The Best Classic Shepherd’s Pie – AKA Shepards Pie or Cottage Pie. Ground Beef (or lamb) with vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with cheesy mashed potatoes, and baked.

Classic Shepards Pie on a plate

Shepherd’s Pie

So, this is how you spell it:  Shepherd’s Pie.  But, from doing a quick google search, it came to my attention that TONS of people think it’s Shepards Pie.

Irish Shepherd’s Pie

Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie would actually call for ground lamb.  The difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie is the meat.  Cottage Pie uses ground beef, while Shepherd’s Pie uses ground lamb.

I called this recipe Shepherd’s Pie.  But, I wrote the recipe so that you could use ground beef or ground lamb.

I typically use ground beef because it is widely available.  But, for a special occasion, like St. Patricks day, I would use ground lamb.

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

(Note – The full printable recipe is at the bottom of this post)

Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Making the best Shepherd’s Pie is not difficult.  But, there are a few steps to it.  You have to make the meat mixture, the mashed potatoes, assemble the casserole, and bake it.

I find that the easiest way to make this dish is to work ahead.  You could make the beef or lamb mixture ahead of time.  Or, you could make the mashed potatoes ahead of time.

Piece of Shepards pie on a plate with layers of mashed potatoes and meat gravy with peas, carrots, onions, and corn

You could also make the whole recipe ahead of time.  Just assemble the casserole, cover the dish, and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it.  I find it is best to bake it within 3 days of preparing it.

When you are ready to bake it, take it out of the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before you need to bake it to let it start coming to room temperature.  Uncover it, and bake.

Ingredients

Meat Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 lb. 90% lean ground beef -or ground lamb
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves -minced
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup frozen mixed peas & carrots*
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels

Potato Topping:

  • 1 ½ - 2 lb. russet potatoes -about 2 large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter -1 stick
  • 1/3 cup half & half
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Instructions

Make the Meat Filling.

  • Add the oil to a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the onions. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef (or ground lamb) to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Add the parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and and pepper. Stir well. Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the flour and tomato paste. Stir until well incorporated and no clumps of tomato paste remain.
  • Add the broth, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen corn. Bring the liquid to a boil then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Set the meat mixture aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Make the potato topping.

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot. Cover the potatoes with water. Bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return the potatoes to the hot pot. Let the potatoes rest in the hot pot for 1 minute to evaporate any remaining liquid.
  • Add butter, half & half, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes and stir until all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Add the parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Stir until well combined.

Assemble the casserole.

  • Pour the meat mixture into a 9x9 (or 7x11) inch baking dish. Spread it out into an even layer. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat. Carefully spread into an even layer.
  • If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet so that the filling doesn’t bubble over into your oven. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.** Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

*If you can’t find frozen mixed peas and carrots, you could use ½ cup frozen peas and ½ cup frozen sliced carrots.
**Bake at 400° F.  Start preheating the oven after you make the meat mixture (listed in step 6).

This dish was good but not great. It lacked flavor so more spices & hamburger are needed. The potatoes were very high in calories because of the half and half, butter and parmesan cheese. I always say, if I’m going to eat something with high calories, it better be great. This was good but I would not say great. The next time I will add more spices and hamburger & make the potatoes with a healthier substitute for the butter.

Absolutely Delicious. Made it with frozen peas and carrots – added a can of drained corn. Then topped this with Cheese, bacon bits and chive before baking. Huge hit! The Worcestershire and sautéing the onions/garlic/meat was perfect. Highly Recommend

This shepard’s pie is amazing. I’ve made it twice now, my son loves it. I think I might try it with beef next time but this is my go to shepard’s pie recipe.

  4. 5 stars
Love this recipe. I have made it twice now and it is probably the best shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had. I like to use ground lamb and add extra carrot and peas. I also have been using chicken broth instead of beef broth.

  5. 5 stars
I have made shepherd’s pie many times. This recipe, ever so slightly tweaked, was by far the best we’ve had. I made a double batch for 4 of us and one of the my sons and my husband demolished it in 2 meals! They both begged me to make this a weekly staple. It was seriously delicious!

  6. 5 stars
This is excellent!! I did not have rosemary so I used poultry seasoning. It was EXCELLENT! Will make again soon and double. Leftovers were great too!

  7. 5 stars
Crowd pleaser! Simple and everyone loved it. Will be making again. Added an extra 2 potatoes though 🙂

  8. 5 stars
I followed the recipe, except I put half of the mashed potatoes on the bottom of the Casserole dish, then meat mixture, mashed potatoes and topped with cheese. It was so good. I will make this again.

  9. 5 stars
Fantastic recipe! I was looking for authentic Shepherds Pie, and this is it! I substituted a fresh carrot (diced very small) as I had none frozen, and used ground lamb as well as lamb bone broth (we make all our own broths). Excellent flavor, just like my Irish neighbor in Oxfordshire, England used to make for me when she was helping out my mom. Thanks for this!

  10. 5 stars
Really delicious meal! One thing I had to change about my pie was the amount of mashed potato topping. I used four potatoes instead of two, and I actually ended up needing two more. Will be making this again!

    1. 5 stars
Soo delicious! My husband and I give this a 5 star rating, even though I used packaged potato mix, and a healthy vegan margarine instead of butter and cheese. But the filling was so flavorful! (I also chopped a fresh carrot to replace the frozen, and it worked out fine.

    1. 5 stars
Done it four times for home and did in christmas vegetarian for my son its just a brilliant recipe all the family enjoyed it.

  11. 5 stars
absolutely delicious, well done to whoever made this recipe. I used strong cheddar instead of Parmesan

    1. 5 stars
I’m making it for the second time now, I’ve followed the recipe exactly, it’s delicious and smells amazing.

  12. 5 stars
Another great dish! This is my second time making it and it was just as good as the first. This will be added to my regular rotation 😊

  13. 5 stars
My mother in law is almost 80years old and a great chef. She says this was the best she ever had. I won. Saving the recipe.

    1. 3 stars
I absolutely loved everything about it except for the Thyme. I used 1/2 of what it called for and only one person in my family would eat it.

Next time, no thyme. Otherwise it is great.

  14. 5 stars
    My first time making this
Only thing I didn’t have was fresh herbs
I just cooked meat added everything and used instant mashed potatoes. Everyone liked it Mext time I want to add fresh mushroom yum

  15. 5 stars
Family loved it. Easy to make. I’ve made it using a pkg of instant potatoes and just as good

    1. 5 stars
I made this recipe and had to triple the ingredients cuz I had alot more mince meat to use! It turned out awesome!
Only thing that I did a little differently was I added a little sage and a little smoked Paprika but not alot! Everyone absolutely loved it!

  16. 5 stars
I’ve made this several times now…don’t change a thing! Everyone loves it!! Very easy to put together and makes A LOT!! Thanks so much for the recipe!!

  17. 5 stars
Simply delishious and quite easy to make! We have a household that doesn’t care for thyme, so used oregano instead, which worked very well!

My husband and I make Shepherd’s Pie together. He gets on browning the ground and I get on chopping onions and measuring everything else. This is our Go-To base Shepherd’s Pie recipe. We’ve made it at least ten times and it’s delicious, savory, comfort food every time. We use this seasoning blend and do little tweaks and variations to suit us. Tonight’s variation will be skin-on sweet potato mash instead of white potatoes, but we’ve also made it with ground turkey, Beyond Ground, bell peppers, spinach, mushrooms etc.. We love this recipe because It’s inexpensive, nutritious and one helluva way to elevate frozen peas & carrots. We can even fit this recipe into our Whole30 Nutrition Plan by simply eliminating the wheat flour. What’s not to love?

    1. 5 stars
I agree with Crystal. Sweet potato mash topping is a delicious counterpoint to the gaminess of the lamb!

    1. 5 stars
It’s absolutely amazing!!! I’ve made this recipe over and over again m. It always gets compliments when I get to share ❤️ Yummy!! Very easy to make 🤤

      1. 5 stars
Can’t recommend this recipe more! From 92 year old mother in law to young grandchildren, it is a hit. This recipe keeps my med school grandson coming back for visits. And it’s sooo easy. Everyone says best shepherds pie ever.

  19. 5 stars
I’ve been making Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage Pie for awhile and always have been told that I make them great, but this recipe is just perfect. I play around with some of the proportions (a bit more Worcestershire and beef broth, maybe a bit more garlic for the mashed potatoes), but I don’t stray far from anything you’ve laid out here. Thank you!

  20. 5 stars
It turned out great. Was easy to make and my husband loved it. Will definitely add to our meal plan. Thank you for sharing.

  21. 5 stars
best i have made. love the worshtershire and parm and tomato. The amount of flour for thickening was perfect. And the tase was amazing.

  22. 5 stars
Finally, a recipe that’s both easy and tasty without cream soup! For those dairy sensitive, this is the recipe. Easy to adjust to your tastes.

  23. 5 stars
This!!! It’s my go to recipe. I use to make shepherds pie but nothing like this. This recipe is comfort food and we all LOVE it! I gave my neighbour the recipe and she’s anxious to try it since she hears me raving about it. Thank you! I didn’t change a thing as it is delicious as is and hearty. I honestly have to STOP myself from eating the whole thing 🙂 I make this once every week as it is that yummy:)

Thank you for this amazing recipe!!

  24. 5 stars
I did 2lbs of ground beef bc I buy the cheap kind and added an extra half amount of every other ingredient and it came out perfectly. Delicious and a hit with the fam!

  25. I’ve always loved Shepherd’s pie since I was a kid, so this was great. Also, I have to make this in a few days for culinary day soooo…

  26. 5 stars
Just made this. Really really yummy and relatively easy. I used lamb. Husband ate half. Lol. Doubling would be a good idea! Thanks.

  27. 5 stars
Very tasty recipe! My husband loved it. Next time I will double it. The only change I made was using fat free milk instead of the cream. Definitely a keeper!

  28. My family and I love this recipe! It always turns out perfectly.

If I wanted to make this Gluten free for someone with Celiac’s, would there be a way to substitute or omit the flour?

  29. 5 stars
I had my own version of Shepherd’s Pie but THIS recipe will be my permanent version! The gravy that it makes is absolutely delicious! My husband loved this recipe. 🙂

  30. 5 stars
I made this yesterday with the lamb. This is hands-down the best Shepherd’s pie I’ve ever eaten. I will be making this routinely. Thanks!

  31. 5 stars
I’ve been searching for a good shepards pie recipe and I finally found it. Now I just need to burn some Irish peat in the fireplace to complete the experience

  32. 5 stars
I’ve made SP throughout the years. I decided tonight I wanted to try a different variation than my usual. I came across the recipe and decided to give it a try. We loved it! I thought I had dried rosemary on hand; I did not. A quick Google search gave me some suggestions (I went with Thyme). I will be using this receipt from now on!!!!

  33. 5 stars
Just outstanding. I use the entire 16 ounce package of frozen peas and carrots and double the corn. It uses all everyday ingredients. Leftovers are great, too. It takes longer than 20 minutes to prepare.

  34. 5 stars
This looks like an improvement on Shepherd’s pie recipes I’ve made in the past! Thanks!
Question: would it freeze well? I need to make a big casserole ahead and freeze it. I’m hoping it will freeze well. Thank you!

  35. 5 stars
Wow, this is the best Shepherd’s pie recipe I have ever tried. I grew up with my English mom’s recipe, but this is better. I didn’t have Worcestershire sauce on hand, so I used soy sauce. The flour and tomato paste really helped make the meat part rich and a nice texture. Divine.

  36. Can I make the meat portion and refrigerate over night, then add the potato portion when I’m ready the next day?

  37. 5 stars
This is the best recipe for shepherd’s pie. I had fresh herbs available so I substituted that. I also mixed the tomato paste and flour with a little of the broth to make a smooth paste before I mixed it into the meat mixture. t was YUMMY!!

  38. 5 stars
I used a mushroom plant based ground
    And it turned out fabulous!!
(Lion’s mane mushroom crumble.. sold at Superstore B.C, Canada).
This is definitely a keeper recipe 💕

  39. My mom made this for us as kids and it was really good, Mine was never as good as hers, I tried your recipe and my daughter’s boyfriend asked if I could move in with them and make it every night. They live in Rhode Island and I live in NY so I can’t deliver as often as he would like. Thanks so much. You are an amazing CHEF!

  40. 5 stars
I make this all the time and just wanted to add for anybody wanting to make this a little leaner- it is delicious with ground chicken or turkey (sub beef broth for chicken as well). I also too it with cheddar cheese before baking of course!

  41. I’d like to double this. Any adjustments or just double ingredients? Also, I’m using leftover short ribs. Suggestions? Will it affect the gravy process? Mahalo

  42. I’ve made this recipe numerous times now and I ALWAYS have to make a double portion because my husband and two teenage boys would devour it. KUDOS for sharing this and all my boys say THANK YOU!

  43. 5 stars
So delicious! The meat came out perfect. I added a layer of stuffing before I added the potatoes because my husband is addicted stuffing. He said it’s the beat shepherd’s pie he’s ever had.

  44. 5 stars
Wow had some leftover 60th Birthday dinner, prime rib, shrooms and mashed potatoes. This was freaking fabulous

  45. Made mine with ground elk that I got last season. Also added some wild sage and used fresh rosemary, basil and oregano. It was fast and simple and made enough for a few days of food. I skipped the potato prep and bought easy make parmigiana instant mashed potatoes, put in plastic bag and cut the tip to layer it nicely on top. 10/10

  46. This recipe was delicious. I doubled the recipe, omitted the flour and tomato paste and added a little more Worcestershire sauce. Also, I used fresh carrots and canned peas — no corn. Had it for Easter dinner along with fresh green beans, a tiny ham and pigs in the blanket.

  47. 5 stars
Outstanding! So delicious and not difficult to make at all. I prepared the mashed potatoes first then the meat mixture. Doubled the recipe and family just loved it!

  48. 5 stars
so good! first time making shepherd’s pie. & I am 60 !! used canned peas & corn. fresh carrots chopped & cooked. I loved the flavour. Would make it again! followed recipe …

  49. I made the lamb version today. Shepherd’s pie has always been a favorite of my son, but he super loved this recipe. Thanks for sharing!

  50. 5 stars
I used lamb and ground beef, with avocado oil and vegetable broth. Absolutely delicious, first time ever making this dish. My family loved it even the picky little ones.

  51. My Dad called this dish “delightful” at least 3 times. It was so good, we couldn’t stop eating. We finished a 8×8 tray between the two of us. Luckily, I took a portion of everything and put it into a bread pan to freeze for another day.

    Yum yum yum!!!

  52. 5 stars
I have a family of picky eaters and this recipe was a major hit! Most went up for seconds (those who had any room left)! I will definitely be putting this recipe on rotation:)

  53. I have been wanting good shepherd’s pie for a couple of months now and was excited to find this recipe. My mom made shepherd’s (cottage) pie when I was growing up but never really wrote down what she did. This recipe was great and my brother and I really liked it. Very similar to what we had growing up. I changed a handful of things due to preference or what I had in the kitchen. I realized last minute I was out of rosemary so I subbed for italian seasoning and sage. I used a sweet onion instead of yellow onion and subbed the half and half with heavy cream. I didn’t weigh my potatoes but I do know I had more than 2 lbs. I only peeled one potato and kept the skins on the other two. Also accidentally overfilled the garlic as I was measuring over the bowl, so there was extra garlic powder. You know when you tap-tap-tap to fill the measuring spoon then it all comes crashing out? It all worked out though since I did use more than enough potatoes. Lastly, baked in a 7×11 metal pan. One thing that I like about this dish is that it is a little bit foolproof and allows you to use up what’s in your kitchen. I remember sometimes my mom would use instant potatoes, sometimes covered in cheddar cheese, sometimes different veggies, varying typs of gravy and seasoning.

  54. 4 stars
I was confused with the recipe only stating 2 large potatoes. Seemed like more in the video. I stuck to recipe, cut back butter because thought 1 stick was a lot for only 2 potatoes. In hindsight, wish I had used more potatoes in order to have a thicker layer on top. First time making SP! Will make again!

  55. 5 stars
This is simply the best shepherd’s pie! We’re a plant-based family, so I use plant-based mince instead of beef, and replace the butter and cream with plant-based alternatives, but otherwise I stick to the recipe. I have made this so many times for guests, who are usually meat-eaters, and they all always go for seconds, saying how delicious it is. I have never come across a plant-based shepherd’s pie that is a winner, but with some personal preference adaptations, your recipe definitely is! I keep it close to hand, because I come back to it so regularly.
    Delicious!

  56. 5 stars
Excellent recipe. The herb mix and Worcestershire really complement the taste of the filling. I always seem to have left over rice from take out so I used 3/4 lb meat and added cooked rice to the filling with the liquid for a thickener instead of the flour. Also substitute milk and Greek yogurt for the cream in the potato topping. Thanks for sharing!

  57. 5 stars
I’ve made this several times for my family it’s a must at least twice a month!!! I make it with the beef and I double the recipe the pan that uses a 13 by 9 by 2.

  58. 5 stars
I’ve tried several version, and I thought this one was delicious! I felt it was an easier recipe, that really didn’t take as much time as I thought. I had to sub fresh carrots, that I slightly steamed, with a half of a can of peas.

  59. Recipe looks amazing. Got everything I needed to make it tonight now just realized I forgot the tomato paste. Is there a substitute?

  60. 5 stars
Served this recipe for a church covered dish. Loved by all. They took the leftovers home and washed my dish, lol.

  61. I needed a quick dinner. I followed this recipe except I used instant brown gravy instead of the tomato paste. I used fresh carrots only 3 small ones.
1/2 of a green pepper, 1 small onion and a can of creamed corn
Only garlic powder, no other spices.
I used instant mashed potatoes. I put cheddar cheese on Top of meat mixture and again on top of the mashed potatoes. Yum

  62. Absolutely delicious! This recipe has quickly become a staple in my home. I really enjoyed making it as well and it’s a pretty simple recipe if you’re used to cooking, even for beginners. Definitely double the recipe if you’re feeding more than 2 people. My boyfriend has a big appetite and I don’t think it would have been enough for the two of us if I didn’t double up.

  63. This is an easy recipe for Shepherds Pie. We loved it. I did substitute catsup for the tomato paste because I didn’t have any. It is flavorful and I will definitely make it again.

    1. Yes! I make this in a huge batch and I portion it out in single servings for my adult children because they love it so much. I don’t cook it in the oven, I leave that to the person eating it to do.

    2. Yep. For me, thawing for at least an hour before reheating works best. I reheat in the oven @400. I’ve never tried microwaving, but I bet it would be okay for small portions

  64. 5 stars
I absolutely love this recipe and so does my boyfriend I juts add a little more of Worcestershire sauce cause he loves it so much! make this recipe soo many times.

  65. 5 stars
Love the meat gravy recipe. I actually put it over baked potatoes (included sweet). Soooo yummy and healthier.

  66. 5 stars
Yummy. I used fresh carrots and they need a bit more cooking. So I added them before the frozen corn and peas. Also, I omitted the parmesan cheese from potatoes. It would have been good with cheddar too, I just got busy and forgot. Haha. Directions make it easy to follow

  67. This is my boyfriend’s favorite. A weekly request comes in for this recipe! So simple and easy, and amazing results every time! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  68. 5 stars
I made this today. It is so good. I made it on a charcoal grill the smokiness in the meat was awesome. Really enjoyed this recipe I’ll be making this recipe again and again.

  69. 5 stars
Growing up I HATED Shepherds pie. Now I think that was just because of how my mom made it. I used this recipe tonight and fell in love! I didn’t have any Worcestershire sauce but it didn’t REALLY need it to be good. I also used canned corn and peas instead of frozen and it was no issue. Super easy recipe with a delicious outcome. Will definitely be making this again in the future!

  70. Thanks for this recipe, I used Guinness for the liquid (added a tsp of better than bullion beef base)
    Scrumptious!

    1. 5 stars
I cannot agree more this recipe is exactly on I avoid making shepherd’s pie because the recipe is so convoluted this recipe is so easy. I have to say this is my first food review for a recipe and it’s 5 stars all the way.

  71. Great recipe! Instead of creamed potatoes I used Palmini Mashed which is mashed palm hearts. My first time eating Shepherd’s Pie and we loved it! Thank you!

  72. 5 stars
I tried this for the first time for St Patricks day. It was amazing. The best part was there were no flavors that were overpowering, they just all complimented each other perfectly! The meat mixture reminded me of the meat pies I had in Australia…SO GOOD!

  73. 5 stars
My husband refuses to eat corned beef or cabbage, so I made this for St. Patty’s Day. I’m glad I gave it a try. Absolutely delicious.

  74. 5 stars
This is an excellent Shepherd’s Pie recipe. Because my husband and I don’t like strong spice flavors, we halved the rosemary and thyme. I didn’t have frozen carrots, so I used fresh and precooked them a bit. In addition, I made the recipe a day ahead and refrigerated it until ready to bake, and it was delicious. This is a keeper and a great make-ahead dish for family or friends.

  75. Loved this recipe I substituted half the broth for Guinness beer and added a heavy beef bouillon spread as well. I used cheddar cheese instead of Parmesan… makes more sense to me being Irish myself lol. I loved this though and it came out great!! I also doubled the recipe and used heavy cream and sour cream for the mashed potato’s 🙂 happy saint patty’s day everyone!

  76. 5 stars
This was the best Shepherd’s Pie I have ever made. Absolutely delicious! Everyone wanted the recipe. Thanks for all the great tips. The flour and tomato paste are both what I think was always missing from mine. In the past, I was always wanting to add something. Loved it.

  77. Hello, I made this in mini crocks and it was amazing. I just finished making it in bulk. Recipe times 5. It filled three half trays. I’m just unsure how long to cook it tomorrow and at what temp. I see I should take it out of the frig to get close to room temp first. Any suggestions?

  78. 5 stars
The best shepherds pie I have ever made. I have made this recipe so many times, I get so many compliments. My family loves this. Thank you s9 much for sharing

  79. 5 stars
I followed this exactly except for I used ground chicken and chicken broth. It was easy and excellent! I appreciate the measurements for the vegetables, made it easier to create a mix when I did only had individual veggies. Family loved it for Pi day! Thank you.

This is by far one of the best recipes I have made in my 44 years on Earth! Haha. I never eat this cause it usually has big beef chunks or lamb. My boyfriend’s daughter is 6 and won’t eat anything. She gave it a thumbs up!! Will def be a regular here! Love it!

  81. 5 stars
Wow, this is so delicious. I made this from minced venison. Didn’t stay once, thanks for the recipe.

  82. This was so good. My family loved it. It takes a while to prep but is well worth it. I did change the cheese to Colby Jack as I was out of Parmesan, and used fresh Rosemary from my garden. Thank you so much for posting.

  83. 5 stars
This was my first time making Shepherds Pie and my whole family loved it! Definitely going to keep this in the dinner rotation.

  84. I found this recipe about a year ago, and I make it often – everyone loves it! I do a shortcut though for busy weeknights – I buy the pre-made mashed potatoes in the refrigerated section. My fussy family has no idea – they think the mashed potatoes are homemade – and they rave over this dish.

  85. 5 stars
I love this recipe. My way of helping those with sensitive gums, I put the dry herbs in a grinder and make them in powder, that way the dry herbs like rosemary or thyme does not get in between your teeth.
My family loves this dish. I also drained all the liquid fat from the cook ground lamb.

  86. 5 stars
This was the best shepherd’s pie we’ve ever eaten, but instead of putting half and half in potatoes, put hellmans mayonnaise instead.

  87. 5 stars
My mother an I made this with substitutes. Instead of lamb or beef, we used chicken. We boiled it and removed the bones. We didn’t use frozen vegetables; we used canned vegetables. We drained the cans and rinsed them with chicken broth. We used corn and sweet peas. We also cut some scallions and celery and added them to the peas and corn. Topped with mashed/creamed potatoes. Baked at 350 for 30 minutes. Be sure to put the dish on a cookie sheet in case it boils over. It was delicious and we will make this again and again.

  88. 5 stars
Super easy and delicious. I have made this twice. Doubled the recipe because it is so good. Great to make ahead and heat up later.

  89. We lower the carb content by using mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. If you add just a few potato flakes to the cauliflower, the taste and consistency is nearly identical to potatoes.

  90. 5 stars
I make this recipe often. It is easy to make, and taste delicious. I normally have the ingredients on hand as well.

  91. 5 stars
Love, love, LOVED this recipe! So easy and made my house smell sooooooo good. I doubled the recipe and thank goodness I did. My Son In Law and his friend ate over half of it! This is definately a keeper!!! Thank you for another great recipe Amanda!

      1. I just mad this and doubled it. I put it into two 9×13 aluminum baking pans from the dollar store. I think it could have fit doubled in a deep 9x 13 regular glass dish though . Also, I sprinkled some cheddar cheese on top of the potatoes before baking as well as adding the Parmesan cheese into the potatoes.

    1. 5 stars
We doubled the recipe too… perfect recipe for making ahead and giving to friends and family that are going through tough times!

  92. 5 stars
Great recipe but my potato topping was only a half inch thick and the picture made it look at least 2 inches thick.. Followed the directions per badem.

  93. 5 stars
Hands down the best! Perfect recipe! I did add a tablespoon of wine and did not use cheese. So very good!! Thank you!!!!

  94. 5 stars
I made this tonight…but doubled the Recipe. It was Amazing! My kids like a little bit of kick or spice to each meal. So I sprinkled Cayenne pepper over the first potato mixture and I had to add 3 more potatoes and butter , cheese etc on top because I needed more to cover the meat and veggies. The gravy was amazing! Thanks so much!

  95. Would it be okay to use yellow potatoes instead of russet potatoes?
Trying to avoid driving in the wintery weather to the grocery store haha.
    Thank you!!

  96. 5 stars
    Absolutely delicious
    Hearty and comforting
The ground beef was tasty and the mash potato had it’s own taste harmonizing each other
    No leftovers….
    Yummy

  97. 5 stars
This turned out amazing, everything was spot on only added a tiny bit of chilli powder to the mince for a kick but everything else was great. Went down a treat thank you!

  98. 5 stars
This was delicious. Didn’t have any tomato paste so used drained garlic and olive oil tomato bits and put them in the food processor and used the liquid with beef bouillon for the broth. A variation my mom would make when I was little was to use a taco seasoning packet with the meat portion and top with a jiffy cornbread mix or two and add cheddar cheese in top of that the last ten minutes of baking. Yum.

  99. Can i use fresh carrots and peas, and canned corn? all i have in the house right now.. should i blanch the carrots, before

  100. 5 stars
Delicious, I used ground turkey and chicken broth; still came out great and I have leftovers for lunch tomorrow!! Thank you!!!

  101. 5 stars
Recipe was great. If you want to use fresher veggies like asparagus, orange pepper, carrots, brussel sprouts, etc.. dice them into quarter inch pieces and add them after onions sauteed a minute, but before the meat.
    Then continue following recipe.
I didn’t put parmesan in mashed potatoes, but cooked and extra potato for a thicker mashed potatoes topper

  102. I am making this for families at church that have been going through some hardships. Can it be frozen? Also, I am planning to freeze in 2 serving increments – any suggestions on how long it would need to bake from frozen?

  103. 5 stars
Made it exactly as posted. Absolutely loved it!
I’ve been making sp for years this is even better than my dads. Next time and there will be a next time I’m adding mushrooms. Thanks for posting this recipe

  104. This was delicious!!! Just the kind of comfort food I was craving. Question: I have so much left over, can I freeze this? Not sure how the masked potatoes will do frozen?

  105. 5 stars
Such a great recipe! Added a bit more salt than what the recipe calls for after the meat/veggies were cooked (used low sodium beef broth so that might have been a factor) but otherwise followed the recipe to a T and it came out amazing. Will definitely be making this again!

  106. 5 stars
So flavorful/herby – I feel like I’m in the French countryside! I’ve made it twice with ground deer meat – it freezes well, too. Thank you for this!

  107. 5 stars
Excellent recipe. I doubled for 9×13 pan. Great flavor! I used a bit more beef stock in meat and about half the butter in the potatoes. Highly recommend making this.

  108. I’ve tried several Shepherd’s Pie recipes over the years and this one is, by far, the best! Hubs agrees. This is now my sole recipe for this dish, which has now graduated to the regular rotation. Thank you, Amanda, for sharing! Yum:)

  109. 5 stars
Really good recipe with a diverse number of ingredients to give it an amazing depth of flavor! A hit with my wife and kids, I’ll be making this recipe again and again for years to come!

  110. 5 stars
I made it just like the recipe and it was wonderful. and i’m the type of person who adds a little this and that. But I’ve found if you follow the recipe the first time, and it’s good, don’t mess it and tell the cook this…so I did. Thank you

  111. 5 stars
Made this and it was delicious! Great go to for a fast weeknight recipe! Uses all the staples that are in the house.

  112. So trying this recipe but thinking about making it in my large muffin pan for individual ‘pies’ that I can make and freeze.

  113. 5 stars
Yummm.. just made this and it came out so delicious. I had to make few subs because I didn’t have everything, but stuck to the quantities and flavour profile. The meat sauce came out creamy and flavourful, as did the potatoes. Will my super picky toddler eat this? Probably not haha. But that’s ok – more for me.

  114. 5 stars
I had no Worcestershire Sauce and used Bragg’s Liquid Aminos instead- but quadruple since it’s relatively weaker/waterier. Success!

  115. 5 stars
I didn’t find the prep time very accurate, even though I made the potatoes in advance it still took me 35 mins to make and assemble everything. I have made it twice in the past month great taste profile. Easy home cooked meal with mostly staple ingredents.

  116. 10/10 recommend!! This was amazing.

New tip: make upside down. Place potatoes on the bottom, veggies in the middle, and meat on top so the sauces seep into the layers below. Did this by chance (added to stored my leftover potatoes from a precious meal) but will do on purpose from now on!

  117. 5 stars
We are a picky group of 3. Dinner is a challenging meal. MIL doesn’t eat beef or pork, I will not eat mushrooms or olives and the hubby, well … it just depends. We used impossible burger and chicken broth and it was very good. I think next time I may add a small amount of red chili flakes, or not. Thank you for this recipe,

  118. 5 stars
I made this recipe exactly as written except o switched out 99% FF ground turkey breast for ground beef. So delicious! What I loved was the Parmesan cheese mixed into the potatoes. So scrumptious!

  119. 5 stars
Soo yummy! My grandmother always made Shepards pie when we were younger this definitely hit the spot and brought back some memories!

  120. 5 stars
I made this yesterday and gave some to my Irish dad. He loved it! I’ve made shepherds pie many times but found this by far to be the best. I’ll be making this again!

  121. 4 stars
This was my first crack at shepards pie and we loved it! Next time I will make more potatoes though. Prep time for me was no where near 20 minutes, however, the investment was worth it!

  122. 5 stars
Since my family is a vegetarian, I swapped out the ground beef with Impossible Meat. It was sooo good! My daughter and SIL said it was the best shepherds pie they have ever had.. and I tend to agree. Definitely a keeper recipe! Thanks!

  123. 5 stars
This recipe has become a staple in my household! I am currently dairy free, so I substitute oat milk for the half and half, and use dairy free butter and Parmesan. Even my toddler and husband who are not dairy free LOVE IT! I usually use lamb, but the grocery store was out of it so I subbed buffalo and that was another great alternative.

I did see a review about the potatoes taking a long time- I do always start the recipe with the potatoes, and cook everything else while the potatoes are coming to a boil/boiling. Then everything is ready to go into the oven at about the same time!

Thank you so much for this meal that will certainly be served at our table for many years to come!

  124. This is hands down the best cottage pie recipe! It’s actually cold down here in Miami right now and the warm yummy smell coming from the oven was amazing… and it tastes just as good!

  125. 5 stars
I’ve been craving a really delicious Shepherd’s Pie, but have never eaten what I considered a really good one in a restaurant. Time to make my own! I tweaked this one a little, as one does: I used fresh carrots cut into nice little cubes and added them to the onions after a few minutes. I cooked the tomato paste in there by itself for a minute to make it less raw tasting. I only added 1 Tblsp. of flour…2 would have made it too thick for my taste. And, very importantly, I added a squeeze of Sriracha (less than 1 Tblsp.). This mashed potato recipe looks good, but I used a stand-by that I knew I would love….it involves butter, cream cheese, sour cream, and green onions. Dotted with butter.
So so so good. Just me here, so I consumed it over the course of 4 days. Reheats in the microwave very well, especially in a little glazed pottery dish that holds its heat for a nice long time.
The ONLY thing I might change is to make it in an 8×8 pan so that the meat layer is thicker. I would not, then, use all the potatoes. I’d like the proportions to be more 2/3 meat, 1/3 potatoes, much as I love the latter.
Thank you so much for this recipe!

  126. 5 stars
This was SO good. I keep going back for more bites, which I never do. I added some mushrooms to the onions, just because I had some I needed to use. I didn’t have beef broth so I used chicken broth. And, because I’m lazy, I just used pre-made potatoes. But still – awesome!

  127. 5 stars
Difficult to put together–my first time making this. But it came together beautifully. I had to use instant potatoes and it was still great.

  128. 5 stars
great recipe but seriously, has ANYONE managed to do this with 2lbs (“two large potatoes”) of potatoes?
Just one tip… piping the mashed potatoes makes this a much easier recipe to execute 🙂

    Thanks for sharing this.
    Doug

  129. 5 stars
Wonderful! Followed recipe but did add 1/2 cup of mushrooms, 1/2 cup of red wine, a few more shakes of Worcestershire sauce, and a touch more salt to the meat mixture. After topping with the potatoes (used mixture of milk and sour cream instead of half and half) also spread some melted butter on top of the potatoes before placing the dish in the oven. It browned nicely on top and was yummy. Thanks for the recipe.

  130. 5 stars
Worthy making it again only thing I’d add on side is a salad next time will try w ground lamb this was delish received rave reviews 🙂

  131. 5 stars
Great easy recipe. So delicious! I didn’t have dried rosemary and subbed dried sage. I also didn’t have beef broth in the house and used chicken broth. Even with those subs it was wonderful.

  132. 5 stars
Made 4 of these at once for ourselves and friends in need and they tasted just like growing up at home on the farm in England! Delicious and plenty of flavor. Made them with mule deer meat ground up with beef fat and bacon. So we renamed ours to game pie or Montana pie. Thankyou so much for a great recipe!!!

  133. 5 stars
This was an excellent recipe! I added some mushrooms to the meat mixture and I used leftover mashed potatoes instead of making fresh. I also added a 1/4 cup of Parm to the top of the potatoes and drizzled them with 2 T melted butter. It was an excellent way to use leftover mashed potatoes.

  134. 5 stars
Delicious, but it did not hold up as it looks in the picture. I think I will use less broth for the next batch and double the potatoes.

  135. 5 stars
    Wonderful recipe, perfect for winter!
My husband wants me to make it for his snowmobile trip with buddies. If frozen, can this go straight in the oven, or would it need to be defrosted first?

  136. First time making Shepherd’s Pie and wow this recipe is easy and turned out fantastic! Very tasty. Definitely a keeper.

  137. 5 stars
    Very easy and delish
I cheated and used simply smart potatoes
Will defined make this dish again

  138. 5 stars
I made this last night using 1/3 lb lamb and a lb of ground beef. It was delicious! I’m not a big fan of lamb by itself, but mixing it with the ground beef gave just enough flavor to make this dish stand out! Also I omitted the Rosemary, since my husband can’t have it, and doubled the Thyme. Thank you for adding a new favorite to my list.

  139. 5 stars
Delish! I did all the cooking in my Braiser ~ while the Potatoes were boiling. Then I just layered on the Potatoes and baked the whole thing in the Oven. Super easy Super fast
    I Doubled the Recipe~ It was a Meal for 4 adults !
Using LAMB & YUKON GOLDs ~ All of your spices and seasonings were delicious~I didn’t change a thing !
We aren’t into alot of dairy so for the Potatoes ONLY used 1 butter stick for 8 large Yukon Golds ! That’s It ~ nothing else! Yukons whip up well and taste the best !

  140. 5 stars
I made a sirloin roast in the crockpot the night before for dinner… I used the leftovers (which tbh were kind of dry) in this recipe and it was one of the best things EVER…weirdly I had all the ingredients except frozen carrots on hand and it was pretty easy to throw together. My boyfriend ate half the pan for dinner. I am sending this recipe to everyone!

  141. 5 stars
We’ve made this twice, using our left over holiday mashed potatoes. YUM! Has everything you need in it. My 9 yr old boy even had seconds both times! My husband enjoyed it so much, he ate all the left overs!

  142. 5 stars
Easy recipe to follow. I love that it gives approximate times that each step should take for cooking. freezes well and tastes great! I have had demands to make it within a few days of the first time I made it! I have even added it to my meal prep sundays and split into smaller portions for when not everyone is home for a quick and easy meal that I can just toss in my toaster oven.

There are alot of components but for the most part, I had all ingredients on hand so don’t really need to take time to plan ahead.

I think the only part that I ‘tweaked’ was the potatoes as my family loves the potatoes and had to double that part of the recipe the 2nd time.

  143. 5 stars
Made this plenty of times and it never disappoints! Sheppards pie has been one of my favorites since I was a little kid and this recipe is by far the best one I’ve tried yet. I’ve followed it to a T and it’s turned out perfect but it was still just as great the times I’ve had to substitute a few ingredients. I have made it in the past by substituting half and half for 2% skim milk, using regular ground beef and draining it, and using canned vegetables rather than froze
n (they were a little mushy but still great flavor)! Thank you for this recipe, definitely deserves the 5 stars!

  144. 5 stars
The only thing I substituted was using sweet potato instead of white potato for the topping. This recipe was very good and it’s in my meal/menu rotation now

This recipe should be 10 stars a very delicious and filling meal and my family loves it. Next time I’ll make a bigger batch because there were hardly any leftovers

  145. 5 stars
It’s rare that a recipe actually lives up to the hype, but this one absolutely does. All I can say is “daaaamn Gina!”. So.freaking.good!!!!!

  146. 5 stars
What do you recommend for cooking if frozen? I’m assuming to freeze it before baking. Should I just extend the baking time? Cover with foil at first? Thanks!

  147. 5 stars
Wonderful dish 🙂 I’ve made about 3 times already 🤍 enjoyed this recipe with added green beans and chickpeas as well 🥲 and broiled cheese and/or breadcrumbs on top 🙂 thank you so much for sharing this excellent dish!!

  148. 5 stars
My first attempt at Shepherd’sPie and it was a rousing success! True, there are a few steps involved, but with the guidance of this well-written recipe, it is easy for any one to make this delicious dish. Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

  149. 5 stars
Used a mixture of ground beef and ground lamb and topped the mashed potatoes with some grated Romano cheese. Outstanding!

  150. 5 stars
This is the best I’ve tried and I’ve tried a bunch. I make it exactly to the recipe and nobody has ever not loved it. When somebody is trying it for the first time, I make sure to have a copy of the recipe printed out because I know they’re going to ask for it.

  151. 5 stars
Grew up thinking my Mom’s shepherds pie was the greatest. We both use this recipe now. It’s simple, and for anyone wondering, it is exceptional with ground venison.

  152. 4 stars
This recipe is easy and delicious 😋. Next time. I will probably not use a whole stick of butter as it made the mashed potatoes a little too wet for my taste. I’ll try 2/3 of a stick and see how it comes out. Other than that, phenomenal recipe.

  153. Best shepherds pie ever! I followed the recipe exactly except I used fresh herbs instead of dried. If you do, use 1 tablespoon fresh instead of 1 teaspoon dried. It was amazing!

  154. 5 stars
This is the best Shepards pie I have ever made and eaten, my family loves this.
It has become a family favourite. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe.💜💜💜

  155. Can I substitute olive oil for butter? And what non dairy product could replace the half and half! We keep a kosher home so cannot mix meat with dairy.

    1. I used non dairy butter and then saved some of the starchy water from boiling the potatoes – which was a pretty good non-dairy substitute for the half and half when making mashed potatoes.

    2. We are kosher also and I am going to try this with Impossible Beef so I can use the dairy ingredient. Otherwise, I have found oat milk to be a great pareve substitute. Instead of butter, I would use something like Smart Balance margarine.

    3. My SIL keep a kosher home and uses veggie crumble or she will use ground meat and oat milk or another dairy alternative for the half and half. She says the myokos dairy alternative butter is the best! Hope that helps. We don’t mix red meat and dairy, so I just always use ground turkey and follow the recipe.

    4. I just use some of the water the potatoes were boiled in until the potatoes are the consist I like. If you boil your potatoes in less water with salt it makes for a nice, flavorful and starchy substitute. I don’t ever use milk or 1/2 and 1/2 in my mash anymore.

    5. 5 stars
My daughter is allergic to dairy so we made a dairy free version of this and it was delicious! For the half and half I got a can of coconut cream unsweetened and mixed it with one can of rice milk. You can use your favorite non dairy milk just be sure it is unsweetened. The recipe only calls for 1/3 cup so I just put the rest in the fridge to use for something else. No one could even taste a hint of coconut. It was perfect.

    6. I also am making a Kosher version. i am going to make this tomorrow and plan to use “plant butter” i think it’s by Country Crock and non dairy and for the milk sub i always use Oatmilk in my mashed potatoes for a meat meal
( look for ine that says ” extra creamy!)

    7. Yes, you can absolutely sub the butter for oil… Also, if you need to use a dairy substitute you can go for almond milk or soy milk… You can also use a little bit of coconut milk (which is what I use)

  156. 5 stars
Excellent recipe!! So very easy to make and delicious flavor!! Used ground turkey because its what I had, needed to use up a container of fresh mushrooms and gave my potatoes some extra Half and half till I was satisfied with their consistency… Definitely putting this one in my fall/winter rotation!!

  157. 5 stars
I did not believe the 5.0 with 500 reviews. I followed the recipe exactly except I did refrigerate for 24 hour. I also used about 4 Oz of sour cream and less butter and and half and half. I think it would be good with 1/4 cup or so of chopped mushrooms. All that said, this is the best shepherd’s pie I have ever had.

  158. I’ve made this a while now, but forgot exactly how. Goggled and came across this gem. This is by far the best SP recipe I’ve tried. A staple in our home. And my 14 yr old loves it, so that’s a huge deal lol… thx for sharing!! Merry Christmas 🎄….

  159. 5 stars
I only added frozen peas to cooked Hamburg and about a teaspoon of herbs de Provence & 1/2 tsp garlic powder. I made a layer of buttered/salt & peppered mashed carrots & yellow turnips. I added shreddded cheddar jack to mashed potatoes for top layer. Oh my gosh! It is so good on a cold December night…

  160. 5 stars
Everyone loved it! I substituted a bag of frozen stir fry vegetables and also added a cup of shredded cheddar cheese to the potatoes.

Will definitely make this again on a winter night!

  161. I made this for dinner last night. Yummm! I used butter to sauté onions and garlic in a cast iron Dutch oven, then put them in the instant pot. Next I cut the chuck roast into four chunks and browned it in some olive oil in the same Dutch oven.

  162. Thank you for sharing-never done this before- added a few spices(adobo, sofrito, basil). My family loved it, my granddaughter asked for seconds.. Please keep up the good work

  163. I am working as DH here in HK and my boss love it!it’s just that it didn’t hold when we cut it became look like a stew 😬

    1. I think if you let it “rest” for 15 minutes, the mixture solidifies a bit and it won’t be stew-like.

    2. I have never cut a shepherd’s pie. I often make it in individual containers and we. eat right our of it or scoop it out, sop up gravy with biscuits. I use Yves ground round instead of beef. Delicious recipe!

  164. 5 stars
Just made this dish for my husband’s birthday with deer meat. It was a huge hit with the family. Thank you for sharing this lovely dish.

    1. 5 stars
The first time I made it with venison it was great but second time I added bacon fat with the venison during frying and it was even better!

  165. 5 stars
It was looking like alot of filling so I used a 9×12 pan to prevent over flow. If you do this make 2.5 lbs of potatoes for a thicker topping.

  166. 5 stars
I have been making Shepherd’s pies for a long time and I have tried several recipes that was consist of celery soup mushroom soup with along with cheddar cheese which is not good for us but this was very very good I follow the steps not in the same order you know but I did and it’s really really good
You guys have to try it

    1. I want to make this, but I have a question: for the Parmesan cheese, should that be shredded? Grated? Thanks!

  167. 5 stars
Wow! The most delicious Shepherd’s Pie I have ever made, thank you!

I didn’t have beef broth so I added some chopped up crimini mushrooms to the onion mixture. There’s plenty of water in the mushrooms so I didn’t need the broth, and it added a nice meaty flavor!

I also used half potatoes and half cauliflower for the topping. I just like the flavor and lighter texture.

This will definitely be a regular dish for me and my family from now on 🙂

  168. 5 stars
I grew up eating the most americanized version of shepherds pie which was basically mixing canned vegetable soup with ground beef, then topping with mashed potatoes. I loved it as a kid, but wanted to try something from scratch. I will never go back to the canned soup version, because this is amazing and my husband LOVES it. Currently writing it down so I will never forget it!

  169. 4 stars
This is one delicious shepherds pie good flavour quick to make love it will definetly make it again husband loved it too delicious I also grated some cheddar cheese on top too

  170. 5 stars
So flavorful and good! Not sure what the person who said it took far longer than stated meant. Im working from home today and I was able to put it together and get it baked and cooling in an hour. Wonderful recipe!

  171. This is a family favorite, I laugh because I don’t always make it the same wat twice:) I am not a lamb lover, so use ground beef. The recipe is a basic, sometimes I’ll saute mushrooms and roasted red peppers in with the onion and garlic. I use some thyme and other spices. I usually make it with peas and carrots and corn, if I don’t have any beef broth on hand, I usually have the cream of mushroom can I add-in. I will also smooth mashed potatoes along side the sides of the casserole dish, before adding the meat mixture, Then layer it with shredded cheddar, then top it off with the rest of the mashed potatoes, add some slithers of butter to top, sprinkle more cheese on top, and paprika. Sometimes use whatever cheese I have on hand, and also left over vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, even green beans. It’s always a winner, with a side of salad, and some crisp italian or french bread. It tastes even better the next day.

  172. 5 stars
Oh wow, this is the best Shepherd’s Pie I’ve ever had! The flavor is out of this world! It is hands down the best one pan dish I’ve ever eaten and it’s easy to make. I could eat half the pie in one sitting. Thank you for posting!

  173. 5 stars
I have made this three times. Once as Cottage pie and twice as Shepard’s pie. Both excellent with rave reviews. I always have fresh carrots on hand so I dice them and sauté with the onions. Frozen peas and corn are always on hand. I have used the Idahoan brand instant potatoes in lieu of fresh once in a pinch and it came out yummy as well. What a great way to get a nice variety of vegetables in my “meat mouth” husband too!

  174. 5 stars
Very delicious recipe. First time for this one and my husband stated that it’s a keeper. I did add a bit of Chicken in the Mug which added a bit more flavour as this just a personal preference. I would like to try this with fresh vegetables, maybe someday when I have more time. Thank you for sharing.

  175. 5 stars
My family requests this one-dish meal frequently! It’s not at all complicated, doesn’t take much time to prepare, the hardest part is waiting for it to come out of the oven!

  176. 5 stars
First time my husband has not put HPSauce on Sheppard Pie. He knew instantly that I tried a new recipe and suggested I print this recipe and only make it this way.

Excellent shepherd’s pie recipe. I enjoy testing out comfort food recipes, and this one impressed me. The flavors were savory and rich with every bite. The layering of ingredients while cooking and simmering the ground beef is what makes it stand out. I substituted veggie broth for beef broth and added a bit extra since the beef I used was 95% lean. Also, since I’m lactose intolerant, I used vegan products in place of dairy, and it was fine. If you want a little kick, add cayenne. But, this recipe really doesn’t need it.

This recipe is gorgeous, I added chives to the potatoes and swapped worcestshire for soy sauce as that was all I had. Sooo yummy now I know how to make a decent shepard’s pie.

I made this tonight. I used half the butter called for, chicken broth instead of beef, and sage instead of rosemary (all on account of just not having it). And I’m sitting on my couch writing this as the bowl is in my lap, and I’m just so in love with this recipe. I also broiled some cheddar on top of the potatoes. The worchestshire sauce really does it for the meat, don’t leave it out if you can help it!!!

I was a never a big fan of shepherd’s pie because every version I’ve had (usually at church potlucks) has been bland. But we had some leftover mashed potatoes and I thought this would be a fun dish for my 13-year old to make.

She shopped for all the ingredients, forgetting the broth and getting frozen peas instead of peas and carrots. So we used fresh carrots and we always have some better than bouillon in the fridge.

This was s-o-o-o delicious. I thought there would be plenty for leftovers but the lucky pooch got to lick an empty casserole pan.

    Thanks!

I made this tonight after reading all the great reviews. I also added 1/2 cup of red wine, mushrooms and wow this recipe did not disappoint!! So good, I will definitely be making it again!!

  182. I made this tonight with leftover mashed potatoes (just stirred Parmesan cheese) and leftover roast beef gravy instead of beef broth. Absolutely delicious, everyone loved it!! Thanks for a great recipe.

  183. 5 stars
Perfect every time. It has not become my one and only! Now I always double or even triple the recipe and make one for the freezer! Thank you for this! Whole fam LOVES IT!

  184. 5 stars
This recipe was delish. I’ve been making it for the past year, but I made a few small changes. I used fresh parsley, rosemary, and thyme for a stronger flavor. Also, total cooking time was 2.5 hours from start to finish!

  185. 5 stars
Wonderful recipe, I have made Shepard’s pie in the past, this is the winner! Great flavor, easy recipe. Helps if you have everything out & ready to go. I cooked the spuds & the meat at the same time, not in the same pot,
Then put it together. Exactly what one needs in the cold winter months! I like the idea of the commenter above making individual packets for her husband, very clever.

  186. 5 stars
Wow. This recipe was absolutely delicious!!!!!! Made it for my roommates and they both loved it. One of them is super picky and they raced about it. Thank you so much for a tasty recipe, will definitely be adding this to my rotation 🙂

  187. I’m German and I was introduced to Shepherd’s Pie during a gap year in Canada only a few years ago. I’ve made that dish a couple times with this recipe since, and served it to friends and family. Everyone loves it. Thank you so much for sharing!

  188. 5 stars
Everyone loved this pie! Even my picky 8 year old ate it after I convinced him to try it. I swapped out the beef broth for chicken broth because that’s what I had. Accidentally left out the rosemary too. Cooked and baked it in a large cast iron skillet. I highly recommend doing that. So delicious

Awesome recipe! My wife loves it, and I made it for her birthday dinner. It takes awhile to prep (chop the onion, peel the potato, etc), but it’s worth the effort. Nice weekend meal when you have time to properly prep.

  190. 5 stars
I wound up having too thin a layer of mashed potatoes so I did a saltine cracker crumbs soaked in butter. Yummy!

  191. 5 stars
Great winter recipe. Add about 30 to 45 min for the prep and precooked time… but we’ll worth the wait. Maybe it was just me but I’m usually a pretty good multitasker. Couldn’t find just frozen peas and carrots so I used a bag of frozen peas, carrots, corn and green beans. Thinking of adding a lil lima bean next time and maybe some sour cream in the potatoes.

  192. 5 stars
So easy and yummy. I did veggies a little different because we dont like peas. My husband has asked for a long time to make shepards pie. It was not hard at all

  193. 5 stars
Very good recipe. I use fresh herbs like the rosemary and thyme. Very good. I also put rosemary and oregano in the mashed potatoes. So delicious. You can use the packet of dry potatoes and it’s quicker. They say “just add water” but I use milk and butter and lots of herbs and seasoning. Taste so good and quick. I also use canned veggies not frozen. A lot quicker and better. Total time with cooking was about 1hr. It also made 2 casserole 9×13 dishes. I also used 2lbs ground beef.

  194. 5 stars
So creamy, savory, moist and wonderful! For some reason it takes me 3 hours but most cooking takes me way longer than normal people take. The only thing I do differently is sear the beef first to get a brown crust (I put little chunks in the hot pan) and then I deglaze the pan with some red wine. Otherwise I use this recipe everytime and it’s so delicious

  195. My mother-in-law and my husband loves it so much. It will be my second time making it today. Thanks for sharing this recipe🙏

  196. 5 stars
This is phenomenal! The spice mixture is perfect and creates something really delicious. I made just one modification to made it vegetarian (and added a couple splashes of my favorite Cabernet (Seven Moons)). I used one pound of beyond ground meat and 1 lb of sliced white mushrooms. I used 1.5x the spices, tomato paste, flour, and Worcestershire sauce (yes I know this has anchovies). The mushrooms cooked down considerably, so didn’t create so much mass the mashed potato couldn’t cover them.

  197. 5 stars
This is delicious! I’ve made a few times now and just substitute the ground beef with Beyond Beef ground. Perfect for a chilly evening by the ocean. Thank you for sharing!

  198. This is amazing! I had tried 1 other recipe last year and this is the best I have tried! It takes a bit of work to finish it but I actually did a double batch so I have a ton of reward for my effort! I omitted the flour and just added less broth to compensate and it turned out fine. I did not have cheese on hand and the food was so great I actually forgot about not having it! Husband and daughter loved it. Thanks for the recipe.

  199. 5 stars
Excellent seasoning in this!! The rosemary and thyme really compliment the beef. I like a lot of vegetables so I will add a few more the next time I make this.

  200. 5 stars
So delicious!! Third time I’ve made it in two weeks!! My recipe was ho hum but this one rocks! Thank you so much ❤️

  201. 5 stars
Perfect recipe. Right amount of seasoning compared to others that end up being too bland. Definitely a keeper.

  202. 5 stars
I made this tonight and my kids 5, 3, and 1 gobbled it up. We all loved it! Only problem was there wasn’t enough! Haha Making it again soon!

  203. I just made this, had ingredients on hand. I got home at 630, started at 640 and it has 10 minutes left in the oven and its 735 now. I didn’t feel it was time consuming at all.

  204. 5 stars
An outstanding Shepherd’s pie! I used frozen peas, frozen corn and fresh carrots (cut into 1/4 inch chunks). The fresh carrots have have excellent texture to bite into – not too hard, not to soft. Fresh grated parmesan takes this to the next level as well.

I have frozen this recipe as well and it is fabulous! If you are contemplating what type of gift to give to a person that has everything, consider making a batch, and freezing it into single serving foil packs. I made 6 of these packages for my contractor brother who called me each and every night that he cooked a package to thank and complement me again.

    Best gift ever given!

    1. Can I ask what you mean by foil packs? I wanted to make this and freeze single-serve portions but I was struggling with thinking of a good way to freeze it!

    2. I would like an invitation to your friend list. I apparently don’t have the right friends. If someone were to go through the effort of making this for me AND delivering it packaged? Well, they’d go straight to Best Friend for Life. All kidding aside, your friend are quite blessed.

    3. 5 stars
Amazing recipe! Incredibly easy to make. I’m able to make this dish from start to finish in 55 minutes. The best part about this dish is almost all ingredients are already in the pantry. If you don’t have one substitute for another. If you have everything ready and can cook sauce while potatoes are boiling your able to have both done at roughly the same time. Then their both already hot and reduces baking time. Easy peasy and 5 stars from me

    4. I am interested in freezing this recipe to bake later. Do you mind sharing how he cooked his? What do you recommend? Should I thaw it overnight in the fridge? Or should I just put it straight from freezer to oven for a longer time?

  205. I love this recipe but who are we kidding on time to make it. It takes at least 30 minutes to measure all ingredients out as a lot of ingredients plus shopping for the spices and frozen vegetables.
Another hour to get it together and then 30-40 minutes for potatoes. I have made numerous times and will
Continue to make but people should really not think this is a quick meal.

    1. But in reality, can’t some of these items be done at the same time? I start the potatoes to cook- then work on the filling at the same time so that the timing isn’t stacked one after the other- they overlap. I find this to be a relatively quick comfort meal for weeknights. As far as measuring ingredients…I guess that depends on how you keep and measure them- but this is very doable for a weeknight in our house. I guess your mileage may vary!

    2. I followed the recipe but cooked the potatoes while cooking the meat. Assembly and bake time were as directed. Wait time to serve was a little longer as I doubled the recipe in a 9X13” clay baker. It was fabulous.

    3. Exactly, Doris! Recipe websites often underestimate time, amount of ingredients, etc. Probably to make it seem simpler to prepare, lol. But this really is a delicious recipe !

    4. 5 stars
Hello Doris, yes I agree with you. If making from start to finish in one go, it absolutely is time consuming. I would suggest to chop and measure ingredients the day before as well as to prepare the potatoes ahead of time. The following day would be used to cook the meat mixture, assemble the ingredients according to the recipe and bake. I double the recipe as it freezes well too. This recipe is delicious!

    5. Disagree. These are all kitchen staples – I had everything and have not been to the grocery store in over a week. Less than 30 minutes from refrigerator to oven. Easy and delicious weeknight meal.

My son is 16 and loves Shepherds pie. I’ve made many variations over the years, but when I made this one both my husband and son commented that it was the best yet. Thanks!

  207. 5 stars
Easy breezy recipe and my housemates loved it! I added a 1/2 cup of dry red wine to the house and extra minced garlic

  208. 5 stars
Simplicity’s at its best so delicious my Son Dylan came over the other day for a visit after work we put it together and baked it in my large cast iron skillet comfort food at its best

  209. Have you ever tried to freeze this? I’m thinking it would be great to have at the ready but not sure how the potatoes would fair.

  210. 5 stars
Delish! I doubled (more like tripled) the Worcestershire sauce and used a herbs de provence blend instead of the spice(herbs de provence has thyme, lavender, fennel and basil). I also added a dash of fancy celery salt. Turned out amazing. Had to use a little extra flour because of the floor of Worcestershire sauce.

  211. Very lovely this. Upped the worcestershire sauce to about 4 tbsp, but otherwise what a completely enjoyable weekend lunch this turned out to be. Kids and wife all thrilled with it.

    Thanks so much!

  212. 5 stars
This is a keeper fore sure. I used golden potatoes instead of russet and added shredded colby jack cheese to the top before baking. This recipe allows you to tweak and add things you want. Yummy!

  213. Currently in the oven. I did put a layer of creamed corn and the corn.Hope there’s not too much spill over. Used a 13×9 glass casserole dish and probably should’ve piped the potatoes since it was a bit of work to spread the mash on that corn layer but I’m sure it’ll be fine. Perfectly worded receipe to follow and make into your own. 5 STARS!

  214. 5 stars
Oh so delicious on a cool fall night! Made this for the hubby and I and we both loved it. I lightened up the potatoes by using WAY less butter (1 T) and Buttermilk instead of half and half. Otherwise followed the recipe and used beef. I’d love to try it with lamb.

  215. 5 stars
Excellent recipe, I added a diced hot chili from the garden (most American and ALL Irish recipes are a bit bland for me), and added a 1/4 cup red wine. Amazingly good. Thank you for the recipe!

  216. 5 stars
This was delicious! Made a few substitutes based on what we had in the pantry: fresh carrots and corn. Also sub’d cornstarch for flour and chicken stock.
    Definitely make this again 😊

  217. Shepherd’s pie is delicious! You simply cannot beat the classic element of this recipe though, in making it for dinner, I am adding a dash of some homemade BBQ sauce to the meat. 🙂

  218. 5 stars
I made this to use up left over hamburgers from high school fund raising event. Came home with over 20 burgers. Chopped them up with food chopper and followed the recipe. We like garlic so we doubled it. Thanks for good recipe.

  219. 5 stars
Was an awesome dish, the whole family loved! I just went heavier on all the spices. Will definitely make again!

  220. 5 stars
I’ve made this several times now, and it’s just perfect! I wouldn’t change a thing, which says a lot coining from me, as I’m always modifying recipes!

  221. Best shepherds pie I’ve ever had! Made it exactly as written except I also added 1/3 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the potatoes to increase the cheesy-ness! Delicious!

  222. I made this vegan by using plant based “beef”, vegetable stock, omitting the Worcestershire sauce and because I didn’t have corn, I used lentils instead.

For the topping I used vegan butter and almond milk. I also omitted the parmesan cheese.

Thank you for the wonderful recipe. I know I changed a lot, but because my daugher in law is vegan, I had to make it for her.

  223. This was not only my first Shepard’s Pie attempt but also my first mashed potatoes attempt (I know…ridiculous). Super delicious and easy to do! I only had fresh rosemary so that flavor is prominent and I also went heavy on the garlic. DELICIOUS!

  224. I made this for dinner yesterday and followed recipe exactly and mine was very sloppy and runny. It did not look anything like the picture.

    1. So was mine! I had wondered why it was runny. I think I was too hasty and didn’t let the beef broth evaporate enough? But, overall, it was very tasty and will make it again!

    2. That’s strange. I kept adding more water, but I also let it simmer for 30 minutes or so as we cleaned up the kitchen.

  225. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe with ground beef, ground bison, and ground elk. Absolutely delicious every time!

  226. 5 stars
I made this for the first time and I must say it was easy and the blend of flavors were very tasty 😋. I added more cheese to the potatoes and little to no salt. I like for people to add their own salt.

  227. 5 stars
I am so glad I tried this. I never write recipe reviews but I had to. It tasted AMAZING and was a hit with everyone in the house. I made 3 small changes. I doubled the salt in the meat mixture, and added garlic powder and onion powder along with the other seasonings for a little extra flavor. I didn’t have beef stock so I used a beef bouillon cube and a cup of water instead. I only had red potatoes so used 4 of them. It came out perfect.

  228. Xanthan gum will also thicken (is gluten free), but read the directions; you’ll need much less and will dissolve it before adding it into the mix. Bob’s Red Mill makes it and is at most grocery stores in the baking or gluten free aisle.

  229. Third time with this recipe. All ways good. But found out the first time 9×9 was too small. P.S. I live in Elwood In. Hi. Neighbor.😎

    1. I’ve made this twice now. Best shepherd’s pie ever! The rosemary adds such a deep, savory flavor. I’ll never use another recipe for shepherd’s pie.

  230. 5 stars
I actually used cubed beef and fresh veggies. I also did a mixture of sweet potatoes and white potatoes for the topping. It turned out fantastic!

  231. We loved this dish!!!!! Cheated and used a family size packet of garlic mashed potatoes with the cheese. It is soooo good. Have made it twice, turned out perfect both times. Best shepherd’s pie recipe ever.

  232. 5 stars
Extremely easy to make. Since shepherd’s pie has a distinct flavor due to the spices, I didn’t deviate from that other than salting to taste if it needed a bit more salt. Also, I used instant mashed potatoes because that’s the kind of potatoes used when I’ve bought shep pie from somewhere. I wanted to recreate that consistency. I used 2 packs of Idaho brand, but I followed the remainder of the potato topping instructions like using half n half, butter, garlic & parm etc. Then I used frozen mixed veggies, so there were a few lima beans and green beans in there. Overall great taste and very easy to make, esp with instant potatoes.

  233. 5 stars
Excellent recipe, very good flavor! Just make certain to drain off fat from beef prior to next steps or you’ll get a runny wet pie.👍🏻

  234. 5 stars
This recipe take an old favorite from camp days & elevates to a delicious new level! —- enjoy by all my family! And we appreciate the traditional English lamb as well as the beef version (the latter cooked more often). Our modifications: i enjoy the Parmesan in the potatoes, but my guys do not; and with the beef version, we add chopped carrots in lieu of peas.

  235. 5 stars
Turned out so yummy! Will definitely do this super easy, delicious dish again. The directions are very clear and easy to follow! Thanks!!

  236. 5 stars
We just used lamb for this recipe and it rules!
I never leave comments weather I like a recipe or not, but I had to here.

    Perfect ratios. Beautiful flavor combinations.
    You hit it!!!

  238. I made this with ground pork I hate ground beef and lamb it was delicious!!! I cooked everything but potatoes in my cast iron pan and went straight to the oven so much easier.

  239. 5 stars
I now hold the crown for best Shepherd’s pie. Already being requested for the next family dinner. Might try cutting back on the butter next time. Going to add this to our family cook book.

  240. 5 stars
Pretty much a perfect cottage pie! I blended the spices through tomato paste to make it easier/quicker as I use Better than Bouillon. 9 servings fills a 9×13 pan perfectly. I added a quarter cup of red wine to the meat. Next time, I’ll go on the smaller side of the potatoes as it was a bit potato heavy.

  241. 5 stars
All I have to say is WOW!! I made this recipe with tiny modifications like using a bullion cube instead of ready to go broth and adding a bit more parmesean for flavour.
Other than that, I followed the recipe to a T.

  242. 5 stars
The prep time for this recipe was about 20 minutes. I switched up the order slightly. While the seasoned ground beef browned, I diced my onion and some garlic. After I drained the fat from the meet, I added onions and seasonings. I did not have tomato paste, so I used a can of tomato sauce. Once the flour and broth was added, I had a tasty gravy! My husband said it tasted almost like my beef stew. It was a hit!

  243. 5 stars
So good! I didn’t have tomato paste so I puréed some small garden tomatoes and used up some sugar free ketchup I had and it worked. I also used butter instead of oil to cook the onions. And added a small amount of garden green beans with the other veggies (basically halved the corn and subbed green beans) I used instant potatoes as a cheat and put shredded cheese and parm cheese on top too! lol

  244. 5 stars
Excellent! Easy, but prep time for me was certainly more than 20 minutes!

If you double or triple it, cut back on the salt, especially if there is salt in your beef broth.

Less salt is also better for the hearts of the ones you love!

  245. 5 stars
I made this recipe using vegetarian alternatives (impossible meat and vegetable stock with a beef bullion cube). Let me just say, even with the changes it was DELICIOUS. Try it!!

    1. I’ve made a similar version using ground turkey that came out really well. The chicken flavor may not go well with the beef broth and worcestershire sauce, but you could try subbing chicken or veggie broth. Cooking is an adventure!

    2. I’m using ground turkey tonight, it smells wonderful. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use ground chicken.

    3. I won’t be trying ground but just baked and chopped chicken.. I think it’ll be just as good as the beef version

  246. 5 stars
Love this recipe. I am from England and i know a good cottage pie and a.shepherds pie. It is delicious but not quite enough for 6 people, at least not 2 grandsons and son in law, my daughter and myself!

  247. I love this recipe. I doubled so I could send a casserole to my in-laws as my mil doesn’t cook anymore. Thyme and rosemary were a bit too strong for me, so I added a bit extra Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, and beef broth. Also, I didn’t have any corn so I subbed green beans. The only other thing I did differently was to use a container of pre-made mashed potatoes. Added the seasonings, garlic, and parm to them. this is a great time saver for a busy weeknight. It’s a hit with my family… Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. 🙂

    1. I used arrowroot instead of flour and it came out incredible!!! It’s much healthier for you than flour and it doesn’t give you that bloating feeling.

    2. You can mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 4 ounces of cold water, mix well until the cornstarch is fully dissolved (add more water if necessary), and add to the pan in place of the flour (step 5). It’s important that you use cold water or the cornstarch will be lumpy. The sauce should be noticeably thicker after the 5 minute simmer.

    3. I rarely leave comments on recipes, but I’ve been using this one for years now and it is amazing! I have tweaked it a bit over the years and use an Italian herb blend rather than the herbs listed. I still put as much parsley as the recipe calls for. I also double the Worcestershire and use a bag of mixed veg instead of just corn, peas, and carrots. I use salt and garlic to taste rather than measuring. It’s so good, my picky 6 year old goes for seconds and my meat and potatoes fiance loves eating his veggies!

  248. 5 stars
Awesome recipe!! I really like the timing of ingredients. The steps were relevant and made shaping the shepherds pie depth of flavour easy. Love love love this, thank you!!

  249. This was excellent! I cheated and used store bought refrigerated mashed potatoes and, after heating and tasting, added the cheese and garlic. Definitely cut down my time in the kitchen. Will make again. Thank you for the recipe and great instructions!

    1. I use home canned green beans 1st then add the cooked meat and last layer the mashed potatoes. I do drain the liquid from the beans before putting them in the casserole dish and I make sure I seal the potatoes to the edge of the dish to keep it from drying. The ingredients in the meat and potatoes are about the same as this recipe.

    2. Those store bought mashed potatoes are a godsend. There are some very tasty ones and it streamlines recipes like this and more!

  250. 5 stars
Have made this for years, but occassionly we space up some red yams aka sweet potatoes. You can’t g wrong!

  251. 5 stars
This was AMAZING! I’ve hated all Sheperd’s Pie recipes I’ve been fed – potatoes so bland and meat more tomatoey than gravy. But this knocked them all out of the park. 😋 The potatoes were like heaven (admittedly not super budget friendly…), and the meat rich and savory. Thank you! This will be a happy staple in our home now. 😊

  252. If you want to make it vegan Chickpeas can be subbed for the meat. And you can make cashew cream mashed potatoes. So good. Thanks again for the recipe! I made it with meat this time and didn’t have Tomato paste, so I used a little pasta sauce. That worked too!

  253. 5 stars
I have several recipes for Sheppard’s pie, and this one is a keeper! I took an ear of fresh corn and used the corn in with the meat and other veggies, also added about 3 tablespoons of horseradish to the mashed potatoes and it was out of this world. Also topped the potatoes with more cheese and stuck the dish under the broiler to melt and brown the cheese. It was picture perfect for my guests who were most impressed!!
    Thanks!

  254. 5 stars
I made this for my family and it was so good! Loved it for leftovers the next day. Wondering if you could freeze it? I’d like to make some freezer meals for a friend and this would be a great one.

  255. 5 stars
Best Shepard’s pie EVER! I wish I had made more to freeze, next time we’re going to double it. We substituted Yukon gold potatoes and they were incredible. Thank you for this recipe.

  256. 5 stars
So delicious! My family loves shepherd’s pie but we don’t eat meat anymore. I substituted Beyond ‘Beef’ for the meat and veggie broth for the beef broth. It worked out fantastic. I will definitely be making this again.

  257. 5 stars
I have made many shepherds pie recipes. This one is the best. It is my go to. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe the best ever.

  258. 5 stars
Love this recipe! I added a little more beef broth, and wostershire sauce also I added some mint sauce as I used lamb mince! It was amazing.

    1. Half-and-half, also known as half cream in the United Kingdom, is a simple blend of equal parts whole milk and light cream. It averages 10 to 12% fat, which is more than milk but less than light cream. Due to its lower fat content than cream, it can’t be whipped.

  259. 4 stars
This is absolutely DELICIOUS! I’ve made it a few times now, and my only complaint is that it always comes out extremely oily/greasy. Am I doing something wrong?

    1. 5 stars
Make sure you drain the hamburger and onion mixture before adding anything else. It doesn’t say to , so I’m not sure if you did. That should help

    2. I prefer to cook my ground beef with a lid on to retain the moisture in the pan, often also cooking it from frozen or sometimes partially thawed. Once it’s cooked through but still full of moisture I drain the meat (can use a colander). Much of the grease is removed when doing this. I then add my seasonings after this step and then return to heat to brown and continue with recipe. Great recipe!!! Made this today and it was loved by all. Definitely going to be a keeper in my recipe book.

    3. I would try draining the fat (or just some of it) off after browning the meat. Then add a little extra broth if you feel likes it needs it.

    4. 5 stars
I have made cottage pie with beef and this recipe with ground lamb
The ground lamb seems to.have more moisture than ground beef. I love.this recipe but may use a little.less stock. The lamb may have.less.moisture depending whether it is.bought in a packet or from a butcher

    5. You could try using a lower fat ground beef, like 90/10 -or- after you cook the meat remove all the drippings from the pan, -or- place all the meat on a paper towel to soak up the fat. I love this recipe too!

    6. 5 stars
So good!! I drain the meat after cooking before adding the flour, tomato paste, etc, I’m going to add mushrooms next time as one reviewer suggested. Sounds like an awesome idea. I also always add extra corn, carrots and peas.

  260. 5 stars
Loved it. I would substitute the Worcestershire for something else next time, not a fan.The rest is wonderful.

  261. This must’ve been the 15 th time I’ve used this recipe, and each time better than ever! GREAT! AWESOME! ITS THE BEST RECIPE EVER!!

  262. 5 stars
I have used this recipe exactly as is, twice before. My whole family loved it. This time I doubled it as there are never leftovers. Only changes I made, I added a 1/2 cup extra broth and more vegetables. Added some green beans as well. When making the mashed potatoes, I added about 3/4 of a cup beef broth(it was what was left over). Potatoes came out super creamy and loaded with added flovor. My family and I love this recipe. Thank you for posting it

  263. 5 stars
I used mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes since hubby is diabetic.
I will be making this again! Delicious!

  264. Coming from an English background I love shepherds pie.
I came across this recipe and made it.
This is now my official pie recipe I use. So delicious.
Tonight I’ll try half broth and half red wine. It should add a little something.

    1. I make double or triple recipe of meat mixture and freeze that. Thaw one portion in fridge overnight and make the potatoes fresh. Very yummy recipe.

I froze this last month after it was assembled, but before I was ready to put in the oven. I just baked it and it still tastes delicious. I think it’s a great dish to freeze! Just my opinion. 🙂

Very tasty and best shepherds pie I have made. If I made it ahead next time I would have one of the kids take it out of the refrigerator earlier. Took longer to cook than I anticipated

I made this last night and it was delicious. I didn’t change anything. My son loves shepherds pie and my husband and I and my son all went back for seconds!! Thankfully there is enough left over for my husband and me for tonight’s supper!! A definite remake!!!

Thank you for posting this recipe, Amanda! It is delicious. I hope the leftovers are ok to freeze. I know I’ll enjoy them as well.

I love the ease of this recipe with the following additions/changes. I use half red wine and half stock for a more traditional sauce. I also add sliced mushrooms which I sauté the onions. I too make it in a cast iron pan so it’s a one pot meal. If anyone does add mushroom be sure to consider your liquids. I like a lot of gravy so I don’t reduce but others might like a tighter sauce.

For the potatoes I use heavy cream and two egg yolks added to the mix. It produces a creamier potatoes which I like to pipe on top “to make it fancy” my boys would say.

Sheperd’s pie is a favourite of mine. I travel to the UK often and always enjoy trying country versions. If your readers like traditional and fun British dishes, give a Sussex pond pudding a go! It’s delicious and such a show piece.

    1. I don’t understand why you just don’t post your own recipe then. Leave this one alone. I want to try it please.

      1. I always find it funny when you go to a recipe and see, “I made this but I completely changed everything about it!” It’s funny sometimes.

Dawn, while your additions and changes sound great, you didn’t really make this recipe, you made your own.

      2. Then follow the recipe, Joyce …
I don’t think anyone was trying to offend you by adding their comment…
Thank you, Dawn! I followed your additions and the recipe was AMAZING!

I came up with my own before reading and sounds the same as in your comments Dawn. I love the slight changes you made to the recipe. It’s in the oven right now. I love reading comments and recommendations. I am not a baker. I cook from the research and love. I like to play with recipes. It’s one of the best things about cooking. It is an art. Thank you Dawn I appreciated your comments and suggestions 💗

    3. This is a great recipe as is and thanks for the additional ideas and stories, Dawn! Love it! I can picture it all fancy. 🙂

I liked this recipe. I’ve had many a Shepard’s pie, and I think the biggest challenge is making sure the veggies and meat aren’t too liquid-y, and the addition of the flour and tomato paste do help to thicken it nicely. My only concern is the amount of potatoes listed (I believe it says two large potatoes) is quite comical! I ended up using about 8 medium-sized potatoes and it was *just* enough to cover in my 9×11 pan. I will most likely use even more potatoes, next time around, and perhaps add a little wine to the broth. One change I made, I took a mixture of mozerella, Romano, and some of the Parmesan cheese and dusted it over the top of the potatoes right before I put it in the oven. This created a nice cheesy crust on top, and was a nice texture addition to the creamy potatoes. I also used fresh parsley, thyme, and a little rosemary since I had them on hand. Very much enjoy the flexibility of this recipe, and how you can really play with spices and seasonings.

Thanks for your suggestions Dawn, I did everything you listed and it turned out amazing. My husband and I ate 2/3 of the pan.

  269. Does the grease from the hamburger meat need to be drained before adding the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste?

  270. Can I premake everything then place in fridge and take it later in the evening to bake? I assume it’ll take longer to bake but still works right?

  271. Cooking this for a friend – it may go straight into their freezer. Should I assemble and hold off on baking? That way they can throw in the oven when they are ready for it?

  272. About how many adults will this feed? My family are big eaters so I’m not sure if I should go with the six servings or if I need to make extra?

This was soooo good! So much flavour and easy to make! This is now my go-to Shepherd’s Pie recipe! Thanks!

  274. I made this. It was yummy. Made a lot. They only thing I added was onion soup mix and brown gravy. I left out the flour slurry. It was flavorful and will make again. My frozen veggies included green beans. More veggies not a bad thing. Topped with Bob evans loaded mashed potatoes. So no cheese needed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really good and super easy for a mom whom wishes she could cook. My son and husband are picky eaters and really enjoyed this. I’m always looking for new and EASY recipes to try. This one is a keeper and definitely will do this again! Thank you so much for giving me a dinner I could actually make! I highly recommend this!!!😊

I love this recipe! The first time I made it I followed the recipe exactly, but the next time I added sweet potatoes into my mash and sprinkled some chili peppers on top. Ultimate comfort food

  277. 5 stars
Made it this evening with a few minor variations; I used red wine instead of tomato paste, an extra tbsp of flour due to the increase in fluids, 1/4 cup of Pho Broth/3/4 cup of Beef broth (a little extra zing). I also didn’t have corn, boiled fresh mini carrots with the potatoes, then diced them and added to the filling. I baked for the first minutes as specified, then added a layer of cheeses (Cheddar, Provolone, Asiago) and topped with crushed walnuts for the last baking period.

All minor improvisations based on what I had available – except the toppings. Hands down, the best I’ve eaten, and I first started making versions of Shepherd’s Pie 55 years ago as a young boy with two working parents. I thought I had a great recipe, but I bow to the greater talent! Thank you!! Thank you!!!

  278. Great recipe! We’ve made it several times. Has anyone made it to casserole and then put it in the freezer, then baked it when your family is ready?

  279. 5 stars
Lovely recipe thank you. I guess the frozen veg requirement is to save time and whilst I usually have frozen beans and peas I prefer fresh vegetables and used only fresh this time. The flavour possibilities are endless depending on one’s preferences. I’ll make it again.

I have it in the fridge and going to cook closer to dinner! Just from tasting everything as I went I know it will be great! Thank you! A loved one requested this as birthday dinner.

We have a diabetic in the family so I used mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes. I will be adding this recipe to my rotation. It’s so good!

  282. this is the best Shepherd’s pie recipe i have done . so yummy, perfect seasoning to my family’s taste!!!!

  283. Mine came out tasting good but it didn’t hold together well. Everything kinda mushed onto one when I scooped it out. Any ideas how to make it firmer

    1. 5 stars
For a firmer filling you can alter your ratio of flour and stock, so add maybe half a spoonful more flour or use a little less stock. Just make sure when using more flour you cook it the mix for a bit longer to take out the raw flour flavor.

If your potatoes are too soft add less half and half. What I personally like to do is switch half and half for whole milk and increase the amount of parm by a little less than 1/4th cup. Just take a little extra time to reduce the mix a bit more (I cooked mine on the stove for about 15 mins after adding the flour) and that should help make it firmer!

  284. 5 stars
Best Shepherds Pie I’ve ever had. Only change was used white cheddar instead of parm in the potatoes. Seriously delicious. Thank you!

  285. 5 stars
I love Shepherds Pie and this is a good, easy recipe. I followed the recipe but added more veg as my family likes it a little lighter.
Used peas, carrots, mushrooms, bell peppers, and French cut green beans. Yum!

  286. I can’t wait to make this! Can I substitute almond or coconut flour for the all purpose flour? Will it achieve the same result when combined with the meat filling? Hubby’s granddaughter (gluten-free) is staying with us 2 days/week for the summer, and I think this would be a perfect addition to our dinners.
    Thank you!

    1. You probably won’t get the thickening you want from almond or coconut flour. You might try all purpose GF Flour like Kjng Arthur or Krusteaz. I’ve had good results with them.

    2. No on both. King Arthur has a gluten free flour called Measure for Measure that is a 1:1 sub for wheat flour. It will work perfectly. Take care!

    3. Chickpea flour works well as a thickener in savory dishes. I have also taken a handful of raw cashews and ground them into a flour and used that.

I was having a family dinner and wanted something tasty, somewhat easy and what I thought everyone would enjoy. This turned out delicious! Everyone went for a second helping. I doubled the recipe so there are leftover which I’m sure will be gone in no time. If you haven’t tried this, you should as you won’t be disappointed.

  288. 5 stars
Great recipe. To limit dishes, I cooked the beef filling in a cast iron and just topped with the potatoes. Our family likes to mix a bit of mayonnaise into the potatoes for flavor but I increased the cooking time an extra 10 minutes for a total of 40 minutes as the cast iron takes time to heat up. Regardless, it was a hit for dinner!

Thank you, Amanda, for sharing such a perfect recipe. I tried to add a little of homemade fried shallots and it’s simply delicious.

  290. 5 stars
We loved this recipe! It was easy to follow and turned out delicious. I used fresh thyme, rosemary, and sage for the herbs instead and forewent the corn. Will definitely make this again.

  291. 5 stars
I’m making this for the second time for dinner tonight. It’s easy to make and absolutely delicious. I followed the recipe just as explained and wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks for sharing this delicious recipe.

  292. 5 stars
Really enjoyed this. Very easy and straight forward to prepare. I probably will cut the butter in half next time. It seemed like a lot for the amount of potatoes. I put a layer of cut up bacon slices in between the meat and potatoes. I’ve used my English mum’s recipe for years, but I’m switching to this one.

  293. 5 stars
I tried this recipe for the first time. No regrets. It is delicious and easy to make.
I just added a twist by sprinkling paprika and a mix of cheese on top.
It’s a keeper and I highly recommend this recipe.
    Thanks.

Very good recipe! I added 1lb of ground lamb with 1lb of ground beef. It’s blended beautifully. We noticed it needed more salt, being I added more meat. Everyone had seconds.

  295. 5 stars
This has become one of our family’s favorite dishes! I’ve followed the recipe precisely every time… very straightforward and so yummy! Question, can I freeze the leftovers?

  296. 5 stars
I’ve used this recipe to the T, made this dish. 3-4 times . Each time improvising! This is the best recipe of Shepard’s pie ever tried. Now my friends want this to be made for them.
Keep it going! And keep posting such exotic and perfect recipes!

    1. I would also like to know if you can used canned veggies. I think I am going to peel and cut fresh carrots and use canned corn and peas. We will see what happens 😊.

  297. 5 stars
Really easy and flavorful. My first time making shepherds pie and My family loved it. This one’s a keeper! Thanks so much

  298. Delicious. I add cinnamon and nutmeg to the meat. Even better with lamb, but still very good with mixed ground beef. Next time, I will add feta to the meat. I bet it tastes good, too.

  299. This recipe is delicious!!! It has become a regular addition to my repertoire! The spices that go into the mashed potatoes really add wonderful flavor! I’d highly recommend this recipe!

This is my first time making Shepherd’s Pie. My husband has enjoyed it before, but it’s new to me. Other than doubling the veggies, I followed the recipe and we love it!

Used ketchup instead of tomato paste, and put Parmesan cheese on top instead of in mashed potatoes. Yummy recipe!

  302. A small question, potato topping third item says 1/3 half and half??? Not sure what this measurement is for.

    1. Half and half is a mixture of half milk, half heavy cream. It’s basically just a thicker, creamier milk. Great for potatoes, shit for anything else 😅

    2. Half and half is a mixture of milk and cream(half of each). It’s in the dairy section next to the cream. They mean 1/3 cup of “half and half”.

    3. Half and half refers to 10% cream. So a third cup of 10% cream. If you don’t have that you could replace with 18% or 33%.

This has become my go-to recipe on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m not a huge fan of corned beef and cabbage, so I was on a mission to find something else to eat on that holiday. It’s a huge hit. My husband and I love it and have had it multiple times throughout the year! I even use your suggested mashed potatoes recipe when making them as a side dish. Thanks so much!

  304. 5 stars
Easy and delicious! I used corn and green beans for veggies, just my preference.I love this recipe!

  305. 5 stars
I love this recipe, the combination of the two things is great but the mashed potatoes by themselves are amazing. This is my families new go to Shepard’s pie recipe. We love our pasta so it’s nice to switch it up with this. Great use of chopped meat too. Thanks for the yummy idea.

  306. I lived in the UK and have missed real Shepherd’s pie with lamb so much. I came across lamb in the store and then found this recipe. This is the real deal. I did make some adjustments. I partially cooked the meat first and drained it. Then I cooked the onions and used some of the lamb fat instead of oil and then added the lamb meat back in. I also doubled the vegitables. My elementary aged son loved it so much that he asked me to make it again for his birthday dinner! (Draining the fat made it less mushy and runny.) I served it with Yorkshire Pudding and two veg on the side just like my best friends Mum back in England does. Yum!!!

  307. 5 stars
I just made this fit the first time w/ lamb, delishious. I have leftover baked potatoes, I used then instead of boiling more… Best decision, peeled, cut up and heated them in micro. Added butter and heavy cream, smashed all up. Mixed with the cheese and…OMG. THANKS FOR SHARING.

Just made this tonight and it’s absolutely amazing! My husband said it’s as good as he had in an Irish restaurant we go to. Definitely saving this recipe!

My friends husband just got out of the hospital, they’re newlyweds so she’s had a pretty rough week, so I asked what they were hungry for,and I’d cook it for them. (He was tired of bland hosp food,) after much deliberation they told me Shepards Pie. I’m 58 and I cook alot, and I’m a good, no great cook, and I’ve never made a Shepards Pie. I found this one, and boy am I ever glad I did. This is fantastic, they loved it so much, shes never going to use her old recipe, only this one. I of course tweeked a few things. Omg, I could barely wait til it came out of the oven. I made some Red Lobster type biscuits , and mini cherry cheesecake tacos for dessert, what a wonderful meal. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.

Best Shepard’s Pie ever! I used ground beef. It tasted even better the next day . Thank you!

  311. 5 stars
My family loves this. I make it with arrowroot flour instead of regular flour and regular frozen mixed vegetables. The family loves it and I’m able to keep it gluten free (we have a family member with an auto immune disease that gluten aggravates).

It’s definitely on a regular rotation.

  312. 5 stars
I had to do some creative substituting once I realized I did NOT have tomato paste (pureed some canned tomatoes and used gravy instead of broth to help compensate for the moisture difference), but somehow it still turned out great. Thank you!

For years I have been trying to figure out what is in an area Irish restaurant’s shepherd’s pie and this recipe hit the nail on the head. It is THE best shepherd’s pie I’ve had in a long time and is almost a dead ringer to the restaurant’s pie taste. I will never make a plain old shepherd’s pie again………we LOVE this recipe!!!
