The Best Classic Chili – This traditional chili recipe is just like mom used to make with ground beef, beans, and a simple homemade blend of chili seasonings.

This classic chili is perfect for a weeknight meal because it can be made in minutes.  The only thing to chop is an onion.

How do you make good homemade chili?

  • Heat olive in a large soup pot. 
  • Add chopped onion and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon.
  • Cook for 6-7 minutes.

  • Add chili powder, cumin, sugar, tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and optional cayenne. 
  • Stir until well combined.

  • Add diced tomatoes, kidney beans, beef broth, and tomato sauce. 
  • Stir well.

  • Simmer for 20-25 minutes.
  • Let the chili rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

I’ve been playing around with this chili recipe for the past few months, making it many times.  My family didn’t mind the repetition at all because I really do believe that I ended up with the best chili ever!

The Best Classic Chili - This traditional chili recipe is just like mom used to make with ground beef, beans, and a simple homemade blend of chili seasonings.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion -diced
  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper* -optional
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 (15 oz.) can petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 (16 oz.) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce


  • Add the olive oil to a large soup pot and place it over medium-high heat for two minutes. Add the onion. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef to the pot. Break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6-7 minutes, until the beef is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the chili powder, cumin, sugar, tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and optional cayenne. Stir until well combined.
  • Add the broth, diced tomatoes (with their juice), drained beans, and tomato sauce. Stir well.
  • Bring the liquid to a low boil. Then, reduce the heat (low to medium-low) to gently simmer the chili, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Let the chili rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.


I typically skip the cayenne pepper because I have a young kiddo.  Then, I put out some hot sauce for those adults that want to add some spiciness to their chili.

    It really is a good chili. I’ve followed several recipes that were all good, but the simplicity and great taste of this one makes it my goto chili recipe.

  4. I think it tastes too sweet. We doubled the batch 20 4 tablespoons of sugar. I don’t think the recipe needs any sugar. Great flavour with out.

    Good chili. Very happy. Pot I had was too small because I tripled the recipe. Had to omit broth otherwise I would be making chili on the floor, still came out killer

    This recipe is my first time making chili the recipe was quick and easy to follow. I used chicken broth instead of beef because it was what I had. I thought the cayenne was a bit too spicy so then I added more sugar which made it too sweet so then I sprinkled in a bit more salt and it all balanced out lol rookie mistakes. Served with sour cream, cheddar cheese, crackers or tortillas and crunchy fried jalapeño peppers. Everyone loved it! I will def make again albeit only add one tablespoon of sugar next time and 1/8 cayenne.

    I made this chili for my family and it was phenomenal! This will be my go to from now on! We like a little bit more spice (even though I did use the ground cayenne) so next time I think I will add in a little tiny bit of freshly dried cayenne. But this recipe had soo much flavor! It’s worth a try!!!

    Just made this tonight, if not the best chili, then it’s definitely top 3. I added maybe just a bit more cayenne. Cheddar cheese, sour cream and green onion on top. Perfect.

    This was so good and my whole family loved it. We ate it with corn chips and the only change we made was to put less cumin and less chili powder. It was so delicious and not too hard to make even though I’m only eleven! 🙂

    My husband husband is a very picky eater. He loved this recipe and so did I! I think this is the best chili ever!!! I added a little bit of cinnamon and only used 2 tablespoons of sugar and used garlic salt instead of garlic powder (just a pinch). This is a recipe we will make from now on!

      This is a very good chili! I just tweaked it a little by adding a 15oz can of tomato sauce instead of 8 oz and 2 cans pink beans instead of 1 can. I like a lot of beans. I’ve made many chili recipes through the years and this is my favorite! My husband liked it also. Served with shredded cheddar on top, yummy!

      This recipe is perfect. I love the addition of sugar, and I also went a little heavy on the cayenne pepper. Topped it with cheese, sour cream and also diced avocado 😋 10/10 will probably always use this recipe!

  22. Outstanding!! I doubled recipe, added the Cayenne, and 20 Sheshitos and 3 medium Jalapeños. At the end, before serving I added 1/2 cup of real Vermont Maple Syrup. Don’t know how well Pancake Syrup would have been. Forgot to say earlier, I also added 1 lbs of sweet Italian sausage.

    Yep- all the reviewers were right- this is the best chili recipe I have ever made! Made for a Friendsgiving gathering & everyone loved it! I made it the day before as someone suggested, added just a little cayenne & a can of garbanzo beans (just for the fun of it). Served with shredded cheese & sour cream. Delicious.

    It’s a good quick chili with basic ingredients and spices. I added a couple more herb and spice (Mexican chocolate, oregano and cinnamon) to personalize it and add to an already very good flavor base.

    I have made this recipe many times and the only thing I have done different (wife asked for) is put in a teaspoon of cinnamon and a tablespoon of peanut butter. The rest is the original recipe. When I first made this it was phenomenal, of course.

    Amazing! I omitted the onion so kids didnt complain and used chili ready beans and tomatoes. I also reduced the beef broth to one cup for a thicker consistency. This will be a staple in our rotation.

    Made it as stated in recipe-
    4 TABLESPOONS of cumin and
    5 TABLESPOONS of chili powder
    3 TABLESPOONS of garlic powder??!!
    Is this correct?

    Great basic chili recipe. I never add sugar to my chili. The 1 1/2 cups of broth seemed like too much. I used just 1 cup and it was plenty. It was simple to make and delicious.

  35. Amazing recipe and soooo easy. I’ve gotten so many compliments. Everyone says it’s the best. I don’t usually have cayenne pepper so I leave it out. I usually double it and swap a can of tomatoes for diced tomatoes with green chilies (mild). Easy recipe to adjust to your own taste.

    My husband and my family said it was the best chili they have tasted. I added an extra can of kidney beans and I used one less tablespoon of cumin and sugar because I had never used it before and I wanted to make sure we liked it but it turned out excellent. I also have never used a can of beef broth in my chili before but that added to it very well done

    Great chili recipe with one exception. Way too much cumin in the recipe. It overpowers everything. Next time I will reduce cumin to 2 teaspoons and see if that helps.

    I decided to make chili last night, but the recipe I usually use is too spicy for me right now, so I decided to find a new one that was more mild. The only modification I made was to add two large whole peeled carrots, which helped cut through the acid of the tomatoes. This recipe checks every box. Even our family in town from Minnesota loved it! My four year old ate two bowls, and I made it through the night without indigestion. This is our new go to chili recipe. Thank you!

    Very tasty. I left out the sugar and added a tub of BBQ shredded pork to a double batch of the Chili. The BBQ pork replaces the sugar and adds some additional texture and flavor in addition to the ground beef. Lots of complements.

    Turned out delicious! I added a couple of cloves of fresh minced garlic with the onions, a bit of paprika, and some onion powder just to jazz it up a bit, and all the picky eaters in my house loved it! For the really picky eaters, I would suggest leaving out the tomatoes or blending them up.

    Use small amount of brown sugar to theirs. Should pull out heat.

    Great recipe. I added a few ingredients and it’s delicious. I use half hot Italian sausage and half ground beef. I add a bell pepper and jalapeño with the onion and omit the cayenne. I add fresh garlic, but i don’t omit the garlic powder. It’s delicious every time. 😋

    I followed your recipe pretty close but realized I had no kidney beans but I did have some great northern beans. ( No one noticed). Where I deviated to add my own little flair was… I added ground chipotle pepper instead of cayenne. I love the flavor of chipotle so much. I use it often. And I figured this would be a great add.     I needed a quick and easy last minute, hot and hearty Halloween meal and I found it. I used all the handy ingredients I had in my pantry aside from substituting in black beans. I did leave out the cayenne only because I don’t care for it. My chili-loving teen was impressed with the flavor and thickness and that I whipped it up in a hot minute.   69. Waaaaay too much cumin! If you want a chili with a southwest flavor, then this is the recipe, but it is NOT traditional. Even if you wanted a southwestern flavor, this amount of cumin is overpowering.

    I always used packaged chili seasoning. I have to watch my sodium so I used no salt beef stock I had in my fridge, no salt petite diced tomatoes and no salt tomato sauce. I had a can of light red kidney beans (I know now that there are no salt beans in the market) and half of the cumin. I did end up putting salt in but only a teaspoon and also some cayenne pepper to taste. This is by far the most delicious chili and will be used from now on. My disabled son loved it and gave me a thumbs. It was served with cornbread.

    Really Delicious…sauce was nice and thick…I used black beans and 20 oz ground bison as they’re healthier. Also added a diced green bell pepper and minced garlic instead of powder. Then added the extra amount of spice and other ingredients accordingly but put 1/2 the amount of sugar. Omitted the cayenne and was still spicy enough. Love the prior suggestion of adding a dash of cinnamon…will have to try that next time. Delish!

    So I love slow cooker style! So I cooked the meat and onion and I used ground turkey instead of beef, then added it all to slow cooker on low for 5 hours. I also added an extra tbsp of tomato paste and 1 -15oz can of black beans.

    Amazing!!! Tasted so good! Topped it off with cheese, sour cream, green onion, sriracha, and corn bread!

    I’ve made literally hundreds of pots of chili in dozens of variations throughout the six decades of my life, and while I liked all of them, THIS one takes the cake. I’ve never quite nailed the perfect balance of spice, rich, and slightly sweet like this one does. I’m vegetarian, so I swapped the beef for vegan “ground beef” and couldn’t tell the difference.

    I know Zionsville! My grandparents had the lake across from Loves Truck stop off of the service road next to 65. We called it Idle Hour Lake. Leave the driveway, take a left and Marsh’s was the grocery store. Crazy, isnt it? 🙂 Anyway, your chili was a hit! We like things a little spicy, so I have to say I threw in some smoked Chipolte, and I always add a little black coffee to dishes like this; about 1/4 cup or so.     Great basic old school chili recipe like my mom made. I made this and it’s great as is! Other have mentioned a tiny amount of cinnamon is good. Consider adding a teaspoon on red vinegar and don’t make fun of me 2 tablespoons grape jelly.

    Thank you for a fantastic chili recipe! I’ve tried WAY too many chili recipes that were nothing more than bean and vegetable soup with some chili powder, and realized I was just done with any chili recipe that asked me to start by chopping mounds of celery and carrots. I needed this one!

    We made a few small changes – added a can of black beans (we like our chili with a lot of beans) and a handful of red lentils, used smoked paprika instead of cayenne, and also a heaping spoonful of Korean gochujang paste with the tomato paste, because it adds a kick and serious depth of flavor. Oh, and a can of drained sweetcorn, which really look it over the top to a solid 10 for me.

    We will come back to this again and again.

There’s not a lot of heat to this recipe, so next time I make it I’ll probably omit the sugar and add some diced jalapeños.

    I followed the recipe as it was, and found it far too sweet. I ended up having to add a good amount of cayenne and tabasco to cut the sweetness. Next time, will not be adding sugar at all.

    Very good! I doubled this and used finely diced stew meat for 1lb instead of all ground beef. Only other changes that I made were to cut down a little on sugar and salt, added a diced jalapeño, some fresh roasted Hatch NM green chile and a half cup of dark beer along with the cayenne.     Making it for my son 4 year birthday today and it is absolutely outstanding. Better than canned hormel chili with beans, and we love that one. I will only ever make this recipe.

    – I forgot to get tomato sauce, so I made my own using the leftover paste. I mixed it 1:1 with water until I hit 8 oz. And added 1 clove minced garlic, and Italian seasoning to taste
    -I also used the cayenne pepper (1/4tsp) and it added great flavor, not spicy at all. (If your worried about spice, just add a little less)

    I didn’t realize how hot the cayenne pepper was going to make this chili. I don’t cook with it often. I would suggest cutting it in half or omitting it if you do not like spicy! Otherwise this is a great recipe. We enjoyed it!

      This is now our go to recipe for chili because we love it so much! I omit the cayenne pepper, and I use an entire 15 oz can of beef broth since 12 oz leaves some out to waste. To compensate for the extra liquid, and because we like thicker chili, I also add a small can of tomato paste. We’ve recently been replacing the sugar with a granulated sugar substitute as we are trying to be as sugar free as possible.       Agree with the previous comment cut down the Cumin and definitely cut down the sugar. To add don’t use granulated sugar use brown sugar instead. If you can use chop roast home ground, it’s better quality, no fillers and the taste of the meat screams chili!! Otherwise this is a really good quick recipe.

      I used all of the spices as indicated including cayenne pepper. I chopped peeled, fresh tomatoes from the garden rather than using canned and I added an extra tablespoon of tomato paste with a little filtered water to replace the tomato juice that would have been in the can. I added an extra can of kidney beans and I used 2 lbs of stew beef instead of hamburger. It’s absolutely delicious and *flavor-full* !

      I love the suggestions of toppings to include the chopped avocado. I’m sharing this with friends who always, like me, buy the chilli packet from the grocery store.

      I love to use organic spices and this recipe allows me to do just that.

    Excellent & definitely my fave! Made vegetarian with a bag of frozen veggie crumbles and veggie broth instead of beef. Added 1/4 cup more veggie broth to make up for not having beef drippings and to allow longer simmer time (1 hr) to develop flavors. Also added a can of pinto beans.       Cook the onions and beef in a frying pan. Once cooked, add to the crockpot with the rest of the remaining ingredients. I would turn the temperature to high until it starts to bubble then switch to low and simmer for a few hours to let the flavors come through. I hope this helps.

  166. I made this tonight and tripled it, we’re a huge family, very yummy! I’ll be honest I cooked my beef and then dumped all the other ingredients in, then hard simmered it for 30 min. Next time I’ll try to give myself more time to actually follow the instructions 😂 but it was excellent and everyone liked it. I used about 1/2 t of cayenne (I don’t really measure just eyeball) and it had nice warm heat, 4 yo littlest loved it.

    This is a very good recipe but I thought that there was too much salt in it even after cutting the salt to 3/4 of a teaspoon and using beef broth with 50% less salt. That is why I gave it 4 stars. Other than that, it’s a great recipe.

    This is a great, easy to make crowd-pleaser. I love chili but could never just “throw together” a batch. This recipe is delicious with just the right amount of seasoning to be super-flavorable but not over-the-top for any sensitive palates. Hint: cut the optional amount of cayenne in half and it’s just enough to give a hint of heat, and still mild enough that my 8 year old daughter loves it!

    I love this chili! It’s a Sunday standby in the fall and winter, and so easy i’ve basically memorized it. I did find it slightly, *slightly* flat, but adding a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar before simmering brings it to a perfectly balanced flavor. So delicious!

    Once we finished eating my wife said this goes in the family recipie book (replacing 3 others including sister and moms) we added an extra can of beans (white for color) and only used 1 table spoon of cummin, the kids don’t like spice and one plus all the chili was more than enough for us.

    A note of caution. Not all chili powder is created equal. We have some that is super hot and I have to reduce the amount to a small fraction of what the recipe calls for. That said, once I found the right combination, this is my go-to chili recipe.

    I didn’t have any sugar so I added a can of condensed tomato soup as it’s a bit sweet and helped to balance all the spices. I also added two cans of drained mushrooms and a couple of tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce to give it more flavour. Turned out fantastic!

    REALLY good Chili!! Possibly the best I’ve ever had and definitely the best I’ve ever made. And very simple!! The only deviation I made to the recipe was to add about 1/4 lag, chopped green pepper in with the onions.
    I was a little worried about the amount of spices, but it worked beautifully.

    Love this recipe! We made two pots one that was spicy and one that wasn’t. The one that wasn’t spicy I would reduce the amount of chili seasoning that you put in it. I ended up adding a couple of cans of beans to make it not so spicy. It is so good.
    For the spicy one we use rotelle for the diced tomatoes. Both chilies were gone within two days so yummy.

    I consider myself hard to please. But this recipe is by far the best I have ever tasted, and I’m 70 years old. And it’s so easy and simple. Serve this and you will impress your friends. And in my opinion even with the cayenne pepper it is not too spicy hot. But that’s me.
    I was raised in Indiana, so I leave the beans out and serve this over macaroni or spaghetti. For those whose diet is gluten free, get some brown rice pasta from Trader Joe’s.

      You can add whatever you want. I put use black beans and pinto beans instead of kidney beans (a can of each when doubling the recipe) and I cube up a roast rather than using ground beef usually. I consider a recipe like this a starting point and get creative from there.

        Yes, drain the extra grease if you used less than 90/10 pr 93/7. I used 93/7 ground beef so there wasn’t anything to drain. The chili turned out great other than it was a little runny, so I added extra tomato paste and simmered it until the extra liquid dissipated.

    I had to sub chicken broth, left out the sugar but used a can of paste instead of 2 tbsp. It was still awesome!! And very easy!
    Next time Id prob use dried beans from scratch to cut out some sodium. And stew my own tomatoes (same reason). And the time after that I might try ground turkey.       I was on the search for a chili without using tomato juice. I came across this recipe and made it for supper tonight. We loved it! It has an excellent ratio of spices, especially chili powder and cumin. It’s a nice thick chili. My husband usually adds additional chili powder to his chili but didn’t need it with this. Normally I follow a recipe for the first time to the letter, but this time I had about 2 lbs Of leftover smoked beef brisket from poker night, so instead of ground beef, I diced up the brisket, and then doubled the recipe. I’ve never made chili before bc my dad is the chili king and I always have him make it for me, even though I’m 37, but I decided to try it.       This is a really good basic chili. I’ve made it several times and I usually make a double batch then freeze the leftovers. The only changes I’ve made are I leave out the sugar as I think it is plenty sweet from the tomatoes. I also use half hamburger and half sausage caue my mom’s recipe calls for that.
      I really think this recipe is great as is and also provides a good base that you can adjust and tweak to your own liking. Thank you for sharing.

I didn’t have any ground beef so, I used leftover pot rost and the second time I used cubed leftover pork tenderloin and I’ve also used chopped Hatch Green Chile’s. I also omitted the sugar.     Great basic chili. I left out the sugar as it was sweet enough from the tomatoes. If I made a huge batch to feed a crowd I would leave out the cayenne and put some hot sauce on the side. I wouldn’t say this is spicy but some in my circle cannot take any heat.

      I make this quite often for our rescue squad crews. By the recipe, I always have enough for everyone and usually some for the next day. Everyone loves it. Leaving out the cayenne makes it good for all. Available toppings include sour cream, cheese, chopped onions, and hot sauce.

    Great recipe for a basic chili. I agree with previous comments that say the sugar is not needed at all. Having read what other people had said about the sugar before I started, I decided not to add any sugar until I tasted at the very end and it was perfect without it. I also added a green bell pepper, a few cloves of fresh garlic and a jalapeno (instead of cayenne), all added in after the beef was browned and cooked for a few minutes. Delicious!

I do some change up with the meet option, use rótele instead of tomatoes, less sugar or brown sugar, add jalapeños, green peppers, corn, serve over rice or as is! I just adore this recipe and wanted other to know how great it is!

    I could tell that the base of this recipe was really good and delicious. I really enjoyed the flavor, but I found the amount of sugar to be overwhelming for my taste. I’m a savory > sweet kind of person, but even with savory being my preference, I’ve never had a chili that was quite as sweet as this one. I am making this recipe again this week, and I will likely use half a tablespoon of sugar – just enough to counteract the acidity of all the canned tomato.

    I used this recipe because it looked easy enough. I did use a larger can of tomato sauce. Like previous comments, the sugar does not belong. It has the right heat, but the sugar ruined it. Will try again without sugar.

      I made this chili 3 times now and never did put the sugar in as called for in the recipe. I minimize my family’s sugar use as a general rule. I also reduced the salt. It tasted great without sugar and with less salt.

      I only did half the sugar and it is still way too sweet. Other than that it is a good recipe. I made some honey cornbread to go alongside it.

      This will be my go to chili recipe from now on. Just the way we like our chili! Made it exactly as directed (including all the sugar and cayenne) except I had no tomato sauce, so added two more TBLS tomato paste and an extra 1/2 cup of water. Next time I’ll make sure I have tomato sauce, but excellent with the minor substitution anyway.

    A great base for a chili recipe – I recommend it for anyone thinking – I am in the mood for chili. You can eat this as written or endlessly riff on it. Thank you for the recipe. I made the basic recipe and dumped all the leftovers from the fridge in it and poured on killer Thai bird chilies. But it’s the base that brings it all together.

    I will definitely use this again.

    This recipe was seasoned perfectly, I added 1/2 cup extra of the broth, and it had the best texture.

    Key is to use 93%or lower fat beef to help reduce the oil, however, it still tasted delicious with higher fat beef.

    This is THE BEST Chili ever! I love to cook and have experimented with many chili recipes. This one has simple ingredients with simple instructions to follow. I make it exactly as written in the recipe and we absolutely LOVE IT! It is so flavorful and satisfying to eat. The high temp today in Texas was 94 degrees and I am making this chili for dinner… that’s how good it is. 🙂 I have made this chili many times and it always comes together perfectly.

    I make this at least once a month, but I tweaked it by adding lots more beans–an extra can of black beans, garbanzo beans, and pinto beans each, as I am trying to reduce my meat intake. Everyone who I have try it loves it. Thank you for sharing it.

    Super glad I found this recipe. It was easy to follow and it turned out great. Amazingly enough we had just about every ingredient necessary. The only missing ingredients were the ground cumin and tomato sauce. I used ground comino instead and that worked perfectly. I also used an extra tablespoon of tomato paste to make up for the lack of tomato sauce. And we used a sugar substitute, but hey it turned out waaaay better than I could have hoped! I’m actually inclined to curse with how good this turned out. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ worthy!

    This has become my only chili recipe – I’ve made it at least a dozen times. Only addition I make is a some chopped up celery, just because my Grandma always did.     First time making chili and I have to say this recipe is delicious!!! I used 8oz of tomato paste instead of the tomato sauce and added 1 cup of water. I also added 2 extra cans of beans because we love beans in this house!

    Definitely my go to recipe for chili. I may tweak a little. Just because. :). I use brown sugar and add a little Worcestershire. Chop up peppers and onions , use a mix of beans, ( cannoli kidney and black) to make it my own. PT

    I’ve made a lot of different chili recipes but this is my favorite. And it’s so easy. Here’s what I did differently. I was out of tomato paste so omitted, my husband dislikes cumin so I only used 1 Tbsp instead of 2, and I added one can of drained pinto beans in addition to kidney beans. Fantastic and easy!

    Excellent as is. I used the cayenne and it has just enough bite. Just adults so heat is no concern. Best chili I’ve ever made, according to my two grown grandsons.
