Did you know that there are two very different types of blueberries? There are the regular cultivated blueberries that most of us are familiar with. And, there are wild blueberries.
Wild blueberries are smaller with a more intense sweet and tart flavor. They naturally grow wild in the barrens and fields of Maine and Eastern Canada. They contain twice the antioxidants of regular cultivated blueberries.
Over 99% of the wild blueberry crop is frozen and can be found in the freezer section of most grocery stores with the words “Wild Blueberries” on the package.
The natural sweet/tart flavors of wild blueberries and cherries are combined in this smoothie. It’s a little different because coconut water is used as the smoothie liquid. The coconut water adds naturally occurring electrolytes, minerals, and a nice subtle flavor. There are also chia seeds blended into this smoothie. The seeds act as a natural thickener and provide some omega-3 fats, fiber, and protein.
- 1 cup frozen pitted cherries
- 1 cup coconut water
- ½ cup frozen wild blueberries
- 1 tbsp. honey
- 2 tsp. chia seeds
- Place all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend until the fruit is smooth.
