- Cook for 6-7 minutes.
- Add chili powder, cumin, sugar, tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and optional cayenne.

- sour cream
- sliced green onions

What goes well with chili for dinner?
I’ve been playing around with this chili recipe for the past few months, making it many times. My family didn’t mind the repetition at all because I really do believe that I ended up with the best chili ever!

Check out all of my great ground beef recipes.
Great basic chili. I left out the sugar as it was sweet enough from the tomatoes. If I made a huge batch to feed a crowd I would leave out the cayenne and put some hot sauce on the side. I wouldn’t say this is spicy but some in my circle cannot take any heat.
All in all I thought this recipe is a definite keeper.
So easy and one of the best.
I made this recipe exactly as the instructions are including the cayenne. I only made one addition by adding a can of pinto beans as well as the kidney beans as stated in the recipe because my family loves beans. It turned out perfectly. We love spice and it satisfied. This is my new chili recipe go to. Thank you so much for sharing!
My go to Chile recipe. I’ve made this a few times. I do use pinto beans that I cook in my crockpot and it just takes it to the next level❣️
Looks good but How much is a serving? A cup? Two cups? 1/6 of the recipe is no help in planning if I’d like to make this or how much
Love this recipe! Been using it for two years now but I’m starting to count calories. What’s the serving size? Sorry if I’ve overlooked it.
Easy and absolutely delicious! I used Rotel diced tomatoes with green chilies.
Love this recipe!!!
First time I made Chili in my life and it came out PERFECT. I was so impressed. I followed directions and was surpised how well it came out. My Husband likes chili spicy so if you make it and like it spicy, just bump up the the spicies a bit – it will still come out perfect for you. SO EASY and Fast to make. Taste even better the next day.
Highly Recommended!
Thank You
Loved it! So easy! Next time I will cut the sugar to one tablespoon, I found it a little too sweet for my taste but others didn’t complain. Also tried without the cayenne because at the end, before putting the cayenne I tasted and was Spice enough for me and everyone loved.
The best chili recipe. I live in Louisiana where flavor is everything and this recipe has got it all! Definitely my families favorite! Great on hot dogs too! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This the best chili recipe I have ever made. It’s full of flavor spiciness aroma and it’s very addictive.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe
Great recipe for a basic chili. I agree with previous comments that say the sugar is not needed at all. Having read what other people had said about the sugar before I started, I decided not to add any sugar until I tasted at the very end and it was perfect without it. I also added a green bell pepper, a few cloves of fresh garlic and a jalapeno (instead of cayenne), all added in after the beef was browned and cooked for a few minutes. Delicious!
Made with left over turkey.
Thanks! Nice, quick recipe.
This is the best chili ever. I like to add jalapeños and sriracha and use honey instead of sugar and it tastes amazing. I also used a mixture of ground beef and spicy Italian sausage once and it was a great addition. I always freeze this and take it camping for the perfect dinner. Thank you!!!
This is my go-to recipe. Perfect. Ty.
Superb Chili! The best ever! Perfect!
I tweaked this recipe a little bit to fit my liking more. This is *the* best base recipe ever though!
I added half the amount of broth
No sugar
I added super hot cayenne pepper seasoning
The rest of the recipe I followed exactly like shown and its my go-to. So good!
Delicious! It was perfect! Thank you!
I’m not one to leave a comment but I needed to because I’ve been using this recipe for the better half of 2 years for my base chili and I’ve never been disappointed. I do some change up with the meet option, use rótele instead of tomatoes, less sugar or brown sugar, add jalapeños, green peppers, corn, serve over rice or as is! I just adore this recipe and wanted other to know how great it is!
Made this several times. Good taste, easy to make!
I could tell that the base of this recipe was really good and delicious. I really enjoyed the flavor, but I found the amount of sugar to be overwhelming for my taste. I’m a savory > sweet kind of person, but even with savory being my preference, I’ve never had a chili that was quite as sweet as this one. I am making this recipe again this week, and I will likely use half a tablespoon of sugar – just enough to counteract the acidity of all the canned tomato.
I used this recipe because it looked easy enough. I did use a larger can of tomato sauce. Like previous comments, the sugar does not belong. It has the right heat, but the sugar ruined it. Will try again without sugar.
I made this chili 3 times now and never did put the sugar in as called for in the recipe. I minimize my family’s sugar use as a general rule. I also reduced the salt. It tasted great without sugar and with less salt.
Honestly this is the only chili recipe I use now. I do experiment sometimes but this is always my base.
Easy and floavorful. A winning combination.
Wanted to learn how to make chilli so I tried a bunch of recipes, combinations and permutations. This is my family’s favourite recipe. I add other beans as well. They cayenne is a bit too spicy for them but they like a little bit. Thank you for posting this!
Amazing! So much flavour.
Always the best chili recipe. Have made it more than 10 times and my client love it. Thanks
I only did half the sugar and it is still way too sweet. Other than that it is a good recipe. I made some honey cornbread to go alongside it.
Sorry but this recipe called for too much sugar unfortunately my family didn’t enjoy it. I may make it again but omit the sugar
This will be my go to chili recipe from now on. Just the way we like our chili! Made it exactly as directed (including all the sugar and cayenne) except I had no tomato sauce, so added two more TBLS tomato paste and an extra 1/2 cup of water. Next time I’ll make sure I have tomato sauce, but excellent with the minor substitution anyway.
Thanks for this recipe! I followed pretty much exactly, except used half the amount of sugar.
This was very easy to make and delicious. Before I was using premade chili kits and they were bland, but from now on I’m making it like this!
A great base for a chili recipe – I recommend it for anyone thinking – I am in the mood for chili. You can eat this as written or endlessly riff on it. Thank you for the recipe. I made the basic recipe and dumped all the leftovers from the fridge in it and poured on killer Thai bird chilies. But it’s the base that brings it all together.
I will definitely use this again.
Really good recipe that’s simple too! I used only one tbsp of sugar and almost could’ve gone with less. Will be making again
This recipe was seasoned perfectly, I added 1/2 cup extra of the broth, and it had the best texture.
Key is to use 93%or lower fat beef to help reduce the oil, however, it still tasted delicious with higher fat beef.
This is THE BEST Chili ever! I love to cook and have experimented with many chili recipes. This one has simple ingredients with simple instructions to follow. I make it exactly as written in the recipe and we absolutely LOVE IT! It is so flavorful and satisfying to eat. The high temp today in Texas was 94 degrees and I am making this chili for dinner… that’s how good it is. 🙂 I have made this chili many times and it always comes together perfectly.
It was delicious! I added ketchup instead of tomato paste as I was out so it had a nice sweet /spicy tang.
OMG, delicious! I used the recipe with no changes and its a winner in our house. I will make a double batch next time so that some can be frozen for another meal. I have been making chili for over 40 years and this is the 1st time I have written a review, so it must be good! Thanks for sharing this recipe with us, its a keeper!
I make this at least once a month, but I tweaked it by adding lots more beans–an extra can of black beans, garbanzo beans, and pinto beans each, as I am trying to reduce my meat intake. Everyone who I have try it loves it. Thank you for sharing it.
can you do in crockpot
Just made this and it’s so delicious
The seasoning is perfect! I was short on regular chili powder and used Aleppo instead. Easy and delicious! I will make this again!
I love this chili recipe. I use the optional cayenne and I add corn to mine, and it is delicious. I love how fast and easy it is, too. Thank you for sharing.
Super glad I found this recipe. It was easy to follow and it turned out great. Amazingly enough we had just about every ingredient necessary. The only missing ingredients were the ground cumin and tomato sauce. I used ground comino instead and that worked perfectly. I also used an extra tablespoon of tomato paste to make up for the lack of tomato sauce. And we used a sugar substitute, but hey it turned out waaaay better than I could have hoped! I’m actually inclined to curse with how good this turned out. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ worthy!
I would have to say this is a pretty good chili. It is also easy to make. I was a little skeptical about the sugar but everything blended perfectly. The family loved it. Thanks for sharing.
This has become my only chili recipe – I’ve made it at least a dozen times. Only addition I make is a some chopped up celery, just because my Grandma always did. But this recipe far superior to any others I’ve ever tried (including Grandma’s). This turns out fabulous every time! Thank you so much for sharing with us all!!
I love celery. I never thought to add it to chili…thanks for the idea!
Amazing. Had to stop myself from a second helping. I’m dairy allergic so this was a treat. Made homemade cornbread to have with the chilli. Perfect meal for a cold and rainy May day.
So delicious!
First time making chili and I have to say this recipe is delicious!!! I used 8oz of tomato paste instead of the tomato sauce and added 1 cup of water. I also added 2 extra cans of beans because we love beans in this house!
Definitely my go to recipe for chili. I may tweak a little. Just because. :). I use brown sugar and add a little Worcestershire. Chop up peppers and onions , use a mix of beans, ( cannoli kidney and black) to make it my own. PT
I’ve made a lot of different chili recipes but this is my favorite. And it’s so easy. Here’s what I did differently. I was out of tomato paste so omitted, my husband dislikes cumin so I only used 1 Tbsp instead of 2, and I added one can of drained pinto beans in addition to kidney beans. Fantastic and easy!
Excellent as is. I used the cayenne and it has just enough bite. Just adults so heat is no concern. Best chili I’ve ever made, according to my two grown grandsons.
This was Fantastic! The Best Chili I have ever made & easy to fix. Thank you for sharing the recipe!
This IS the best chili I’ve ever made! I made it exactly as the recipe called for except for the cayenne pepper. I will be making this again.
Awesome chili, I won a chili cook off contest in my category with this recipe.
Delicious!! I added a few celery sticks with the onion, perfect chilli recipe.
Didn’t care for the sugar in it. It was a little to sweet for my tast.
WOW 👌 THAT IS REALLY GREAT!!!
At age 79 this was my first try at chili, and I got 5 stars! This is really good.
Amazing! The only extra I added was mushrooms 🙂 mine and my fiances favorite !!!
Made this several times, excellent. I use 1 TBS of sugar instead of 2 TBS. That’s the only change I made. Comes out great every time. Leftovers, if any, usually gone by 5he next day.
Great recipe. The only thing i did was add garlic and green pepper with the onion. Dont pass this one up!
Hands down best chili EVER!!! You won’t be disappointed! Amazing!!
Really good and easy… I will make it again soon but will cut the sugar, this was too sweet for me! Thanks.
Never liked making chili till now excellent recipe and can be tweaked to specific flavor liking. Can’t go wrong with this one. No complaints from family and guests and I appreciate the simple affordable ingredients. Seems like a lot of seasoning but don’t hold back …. This is a keeper
My wife and I love this recipe and plan on making it for a party of 50 people. How would the cooking times change for the added quantity?
I made your chili recipe once before and it was delicious.
I don’t want to sound ignorant but I’m wondering if you drain the fat/grease from the ground beef?
I love this recipe! Made on my dinner break and it was very easy to make!! Portion size was just enough for two people. Made it with a salad and My boyfriend loves it. Thank you
I use this chili recipe and always use low sodium chicken broth and it is fine. I would suggest skipping the cayenne unless you like it very spicy.
It’s perfect!! The spices & ingredients are wonderful! I added a little celery & green peppers to the pot cause I needed to use them. It’s so good & perfect for dinner. Thanks.
My secret ingredient (until now) is chipotle peppers in adobe sauce, Smoky and spice works as well as cayenne. And since a can of these is more than you can ever use, the rest goes into a ziplock freezer bag. My frozen chipotle block can then be pulled from the freezer and a cut off a “chunk” when I need it.
Made this chili for hubby and I and served with chili dogs. Delicious! 😋
Topped w/ sour cream, green onions and mexican style cheese…
Very easy recipe to follow…Thank you for sharing with us…😁
Love this recipe! So easy and delicious. I add canned green chilies simply because I like them. Thank you for sharing.
I was never a Chili eater until my sister made this recipe.
Well I love Chili now!! It’s delicious and my family loves it too.
I use this recipe as the basis for my chilli but I tweek it a little every time. I add all the extras. 2 and a half tablespoons of chilli powder can be a bit much depending on the powder your using. Today I’m adding olives, mushrooms and jalapeños. It’s a great recipe it impresses every time.
I made this recipe for chili once and my kids loved it. It is the only recipe I will use.
Pretty good, my only recommendation is to reduce or remove the sugar. I used 1 1/2 tbsp instead of 2, and even that was too much – it’s noticeably sweet. Added a touch of liquid smoke which was good.
The spices and tomatoes all meld together in a wonderful way after it bubbles for the 20 min in the last step. I added macaroni to it (1 cup dry, but cook it and drain),which cut the richness of the tomatoes just right. I love this recipe!
I have tried everything in my chili including dill pickle juice and beer. I never seem to get the seasoning just right. The “spiciness” of this recipe is just right. I was a little concerned about the sugar, but trusted the recipe and so glad that I did. The only thing that I changed was that I used 2 cans of beans. We just like a hearty, bean-y chili. It was perfect, except that i forgot to add the tomato paste to the meat and spice mixture and I know that would have increased the depth of flavor. It’s a keeper! Thank you!
Great recipe. I made all kinds of tweaks and substitutions, but nothing that deviated to much from the core ratios. The two main substitutions I made were soyrizzo instead of beef and vegetable stock instead of beef stock, so my version is accidentally vegan.
I found this recipe about 2-3 years ago and continue to use it to this day. Making it again tonight!! Hands down, best chili ever!
I am not a cook at all, I followed this recipe and my picky family loved it now I can add this to my list which will make three dishes. Thank you so much.
The best, I make it times 4 for a lot of left overs.
I’ve tried many, many chili recipes over the past 20 years and this one is hands-down my favorite. I don’t use quite as much cumin or garlic and I add a bit more ground beef than the recipe calls for to make it meatier. (3 lbs for a double recipe) I also sub a 12 ounce bottle of beer for some of the beef stock. Perfection.
So delicious!! We’re not eating red meat so I used ground turkey and added 1 can of diced chili peppers (the mild ones)
Just used the above recipe but with venison! It was delicious! Thank you for sharing.
I thought this recipe was a lot better than OK, but not the best chili I’ve ever had (it’s a lot better if you re-heat it the next day!). My wife, though, thinks this is the best thing I’ve ever made in the kitchen, and has requested it 5 times in as many weeks. I think the recipe is heavy on the cumin, but if you really like cumin, then 2 tablespoons is just about perfect – otherwise, you’ll probably be happier with using a little less than the recipe calls for.
Very simple and delicious! I added some squares of very dark chocolate to make it nice and rich! Thanks for the recipe!
Our go to chili recipe!!
I’m a Texas gal married to a California beach boy, he says it’s the best! I’m 73 years old and my husband is 80. Needless to say, we’ve tried a lot of chili recipes. Thank you for sharing!
It’s definitely the best I’ve ever made! Instead of olive oil I used bacon grease AND added chopped bacon! Delish!
I just made my 3rd round of this chili and my family loves it. Easy to make fast recipe on a school night the day of and it turns out fantastic. Usually chili is better the next day as is true with this recipe but not necessary. Even with an 8 and 11 year old I use the cayenne and get no complaints.
Can l use pinto beans
I have so much pintos
I always thought I made great chili… then my husband became a recipe chaser and then everyone preferred his to mine…. Until I found this recipe…..the first time I forgot the sugar and it was amazing! No leftovers!!!! Tonight I followed exactly!!! YUMMY!!!
i was using a smiliar receipt but it had minced oniln instead of fresh and no beef broth, i think it was more tomoto sauce instread. so im excited to try this one.
Sooo good. I really like this recipe. Easy to follow and delicious.
This recipe is on our meal rotation
I haven’t tried it with the cayenne pepper and I put green peppers in it. We love this chili. Thank you
This is hands down the best chili recipe I’ve ever tried. I follow the recipe to a T and I double it. I find that the Cayenne makes it a little too spicy for my liking so I put just a teeny bit. I add some fiesta cheese on top and me and my fiancé LOVE it. I have been making this for quite some time now I jus haven’t taken the time to review it. I promise you won’t regret trying this chili soo yummy!
I made this this evening, following the recipe exactly as written, with one exception. I added a 4 oz. can of diced Hatch chili peppers. This is the best pot of chili I’m made in a long time and it was certainly the easiest.👍👍👍👍
Everybody eats my food on Chili night with this recipe! Its easy, hearty, and a family favorite!
Turned out great! Will use again, thank you!
Incredible recipe! I made it for my boyfriend. I added chopped red bell pepper and it was delicious! I also kept the stove on low heat prior to serving so it stayed warm. Thank you!!!
I’ve added this to my regular rotation of recipes. It truly is a classic chili. Husband loves it. And I love how easy it is to make ;3
I typically like spicier chili, however with three picky kids, I made this recipe and they all loved it. I continue to follow this recipe now and we enjoy it.
Tastes Great! Easy to make. 3 year old gave it 2 thumbs up! 👍🏻👍🏻
It was delicious! The recipe was exact, the ingredients were on-hand, and the directions were simple to follow!
Thank you for this recipe. It will be used now for every time I make chili.
This chili is criminally good. Please make this. You will thank me later.
I just had my husband stop at the store to get a few things for this recipe. I’m hoping it will be good. My husband is so picky when it comes to chili. 🤞🏼
I thank you!
I used elk burger, and this is probably THE BEST chili I have ever made ! Thanks so very much for the recipe
sounds good. Is 25 mins enough for it?
Sooooo yummy! THe best chili I’ve made! I just put in about 3/4 Tbsp less chili powder so it wouldn’t be spicy for me or the kids!
What can I use instead of beef broth ?
Chicken broth
Vegetable or mushroom broth maybe if your tryna make it vegan, I made mine vegan tonight with gardien grounds so good
Chicken broth or vegetable stock.
Vegetable broth should work or even water
Are you trying to avoid meat? If so, you can try vegetable broth. If you are just looking for a substitute in your pantry, you could try chicken broth or just water with a dash of extra salt. Or even a bouillon cube.
Add a 2nd 8oz can of tomato sauce. That’s what I did, turned out great.
Chicken broth or vegetable broth. Can also use water and bouillon cubes.
I use beer
I didn’t use any broth. I used 2 cans of tomatoes
Hi! I used turkey and then chicken broth since we don’t eat red meat !
Great recipe, I added liquid smoke to the beef and added corn and peppers. Turned out to be the best chili I’ve ever made! Thanks a bunch!!:)
This chili is amazing! Perfect mix of spices and seasonings. It makes a great base to add in extras too. I substituted ground venison and added a can of green chili’s. Sooooo good!
How much liquid smoke to one pound ground beef?
I used chicken broth and seasoned diced tomatoes. Added a drizzle of olive oil. It turned out delicious.
If I double the recipe should I double all ingredients? Thanks!
Amazing chili recipe. I used Rotel instead of regular diced tomatoes. Only mistake I made was adding the sugar. Will omit it next time.
Made it for the second time. Husband hates what I cook. He came back for seconds both times.
Great Everytime I make it
This turns out awesome every time. I leave out the cayenee.
I add cocoa powder. Great recipe!
I made this for a chili cook off at my work and I won first place! I had never made chili on my own before, so I am grateful I found this recipe.
Delicious!!! I first found this a couple years back and it is still my favorite. Once I found this recipe, I haven’t needed any other chili recipe. The flavors are so good! Highly recommend!
Great recipe!!!!! I guess most people don’t realize that it’s not unusual to add sugar to recipes containing tomato sauce because it cuts down on the acidity and makes it more balanced. I sometimes add corn to mine as well.
So, I rarely cook anything that’s cool. Hubby has been asking off and on for chili. I found your recipe and it looked simple enough, so I gave it a try. My hubby went nuts for it! I believe I did very well! Easy peasy for me! I hate kidney beans…I only added one can. I LOVED them! This recipe spice clearly made them stupid good! I just made it again tonight and am waiting for it as I write. TY TY TY! I’ve got to look at more of your recipes! I feel like a chef now and this has motivated me to cook more things that I never thought I could do.
Yes! Excellent. Minor tweaks like using fire roasted tomatoes and no sugar, but other than that followed pretty closely.
it was very good and easy to make! I did not add the sugar, and did add 1 can of drained black bean! Will make again and again!
Really outstanding. I had to make some changes, using stew meat instead of ground beef and therefore used the slow cooker. Also used fire-roasted tomatoes and cut the sugar in half. But even with those changes I think the recipe as written would still be amazing. Highly recommended.
Very good flavor. Will make again.
Definitely my go to chilli recipe, in fact I have to double it because my grown kids want some too!!
My WHOLE family LOVE this recipe!!!!!
Thank you.
Made chili for the first time last NYE and it turned out super good. Everyone at home loved it!
I do use packaged chili seasoning and it works well except it is a bit spicier than measuring out separate spices. Other than that I use the same ingredients. My beef is leaner 96 or 93 %… it really is delicious… and even better the next day!
Craving chili for this chilly day. Found this recipe and loved all the ingredients. Made pretty much to the T. Except did not have paste so I used a little ketchup. Used Rotel diced chilis and tomatoes and a little extra chili powder. . We love hot. Topped with sour cream, cheese and white onions. Love, love👍🏻
Delicious and easy to make. It’s our permanent chili recipe now!
My husband asked me to make my famous chili. 😳 I’ve alwaysed used pre-made packages. Today I used this delicious recipe, and we both live it! ❤😋
Best chili I ever eaten!!! Every seasonings was perfect amount, I just added 1 teaspoon sugar, don’t pay attention to the people who have always taste problems. Good job with your recipe! Thank you! It’s a keeper!
My husband always says “this is your best yet!” every time I use this recipe 🤣. I absolutely love this recipe! It’s basic, fast, and not complicated. I’m just wondering if u would have to change anything (like add more broth) if u were to cook it in an instapot 🤔. Can u try it and lmk? Lol thanks!
I was wondering if could use sour cream &chive mashed potatoes instead of just sour cream then continue to top with what ever toppings.cheese ,bacon, jalapeños
I found this recipie quite by accident. Made it and my mom LOOOOVED IT!
For me, that’s the ticket we had it with cornbread!
Thank you whomever is the poster if this delicious chili
This first time I made it it was way too sweet, but the other flavors were spot on. So I made it again with just 2 teaspoons of sugar and it was great! This is now my go to chili recipe.
BEST CHILI EVER! This is my go to recipe and my boyfriend and I LOVE IT! Very simple and followed the directions to a T.
This was the best chilli recipe I’ve ever tried! So quick and easy. Tasted delicious 😋
This was quick and easy and delicious. I had to substitute cannelini (white kidney) beans for red kidney bean and I did not drain them — all in!. I halved the cumin and the cayenne after reading comments. The five minute resting was essential to it becoming less soupy. Served with the great cornbread linked in the site.
Awesome! I cooked it exactly as described and it was great!
The best chili recipe! I leave out the optional cayenne. I use petite diced stewed tomatoes that come pre-seasoned in the can with cracked black pepper and olive oil. Top with sour cream and shredded old cheddar. Delish!
Made it for 14 men. My husband said they loved it and was gone in no time. I really liked using beef broth instead of tomato juice.
Just made this for dinner & my boyfriend & I both thought it turned out great!
Delish! Easy, tasty, large portion for 2, however left overs still delicious.
Cumin is a must in chili! That’s what makes it taste like true chili, IMHO, not extra chili powder!
Excellent chili, I’ve never used sugar before but it turned out incredible.
I wish I could have had some leftovers but everyone loved it!!
I used plain yogurt instead of sour cream for the ending touch. This is the best chili recipe ever!
Perfect gold standard. Exactly what I was craving. We do half and half beef/pork. Very tasty. Easy and spices were spot on. Good enough to pass on lugging the instant pot out! Thanks!!
This is truly the best chili I have ever tasted/made. It has taken me years to find a chili recipe my family LOVES. THIS IS IT!!! I double the meat, use double chili beans instead of kidney beans, and use crushed tomatoes (28 ounce can) instead of diced tomatoes.
This was so delicious and easy to prepare My husband eat 2 full bowls. A smal twist: I topped it with cottage cheese and WOW!!!
Best recipe! Hard to please husband loved it! The only things I did differently were I doubled the recipe, added more beans and omitted the sugar.
I followed this recipe exactly as written and it is delicious. Everyone loves it. There is nothing I would change.
This recipe is fantastic!!
Loved…loved….loved this recipe! Thank you
Tomatoes and onions are naturally sweet. Sugar can be cut out completely.
Best chili I’ve ever tasted. I’ve made it a number of times, always doubling up the ingredients. I use ground turkey rather than beef, and beef bone broth for added flavor. Instead of white sugar I use an equal mix of cinnamon and brown sugar, which I find really compliment the cumin and chili powder. Serve it topped with shredded cheddar and some additional diced onions
This is my go-to chili recipe. I’ve made it at leadt a dozen times. Always delicious!
I get rave reviews whenever I cook this. I substitute the following for a healthier version:
93% lean ground turkey
Chicken broth low sodium
Truvia/Stevia in place of sugar
I add the Cayenne for heat
Black beans in place of kidney beans (personal choice)
I make sure to cook this in the afternoon – then take off the burner, keep covered until ready for dinner. Just turn up the heat to low-med to get it nice and warm. This way the flavors have time to marry. Delicious!
Really good chili! My kids aren’t big fans of spices, so I went a little easy on them and they ate it up!
Excellent chili. I halved the cumin, but did everything else according to the recipe. I used cayenne per the recipe, maybe a little bit more. Very tasty and satisfying chili. Easy and quick, too! I give this 5 stars and highly recommend it.
I love the flavor of this chili. It is perfect as is. However, I find that the amount of broth is a bit much. My family and I prefer a thicker chili.
You could add a cornstarch slurry to it to thicken it up without having to cut down the amount of broth. Or you can let it rest longer to get it to thicken up.
Follwed the recipe exactly and absolutely love it. Left out the cayenne and ut still had enough spicy heat. Very good flavour and texture.
This was tasty; the only issue I have is the sugar. I love potatoes in my chili. I always add to my chili or I like to take a baked potato adding our favorite fixings. Kids love this.
Note: If you don’t make your own tomato sauce or paste, then pay attention to how much sugar is in each jar. 10 grams of sugar is the maximum that people should eat in one day.
Cheers.
What is the serving size of this beef chili recipe? Is it a half a cup or is it one cup?
Best chili I have ever made. Followed exactly including cayenne pepper 🌶. My husband really enjoyed it as well. Great consistency and flavor.
My husband absolutely loved this recipe! I followed the recipe except I put only 1 Tablespoon of cumin and a can of pinto beans instead of kidney beans. Delicious!!
My favorite recipe!
This was actually my first time making chili. I added 2 ingredients because I’m like that, and it was amazing. I added a 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon of Carolina Reaper powder and about a teaspoon of Smokehouse Maple seasoning. It was sweet on the lips and deceiving before I started sweating.
Loving so many attributes of this recipe: Quick to make, easy to adjust dry ingredients as I decided ( on the spot, after tasting) to make extra and freeze for another time. I have a 22 month young babe at home, am almost due to have another and my hubby works out in the snow cutting and splitting wood. Baby doesn’t like much spice, I like a little more but have to watch for acid reflux (so I added vinegar in the chilly) and my hubby likes spice that makes him sweat a little. This RECIPE IS PERFECT for our family.
Thank you for sharing your skills with the world.
I made this chilly twice and my family has said they will not eat canned chilly again. This is a REALLY GREAT Chilly. Love it.
always a great recipe. Do you know how I adjust it for use with an instapot?
Too sweet for chili. I would cut out all the sugar, or at least half of it.
Planning to make this this weekend – can you clarify “tomato sauce”? Do you mean like a Passata or do you mean a marinara sauce? Sorry, I don’t want to mess up!
Great recipe! I used ground turkey, not a huge fan of beef. It turned out Awesome. I used the cayenne as well. Not to spicy! Just the right amount. I served with cheese, sour cream and Doritos on top! 🙂 Don’t knock it until you try it.
I made this recipe with my high school cooking class. They LOVED it, and the classroom and building smelled delicious for hours. I chose to substitute the beef broth with water and a little more of the spice seasonings. I’m going to try adding paprika next time.
I followed the recipe almost exactly and it turned out amazing. Only thing different I did was adding a bit of water to the chilli so I could easily get it to the boiling point before letting it simmer. I don’t know why people think that the recipe calls for too much cumin, maybe they aren’t measuring it properly or are just overly sensitive to spices. I just used a regular tablespoon and levelled it so it’s not a heaping tablespoon. Also used two cans of red kidney beans rather than one
First time making chili. Growing up it was one of my favorites that my dad would make. Always thought (Wrongly, as I learned last night) that it was a long semi-complicated process. This was very easy and turned out very good! I put it on top of corn chips with sour cream and cheese. Couldn’t have asked for a better result. Thank you!
Amazing recipe. Love it! Thank you for sharing.
This is one of the best chili recipes I’ve ever tasted and it’s so easy to make!! I add 1/2 tsp. of cayenne pepper and that goes great with the sweetness from the sugar.
My boyfriend loves home cooking and I love to get in the kitchen and make nice meals for him! I work the nightshift in the ER and don’t always have the time to cook. So when I found this recipe, was excited to try it! He actually said this is the best tasting chili he has ever had! I had only added one tablespoon of sugar and found it to be a little too sweet, so next time will cut to 1/2 tablespoon. Always better to add more later than too much in the beginning! Easy and quick to make! Topped with cheddar cheese and diced raw onion! Warms you up on a cold night! This recipe is a keeper! BTW: Cayenne pepper 🌶️ is great if you like the kick!
Great recipe! Made a few tweaks in part due to young kiddos eating it, but turned out great IMO:
-no cayenne, small can of mild green chilies instead
-sub Pinto beans
-add heavy cream to taste (think I probably did about 1/3 C
Used an immersion blender to smooth it out a little bit a the end (kids don’t love finding a bunch of beans) and it was a crowd pleaser. Would recommend doubling this recipe since leftover chili is even better than the original and not much is left with just one batch!
My family loves this chili, it’s quick and taste even better the next day. I’ve made this recipe several times-never disappoints!
Excellent recipe!
I used beef ‘Better than bouillon’ and beer for the liquid. I also added half a tablespoon of madras curry for some adventure. It was a hit.
Loved this recipe, I really liked that it uses beef broth, cuts down on the acidic flavor some chilis have. Will be my forever chili recipe.
Best chili I’ve ever made. Some reviews say it’s too much Cumin, but I disagree. I used the Cayenne, used only 1 tablespoon of sugar, used Kobe burger and added a can of chopped green chilies. It was a HIT!
This chili was the perfect comfort food for freezing weather! All the ingredients were pantry staples so no trips to the grocery necessary! I made it exactly as written but without the beans. I served it with tortilla chips for a little crunch and added some jalapenos for an extra kick! Definitely will make this again!.
This may be the Best Chili that I’ve ever made! I did half on the sugar, but I love cumin and to me the flavor was perfect! My husband loved it too!
I made this last night for dinner. It was the best chili recipe I have found and will definitely make again.
I only made a few changes. 1) I doubled the recipe 2) after reading a comment posted about too much cummin,
I cut back on it a little. Since I doubled recipe, I used 3 T cummin instead of 4. 3) simmered it all day. This recipe
Is a keeper. Thanks for sharing it
Have been making Chili for years, thoroughly enjoyed this recipe, quick and easy. I did however add about one to two tablespoons of Dijon mustard. Will make this again.
Love this recipe. I add a poblano chili , 1/2 bell pepper with onion. I also added a beer with other liquids. Loved it.
Way to much sugar. Use less than half as directed unless you want a sweet treat.
Perfect for us, just how it is written.
Delicious ! Spot on! This is going to get me through a terrible winter storm getting ready to hit my area. Thank you!
Delicious flavor. Easy to make. Enjoyed eating this Dish. Did not give me gas or a stomach ache.
Made it exactly the way the recipe said to and it was amazing!
This is fantastic, just the right amount of spice. I am so glad I found this recipe, I will be making it for years to come.
I added a tablespoon of crushed chili peppers to give it a bit more depth. Overall a great classic recipe.
Love this recipe! I used 1 tblspoon of sugar instead of two. And I do like cumin so the blend of seasonings was just right for me. I’ll definitely make this again.
Followed the recipe except for the tomato paste, because I didn’t have any. Came out great! Will be making this again, Thanks!
If I could rate this a 6, I would. The family and I ate three portions of nice size bowl serving because it was so good. The balance of the ingredients is what makes it as I’ve had chili my whole life. I made it with pork my favorite meat and it was amazing. I made it as is and I highly recommend it
This was excellent! My only modifications were to cut cumin and chili powder to 1 tablspoon each… I did add about a half teaspoon of smoked paprika for a little smokey flavor. I’ll add pepper flakes or cayenne pepper for more heat at the end. Start slow and ramp up!!
Everyone i made it for LOVED IT. The three of us ate the whole pot. I do agree about the too much Cumin though. But i seem to be the only one who noticed it everyone else said that it was “perfect” so i would definitely recommend!
This is a great recipe! I dont use as much cumin or sugar though and more pepper. I add fresh sliced carrots, fresh mushroom (usually cremini), and frozen peas usually around the 15 to 20 min mark of the simmering process. Then add a bit more broth and tomato sauce as i go. Delicious!!
I normally don’t like chili but I wanted some today. I made the recipe just as called for including the cayenne for some heat. Delicious! Bookmarked the page and will make again.
Turned out great! will definitely try this again.
My husband and I really like this recipe. We like to put chopped onions, sour cream and shredded cheddar on top. I ended up using too much diced tomatoes and sauce. But it still tasted great. I added an extra can of kidney beans and left off the cayenne pepper, since we both have acid reflux. I like the salt taste, my daughter is used to kosher or sea salt and they are not as strong. I suggest using those if the salt bothers you. Great recipe, thanks!!
This chili is the perfect classic chili. I add fresh garlic. The flavor is amazing. I make it often during this cold Midwest winter. Hearty and delicious.
Can I use 2 cans of tomato sauce instead of diced tomatoes?
First time making chili and this recipe was perfect!! My family loved it!!
Can this be made in a crockpot? If so what would the instructions be?
What is meant by tomato sauce? Marinara?
This recipe is great!! Best chili I;ve had in years
Nice and ez tastes great!
i used bone broth and marinara sauce and black beans because it was what I had in the pantry .
Delicious and quick! I would def recommend this recipe!
It truly is the best chili recipe I have tried! Great job!!!
Very good recipe and so easy. I only put in half the cumin called for in the recipe – definitely need to do that or cumin will be overpowering to some.
Also, I have a family of five. I increased the serving size from 6 to 9 and we still did not have enough for five meals. Next time I will increase serving size to 12 and we’ll have enough.
Otherwise, great job and thank you.
Easy, delicious recipe. Best chili recipe I have found. I didn’t add the cayenne pepper. Highly recommend.
Excellent and Simple Recipe which yields amazing results. I substituted the can of diced tomatoes with a can of Rotel. and also added a half can of white/yellow corn. just personal preference. Served it over some fresh backed corn bread and man did it hit the spot. Thank you
I didn’t have tomato paste; instead I used chopped fresh tomatoes and marinara sauce. It tastes awesome.
Best Chili I ever made! Everyone Loved it and had seconds!
Great flavor. I’m not a huge fan of cumin but I didn’t think it was overpowering. Only thing is the recipe for 1 lb says it serves 6…it really serves like 3-4 if you are eating this as your whole entree (at least in my family).
I love this Chilli, fixed it for the first time.
My family raves about this chili! I have been cooking for 43 years and this without a doubt the best I’ve ever made. I just added some cut up steamed baby carrots to tone down the acid. Thanks for sharing this delightful recipe❤️
Amazing!!! It is an easy, no fuss recipe. I substituted the chilli powder for mild chilli powder as have an 11yr old who’s just starting to explore with spice. It’s got depth and flavour without being spicy hot. You still get the warmth and comfort, which is exactly what you want from a good chilli. Definitely will be making again using this from now on.
Thank you for sharing.
I bumped up the spices as well, including cumin which we love, and it was definitely worth the 5 star rating! Making it again now & finishing it off in the slow cooker as did another reviewer. Best chili recipe I’ve ever made. Next time I’ll have cornbread with it.
This was really good and easy. I omitted the cumin because we aren’t fans. This is such an easy recipe with very good results. Thank you!
I followed this recipe last night at my girlfriend’s house. It was super simple to prepare. My girlfriend and I were amazed at how good it was. I will Definitely try it again soon!
A coworker of mine made this and it was fantastic!!! I will be making this for my friends and family!
Great recipe! Easy to follow and easy to make. Delicious!
This is definitely the best chili ever !!! My 17 year old actually asks me to make it at least a couple times a month. She is so hard to please since u never know from one time to the next she hates whatever I make. I’m sure everyone knows what teenagers are like. My husband asks me to make a double batch. Needless to say I give this recipe 5 stars !!
The Best Chili ever! I love chili. Followed the recipe on the most part but I added minced garlic. My husband loved it also. He usually not a great fan of my Chili, but this one changed his mind.
I’m a total amateur – – – Amanda make me look like a pro!!
I cut back on the Chili Pepper to 2 T
I added a Yellow and Red Pepper
I added some chopped Celery
I even phoned a friend about subbing Chicken stock for beef stock. (Which I did)
I got RAVE REVIEWS from my wife!!
Yes!!!
Maybe I should stick closer to what AMANDA recommends but why argue with success?
Too much cumin!!
I’d suggest using only 1 tbs of cumin. Other than that turned out delicious.
Best chili. Pinch of cayenne only.
I tried this did double of everything to make more. But I only added 1 table spoon of cumin for the entire thing. Overall it tastes pretty good.
nice simple but tasty meal for a cold winter night here in Maine.
This chili is perfect.
Made this tonight, first time making homemade chili. I just don’t like any of the stuff that’s already canned. Are used half ground beef and half little chunks of steak.Followed the recipe except I didn’t have any beef broth and learned something very useful: 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce to a cup of water.
A huge fan of tomatoes in soups, and I was afraid three different types of tomato additions would be way too much. But the flavor was outstanding. One of the best chili I’ve ever had. And surprisingly I have enough left for a couple more meals.
Wish I could simply edit my comment after it’s posted but that’s not possible here, so I’ll just make the corrections in this reply. It should’ve said I am NOT a fan of tomatoes in soups. With all that tomato this somehow tasted incredible!
Great consistency! I doubled the cayenne and pepper. Too much cumin for my tastes. Next time I plan to cut it in half. Otherwise, it was great!
This is now my go to Chili recipe. I never have left overs on chili night. Thank you for the recipe.
Loved the recipe! It was my first time making this dish ever and let me tell you it was a SUCCESS. All the flavoring combineded so well. I’m keeping this one for the books lol. My son whose 10 rated this a 10/10 whoohoo!!!. Thank you
Excellent! Easy to prepare, all ingredients that I had on-hand, and even the kiddos liked it. I, too, skipped the cayenne. We substituted a can of diced tomatoes with green chiles, added a bit more broth (just our taste), and used turkey for a leaner option. Glad to have found this and will use it again!
Due to haters of spice, I left out the cayenne. Best non-spicy chili I have ever had. 5-stars!
Excellent chili! I have always made crappy chili until I found this recipe! Everyone compliments my chili now! I do agree with other comments, I only used 1 TBLS of surgar which seemed just right to me! Overall though, this is an EXCELLENT recipe! Thank you for sharing!
We use ground turkey in my home for an even healthier addition, but we absolutely love this recipe!
I’ve been looking for the right chilli recipe for awhile. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Only thing I did different was added chili beans and pork n beans with the kidney beans. Absolutely delicious!
I followed the recipe exactly, and we thought it was delicious.
Simply delicious and so easy. Everyone loved and had seconds.
Perfectly seasoned and well balanced. Highly recommend this one. It’s especially great with corn bread.
It really is a great recipe! I use this recipe as my base now and make adaptations as I want, like adding peppers, mushrooms, etc, or not adding beans, but it’s great every time. I think what I’ve been previously missing in my chili was the cumin. Thanks so much!
I was never a chili fan; until now! I’ve made this recipe three times now, and every time I’m so impressed with it! I crave it all the time!
First time making chili and I ended up eating three bowls >_< Definitely going into the recipe book. I followed suit on the cummin, did half. Thank you so much!
This was delicious- very rich in flavor, quite spicey with the cayenne. I think I’d add more meat next time, maybe a half pound more.
Love this recipe! But I used fresh ground chicken breast from Rastelli Specialty store and little celery and fresh diced carrots and sweet corn. It is delicious!!!!! Will make it again. Thank you so much for the great recipe
I think this recipe is AWESOME! The depth of flavor makes this a very unique recipe. I have made a lot of beef and bean chilis, and my husband and I think this is the best we’ve ever had. I used beef with some fat, so I drained it before adding the other ingredients. I also used WAY less sugar. I used about a tablespoon, and I think next time I will use even less, and may use brown sugar instead. I loved how flavorful this chili is, and like all chili, gets better the next day!
Thank you very much for sharing this recipe. ♥ It is delicious ♥. The only change I made was the cumin. I added only 1 tablespoon.
Can you make this with already cooked brisket instead of ground beef?
Best chili is right. Everything is perfect. This is so easy and tastes amazing. Not too watery just perfect.
Literally the best and most simple recipe
I cut the cumin to 1 tsp cause my hubby is picky
Also skipped chili for a couple taps of smoked paprika
Only 1 tsp if sugar and I honestly could go for 1/2 the amount
And 2 cans of kidney beans instead of 1. You can add 3 if you wanna stretch it even more. 1 is simply not enough and leaves it a bit on the soupier side
I also added a little extra salt in the form of seasoning salt
And added some fresh chopped garlic to the recipe
I served it in a bunt of cornbread
Topped with shredded cheese, sour cream, chives
So delicious, even my picky mother wants to take some to work for her lunch
This recipe was extremely tasty. I used chicken broth and ground turkey but still awesome!
Absolutely love this recipe. The only thing I have cut back on is the sugar, but only by 1/2 tbsp. Instead of beef broth, I use chicken stock, and use either chicken or turkey. I also use 2 cans of kidney beans. Very flavorful!
Cut the cumin in half and it will taste much better
This was AMAZING and yes AMAZING in all caps lol . Never made chili but glad I could use this recipe and forever wil!!!
Half chipolte chili powder and half adobe chili powder and yes to the cayenne, SMOKIN!
Meant ancho chili powder
Excellent recipe. Added 1 chopped bell pepper because I happen to have one
I’ve actually won a couple of small chili cook-off competitions, but this might be the best chili I have made I tweaked it a little bit.
I only used one and a half tablespoons of cumin and I added an extra teaspoon of salt.
I used 85% lean hamburger and cooked it a little longer to reduce it down.
Oh, and I used a very sweet onion, called sweet onion LOL.
Great!
Flawless chili. Not too spicy…not bland. A crowd pleaser!
Turned out great! My husband is more into chili than i am because the only chili i like is at Wendys! I know most of you just gasped! Haha. But he says that it is a little sweet & then the spice kicks in. I like spice more than he does,so it worked out well for me. In my opinion its 10x better the next day. Thank you!
Very good! Compliments to the chef!
Made this last night, family LOVED it! Flavors are strong but that’s how we like it. I used 1/2 of required beef, but added 2 more cans of beans, used Swerve instead of sugar, and made a tapioca starch slurry since we like thick chili. Delicious basic recipe that you can tweak easily, yet maintain the goodness of the original. This is our favorite chili now! Thanks for sharing.
Easy and Fast! Perfect to warm you up on a cold day😁. I added a chopped green pepper because I like them in chili. Otherwise, I followed recipe.
I loved this! Will definitely be my go to chili recipe!
I have made the chili three times since I found the recipe. The first time I made it it was a bit sweet. So I cut back sugar to
One tbsp instead of two. Was perfect. I
plan on making it again this weekend. It’s a fav now.
Fantastic!
This IS the best chili I’ve ever made. I used Beyond Meat and omitted the sugar. BEST CHILI EVER!
Made this twice already and even added dark and light red beans
Very good. Very easy. Everyone has different taste when it comes to spice. Next time, I plan on using less cumin.
The only thing i did was substitute the diced tomatoes for 3 cans of rotel with chilis and cut the cumin in half, I doubled the recipe and omitted the cayenne pepper it was spicey enough. This was the best recipe.
My absolute go to recipe. I use a little less sugar and cumin. The older comments noted adding a couple of splashes of balsamic and it’s an absolute game changer.
very good recipe. We like our chili spicy so I used the cumin, ref pepper flakes and substituted the red kidney beans with a can of chili beans.
I used only 1 Tbs cumin and chilli powder, added 1 Tbs red dirt seasoning, ketchup instead of tomato paste and 1 Tbs water plus 2 tsp corn starch because we used it for chillidogs. It was very good .
I have several different chili recipes that I make depending on either how I plan on serving it or sometimes based on the ingredients I have on hand. All of my chili versions are tasty. But tonight I tried this recipe and I must say hands down this is the best chili ever! My entire family raved about it. This is definitely my go to chili recipe from now on.
This is so amazing. By far my favorite chili recipe!!
Absoutely delicious recipe. I doubled it for a large batch but put in about half, maybe less, of the sugar requirement. It was outstanding – I definitely hurt myself with how much of it I ate. Spooned it over a handful of Fritos and topped with shredded cheddar (& my fiancé and his parents put some sour cream.) It was a huge hit, thanks for sharing!
Only 1 word needed….Delicious!!!! Thank you so much for this amazing chili recipe!
I made this chili right by the recipe and it is the best chili I have eaten. Will definitely cook this again and I give it 5 stars.
I alrrdded more tomato sauce. It cut the cumin.
Can you advise how much 1/6 is??? Is that a cup? 2 cups?? 3/4 cup??? That is always a bit more helpful in determining serving sizes.
I’ve struggled with making really good chili so I settled for packets. That still wasn’t so great so I rarely ever make any because I never had a great recipe until now. This is so good!!!!! (I can taste the sugar more than I’d like to so I’ll reduce the next time). Other than this, this recipe is definitely a keeper.
This is soooooo good. The only thing I did different was add 11/2 teaspoons of smoked paprika. The best chili recipe I’ve ever tried!
Delicious…especially with sweet, yellow cornbread!
I love this recipe! I eliminate the cumin and only do 1 tablespoon of sugar, even though it doesn’t really need it. I add diced tomatoes with green chilies. My family loves it. So flavorful
Great and a nice easy recipe. I didn’t change too much other than cutting back on the cumin as noted by others.
Will definitely be making this again. Thank you.
Made with 2 lbs beef bc that’s what I had at the house, after reading the comments I did just a little less cumin more like 1.5 tbsp, used beef bone broth for a little more protein, used mild chili pinto beans since I used more beef, bc I didn’t want to try to measure out more chili seasoning. Came out as the best pot of chili I’ve ever made. Thanks for the great recipe.
My first try at homemade chili and my family loves it. Can’t wait to make it again
Omitted the sugar, used a 15oz can of tomato sauce, used about 2 1/2 cups of broth, very tasty
We all loved this recipe. My son said he doesn’t usually like chili cuz it’s just beans and peppers. This was more like a sloppy Joe texture with a delicious flavor! It’s a keeper.
Fantastic!!! I made this as written and it is phenomenal! I do agree with the cumin comments; a tad too much for my liking.. But it was seriously still so good!!! And! Here’s the winning addition to this recipe… My 8 year old liked it! Win, win, win!!!
My family could not stop saying how good the chili was.
I had to improvise with 2 of the ingredients and then I thought I was opened beef broth but it was chicken, so I did one of each. Allowed to simmer for 30minutes on low.
What was suppose to be for New Years want last.
My daughter told me to make it more often
My husband and I LOVE this recipe. We make it just as described. It is snowing for the first time in our city today in too long and I was so eager to make this chili and some cornbread on a cold, snowy day. Thank you!
The flavor was amazing! Making it for for New Year’s Day so I decided to make it a day ahead. With chile, if I have the time, I like to put it together with everything but the beans and simmer for a couple hours. (2-3hours) This allows the flavors to really come together and the meat and tomatoes get nice and tender. Add the beans and cook for an additional 30 minutes.
Overall Rating from Husband
too much sugar – too sweet
too much tomato
I did not add all the cumin as many people said it was overpowering
In our Chili Recipe we always add Jalapeños and some juice to give it a little kick so this did help the chili.
My husband is our Chili cook in the family and he did add a little more chili powder and cumin to what was already in there to get rid of the Tomato taste.
Now the day after chili is always better so I really can’t wait to see how it tastes.
Next time I will cut back on the sugar and half the tomato sauce and add a little more beef broth just to see what that does but over all I think it was good. Will try again.
For the most part, followed recipe, but cut back on all the spices, can always add more. Added 2 stalks of chopped celery and a chopped/seeded red pepper. Cut beef broth in 1/2, balance 1/2 can of beer. Adds flavor and alcohol burns off. Not a fan of low fat ground beef, used 80/20, better flavor. No salt, no pepper, no cayenne. Add when serving if you want bite.
Pre taste? Superb….Top with shredded Mexican cheese, sour cream and chopped green onions. Will whip up my cornbread tomorrow.
The best chili, I use chicken stock instead of beef broth, Don’t shoot the messenger, everyone loved it, kept the cumin as the recipe calls for, and the sugar, used diced Italian stewed tomatoes, just a personal preference. Excellent, I’ve tried the other 2 “best chilis” that pop up first when searching for best chilis and yours is the best hands down. I also use 2 lbs. of meat, Coarse grind, So I just double all the ingredients.
I made this chili yesterday, I did use ground venison in place of beef, but kept to the rest of the recipe. This is a wonderful recipe for chili. Thank you
This is the BEST chili! I’ve made it a dozen times or more and the two changes that make it perfect are to reduce the cumin to 1.5 Tbsp. and the sugar to 1 Tbsp. Easy, fast, absolutely delicious chili every time – I love it!!
Followed recipe exactly with the exception of using half the cumin per other reviews. Turned out delicious and will be a go-to from now on! Perfect balance of sweet and savory. Bravo!
Really good basic recipe for a quickie chili, but not my favorite. Has anyone tried it without the tomato paste and sugar? I’ve made a fair amount of chili in my time, and feel like the paste is overkill and the sugar only necessary because of the paste…
How big of a pot did you use? Would 4qt be too small. Is 6qt okay? Or 10qt?
Instead of utilizing a variety of spices, I am wondering if I bought a “chili packet” of spices if that would be acceptable?
The best chili I’ve ever made. I used 2 lbs of ground beef as that is what my packages come as. I didn’t think it was too salty. I actually added more salt than the recipe stated. I also cooked my beans in the instant pot first. Will definitely make again.
Did you double all of the other ingredients since you used 2 lbs of beef?
I think the recipe overall is good, but way too much sugar! After tasting, I was searching online how to compensate for the sweetness. After a couple of additions, it turned out ok. If I make again, will try 1/2 tsp sugar.
If you think it’s too sweet omit the white sugar and add 1.5 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/2 Tspn. dry mustard. 1/2 Tspn. garlic powder, and mix with 1/4 cup ketchup and 2 tblspns. white vinegar.
Consider substituting Brown Sugar for that called for in the recipe.
You could have peeled a russet potato and just boiled it in the chili for a while. It soaks up the salt and then should be fine.
I agree too much sugar for chili. I will make it again great flavor otherwise just too sweet for me.
You do not have to add sugar. I never do in recipies unless it’s desert. The tomatoes definitely have enough natural sugar in them to start out with, as the majority of vegetables already have a natural sweetness. I normally buy organic, and that might be the difference. I know the non organic produce taste quite different, somehow the flavor just doesn’t come through like it should, in my opinion. So when the flavor is off, I guess people add sugar, but I think it always changes the flavor for the worse. If someone thinks something sweet is necessary, honey or maple syrup are much better options! I never added sugar to any of my Italian food and everyone loves my food. I am quite certain that Italians never intended for sugar to be added to their recipies.
Agree 100%. Way too sweet. Next time I’ll only use 1 T.
I just made this recipe and I agree way too much sugar. Next time I will do a pinch.
This is a great recipe! I do agree with another maker of this about the Cumin. In my opinion, I would back down the cumin but it is really good chili. I paired this with cornbread(mix) and it goes really well together
Excellent recipe! After reading some of the other reviews I cut the Cumin by 1/2. Seemed to be the perfect amount. I’ll definitely make this recipe often over the winter. Thank you!
We skipped the traditional Xmas meal and decided to do chili. The measurements spot on and the taste is great!
Fantastic. I like cumin but not too much of it so I cut back on the cumin a little and it was absolutely perfect for me.
Award Winning!!
I absolutely love this chili, I make it on the stove and then put it on low in the crockpot for hours. I recently hosted a chili cook off and this recipe won first place!!!!
When I cook it for just myself I double the cayenne pepper, I love it spicy!
Try chopping a chipotle in adobo if you like spice. These add a nice sweet smoky heat.
Did you use all the ingredients listed or make any changes.
I did the recipe exactly as it was called for, but I used 93% fat reduced ground Turkey. It tasted fabulous!!
Topped it off with some avocado, shredded cheese, and a dollop of sour cream. I served it with some cornbread.
Huge hit with my family!!
Can I add beer to this recipe?
you can do whatever you want to a recipe, they are only a guide, make it your own!
Baking, however, is a different story.
Go for it!
Prohibition ended a long time ago! A nice dark Mexican Ale might work or to your taste.
Caution: Any beer added must be approved by the cook via taste test!
I just made some and substituted beer for the beef broth and it turned out awesome!
You absolutely can, I add a few cans of of Texas red or amber in and it tastes awesome
That being said it significantly increases cook time as you have to boil down a bit
Hell yeah. I did and a lil moonshine. Used 1/2 tblsp ginger powder
I did. Subbed in a bunch of freshly roasted tomatoes instead of the trio of the sauce, diced tomatoes and paste and it was great. It’s chili! You can’t mess it up if you’re tasting as you go. Add corn! Go nuts!
I added guinness to the recipe and it was fantastic
I used 1.5 cups of beer and beef “better than bouillon”. Perfection!!
I’ve made this chili several times, but with a few additions: hot honey, unsweetened chocolate, and apple cider vinegar. I also simmer it for at least an hour to let the flavors develop.
I add one bottle of dark beer halfway through the summer. Nice finish.
I do, one can. I tend to go a just a touch heavy on all the listed spices and use 12oz tomato paste instead of the 8 listed.
I did tonight, it was a good substitute instead of beef broth. 🙂
I’d use something like a can of Foster’s
Great recipe! I bumped up all the spices a bit, and just substituted “Trader Joe’s Beef-less Ground Beef” for the meat in your recipe, since we are vegetarian. But all in all an easy yummy recipe.
What do you use instead of beef broth, veggie broth?
We use meatless as well. Plus I cut up butternut squash in our. It adds that extra flavor you didn’t realize it was missing.
Best chili ever. I’ve never been a fan of chili until now. Everyone who has tried it says it’s the best ever too. To reduce the sodium in this recipe significantly I used 1 tsp of low sodium Lawry’s season salt, no salt tomato sauce and diced tomatoes, and I cooked my kidney beans in the instant pot. The kidney beans also have a better taste than can beans. My husband is on a very limited salt diet. Besides, never saw anyone adding salt to my chili. Thank you for this great recipe!!
Are you saying you didn’t use tomatoes sauce or diced tomatoes
Did the same as above. Except added the spices except black pepper to onions when they were almost done cooking. Adding spices with aromatics really boosts the flavor. Also I subbed maple syrup for the white sugar. It was yummy!!
Wow! What a great idea. I’m going to cook the kidney beans in the chili, too!
Did you use extra liquids? If not, was it a dry chili?
The consistency was really good, but the flavor was off. I think it had too much cumin. What could I do to cut the strong cumin flavor? I tried more sugar and chili powder, but that didn’t help.
BTW I give it a solid 4 stars. Would be 5 if the flavor was a bit better.
lol what are u talking about? this was my first time cooking chili and it was absolutely delicious!! my friends loved it too was a super big hit! im using it again for future cooking 🙂
Hmmmm, I followed it to a T, and it tasted normal. Yum!
I added dices of bacon to the ground beef, then let it boil for 25 mins.
Aroma ; tangy flovors. Savory
Maybe add less cumin? Just a thought…
They’re asking what they can do to cut the flavor now that it’s already been added. In cooking, there are certain flavors/seasonings you can add to minimize other flavors.
This is the first chili I’ve ever made. My husband just taste tested it, and he went crazy! He’s THE expert in chili! I on the other hand am no expert on chili, nor cooking! I am also not a fan of chili… however, now I must admit, I love it! Haha, waiting for the cornbread. Might to too full from all of the “taste” testing!
Yeah 2 Tbsp is a butt load of cumin. Maybe they meant 2 tsp?
Add more tomato sauce or diced tomatoes to dilute the cumin. I only used 1-1/2 tablespoons of cumin and less sugar
I cut back the cumin, to 1 tablespoon at the most 1 table And 1/4 teaspoon
You need bellpepper, a little oregano, bay leaf , red chili flakes, and I do all my chopped seasoning till translucent then add freshly chopped garlic for 2 minutes then I throw the ground beef in etc I am a chef in New Orleans!
Cumin has a veryyyy strong flavor. I always use like a 1/3 of what is on the recipes.
Great recipe. I use brown sugar instead of regular sugar. It did seem to have a little too much cumin for taste buds here but I used another couple tablespoons of light brown sugar and it seemed to remedy that. Overall really good!
I always add a package or two of toco packets they sell in the store. They have all the flavor you’ll need. If you want it hot hot just add red pepper flakes.
Great chili
Purchase a different chili powder. Some brands load up on the cumin, others don’t have any at all.
I just made this and I was thinking the same thing. It seems like the cumin is a little over powering.
Same here! Next time I’m doing 1tsp. Way too much cumin flavor
I added 1 tbs of cumin and 1tbs of coriander. I also subbed the sugar for honey. Phenomenal!
I made it too. it was awesome. but next time ill cut back on cumin too. maybe 1 tabl spoon instead of 2. hubby loved it just like it was.
Throw a peeled raw potato in that should help bring the HEAT DOWN
Add a bit of cinnamon to dull the cumin flavor. An 1/8 of a cup of yogurt can also round out the flavor.
Way way way too much cumin in this recipe. Put in like 1/4th
I actually cut all the spices in half for the recipe because I think it’s way too much and then it comes out perfect
I agree..cut the cumin down at least by half.
Try using half the amount of cumin, or less. I found the amount in the recipe too over powering for my taste.
I only had about 2 teaspoons of cumin, so that’s what I used. It was great! I think that 2 tablespoons is too much. 🙂
I might add more beans and see how that helps
Good recipe, skip the sugar though, really screws up the taste.
As with any recipe, I get online I made this as recommended. It was fantastic. I then set about making it “My own.” I don’t really like kidney beans so that I changed immediately (I used black beans (frijoles negros, I used dry beans that I reconstituted from dry.) Along with the onion I used red bell pepper, some baby Bella mushrooms (16oz. sliced), and 12 ounces of rice. These just helped me make the base recipe my own. (Note: When serving the chili I added some chopped jalapenos for extra heat.
So silly, but can you double this?
Of course! Just be sure to double all ingredients and use a large enough pot. I would recommend watching it closer though, because sometimes big batches can tend to stick to the bottom of the pot. Stir more frequently and you should be good to go!
Of course! I just made this with 2 lbs and doubled all ingredients. Next time I’ll probably use a little less sugar, but it’s delicious! I also read a couple comments and used less cumin but it’s your taste.
This is the best chili recipe I’ve tried so far! So simple and flavorful. I also loved the consistency of this one. It was not too thick and chunky but rather on the thinner and lighter side. I think next time I may add some black beans. I also subbed the ground beef with ground turkey, and it was amazing! I actually prefer turkey over beef in chili.
I LOVED this recipe, but my husband did not care for the sweetness. I used a can of ranch style beans since that’s what I had. It’s now printed out & hanging on my fridge. Goodbye to the chili packets I always buy. Thank you for sharing this
I’ve made this about five times and I absolutely love it. I sub about have the chili powder for chipotle chili powder for a bit more kick. It’s fantastic
First of all, this is the first time I have ever added a comment to a recipe. I made this last night. And as my husband says, this was the best chili he ever ate! I was a little skeptical about the amount of seasonings, but stuck with the recipe and it was so flavorful. Sugar is a key ingredient which I had never used in chili. It’s funny because we use sugar in our pasta sauce. Used ground venison, so hardly any fat.
I did add diced celery and diced green pepper. Did not add the cayenne. What I like is that you can vary the type of beans used, red kidney beans, black beans. I used butter beans in my recipe but usually use kidney. I would give this 10 stars!!!
Best red chili recipe ever . Thank you for sharing
I’ve been making chili for almost 30 years ( not a tradition where I was born)
This recipe is a keeper!
Simple, easy and fast! The only change I made was to use fresh garlic ( had a few heads, needed to use it before they go bad, don’t cook much anymore) Delicious! Loved it!
I used ground turkey and it was fabulous. I have gestational diabetes, so I left out the sugar. My blood sugar was normal and it tasted great! Keeper for sure.
All of my family enjoyed this recipe! It’s our favorite chilli recipe we have tried this far. I have 5 children and some of them are very picky eaters and they all had seconds! The flavour was phenomenal and it will definately be added into our rotation. Thanks so much!
Made as written – minus the optional cayenne. Full of flavor, perfect consistency, hearty, and filling! Even without the cayenne, there was a kick in the after taste, but nothing overwhelming and it didn’t bother the kids (or me, who is a baby with spicy foods). I will cut the cumin a bit next time, per other reviews, but made as instructed to properly review. Prep was simple with ingredients that are pantry staples, and cook time was quick enough for busy nights. This was a winner in my home and I’ll be adding this to our meal rotation! Thank you for sharing this yummy recipe!
Fantastic recipe! Love it ❤️ My 8 yr old even goes back for seconds and thirds!
If I could give this more than 5*, believe me, Id do in a Heartbeat!!!!! I cant make Chili to save my life and this recipe has changed that for me. This turned out even better than its been said. My Husband is in love with it and wants this to be my go to for Chili now on. Thank you. I have never liked eating Ground Beef ever and this is something even I enjoyed.
I loved this recipe’s flavor! I’ve added some frozen corn and lima beans to make space in my freezer, and the taste was not affected. Easy to make, too!
Thanks for the great recipe. I have it bookmarked and we make it about once per month, especially in the winter. I like it because the sugar makes it a little more appealing to my kids. However, I use have the amount of auger that is called for. Also I usually cut the garlic down too because of the kids. My wife like extra beans and tomatoes so sometimes I double those and to compensate I double the spices too. Very tasty and thanks.
made a few changes, NOT because i didn’t want to follow recipe as written but rather too lazy to go to store – big can of crushed tom (instead of tom + sauce); chix stock in lieu of beef; and, i tossed in 1.5 of sirloin (because i had it). also used baby red beans instead of kidney. SO YUMMY, and totally flexible to substitution based on pantry availability. should serve to sate the teens for a day or two ..
not to be dramatic but this is the best chili recipe I’ve ever made.
I have searched for 20 years for the perfect chili recipe and I have finally found it. My family loves it. Everyone that try’s it asks for the recipe. The only thing I change is I use crushed tomatoes instead of diced because my family likes that better
Great recipe. Agree about cutting the cumin in half. I like to add beer and Mesa to it, as well.
Fabulous recipe! I added baking cocoa and a tablespoon of espresso just for that mole experience, but on it’s own, it’s still delicious!
Loved this chili. Cut way down on cumin as husband isn’t a fan but the flavor is needed. Left out the sugar as tomato paste is sweet enough for us. Used my home canned tomatoes 1 quart. Taste excellent and quick to make.
Let me just say…I followed the recipe to the tea!!! The best chili ever! I made some cornbread to go with it! My fiancé loved it!
This was such a great and easy recipe!! It was a big hit with my family. Thank you!!
I made for a group I belong to any everyone loved it
A great recipe to have as the go-to chili recipe. Easy to make and delicious too. Definitely a repeater recipe in our house. Added a 2nd can of beans.
Loved this recipe, but next time I will not use the sugar. 2 TBSP is a lot — it does give a sweetness to the recipe. I paused when adding it, but I’m a firm believer in trying a recipe as it’s written the first time. If you do not like a sweet sauce, just eliminate.
I made the recipe exactly as written (without the cayenne pepper) and I really enjoyed it, however, it did seem a little heavy on the cumin. I will probably cut out a 1/2 tablespoon next time.
if I want to do 2 lbs of hamburger do I double all the other ingredients too?
I just made this for the first time and made a double batch. My only suggestion would be to use a little less cumin. I found it a little overwhelming, but the recipe is delish nonetheless!
I make this all the time with variations, everyone loves it. Things that I add:
* Bacon, pan-fried and using the grease
* 1 cup wine or beer
* Honey instead of sugar
Made it tonight and liked it. Will drain the fat off the meat next time and add extra cayenne. Anyone ever tried Pepper Jack Cheese with this? Over all I say five stars
This is very good, I left the cayenne out
I used Smoked Paprika by accident
Excellent recipe! Closest to my Mom’s and brings back wonderful memories! Easy to make and to double if needed. Left out cayenne pepper in case I will share with neighbor!
Love the recipe! I did tweak it a bit though. I think there was a bit too much cumin, so I added only half. I also added some brown sugar and sweet corn to the chili. Also tried adding in some breakfast sausage and it adds more flavor.
Best Chili ever! My family loved it! I followed the recipe but I just put less cumin in it and I tripled the ingredients because I have a big family. I will for sure be making this again in the near future ❤️
tastes great, next time I would leave out the sugar and double the amounts recipe as hard to find 15 oz cans of diced tomatoes and 8 oz cans of tomato sauce.
Great recipe, wife told me this time was better than the last time I made it. Last time I substituted tomatoes with Ro-Tel mild, this time I used regular Rotel along with mild and omitted the sugar.
Thank you I finally followed a recipe it’s delicious
This recipe is delicious. I cooked it last weekend and we enjoyed it so much that I’m making a double batch this weekend. That way I can have some to freeze and some to share.
I did a little adjusting and came up with the best chili I have ever made.👍
Followed recipe other then used
Rotel Diced tomatoes
No cayenne
No sugar
Delish with cornbread.
I never leave comments but this one deserves it. Absolutely delicious.
This is a five-star chilli recipe. My family loved it. Best chilli I have tasted in forever.
This is what chili should taste like. Just made it this afternoon. I like cumin, so that amount was fine. Added some cremini mushrooms and a small chopped green pepper as well as a tsp of caoco powder with the cumin. Threw in a rind of parmigiano for extra oomph. A sprinkle of msg elevated it to a whole new level !
Grated some 9 year old cheddar on top of a dollop of sour cream….ecstacy
Can you substitute brown sugar for the white sugar the recipe calls for?
Sounds yummy! Can you give us your honey cornbread recipe?? I appreciate it!
Krusteaz makes an excellent one,use 1/3 cup of butter instead of the oil, it’s delicious!
Thank you so much! I made this for our company and it felt so great to get so many compliments. Only thing I did was tossed in a dash of wine since I added too much cumin. It helped! I had sour cream, extra chopped onions, scallions, and shredded cheese available for toppings.
Good chili recipe. Very sweet with the sugar.
It is the best chili I have ever had. I followed the recipe exactly, including all spices. Absolutely perfect.
Thank you so much for this recipe, my husband loves it!! It’s so easy and quick. I have a family of 6 so I use 2 lbs of meat and 2 cans of beans so it can fill up everyone. I also use ground turkey instead of beef and it still comes out amazing.
This is excellent chili, even better the next day! It was just what I was looking for! Thank you!
So so good, thank you, my husband and I loved it!
I dont usually use a recipe to make chili, i just throw the ingredients together. For some reason I decided to try your recipe and im glad I did! I must admit i was hesitant to use the called-for amount of cumin and chili powder but Im glad i stuck to the recipe, it turned out super flavorful! I did use fresh garlic (cooked it in with my onion first) and I love cumin so i was okay with the amount but i get why people might want to add less.
I used the cayenne and did not find the chili to be really spicy. I will probably add some Franks hot sauce to mine when serving. Also, i always use one can of dark red and one can of light red kidney beans in my chili so i did that here. It doesnt change the flavor.
Thanks for a great spice mix and spice ratio for chili! I will follow your recipe again.
Easy and absolutely delish!!!! I added a red bell pepper and a jalapeño too!!
So yummy
This recipe is awesome! I’m vegan, so I tweaked it by using 1 and 3/4 teaspoon of Better Than Bouillon vegetable base with 1 1/2 cup of water instead of the beef stock (the bouillon is more flavorful than regular veggie stock). And I also used Beyond Meat sausage and 1 link of Kroger’s vegan chorizo, and 1 tablespoon of sugar instead of 2. Perfection! I love cumin, so I thought 2 tablespoons was perfect, but to each his/her own.
Great recipe! The only thing I changed was the cumin..reduced it to 1.5 tsp
Very tasty!!!
Great recipe. I really enjoyed it. One small suggestion: add the paste when you add the broth, tomatoes, tomato sauce and beans. The liquid really helps to break up the paste much more efficiently.
I love this recipe. Classic good ol’ chili. And I love that I had everything on hand except onion so I just through some onion powder in as I was cooking the meat. I substituted ground beef for ground turkey. No need to drain ground turkey. Instead of beef broth I used chicken bullion and because I love beans I even through in a can of pinto and a can of black. Made it a 3 beans chili and it turned out amazing!!
This is the best chili recipe ever! We’re from Florida and I never ate much soup or chili, I suppose since it never gets cold for long. My daughter randomly asked me to make chili a couple months ago and I thought that was weird since I didn’t know she liked it and it was hot out. So glad I found this recipe! We’ve made it a couple times a month since!! I add garlic to the onions but other than that do everything else the same. Thank you for sharing your recipe, I’m a chili fan now!!
This chili recipe knocks it out of the park! I’ve been using the same recipe for many years and was looking for something new and wow did I find it😁 This recipe did not disappoint. I didn’t change a thing all the measurements are perfect 🙌🏻 My only regret is I didn’t double it😉 I served this with warm baguette and it will definitely be on repeat over here!!
I made recipe exactly as written, not changing any amounts on the ingredients. What I did do was added a little chopped green bell pepper, and a small can of corn, drained. Everyone loved it! It has become MY chili recipe, and I’ve made it many times.
Quick, easy, tasty. I added a bit of smoked paprika because I like a smoky chili. I used the full 2tbsp of cumin and I think it’s just perfect that way. Wouldn’t have wanted less.
I just made this recipe on a cold, rainy day. I used a slow cooker on low for about 6 hoirs. It was wonderful. I am definitely saving this recipe for the next pot of chili.
I added 1/2 tsp spicy chili powder that was from an Indian market. It added a bit of underlying heat.
I made this for a neighborhood porch crawl and everyone loved it! Left out the cayenne and provided hot sauce with the condiments. Making it again for guests this week. A simple and delicious recipe! Appreciate the recipe multiplier, saved me some work.
I don’t ever leave reviews after cooking a recipe. But I HAD to after making & eating this because this is truly the BEST chili recipe ever!! It’s the perfect thickness and has so much flavor!!So good! Thank you
So dang good! I’m miserably full from eating too much! Best chili I’ve made! Thank you! 😁
I am not used to sugar in the recipe, and I added a little garlic salt to counterbalance that, but even before it’s had a chance to simmer it still taste really really good! Thanks for the great recipe! Oh, I also used red instead of kidney beans! We’ll see what the Hubs says: he likes that nasty chili in a can, though, so if he DOES like it that’s another plus! (But I think he will once he’s dropped sliced jalapeños & crumbled saltines on it LOL! 🤢
This recipe is very similar to one my late sister used as her standby and my favorite. It was simply called “Chili Con Carne”. After making your uncomplicated (simple is best) recipe today—I loved this perfect configuration of flavors, textures. I’m a big convert! A welcome addition to the COWBOYS/CHIEFS game this afternoon! Go Cowboys!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING!
I am 75 living in a 42 foot fifth wheel in Daytona Beach before that I was living in Scottsdale but my daughter wanted me to be closer to her so I moved to Daytona. I am from Northern Michigan and this is the best recipe for someone who eats chili at least once a month.Thank you very very much for this recipe
I think this is a great, simple recipe for a comforting pot of chili this fall/winter. As for the grease debate, I always drain ground beef, not matter the percentage. I did that before I had gallbladder disease, and I triple make sure to do it now that I live without a gallbladder. When too much grease gets in my food, I usually don’t get further than 3 bites. It’s just something to consider for your health.
Its a hit!
Yes, this is the best chili recipe. I was so surprised to see how much cumin was listed, but I used precisely stated and so glad I did—saving this one for sure.
This my second time making this chili recipe. We absolutely loved it the first time with the addition of chipotle, which kicked up the flavour and heat a bit. It was so good. This is my go-to recipe from now on.
A little too sweet, add the sugar next time. Added a red pepper and served with rice, a salad vegetable salsa and fresh bread. Very good
Loved the recipe, Did not have much grease, with 90% meat
First time making chilli and this recipe is so easy! AND it tastes soooooo good!!!!! I didn’t know that stirring the spice mix with the ground beef would bring out stronger aroma. LOVE the smell of it!!! Lowered the cumin powder & sugar as they are not my favorite. Other than that, it smells and tastes exactly like the ones I miss! Will definitely make it again 🙂 THANK YOU!!!!
I make chili quite a bit in cold weather but my problem is it never turns out the same twice because I don’t use a recipe so I thought I’d try to find a recipe so I could be more consistent. This one was great just as it is. And I really hate to be one of those that adds the “except” phrase here but it was a very minor change, I wait to add the beans until close to the end of the cooking time so they don’t get mushy. That’s it, great recipe.
Excellent. Add an extra can of beans, otherwise made as written. We have made and eaten many a chili recipes over the years and this one is bookmarked! I made it for 5 men to take up on their elk hunt. HUGE hit. All the wives asked for the recipe.
Excellent recipe! The time and effort spent in trial and error testing paid off!
(Used ground turkey instead of beef)
This is the best chili recipe I’ve ever tried! No need to look any further. My husband loved it and said it was his favorite of all the recipes I’ve tried. Quick, easy and delicious! Thanks for a great recipe!
I really enjoyed this chili and making it was a breeze. I added a little more heat at the end just for me and… delicious! Thank you!
I make this recipe with plant-based “Beef” and veggie stock. Even my meat-lover boyfriend loves it!
OUTSTANDING!
I made it vegan style with meatless crumbles. I made the base first, then added the crumbles at the end.
The spices were perfect.
I have always been known for my good chili, but this recipe tops them all! I did make a few small changes, nothing that would affect the taste. I used half ground turkey, added a bit of chopped pepper and carrots, and per other recommendations cut back a little on the cumin (although I like LOTS of cumin), but will go full amount next time. As with so many recipes, thought the prep time was a little off, Need more than 5 minutes. I also needed a tad more paste to thicken it, and let it simmer for a couple of hours. Really thought the amount of sugar gave it a nice hint of sweetness. Can’t wait to serve at my next chili dinner in February (annual event)! A real 5-star winner!
Only issue I have is the beans. Where u come from, the moment you put beans in chili, it becomes a stew. Not allowed in my littletowns cook offs. I also add 1 habanero, 1 jalapeño, no sugar and extra cumin.
I couldn’t stop eating it from the pot while it was cooking! I used beef and venison. Turned out great.
Good basic chili but way too much cumin. I would drop it to about a teaspoon and add some pepper sauce.
Perfect flavor and heat with the cayenne pepper. Family loved it and they do not like “hot” chili. Will definitely make this again!
Great recipe! I sub the beef broth for a bottle of beer only because I’ve always done that and also I didn’t have beef broth in hand.
I have made this chili 2x now. I had to double the recipe both times for larger groups, the only change I made was that I use a can of crushed fire roasted tomatoes instead of sauce because i didnt have enough sauce on hand. It turned out amazing. Both times I made it, there was not a drop left and I got many compliments. My husband (whom is very particular about his chili) was dissapointed that there were no left overs for him to have the following week. Guess we will be making more.
Just made this chili and it was a hit with my family. Tweaked it by adding minced garlic, dry red wine, diced jalapeños.
The best recipe I have found!!
This is my second batch using recipe. In addition to beef, I add ground Lamb. My freezer gets stocked for those cold and hungry winter days.
Loved it, a big hit with my family! Doubled everything to make a bigger pot. Will use it again, and again. Thank you!
Made this today and we just loved it. Only difference was that I omitted 1 tbsp of sugar and 1 tbsp of chili powder. Also added 1/2 can of Mild Rotel.
Delicious! Recipe is a keeper.
Pretty good recipe. Next time, I’ll use 1/4-1/2 the sugar. Way too sweet for my taste, which kind of ruined it. I tried adding extra chili powder and cayenne to hide the sweet, but it didn’t really help.
Best I tasted
This is one of the best chili recipes I have ever made, it is my go to. Sometimes I drain the grease, sometimes I don’t, either way it is delicious. It is always gone.
Absolutely love this chili recipe. I am just wondering what 1/6 of the recipe would be for serving size? How would you measure that out? I track calories so I just want to know how much I can eat for the nutrition information for the Serving: 1/6th of the recipe | Calories: 334kcal
Just made this yesterday and it was delicious. Will definitely make this again and again.
Easy to make and great flavor
This is a delicious recipe as it is, but one can take it to the next level. Fire roast red and green and Chipotle peppers as well as roasting some fresh diced garlic, six cloves, in the olive oil. Put the garlic in first, and when it begins to brown and reaches the point of fragrance, add chili powder and cumin, then add the meat and onions. Sprinkle a dash of flour on that and brown. Then deglaze with a cup of red wine. Cook in the wine, scraping the delicious glutamates and other flavor compounds off the bottom and add the other ingredients. Don’t use tomato paste if you want the best flavors, just add forty or fifty ounces of fresh diced tomatoes, and simmer the resulting chili for three hours at a very low temperature. Bon appetit!
Best chili! Excellent recipe, you can definitely use this recipe alone or do add ons!
Surprised this chili has so much flavor given the little amount of ingredients. I was tempted to add more stuff, but I trusted the recipe as written. This rivals my husband’s complex, many ingredient, cook-all-day chili.
I added a packet of taco seasoning and 2 tbsp of white vinegar. Absolutely delicious!
This is the perfect recipe. I added chihuahua cheese and a dollop of sour cheese. It was simple, quick and delicious! Thank you.
Awesome Chili! I used 93% lean beef for a little less fat. I’m also a bit more spicy so I added red pepper flakes and doubled the cayenne pepper. The makes the perfect balance of sweetness. Will definitely add this to the regular list of cold weather meals!
I like the chili. Just a tad too much sugar for me. I will only use 1 tbsp. next time. I also, like celery in my chili so
I added that and it was delicious. I will make this my go to recipe for chili. I typically have all ingredients in pantry so its an easy mal to prepare.
Would this cook well in a crockpot?
Way too much cumin.
I loved this recipe…found it very tasty, I didn’t use the cayenne. The only thing is I would have liked it a little thicker…not sure what I did wrong, maybe cause I didn’t use tomato paste?
Supreme for such a simple recipe. Followed it to the T and it came out perfect!
Can I add extra beans to this recipe
Near Perfection! I wish I would’ve read the reviews first, definitely would have reduced the Cumin. Otberwise this was fantastic. The only change I made was adding some roasted corn. Delicious meal for the cold weather ahead.
This recipe is really solid – I cut the sugar and cumin in half. I drain the meat, skim it, and put it back, and add chicken bullion cube.
Excited to try this……any suggestions on making it in the crockpot?
Best part of chili you can tweak it anyway! Great recipe though and I have tried a lot of different recipes love different spins on stuff!! This is my husbands favorite and mine!
The chili was really easy and super delicious. The tomato paste gave it richness. I didn’t use cumin. I added some minced garlic. I highly recommend, sharp cheddar cheese, sour cream and some Fritos with some hot sauce. I definitely will be cooking this again.
My whole family loved this and it was easy to make!
I commented on this recipe a few weeks ago, but wanted to share that I changed it up a bit to make something a bit different. This time I used black beans & corn instead of the kidney beans and BOY was that chili GOOD!! Also it was very colorful and went perfectly with Fritos & cheese. This is my favorite recipe!!
I followed receipe exact! Beat chili I have ever made! Thank you for the receipe.
Delicious. I’ve been making chile a million years. I cut the sugar in half and used brown sugar (never added sugar before but it worked). Cut the cumin in half. Used dark beer instead of broth. Added two cans of beans because we like extra beans. And I added some chipotle powder. Served with cornbread. It was a big hit.
Can you double the meat and leave out the beans?
If you asked someone to take you to a restaurant that had the world’s best chili, and they took you to a place that served this recipe, you’d say “Yep! This is the best chili I’ve ever tasted!” It’s that good.
I substituted brown sugar for the white granulated sugar, and used 1 tablespoon of cumin and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, rather than 2 tablespoons of cumin.
I might add a half pound more beef and a half can more beans next time, but holy moly that’s great chili!
The best chili seasoning I have ever made my chili was the best made it last night for dinner it was raining outside and a tab bit cold inside that’s what made it better too with some sour cream and cheese use and on the bottom Michigan grill calf style chips
Made this last night and I’m making it again today. I live in Texas where chili is the state dish and this is AMAZING!!
Something else that’s good in chili as a topper is Extra Cheesy Cheezits
I made this recipe last night for dinner and my husband LOVED it. Based on other comments, I did cut the Cumin in half and next time I think I will add a larger/more onion. I topped the chili with cheese and served with honey cornbread and a glass of milk. It was wonderful and perfect for a chilly night!!
I cut the cumin by about 1/2, but added about 8 oz of beer for a little extra flavor. I am going to serve it with avocado, shredded cheese, chopped green onions, and sour cream for optional garnishes.
This recipe everyone could enjoy. It was very flavorful, yet not to much heat. We chose to stay away from the cayenne and provide hot sauce on the side. This will be my chili recipe from now on. Thanks!
Best Chili recipe ever! I used bison and a splash of balsalmic and 1 C of frozen roasted corn. To die for!
So easy but can make in a crockpot if you wish. Nothing but rave reviews!!
Has anyone tried this with fire roasted tomatoes? Those that love it, does it have a very very strong tomato flavor?
I used fired roasted tomatoes and blended them in food processor NC my fam doesn’t like chucnks. Lol. It was very good!!
As a matter of fact I’ve always made this recipe with fire roasted tomatoes bcs it was all I had on hand the first time I tried the recipe and it came out great!
I made mine with fire roasted tomatoes. It is solo good. Try it!
The only difference in fire roasted and regular canned tomatoes is that the fire roasted have a greater depth of flavor with the touch of smoke. I almost always substitute fire roasted when canned tomatoes are called for.
I used fire roasted tomatoes with green chilis! It was great!
I made chili for the very first time last night and I used your recipe , Amanda. My Family and I loved it so much. My Husband had the leftovers for breakfast this morning. This revipe is a keeper. Thank you Amanda.

Does anyone add pasta noodles?
Are you in the Cincinnati area? Pasta noodles are popular in Ohio and Indiana thanks to Skyline chili, but that tends to be a much thinner meat sauce if I remember correctly. Still, pasta noodles and convent shredded cheddar are amazing with it!
When I was a kid my mom would add macaroni noodles to her chili, kind of a goulash sort of thing but not actually goulash, it was pretty delicious as far as I remember though.💁
Yes…I added elbow noodles..I cooked them ,then added with 2 cups of pasta water…DELICIOUS!!
Our family LOVES eating chili over a big mound of spaghetti! 😋
I often serve leftovers over rotini pasta!
That’s an Ohio thing I believe.
Pasta is never in chili, however, i am sure serving it OVER pasta would be delicious 🙂 My husband likes his over rice. I like it as-is but I can see either one working. Its also good to put on top of a baked potato.
Yes! Pasta shells add a nice twist.
Ooh, so delicious! I followed directions and ingredients *except* I used 1 tablespoon of cumin instead of 2, as well as added the 1 tsp of balsamic vinegar after reading through some of the reviewers’ suggestions. Some times, chili is too runny or too thick, too bean-y, not flavorful enough–this chili of Amanda’s was splendid in every way; thank you for sharing! I feel lucky to have found this recipe and will absolutely make it again and again. My-must-haves with chili are grilled cheese sandwiches made with Master’s English muffin toasting bread, Hellman’s mayo on the outside, two slices of Kraft sharp American cheddar per sandwich along with a nice, cold glass of milk, yummy! 🙂
Definitely the best chili recipe ever! This is my go to recipe and a huge family favorite…..Thank you!
I’ve made this a few times I love it I added red pepper give it a little kick
I substituted a 1/2 t. of cinnamon for the cumin, large can of tomato juice and also added finely chopped celery leaves…for a winner
I forgot to rate it! It was great!
I just made this and really like it. I added less Cumin after reading the comments and it turned out perfect! Thanks
Delicious recipe. I tweaked some things. Added green bell pepper and fresh garlic. Also, used half of the amount of cumin and used Bush’s chili beans instead. Added a little onion powder too. So good and really quick
This is terrific! Finally have a goto chili that is delicious, easy, and quick. Thank you!!
Don’t usually comment on sites but I followed this recipe and made literally the most delicious Chili I’ve ever tasted.
Slight change was I used 1 can of chopped tomatoes instead of 1 can of sauce and 1 can of diced.
Me too RG, I used a couple of cans of Rotel instead of tomatoe sauce.
Best chili I’ve had in a longtime
Too much cumin. Other wise great.
No such thing! 😀 All of you send me your cumin: I’ll give it a good home!
I agree. Too much cumin. And I am a fan of cumin.
I agree, to much cumin.
I am not a fan of cumin. Next time I make it I am not adding cumin. Otherwise a really good chili. It has a chili con carne taste.
Very little or no cumin for me next time either! It was very overpowering!
Great recipe but I always put in a red pepper and green pepper diced.. give it a bit more colour.
I have only made chili one time before. I made this recipe for a chili cookoff (I omitted the onion and Cayenne). I won first place. I was so shocked. It was the first time I had made this recipe. Everyone loved it. Thanks for the winner recipe.
That’s is so AWESOME!!! Congrats! I’m making some of this tonight and also omitting onion bc I’m out. Hope my family likes it . …. we shall see.
I also won a chili cook off with this recipe! Yum! I used about half the cumin and chili powder. I think the beef broth adds a lot of flavor.
This is an excellent chili recipe. Everyone seems to be a fan. The only thing I would critique is that the recipe doesn’t say “pour off grease” after cooking the meat. I know most people would know that you do that, but some new cooks may not! This needs to be added I think!
Also, I tweak it a little; it’s an awful lot of tomato with the paste, diced tomatoes, and the tomato sauce. Although I triple the recipe, I just use two cans of diced tomatoes.
No need to drain the ‘grease’ after cooking the meat, the fat in it gives tons of flavour.
i agree with not having to drain the grease. it tastes great with or without.
I made this AWESOME recipe and did NOT drain grease. I live in greater Cincinnati area where our chili ” Norm” is Cincinnati Chili ( skyline). Very different spices and no onions/ tomatoes etc. One thing I prefer about Cincinnati Chili though that I do when making CLASSIC chili is the really fine small texture of the ground beef. To get this, I was taught to place the ground beef in about a cup of water then cook and break apart while it cooks not draining fat. I n this case I cooked onions as directed then added beef broth instant of water to cook ground beef then added rest of ingredients plus an extra can of diced tomatoes that had green chilies in it as well. It was awesome not to fatty. It didn’t even develop a fatty layer on top after refrigerating left over. Great recipe!!! 5 stars
I noticed this as well. I drain the grease because I couldn’t imagine it sitting in your stomach but make it feel sick. Otherwise I love this recipe it’s amazing normally last us 2 to 3 days.
Pretty good, however maybe a little too much cumin. I did about 1.5 of everything for a bigger batch…needs tweaked but not sure what to add…
I just made this and yummm. I didn’t had diced canned tomatoes, but had 2 very over ripe tomatoes and a jar of chunky salsa. I also used less garlic powder because I added fresh garlic instead.
but if you actually use 90% low fat beef as suggested, you won’t have enough grease for anything!
I never drain my meat .I use 90% lean and not draining adds to the flavor in my opinion.
Very true.I always use the better chuck.
I usually use 96% ground beef in all my cooking. I made this recipe before and loved it, I am making it again at my sister-in-laws request. She gave it rave reviews! The only thing that I would change is that I found it a tad too sweet so this time I am only going to use one tablespoon of sugar…..and yes I am going to use the 90% ground beef this time. Why? Because I think others are correct. It will add flavor! I’ll let you all know!
I totally agree!
I love the grease 😀
Yes I definitely did not know I was supposed to pour the grease lol ! This was my first time making chill however and it actually turned out really well I had to add a little corn starch, but I know that was because I didn’t dump the grease lol!
It’s actually up to you if you want to drain it or not. It’s obviously more healthy to drain it, but the grease adds lots of flavor. I personally drain but I’m also watching my waist lol. There’s nothing inherently wrong with not draining it though
The corn starch is way more damaging than the “grease”
The amount of beef fat in a pound of ground beef is negligible and is definitely where the flavour lives. Most of the liquid you’re draining off isn’t even fat at all… if you’re really concerned, make the chili, refrigerate it, then scoop the fat off the top.
Using 90% lean ground beef (as the recipe states) eliminates the need to drain any fat. Follow the recipe for optimal flavor. I use two cans of beans for a sturdier texture.
The type of ground meat I use doesn’t have grease left over.
Yes I agree. I didn’t drain the Grease and it did not come out good. Now I drain and comes out perfect!
I used the 93% lean beef and it was perfect!
I also added chopped mild banana peppers and minced garlic and chopped scallion whites. Perfecto
Tip : I know ppl love using ground beef but ground turkey makes a great substitute and there is a lot less grease . Also adding brown sugar takes away from the acidity of all the tomatoes . I use a small spoon of tomato paste . A small can of tomato sauce and 2 small diced tomatoes
I also DO NOT USE CUMIN
This recipe is fantastic!! I make it pretty much once every week and everyone loves it! Sometimes I’ll use turkey, or add bacon, or corn, spinach whatever you want! This is such a great universal chili recipe, I can’t recommend it enough!
I used fresh garlic and omitted the tomato sauce & paste using just diced tomatoes. Did add a small amount of the liquid from the beans. Flavor & texture were fine.
My regular chili recipe uses 4 lbs of cubed chuck and takes hours. I wanted something that was quick and easy, a small batch size and gave me chili coziness on this cold winter solstice night. This nailed it. I added chopped red bell pepper for color and texture, omitted the optional cayenne, but opted for a half can of chipotle in adobo for some heat and smokiness. It’s terrific! Will definitely make again.
This dish is absolutely delicious and my favorite! My definite go to chili recipe!
OMGOODNESS! I’ve never written a recipe review. This chili recipe, however, was so good and easy I thought I just had to chime in w/the other reviewers! My husband has made his version for yrs, which our family thought was pretty darned good. Somehow I stumbled on this particular recipe, though and after reading the exiting reviews thought I’d just try it. I’m delighted to tell you it’s become our “go-to” recipe. Excellent! Thank you!
Made this recipe and it was a hit!! Only extra ingredient I added was bell pepper. Chopped it up and added it to the onion and beef mixture before adding everything else. Oh and I also added pinto beans along with the kidney beans. This is my go to recipe for chili now!
Love it! Came out just perfet.
Simply delicious. I didn’t have beef broth, so I used vegetable broth. I followed the recipe exactly otherwise.
I used venison burger instead
Thank you so much for the recipe. It’s delicious.
The recipe was very easy to follow.
My grandson loved this he ate 5 bowls through out the evening
So easy, so good, and only one pot necessary
Easy to follow and delicious
Make this for our family get together the only think I did different when I doubled the recipe was instead of added 2 packages of ground beef I used a package of Italian hot sausage it was really good.
I am not great at cooking, but I decided to try the recipe and it came out perfectly. Super easy and hit the spot.
Very simple to make. I usually make my own version, but decided to try this out. It’s was surprisingly very good. I think I’ll use it from now on. My wife actually liked it better than mine. There is only 2 of us and it’s perfect for a couple of meals. The only thing I added for me was some diced onions and a little diced jalapeños on top. It was perfect if you like a little more spice than most
Very good
I have this recipe saved for good reason! Very tasty and it’s easy to tweak for taste.
Hey this recipe sounds great! Could I make it in the crockpot?
I just made this in the crock pot and it came out great 😊 just cook the ground meat and onion first then drain and add to all other ingredients in the pot. I put it on low for a couple hours or you can put it on high for an hour and it is delicious 😋
Best chili recipe I’ve ever made. I had all of the ingredients on hand. Threw in a 1/4 cup of frozen diced pepper. Left out the cayenne as I prefer less heat. Just enough for 2 person household. Thank you for sharing this.
I cook a great deal and this chili recipe is the BEST. I have never commented on a recipe until now, but because it was SO good, I felt I must say something. What surprised me most, was that I followed the recipe exactly and the seasoning proportions were perfect. Often, that is not the case. The only thing different is that I used my home-canned tomatoes instead of paste. I recommend this recipe to everyone and I am printing it off to keep in my recipe files.
I rarely we’ve comments about recipes! This was outstanding! 100% the best chili! I canal throughout all other chili recipes I finally found some thing I love! Thank you so much for creating this
I’m just been an ordinary cook but now I have the time to be a little more creative the chili turned out great family enjoyed it I liked the directions the pictures easy to follow indirect I don’t like improvising thank you
This recipe is great as is. I have made a couple adjustments to experiment and it also turned out great! For those who might like to try…
omit the sugar, I did a very small sprinkle of cayenne, add a dash of cinnamon (adds a “warmth” that I appreciate on cold days) , 1 can kidney beans, 1 can of pinto, 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar (my “secret ingredient” for chili!…adds a great depth of flavor). Served with tortilla chips. Enjoy and happy cooking!
I also added about a cup of water.
