kick it up a notch. Thank you for such a great versatile recipe!

  167. 5 stars
It’s cold out side and I wanted some Chili, and this recipe is a five-star recipe, so I had to try it ,and didn’t take long at all and man it’s good !!! I added a couple of Jalapenos and that was the ticket..

  168. 5 stars
The recipe is amazing I got raving reviews at a potluck. I do suggest however skipping the Cayenne pepper. I had to dilute it because of the spice. It sneaks up on you. To dilute it I used more paste and a little milk. You can use ketchup as well.

  169. 4 stars
Next time I make it I will skip the sugar. It’s distractingly sweet to me, but everything else about it is great.

  170. 5 stars
I cannot believe how delicious this spice blend was. I like to grind all my spices up together with a mortar & pestle before I add them just to see if the flavor is where I want it to be and I was AMAZED by this combo. Perfect perfect perfect. I subbed tomato soup for the tomato sauce, added a bay leaf, fish sauce, paprika & corn. Love this recipe thank you

  171. 5 stars
This is my go-to chili recipe, we love it! I will heat it up a bit by using hot Rotel for some of the diced tomatoes and I substitute pinto beans (personal taste)but your recipe is the best!! Thank you for sharingā¤ļø

  172. 5 stars
Made the chili recipe, and delicious, reminds me of my mom, I think she made it like once a week, very economical! I serve mine with grated cheddar cheese & a spoonful of sour cream and of course a big loaf of hard crust Italian bread, if you want a salad on the side!

  173. 5 stars
This will be our go-to chili recipe from now on! This seasonings are on point. I added diced green pepper and pasta noodles. So yummy 🤩

  174. 5 stars
This is classic chili. Super delicious. Just the right spices. Everyone in my family loved it. I will definitely use this recipe the next time I make chili. Yummmmm

  175. 5 stars
The best chili ever. It seems to me, it’s hard to go wrong in making chili; so, I would sometimes ‘wing it’ which most people do. It seems like a lot of ingredients; but, you probably have most in the pantry. I add them one at the time when cooking ground beef and onions. Easy-peasy. So worth it!

  176. 5 stars
Yum-MY! The past couple times I’ve made this it’s been great. I remembered this time to make the following modifications and it was even better: 1/2 tbsp of brown sugar instead of the 2 tbsp white, an extra tbsp of garlic, and two bay leaves.

  177. 5 stars
This Chili was wonderful. I used it for ‘walking tacos” a real hit with my son. I did not have cumin but did not want to go back to the store. It was lovely nonetheless. My son is having seconds! SmilewThank you for sharing.

  178. 5 stars
I haven’t made chili in quite some time and was looking for a flavorful recipe. This one right here is it! No need to buy the packet chilli seasoning with all the extra preservatives. I mixed my spices while the meat was cooking, sampled it and knew it was gonna be a hit. I made this last night with Italian chicken sausage, fire roasted tomatoes, red beans in chipotle peppers and served it over fries…. Chefs kiss

  179. 5 stars
Doubled the recipe. Husband loves it. Topped with shredded cheese and sour cream. Added some sweet corn and bell pepper. Best chili recipe!

  180. 5 stars
Tasty and easy instructions. Since I mixed ground beef and ground chicken, I used vegetable broth for a more neutral liquid. I did 2 teaspoons of white pepper, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to give it a stronger kick.

  181. 5 stars
    SOOOOOOO GOOD!

Made it for dinner on a rainy evening! Kids were not very eager to try it but after 1 taste they were hooked!

I am of Asian-Indian origin and used the India. Red chili powder, but 2 tbsp was waaay too much, especially for the kids, so will use 1/4 tbsp next time, but other than that, WHAT A FIND!

Where do I find your other recipes! šŸ˜

  182. 5 stars
Delicious & Simple to make! Made some corn bread and my family loved it!! Definitely a keeper! Thanks for sharing 😊

  183. 5 stars
    This chili recipe is great,
Could taste all of the seasonings. I did drain the fat off of the hamburger before I added the ingredients and it turned out great. Everyone loved it. Looking forward to trying other recipes you have.

  184. 5 stars
Best recipe! I have a big family so I double all of the ingredients, with the exception of the spices, and substitute the beef broth with stout beer. And it is amazing!

  185. 4 stars
It’s good, but too much sugar! I used less than half and it was still too sweet. I should’ve listened to my intuition. I’ve never followed a recipe for chili and it’s always been really good. I wanted to try something new so I gave this a shot. It’s a great recipe, but just be warned that you might want to adjust the sugar to your liking.

I’ve been making this Chili for a couple of years now, and it is the best flavored and so easy to make. Thank you

I tried this Chili recipe because my kids like chili. I’m not the biggest fan of it, but this recipe is sooo good! I think this may be the only chili I like!

    1. 5 stars
Not the best at this, not the best at that…but overall an excellent and easy preparation of everyday chili.

Can’t miss with this. From now on my quick go-to chili recipe for a cold winter day.

    2. 5 stars
Just made this recipe and added a whole diced jalapeno with about 1/2 its seeds while cooking the meat and onions and some smoked hot paprika to taste in combination with all the other spices. This is really good. A little kick but not hot. Definitely the best chili recipe I have found so far.

    3. 5 stars
I used your chili recipe and I gotta say that it was the absolute best chili I’ve ever had… My fiance and guest said the same…

Thank you for sharing this recipe… šŸ™‚

Quick cheap an easy to make. Omg this was so easy to make and really delicious. My 9year old had never had chilli and now she loves chilli. We ate ours with saltine crackers and shredded cheese great Friday night meal for the family.

    5. 5 stars
I’ve been cooking chili for 60 years, but I saw this recipe and decided to try it. I really think it’s the best I’ve had in years. I tweaked the chili and cumin a bit, but otherwise I followed it to a T. I would recommend it to anyone.

    6. 5 stars
This was fabulous! I made it for a group of men on game night. One plans on having it for breakfast.
My only substitutions were fresh garlic instead of powdered. I also cut back on the salt. That’s a personal preference.

    7. 5 stars
The best chili I ever made! Husband raved about it. Fly EAGLES fly!šŸ¤žšŸ¤žWill make it again for the Super BowlšŸ¤—šŸ¤—šŸ¤—

    8. 5 stars
My husband said this is the best chili I’ve ever made. Next time I’ll leave out the cayenne pepper though. The only thing I did different was I substituted turkey broth for the beef broth. It’s what I had on hand.

    9. 5 stars
This recipe made making my own chili approachable for me. Next time, I’ll use more garlic and less cumin. There is definitely going to be a next time!

    10. 5 stars
Its been pouring rain for 2 weeks. Time to cook something cozy and warm. Stumbled across this simple recipe and was blown away by the flavor. Comes together easily. I was out of kidney beans so substituted pinto, but still delicious. Was perfect with shredded cheese, sour cream toppings. Thanks! My first homemade chili!

    11. 5 stars
This was the best chili recipe ever! I will definitely make it again. However I did reduce the chili powder. I only used 2 tablespoons and that was plenty.

    12. 5 stars
This was a hit. The family wants me to make another batch for tomorrow. We topped with sour cream and crushed Fritos (or cornbread) .

    13. 5 stars
Best chili recipe I’ve ever make! Easy and delicious. My family loved it specially my kids, they’re asking me to make it again. Thank you!

    14. 5 stars
Last minute dinner! I came across this recipe, had all the ingredients and even added some jalapenos. It was great! Simple, quick and planning to make again.

  188. 5 stars
This was the best chili I’ve ever made!!! I forgot tomato sauce, so I used the rest of the paste with the rest of the broth & it was delicious!!!

    1. 5 stars
OMG!!! I tried this recipe over the weekend and it was soooo Gooood!!! This recipe did not disappoint. This will be my go to recipe from now on.

    2. 5 stars
Delicious! I added two cans of kidney beans because we like more beans. I think you could use any type of bean. I also used half mild and half hot ground chili because that’s all I had and it came out perfect. I printed it off because I’m not going bother to make any other chili recipe.

    3. 5 stars
Very consistent! We do add a little smoked paprika and garlic but Love the ease of this recipe! Always topped with cheese, an sour cream! Delicious

    4. 5 stars
I’ve tried many different chili recipes, but this one SO good. The perfect blend of spices! This was just what our family needed on a chilly winter night! šŸ˜‰

    5. 5 stars
Absolutely loved this chili. So good and very easy to make. The whole family loves it also. I used 2 hienz mixed chilli beans in a can. Came out perfect

    6. 5 stars
I have made so many fancy chilis–Cincinnati Skyline, white, West Texas (no beans! yikes). This is the one my family likes best, by far! And so easy: adios, cinnamon and chocolate… I do sometimes sub out the kidney beans for black or small red, depending on what I have on hand. All works out great! Thanks

    1. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious!! I swapped the diced tomatoes for Rotel and used bacon grease I read of olive oil. Will definitely make this one again!

    2. 5 stars
Loved it. Was delicious – we can’t wait to eat the left overs tomorrow! ( I also added a couple crushed cloves of garlic to it).

    3. 5 stars
This is the BEST chili recipe that I have used. My family loved it and my son’s fiancĆ© asked for the recipe.
I did consider saying it was a secret family recipe but I did the right thing and shared the recipe with her. 😊

    4. 5 stars
My husband said it was the best chili he has ever had; and our son won 1st place several times, 2nd place, and people’s choice in chili cook-offs. Hats off to you on this recipe!!
The only change I am going to make is the amount of cumin, not my favorite taste!
      Thanks for sharing.
I topped it off with taco-flavored cheese and sour cream.
      Deb

    1. 5 stars
Love this recipe!! My personal tweek is to reduce sugar to 1 tablespoon and I use a heaping 1/4 teaspoon of Cayenne since I like it hot!! Awesome!!!

    2. 5 stars
This is a really good Chili! I only use 1 TBSP of Cumin, and it didn’t need anything spicy to have the perfect spice for this family!

    1. 5 stars
Absolutely the best chile I have made. Made it twice now and tripled the recipe. Freezes good. It don’t last long. Only thing different is I halved the sugar and also added in some thin ribeye for additional meat and texture .

  189. 5 stars
One of the best chili recipes I’ve made… I used turkey ground meat and ground turkey sausage meat as a substitute to the 2lbs beef and chicken stock… everyone in my household thought it was very good!

    1. 5 stars
I’ve used this recipe over 20 times because my family just loves this chili. I do not alter the recipe at all. Absolutely delicious with saltine crackers, cheddar cheese, and sour cream.

    1. 5 stars
I really liked this recipe. They best part for me was the combination of seasonings. I used ground chicken and chicken seasoning and it turned out to be one of my best chili’s yet.

    2. 5 stars
Made earlier today .. having it for dinner tonight.. I didn’t have paste but I added extra diced tomatoes and sauces little chocolate and a cup of black coffee… fresh chopped garlic and extra cayenne pepper… it smells so good I had to try it and it is delicious!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR RECIPE!!! It’s great alone but also a great starter to change up a little. You killed it girl!!!

    3. 5 stars
I use 1.5 the spices roughly and add diced green chiles mild- use real garlic also- little bit of paprika and parsley- great chili- thanks for recipe! Made it many times for the family- perfect for chilly weather-

    1. 5 stars
Best chili recipe I’ve tried yet. Brought me back to childhood growing up in Texas. I substituted ground turkey for 1/2 of the ground beef and no one can tell the difference. Used all high quality spices the first time (they come in glass containers) and it turned out better than the second batch I made with lower quality spices (cheap plastic containers). Really good recipe! Will be a staple from now on.

    2. 5 stars
This was a great, straight forward chili recipe. We did double everything except the chili powder and sugar. For the chili powder, we used a tablespoon each of ancho and paseilla chili powders and a half tablespoon of chipotle chili powder. I’m the future, we will cut back the chipotle even more. It pushed by spice limit. Overall, great!

    3. 5 stars
Delicious chili! I doubled the recipe, added green bell pepper with the onion, another 2 tbsp of tomato paste, and another cup of broth to finish the carton. It was the best I’ve ever made!

    4. That sounds good but I have some questions. Did you thaw them first? Did you cook them with the onion and ground beef? Or did you toss them in as the chili was cooking? Sorry for all the questions, I’m not a very experienced cook.

    1. 5 stars
Made the recipe just like it’s written with the Cayenne pepper and it was amazing! Best Chili I’ve ever had! Friends and family loved it!!

    2. 5 stars
This is my family’s new favorite chili recipe! We sub crushed tomatoes for the diced tomatoes and it’s delicious!

Any hints for using the Crock-Pot with this recipe?

    3. 5 stars
love this recipe! i always add bell and poblano peppers in it. along with ex beef chunks and garlic to the spice mix.

    4. 5 stars
This chili is AMAZING! Tonight was my second time to make it and I doubled the recipe, thinking now I should have tripled for plenty of leftovers! So easy and delicious! Thank you, this will be my go to from now on.

    5. 5 stars
Best and easy recipe. I use diced shredded carrot, instead of sugar for sweetness and saute it with red onion.

    6. 5 stars
I never made chili before. I picked this recipie it looked easy enough. It is absolutely delicious. Tonight was my third time making it in a week. I brought it to a few family members now everyone wants me to keep making it. Thank you so much for the recipe.

  190. Delicious recipe. Only thing different I did was doubled it so I could use a can of kidney beans and black beans. I love the combo of spices used. Served with French baguette and dollop of sour cream and cheese which the latter was not necessary.

  191. 5 stars
Good chilli. Straight forward and nothing exceptional. I put 5 cut slices of bacon in mine. Makes for great leftovers.

  192. 5 stars
I made this recipe. I tweaked it a bit. I added chilli mix 2 tbsp and 1/2 bottle of tomato pasata. Brown sugar and hot sauce.

  193. 5 stars
This is really great chili! I tripled the recipe for a large party and also doubled the ground beef (6lbs of beef) and everyone loved it!

  194. This is so easy and tasty! Lots of flavor and just the right amount of heat. Has become a staple in our house.

    1. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! I only tweaked a little.I threw in a can of chili beans along with the red beans. Cayenne pepper to give a little extra spice. I ate 2 bowls

  195. 5 stars
This is a very good receipt , and Chilil thanks all friends have asked me about it. and of course i’ve told them…

  196. 5 stars
Holy Moly! This really IS the best chili recipe. I added one component: I rehydrated a few cascavel chili peppers & ran them through a food processor (I then strained them using the beef broth because the skin of the pepper didn’t break down in the processor). The peppers are low on the heat scale and add depth to the recipe without being overpowering at all. It’s a keeper for sure šŸ™‚

  197. 5 stars
Your recipe was so grand and left room to add and subtract certain amounts to suit my taste. Thank you so much

  198. 5 stars
This is the ONLY chili recipe you will ever need! I made this again today with frozen fresh tomatoes from the summer. Recipe is spot on as written but forgiving if you wish to tweak it. The only things I did differently was half the sugar and added a splash of lime juice after it was done cooking. Really compliments the cumin flavor! Thank you for the truly best chili recipe I’ve ever found!

    1. 5 stars
I made this a couple days ago for meal prep and it’s pretty yummy. Only thing I added was some dive garlic but did not deviate from the recipe. This is now my go to chili recipe.

  199. I am a basic chili kind of person and even this is a basic chili there are layers of flavor that really kicked it up a notch on my favorites list. I used all suggested ingredients and it was not too hot for me. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

  200. 5 stars
This Chili Recipe is the Ultimate!!!
A Keeper!!! Recipe was easy to follow.
I made a double recipe and treated a couple Friends and myself.šŸ˜‹
    ThankYou for Sharing!

    1. 5 stars
Brilliant recipe. I use fresh diced green hot chili peppers (2pcs) instead of chili powder, fresh diced tomatoes (4-5pcs), add water instead of beef broth, and also add a can of corn. I used ground pork instead of beef and the result was astonishing!

    2. Did you use the full 2 Tablespoons of cumin? Want to be sure this is suppose to be tablespoons and not teaspoons before I make it. Thanks for any advice.

      1. 5 stars
Great recipe! I added some extra beans and forgot to add the sugar, but it was still great! If you’re wanting to avoid extra sugar, it’s just fine without it.

  201. 5 stars
This is a good recipe for chili. The family loved it and I will use this recipe for the next time we want some chili. Thanks for sharing the recipe and I will not be using chili mix packs no more.

    1. 5 stars
Great recipe the best in my opinion I don’t eat any canned food unless it’s home canned I used dried small red beans and I diced up fresh tomatoes everything else I yellowed the receipt it takes about 4 hours to cook med high towards the end I turn it down it thickens up nicely when the beans are like them it’s done

    2. 5 stars
I have used this recipe for the last 3 years for deer hunting in black powder season it is a hit with the guys it is definitely a top notch recipe I am making it tomorrow to head to the camp for another season

    3. 5 stars
My all time go to Chili. You can’t beat this. I add one other secret ingredient šŸ˜‰. Ever time you turn around my husband asks for more chili. When you get down to -6 degrees there is nothing like a bowl of this amazing chili with some hot cornbread. I am so blessed to have found this recipe.šŸ™šŸ». Thank you for sharing. Love itā¤ļø

  202. 5 stars
It really is a good chili. I’ve followed several recipes that were all good, but the simplicity and great taste of this one makes it my goto chili recipe.

    1. 3 stars
This recipe was easy to follow. For me, the sugar was too much, so I may try again but with only 1 tbs of sugar. Hopefully my husband will eat it so that it doesn’t go to waste.

    2. I found this chili way too salty and liquidy. I would not make it again without modifications. And I used some products being low salt items.

  203. I think it tastes too sweet. We doubled the batch 20 4 tablespoons of sugar. I don’t think the recipe needs any sugar. Great flavour with out.

  204. 5 stars
Good chili. Very happy. Pot I had was too small because I tripled the recipe. Had to omit broth otherwise I would be making chili on the floor, still came out killer

  205. 5 stars
This recipe is my first time making chili the recipe was quick and easy to follow. I used chicken broth instead of beef because it was what I had. I thought the cayenne was a bit too spicy so then I added more sugar which made it too sweet so then I sprinkled in a bit more salt and it all balanced out lol rookie mistakes. Served with sour cream, cheddar cheese, crackers or tortillas and crunchy fried jalapeƱo peppers. Everyone loved it! I will def make again albeit only add one tablespoon of sugar next time and 1/8 cayenne.

  206. 5 stars
I made this chili for my family and it was phenomenal! This will be my go to from now on! We like a little bit more spice (even though I did use the ground cayenne) so next time I think I will add in a little tiny bit of freshly dried cayenne. But this recipe had soo much flavor! It’s worth a try!!!

  207. 5 stars
I made this tonight and it’s phenomenal! I’ve tried many different chili recipes and haven’t fallen in love with any of them until now. So glad I stumbled across this recipe!

  208. 5 stars
Just made this tonight, if not the best chili, then it’s definitely top 3. I added maybe just a bit more cayenne. Cheddar cheese, sour cream and green onion on top. Perfect.

  209. 5 stars
Great recipe. Easy to do most items are staples in our house making it easy to pull together. I kept the cayenne as my men love spicy! Thanks for sharing. Definitely will keep this in my bag of tricks to whip up again.

  210. 5 stars
This was so good and my whole family loved it. We ate it with corn chips and the only change we made was to put less cumin and less chili powder. It was so delicious and not too hard to make even though I’m only eleven! šŸ™‚

  211. 5 stars
I seriously use this recipe every time I make chili. My husband grew up on chili and this is by far his favorite too. Thank you for sharing!!

  212. Excellent recipe! Used kidney and pintos…and a combo of ground beef and Italian sausage…eyeballed it a bunch as I do but still, it was the best chili I’ve ever made! Thank you!

  213. 5 stars
Great recipe! We doubled this recipe and it was really good. I would probably do a little less chili powder next time but otherwise great flavor.

  214. 5 stars
My husband requested homemade chili (but I hadn’t made any in over ten years), then I found this recipe. After a quick trip to the grocery store, voila! The chili tasted good and the recipe was simple and thorough. Thanks!

  215. 5 stars
Sooooooo delicious! I used the exact measurements for the seasonings as a foundation for flavor and then added additional seasoning for my taste preference.

    It’s sooooooooo yummy! Solid recipe!

  216. 5 stars
My husband husband is a very picky eater. He loved this recipe and so did I! I think this is the best chili ever!!! I added a little bit of cinnamon and only used 2 tablespoons of sugar and used garlic salt instead of garlic powder (just a pinch). This is a recipe we will make from now on!

  217. 5 stars
I’ve been making this recipe with no changes for years now and its awesome every single time. My husband smothers his hot dogs in it, i eat it as is with some green onions and sour cream. Delicious!

  218. 5 stars
The ABSOLUTE MOST AMAZING chili recipe!! The only thing I didn’t add was the diced tomatoes and didn’t even need it. Will be remaking again and again.

  219. 5 stars
My new go to chili recipe. Simple and delicious. 2 of my 3 picky teens even liked it. The other wouldn’t even try it saying she didn’t like chili. Whatever. More for the rest of us! (I only had chili/pinto beans in the cupboard so that is what I used. Next time I will try the kidney beans.)

    1. 5 stars
Perfect as written. My mix I used forever was discontinued and I’ve been searching for another recipe for chili for years. This is a keeper!
      Thank you.

    2. 5 stars
This is a very good chili! I just tweaked it a little by adding a 15oz can of tomato sauce instead of 8 oz and 2 cans pink beans instead of 1 can. I like a lot of beans. I’ve made many chili recipes through the years and this is my favorite! My husband liked it also. Served with shredded cheddar on top, yummy!

  220. 5 stars
You’re right — it tastes just like Mom used to make and is delicious. My wife, who is New York Sicilian heritage, learned to cook in her grandmother’s kitchen. In 38 years of marriage she had never made chili. What an outstanding dish she made! Thanks from both of us.

    1. 5 stars
This recipe is perfect. I love the addition of sugar, and I also went a little heavy on the cayenne pepper. Topped it with cheese, sour cream and also diced avocado šŸ˜‹ 10/10 will probably always use this recipe!

      1. 5 stars
I found this chili recipe a couple years ago and I’ve made it every couple months since then. It’s my absolute go-to and everyone I’ve ever served it to has asked for the recipe.

  221. Outstanding!! I doubled recipe, added the Cayenne, and 20 Sheshitos and 3 medium JalapeƱos. At the end, before serving I added 1/2 cup of real Vermont Maple Syrup. Don’t know how well Pancake Syrup would have been. Forgot to say earlier, I also added 1 lbs of sweet Italian sausage.

  222. 5 stars
Yep- all the reviewers were right- this is the best chili recipe I have ever made! Made for a Friendsgiving gathering & everyone loved it! I made it the day before as someone suggested, added just a little cayenne & a can of garbanzo beans (just for the fun of it). Served with shredded cheese & sour cream. Delicious.

  223. 5 stars
It’s a good quick chili with basic ingredients and spices. I added a couple more herb and spice (Mexican chocolate, oregano and cinnamon) to personalize it and add to an already very good flavor base.

  224. 5 stars
First time making the chili šŸŒ¶ļø I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor was my family. I had never used beef broth in my chili so I was taken a back. It came out very tasty and my girlfriend wants me to make another pot. Well done who ever came up with the recipe. Five Star ⭐✨

  225. 5 stars
Delicious nutritious recipe, so add as much heat as you like. I added red dried chilis and substituted sugar for a chopped carrot for sweetness.

  226. 5 stars
I absolutely love this chili recipe! My 24-year-old grandson loved the chili and gave it a 10 out of 10 and I have to agree! I certainly will make this again but I think I’m going to have to double it because it went fast!

  227. Excellent recipe ! The taste brings me back to my childhood and the spices make it !!! Especially the sugar ! Thank you ! Using this recipe also for a meal train!

  228. 5 stars
I have made this recipe many times and the only thing I have done different (wife asked for) is put in a teaspoon of cinnamon and a tablespoon of peanut butter. The rest is the original recipe. When I first made this it was phenomenal, of course.

Thanks for the recipe, it’s a big keeper in our house!!!

  229. 5 stars
Excellent for a quick chili recipe. We loved it. My family likes spicy so we used hot Rotel kept the Cheyenne and used a little less sugar. ā¤ļøā¤ļøWill make this again. Thanks for the recipe

  230. 5 stars
Amazing! I omitted the onion so kids didnt complain and used chili ready beans and tomatoes. I also reduced the beef broth to one cup for a thicker consistency. This will be a staple in our rotation.

  231. Too much spice- family did not like
Made it as stated in recipe-
    4 TABLESPOONS of cumin and
    5 TABLESPOONS of chili powder
    And
    3 TABLESPOONS of garlic powder??!!
    Is this correct?
    PLEASE RESPOND

    1. 5 stars
Sounds like you doubled the spices. I actually cut the spices in half since I don’t like too spicy. I added 3 or 4 TB of sugar since I like mine a little sweeter. Also add 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder for richness—a secret my mom taught me.

    1. 5 stars
We’ve been craving chili and this didn’t disappoint! Recommend adding the cayenne pepper that is optional. It really elevated the flavor of the chili. Will make this again and again. 10 stars if I could. Thanks for a great recipe.

  232. 5 stars
This is fantastic! Made with Impossible ground beef, diced tomatoes/chilies and added some beer. Will definitely put on the rotation, so easy and good!

  233. 5 stars
Great basic chili recipe. I never add sugar to my chili. The 1 1/2 cups of broth seemed like too much. I used just 1 cup and it was plenty. It was simple to make and delicious.

  234. Amazing recipe and soooo easy. I’ve gotten so many compliments. Everyone says it’s the best. I don’t usually have cayenne pepper so I leave it out. I usually double it and swap a can of tomatoes for diced tomatoes with green chilies (mild). Easy recipe to adjust to your own taste.

  235. 5 stars
My husband and my family said it was the best chili they have tasted. I added an extra can of kidney beans and I used one less tablespoon of cumin and sugar because I had never used it before and I wanted to make sure we liked it but it turned out excellent. I also have never used a can of beef broth in my chili before but that added to it very well done

  236. 4 stars
Great chili recipe with one exception. Way too much cumin in the recipe. It overpowers everything. Next time I will reduce cumin to 2 teaspoons and see if that helps.

  237. I’ve been using this recipe for at least the last four years, it’s truly the best recipe I’ve come across! So delicious!

    1. 5 stars
I had a group of eight over and everybody raved about the chili. They said it was so good. It was very delicious. I’ve never put sugar in chili before. It brought the flavor of the spices out.

  238. 5 stars
AwesomešŸ˜‹ šŸ‘šŸ½ I used 2cups of beef broth and 2 tablespoons of sugar when I taste the seasoning mix it was the perfect taste for me, so I didn’t add extra. My go to chili recipe!

    Thanks! 😊

  239. The best chili I have every made. Ingredients is on point. My whole family loves it when say sey chili for dinner

  240. 5 stars
I decided to make chili last night, but the recipe I usually use is too spicy for me right now, so I decided to find a new one that was more mild. The only modification I made was to add two large whole peeled carrots, which helped cut through the acid of the tomatoes. This recipe checks every box. Even our family in town from Minnesota loved it! My four year old ate two bowls, and I made it through the night without indigestion. This is our new go to chili recipe. Thank you!

  241. 5 stars
Made this amazing recipe tonight, I love it! Next time I will leave out the cayenne pepper since I’m not a spicy kind of girl, but even with it it still was good!

    1. 5 stars
The chilli was very tasty. I used left over tender roast instead of hamburger. Gotta keep stretching the dollar in simple, yummy ways

    1. 5 stars
So good and I don’t add the sugar. I serve it over rice and top with cheddar cheese, sour cream and a splash of hot sauce!

  242. 5 stars
I love this recipe. It’s quick and simple and it’s easy a great chili recipe to use as a base when experimenting.

      1. 5 stars
I made this today because it was just me and I only had 1lb of meat. I substituted the tomato sauce with tomato purƩe. This worked perfect as it took some of the sweetness the other comments mentioned.

  243. 5 stars
Absolutely love this recipe! I think it is the base for all perfect chili’s. I tinker with it by adding 6 different kinds of peppers, less beans, and more beef. Excellent for beginners like myself. I’be made twice within 5 days due to demand.

  244. 5 stars
This is a great recipe. I’ve made it twice now. It’s delicious and easy to make. It’s now my go-to chili recipe. I left out the sugar this time to see if I miss it. It’s cooking now. Can’t wait to have some.

  245. 5 stars
Best Chili recipe I have found yet!! I made this for the first time today and it was delicious!! I did throw in a chipotle in adobe sauce and it was perfect! just the right amount of kick to it.

  246. 5 stars
This is such a good and easy recipe! I substitute the diced tomatoes for Rotella hot (we like spice in our household) and it’s amazing. I also upped the seasoning a bit, thanks so much for a great meal!

  247. 5 stars
Very tasty. I left out the sugar and added a tub of BBQ shredded pork to a double batch of the Chili. The BBQ pork replaces the sugar and adds some additional texture and flavor in addition to the ground beef. Lots of complements.

Turned out delicious! I added a couple of cloves of fresh minced garlic with the onions, a bit of paprika, and some onion powder just to jazz it up a bit, and all the picky eaters in my house loved it! For the really picky eaters, I would suggest leaving out the tomatoes or blending them up.

I look at this recipe anytime I make chili as it reminds me of ingredients I may forget. I add a bit of corn to it it only brightens dish.
For a kiddo or person who won’t take heat:
Use small amount of brown sugar to theirs. Should pull out heat.
