The Best Classic Shepherd’s Pie – AKA Shepards Pie or Cottage Pie. Ground Beef (or lamb) with vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with cheesy mashed potatoes, and baked.

Classic Shepards Pie on a plate

Shepherd’s Pie

So, this is how you spell it:  Shepherd’s Pie.  But, from doing a quick google search, it came to my attention that TONS of people think it’s Shepards Pie.

Irish Shepherd’s Pie

Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie would actually call for ground lamb.  The difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie is the meat.  Cottage Pie uses ground beef, while Shepherd’s Pie uses ground lamb.

I called this recipe Shepherd’s Pie.  But, I wrote the recipe so that you could use ground beef or ground lamb.

I typically use ground beef because it is widely available.  But, for a special occasion, like St. Patricks day, I would use ground lamb.

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

(Note – The full printable recipe is at the bottom of this post)

Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Making the best Shepherd’s Pie is not difficult.  But, there are a few steps to it.  You have to make the meat mixture, the mashed potatoes, assemble the casserole, and bake it.

I find that the easiest way to make this dish is to work ahead.  You could make the beef or lamb mixture ahead of time.  Or, you could make the mashed potatoes ahead of time.

You could also make the whole recipe ahead of time.  Just assemble the casserole, cover the dish, and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it.  I find it is best to bake it within 3 days of preparing it.

When you are ready to bake it, take it out of the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before you need to bake it to let it start coming to room temperature.  Uncover it, and bake.

Ingredients

Meat Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 lb. 90% lean ground beef -or ground lamb
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves -minced
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup frozen mixed peas & carrots*
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels

Potato Topping:

  • 1 ½ - 2 lb. russet potatoes -about 2 large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter -1 stick
  • 1/3 cup half & half
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Instructions

Make the Meat Filling.

  • Add the oil to a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the onions. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef (or ground lamb) to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Add the parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and and pepper. Stir well. Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the flour and tomato paste. Stir until well incorporated and no clumps of tomato paste remain.
  • Add the broth, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen corn. Bring the liquid to a boil then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Set the meat mixture aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Make the potato topping.

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot. Cover the potatoes with water. Bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return the potatoes to the hot pot. Let the potatoes rest in the hot pot for 1 minute to evaporate any remaining liquid.
  • Add butter, half & half, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes and stir until all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Add the parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Stir until well combined.

Assemble the casserole.

  • Pour the meat mixture into a 9x9 (or 7x11) inch baking dish. Spread it out into an even layer. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat. Carefully spread into an even layer.
  • If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet so that the filling doesn’t bubble over into your oven. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.** Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

*If you can’t find frozen mixed peas and carrots, you could use ½ cup frozen peas and ½ cup frozen sliced carrots.
**Bake at 400° F.  Start preheating the oven after you make the meat mixture (listed in step 6).

My boyfriend and I make this dish often. We love it. & it has become a staple in our recipe book. Absolutely none goes to waste. Delish meal!

  2. 5 stars
Delicious and a hit with the whole family! Easy to make, leftovers tasted just as good the next day. This recipe is a keeper.

  3. 5 stars
I made this with ground turkey, as I was told by my PCP to reduce red meat. It smelled amazing while cooking, so I hoped that meant I wasn’t going to miss the beef flavor. I used leftover mashed potatoes so they didn’t have cheese in them originally, but I added it on top to brown in the last 5 minutes. Family rated it Yum = a keeper! Tasted as good as it smelled! I took pictures but I don’t see a place to upload them.

Awesome recipe I’ve made this several times!
    A couple things to note….
When using the option to multiply the recipe by 2 or 3 the butter and potato quantity don’t adjust properly. The tbsp/lbs change but it will say to use the same number if potatoes/sticks of butter.
Also, I recommend draining the fat from the beef/onion mixture or the meal will be pretty wet and greasy when finished.

  5. 5 stars
I made this as written but with a few changes due to what I had on hand…and it was delicious! Didn’t have corn or peas and forgot to add the cheese to the mashed potatoes, but everything was still delicious! I sauteed onion, leek, celery and carrots…then pretty much followed the recipe. Yum! My hubby loved it.

I fell in love with shepherds pie when I went to England back in the early 1990s and have been looking for a good recipe ever since. Thank you so much this one is the best five stars, hands-down.

  7. 5 stars
I chose this recipe because I had all the ingredients on hand and I’m overjoyed at how delicious it came out. It took me an hour and a half from start to finish though but so worth it. I followed it almost to the T. I had more veggies so I added more broth and put it in a 9×13. Having a shallow depth made me think I wouldn’t need to let the dish cool longer so I dug in and burnt my mouth anyway. Oh well! Thanks for sharing this recipe! I’ll make it again and again.

Made this for the second time last night. My boyfriend ate 3 servings!!! 2 at dinner and another at 2am ( he works late) love this!!! This will be on rotation menu for sure! 💖

  9. 5 stars
My daughter requested shepherd’s pie so I searched for a recipe and yours caught my eye. I prepared the recipe as directed and it’s delicious! Full of flavor! I will make this my shepherds pie recipe from now on.

  10. 5 stars
Literally so good! I made this for my family, and they all loved it. I would recommend putting a little extra cheese on the top right before putting it in the oven 🙂

  11. 5 stars
I never comment on recipes though I use them alot and rely on reviews. This is one of the best recipes I’ve ever used! My family wouldn’t stop talking about it and ate until their stomachs hurt. I double the recipe so we would have leftovers the next day. It’s 9:45 am and my husband just ate the last of it for breakfast. Wow just wow! Delicious!

  12. Can you make the meat filling ahead and freeze it? Sorry if this has already been asked but the comments aren’t loading.

  13. 5 stars
This is an excellent recipe. It’s honest in its flavors. Top to bottom. Simple and absolutely delicious. Thanks for sharing 👍

  14. 5 stars
This recipe was delicious! A friend of mine invited me over for dinner, and served your shepherds pie. I,I rated it as a five star winner! I have always enjoyed shepherds pie, but never had a good easy recipe as this one is.
    Thank you for sharing.

  15. Having trouble seeing comments… has anyone tried freezing this and then heating? Looking for a “freezer friendly “ meal.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! I’ve frozen this recipe. It came out great! I usually double recipe & freeze one of them. I thaw in refrigerator overnight & bake as usual.

  16. 5 stars
OMG, this recipe was delicious. I have a question though. My mashed potatos stayed runny on the top. What could I have done wrong. I followed the recipe exactly.

    1. 5 stars
To avoid soggy potatoes. I use much less butter and for perhaps 3-4 minutes under the broiler crisps the top a bit at the end. Carful to watch the broiler part, every oven is different

  17. 5 stars
Love this recipe!! My wife always get excited when I make it for us. Super easy, and also agree. If you have a cast iron pan, use that and keep it all in one dish for easy clean up!!

    1. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe 3 times – it always gets raves. But my prep time is about an hour, maybe I’m just slow!!!

  18. 5 stars
The recipe is almost perfect for me, I did a double recipe and added a bit of onion soup mix at the point when the broth is added, not a whole packet, just enough to give it a bit more something something.

  19. 2 stars
Didn’t enjoy this recipe. The rosemary was too strong and I could taste the Worcestershire too much as well and this is with double the meat, but not double the other ingredients. I am so disappointed.

  20. 5 stars
I loved this recipe. I followed it exactly. Loved the tomato paste idea beef broth and flour to make a gravy base. It was a big hit with my husband. Thank you!

  21. 5 stars
This is the second time I’ve made this recipe. I really enjoy the final presentation and taste of the recipe. I make just one minor adjustment to the recipe. I cook the onions with the garlic together, than set aside. I then cook my ground beef by itself and when the beef is fully cooked I add the onion and garlic. I found it hard to cook the onions and beef together, to much volume and making sure the beef was fully cooked.

  22. 5 stars
This pie is delicious I split it into and gave 1/2 to my dear friends who need comfort food and 1/2 for us. It was so yummy!!!!!

  23. 5 stars
I doubled this and it came out so perfect, the family was loving it! Some changes I made: used half the rosemary and thyme, and used a little less parsley. I didn’t have tomato paste so I 1:1 substituted with ketchup and I didn’t have Worcestershire so I found a recipe online to make it and used my homemade! I had chicken broth on hand so used that instead of beef broth. Then for the mashed I added sour cream and skipped the Parmesan cheese. This was so savory and delicious! We served with italian bread! Thank you so much, I’ve been looking for a savory, gravy filled shepherds pie and this is it!

  24. 5 stars
This shepherds pie was soooo good,my family went back for seconds and some went back for thirds. Excellent comfort food on a wet chilly evening! This is definitely a keeper! Made in cast iron skillet and put right in oven with some apple smoked guyere on top 👍

  25. 5 stars
I made this recipe last weekend and it was hands down the best. Though I have never made shepherd’s pie, I added some Anaheim chili peppers to the meat and habanero cheese to the top. It was like a fire cracker having a party in my mouth!!! Not too hot but just the right amount of kick. The meat was flavorful. I also added fresh garlic and Parmesan cheese to the mashed potatoes. It was so good!!! Thank you for this recipe. Definitely worth making!!!!

If there were more stars I would give it to you!!!!

  26. 5 stars
Left out the corn & use 2 tbs of butter to make the roux but followed otherwise & it was the best I’ve ever made.

  27. 5 stars
This is by far the absolute best recipe I have tried in a long time. I have made it several times and it is always delicious! The only thing I do different is to double the sauce ingredients and instead of flour I use corn startch.

  28. 5 stars
I’ve made this 4 times. Ground chuck results in a better taste than the ground lamb.
Used frozen mixed veggies that had carrots, corn, green beans, and peas all together. Used 2C.
Use a metal spoon to spread the mashed potatoes. The potatoes won’t stick and make that task easier

  29. 5 stars
This recipe is hands down the best for a fast easy well seasoned weeknight meal, and I have researched the web for good shepherd’s pie recipes, believe me. It’s delicious and fast and works with ground turkey as well.

  30. 5 stars
Amazing! My wife doubted the kids would like it… they devoured it. Going to be put in the rotation of regular meals.

  31. 5 stars
I’m always looking for different Shepard Pie, (favorite of my hubby) this is Definitely a Keeper! Delicious, easy to make, and was a hit! Will make again! Thanks for sharing!

  32. 5 stars
I made it for my daughter, she loves the Shepherds Pie at a local pub and this seemed very much like it. I hope she enjoys it.

  33. 5 stars
My brother and sister in law just lost their 7 year old to leukemia yesterday. My SIL wanted shepherds pie tonight and I made this for her. She hasn’t eaten more than a few bites in days and she ate TWO bowls of this shepherds pie. Thank you for this recipe.

  34. 4 stars
Be careful if doubling or tripling recipe because the amounts of potatoes and the dish size do not adjust for the increase .

  35. 5 stars
I am vegan, but I made it for a couple in our church. I took a taste to see if I would add to my recipes that I make for others who are not vegan. It is a 5 star recipe. It can be gluten free if you replace the flour with corn starch.

  36. 5 stars
i made this for my roommates, and they both loved it. i couldnt even taste test (except for the potato) because i dont eat meat, and it turned out beautifully so i think that proves it’s a good recipe 🫡? thank you so much for sharing. ❤️

  37. 5 stars
Make this as often as I can and it’s always sooo good! It’s my go to when I make meals for others. I add creamed corn in the middle (on top of the meat, before the potatoes), which makes it soupy but still tastes amazing. I absolutely love this recipe

  38. 5 stars
This is favorite shepherds pie recipe. I prefer it with 90/10 lamb, however, the ground beef version is really good as well. Not as good, but, really good. I usually put mine in single serving dishes and finish the mashed potatoes in the air fryer, 400° for 15 minutes, but, I just read a suggestion to do it all in a single cast iron pan and I’m going to try that as well. It sounds wonderful.

  39. 5 stars
Absolutely wonderful recipe. I made this today but due to a beef allergy in the family I used turkey burger and chicken broth everything else was according to the recipe. It turned out delicious. My entire family gave rave reviews. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. I will definitely be making it again.

    1. 5 stars
I made it tonight and OMG ,it is delicious!!!. My husband loved it so much he ate 3 small bowls. I am looking forward to trying more of your “eats” ! Thank you for sharing this great recipe.

    2. 5 stars
Just made this – so delicious!! I felt extra sad today so to kick it up, I cooked the potatoes with extras of the meat seasonings, heavy cream, butter, salt/pepper and 2 beef bouillon cubes in the water.
Then after draining, dont rinse, and setting the potatoes aside. I brought the butter, heavy cream (instead of half and half cause that’s what I had) and seasonings to a simmer before mashing it in the potatoes. Fantastic!

    1. 5 stars
To make it easier and have less clean up, I made the meat mixture in my iron skillet then topped that with the potatoes. Right into the oven it went. No transferring to baking dish.
Good recipe, even though I did not follow it exactly, I never do. Definitely an easy dish to make. Thank you for sharing.

  40. 4 stars
The recipe turned out good, but half the thyme and Rosemary. It seems a little too strong at the current Ratio. IMO.

    1. 5 stars
Delicious! Great fall/winter all-in-one meal. My first time making Sherpherd’s Pie and it turned out great. A must have recipe! Note: If you’re not a fan of rosemary and/or thyme, use half. It will still have great flavor.

  41. Awesome recipe, easy to follow and make and melted in the mouth when eaten. I will be saving. I have made a version in the past many times. Wanted to have a recipe just to refresh my memory and I think it was the best I’d ever made.

  42. 5 stars
I start with mirepoix and use fresh garden corn and peas. The flavor is amped up if you have access to all fresh veggies. Grass fed, local farm lamb is a must! And Aroostook county (Maine) potatoes. Perfect for a dreary and rainy day dinner.

  43. 5 stars
I’be used this recipe so many times now and it’s my absolute FAVORITE shepherds pie. I don’t always follow everything to a t anymore but honestly the original is so good there is NOTHING I’ve really felt needed to change. This is one of my husbands favorites that I make and I have to agree. I love serving this with dinner rolls. Absolutely delicuous👌

  44. 5 stars
My mom makes these once a week and it’s seriously my favorite dinner!! I literally told my friends about it and now my besties dad makes it too 💀 it’s seriously delicious like YUMMM

  45. 5 stars
Never made Shepherds pie but I had the main ingredients, and wanted something different. I had to go with a couple of tweaks based on what I had, but I was pleasantly surprised. I can only imagine what the paste and the Worcestershire sauce did to it but I didn’t have it. I used a tomato. I also had chicken broth instead of beef. And cheddar instead of Parmesan. Still very yummy!

  46. 5 stars
I didn’t have parmesan cheese so I used Irish cheddar cheese that I had. I put a little on top and oh my it was so good! Thank you for the best sheppard pie ever!

  47. 5 stars
This recipe is excellent! I have made it several times. I have one request. Is there a chance that you could add a standard/metric option? The amount of work anyone outside the US must put in to use the recipe is immense. I have to use a convertor website to convert measurements, temperature and pan size. Thank you!

  48. 5 stars
Absolutely outstanding! I made a double batch and single portions freeze and reheat (microwave) very easily.

Wish I could pin this on Pinterest so I don’t lose it!

You really did a great job with this recipe!

    1. 5 stars
Easy to make and extremely filling. My wife loved it. First time making Shepherds pie and I did not vary from the recipe at all
      Thanks

  49. 5 stars
Great recipe! My family loved it. Just wanted to note, the carb nutrition fact % may be totally wrong, as I went, I wrote down each ingredient total carb then added all together and divided by 6 and it came out to 37 carbs. This is for the T1D people out there that need the carb ratios!

  50. 5 stars
Made this dish several times already according to this recipe.
What can I say – fantastic, great taste, easy to make and always some leftovers for later and the next day 🙂
5 out of 5 stars, well deserved.
    Cheers from Germany

    1. 5 stars
I just made it for dinner and everyone loves it! I replace Worcestershire sauce to light soy sauce, because I didn’t have that. It still works! Love it!

  51. 5 stars
Made the filling as specified. Didn’t have time to make home made potatoes. Used family sized four cheese instant mashed potatoes. Put together in the am, refrigerated, and baked in a 3 qt. Casserole dish for dinner at 375° for 35 minutes. Delicious! Will see how well the leftovers hold up. Should be enough for two more meals for two. Will make again using frozen, cooked O’Brien potatoes. The filling is the best and should pair well with various toppings, although I’m sure it would better when made with the potatoes as specified.

    1. 5 stars
I don’t use rosemary cuz I made this before and the Rosemary over powers it and I only use 1/2 tsp of thime. I also add a bit of tomato soup on top just a fine covering of it will do, and I broil it for 5-7 minutes before removing from the oven, the tomato soup and broil gives it a nice dark texture on top.
      Great recipe.
      Thank you very much.

  52. 5 stars
Really really delicious! I used a mix of russets and yellow potatoes and doubled the recipe and everyone loved it! Second and third helpings meant little leftovers.

  53. 5 stars
My husband and I love this recipe- especially on cool fall or winter days. I do have a question though; we are about to have a baby, would it be possible to freeze this before going into the oven? We’d love to be able to meal prep one of our favorite comfort foods.

    1. I prepped & froze the meat mixture for postpartum, so all I had to do was reheat the mixture, make the mashed potatoes, and bake! It was great!

    2. 5 stars
It is!! I made this in December for a freezer meal for after I had our son and it worked BEAUTIFULLY. I just froze it unbaked. I’d just suggest letting it thaw out plenty before trying to bake it, otherwise it’ll take a really long time.

  54. 5 stars
Excellent dish! Only extra thing we did was add an egg yolk to the mashed potatoes so they are golden throughout. Thanks for the new easy rotational dinner!

  55. 5 stars
This is the best recipe I’ve ever used for this. I did add a little more salt, garlic, and Worcester to taste. So so VERY good!

    1. 5 stars
Made this tonight, the whole family loved it! Best mashed potatoes I’ve ever made. I will make it again and again. Next time maybe 1/4 teaspoon of rosemary. It was definitely a powerful flavor coming through.

      Thanks for the great recipe!

  56. 5 stars
If I were to double the recipe and make it the day before, what temperature and time requirement be to reheat it

  57. 5 stars
Made this for the first time today. Turned out amazing! Didn’t have any peas and carrots so I used mixed veggies. Also added a few mushrooms that needed to be used. Didn’t change spices or anything else. Wonderful! Thanks so much!

  58. 5 stars
It is an easy recipe and tasjes super. I made several changes by adding more vegetables. So its not “real” sheperds pie! But still delicious!

  59. 5 stars
My husband does not typically like herb heavy meat and I have a two year old who has a typical toddler appetite. I made this for dinner today and it was an absolute hit! Usually I change recipes to fit my taste but I followed this one exactly (except I substituted heavy cream for half and half because that’s all I had). It was perfect as is. This will be a regular in our fall/winter rotation!

    1. 5 stars
I absolutely love this recipe. Reminds me of my mother’s recipe I had as a child. Love, love it with lamb. I double the recipe and freeze one ft later. Thanks for reminding me how lovely it is. It’s in my rotation now.

  60. 5 stars
Tried this tonight to make for my bf. We used ground turkey and chicken broth since it’s what we had, and already had premade mashed potatoes. This turned out amazing ! Didn’t taste test it once throughout making . Just trusted the process and it’s amazing ! So pleasantly surprised . 5 starts ! Can’t wait to make it again already !

  61. 5 stars
Very good, great taste, easy to make. I have some food allergies so we substituted the dairy & egg with almond milk, Country Crock plant based butter & JUST liquid egg substitute. Also omitted the Parmesan. Family loved it! Will definitely be making again.

  62. 5 stars
This was delicious and not too time consuming to make. We enjoyed it! The spices really added to the flavor and were perfect.

  63. Fantastic. I have made it many times. I am naturally lacking in cooking skills, and this is one of the few recipes that always turns out right. The kid loves it too.

  64. 5 stars
This is my go-to meal for guests because I cannot mess it up…plus the fantastic flavors. I use ground bison to improve the Omega 3 ratio and sweet potatoes on top to add little twist. Other those two substitutions, I use all the other ingredients per the recipe. Delicious.

  65. 5 stars
My family loved this! Doubled the recipe and baked it in 9×13 pan. Made it vegetarian by using Impossible ground beef, didn’t have half and half so used Greek yogurt and milk, substituted for parsley what was in my spice cabinet – oregano, basil and tarragon. My boys have asked for it to be added to our dinner rotation. It took me much longer than 20min for prep but it was worth it. Thanks for a great recipe.

  66. 5 stars
The recipe was made as written. It is absolutely the best Shepherds Pie I have tasted (that said coming from a senior). Sorry mom!

  67. 5 stars
Delicious!!! I followed the recipe except that I did not have the frozen vegetables called for in the recipe. I used frozen green beans and fresh carrots, diced, because those were the vegetables I had. Yummy, yummy. I would definitely make this again, but I might increase the tomato paste a tad because I like the tomato flavor. This was very easy. I served it with a nice green salad with vinaigrette dressing.

  68. 5 stars
Absolutely delish! The flavor of the meat was SO good. Easy to follow instructions and I liked the tips on prepping some (or all) beforehand to make it easier. This will be a staple in our home moving forward.

  69. 5 stars
I absolutely loved this dish I made two changes but it was delicious regardless. I got rid of the corn because I thought it was weird to put corn in a shepherd’s/cottage pie and I added red wine to it because it would make the sauce or the flavor a little more robust.

    1. 5 stars
I have just made your Shepard’s Pie right from scratch. Followed your directions as to a tee…..
I inserted my spatula to lift out and it just was like mush.
However it was very tasty full of flavour!
      What did I do wrong….

    2. This recipe was pretty easy and as long as you follow all steps it should turn out perfect I added more potatoes just because I like mash potatoes good luck

    1. 5 stars
My husband absolutely loves this recipe! I had to make it twice in one week. However, I modified the potato part of recipe and made quality instant mashed potatoes. The second time around I also used more broth than stated on recipe so as to have a bit of a ‘gravy’ for the potatoes.

    2. Dang it. I replied to your comment which inexplicably posted to Nora M. below. Please read the posted Nora response.

Sure.. But lamb & beef contain fat whick keeps them from burning when you saute them. So you’ll want to saute the ground chicken in some kind of fat, say, for example, 2 T of olive oil. If the ground chicken seems to start burning add a little more oil, but honestly, the 2T ought to do the trick.

  70. 5 stars
I made this last night and I must say that it was exceptional. Wouldn’t change a thing. Adjust serving to 8 for a 13×9. Perfect! Thank you so much for sharing.

  71. 5 stars
I made the dish, thank you for th recipe! Are you supposed to drain the liquid fat from the ground beef or leave it in? I drained it but then I worried the flour was meant to make a gravy with the fat, so I ended up adding in some cooking oil so the flour had something to mix with.

    1. Personally when I do something like this, I’ll usually drain the fat and add in the amount of butter/oil that I want. Really just for consistency so I know how much fat is in there for the roux. Depending on the fat content of the meat though you may or may not need to drain. Some recipes I don’t drain it.

    2. I made this with 93% lean ground beef, and there was negligible fat. If your cooked ground beef was swimming in fat, then I’d drain most of it. You do need some moisture to incorporate the flour and tomato paste. I just finished putting my base together. Will use 4 cheese instant mashed potatoes for topping as I’m running short on time. Fingers crossed. Review to follow.

  72. 5 stars
I’ve made this on regular repeat. It truly foes deserve the 5 star rating, it is delicious. I don’t change a thing.

  73. 5 stars
The best l have ever had, absolutely delicious!
I have made it plenty of times but l was missing something. I followed everything. Well all l can say is thank you for your recipe. 5 star for me

  74. 5 stars
This is the best Shepards pie! I’ve make it 3 times since finding it. I used fresh premade mashed from the grocery store to save time and added butter and parm. I also used gluten free flour and it was just perfect. Tmro I’m going to try to make mini ones inside of green bell peppers for single serve size ones but just will halve 2 peppers and bake them that way cuz it’s too good to waste if it doesn’t come out well.

  75. 5 stars
By far the best sheperds pie I or my wife have ever eaten. Followed recipe to the tee. Did add some shredded colby jack to the top.

  76. I don’t usually follow recipes to a T but I did this one and the reviews from my family were outstanding! This is a family treasure now and I tried to say it was a secret recipe but my Dad offered me $100 for it so I printed yours out and he still paid me the $100 haha! Anyone wanting to try it don’t change a thing it is perfect the way it is. Thank you for this we will enjoy if for years.

  77. 5 stars
I made this for dinner, its perfect! My son never eats this, but I had him sample the meat and he said he’ll have some, so happy. Thanks for there recipe.

  78. 5 stars
This recipe is perfection! I made it exactly as written. I have tried many and this one my husband asked me to write on a recipe card immediately after eating it. Thank you!

  79. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe twice & it is absolutely delicious!! I grew up hating shepherd’s pie but your recipe changed my whole mindset about it. Thank you!

  80. 5 stars
Great, even better the second day. I used a frozen mix bag with peas, carrots, green beans and corn. Added 3 tablespoons of beef gravy mix and flour mixture and turned out great!

  81. 5 stars
Loved it! I substituted soy sauce for Worcestershire sauce, since I don’t like Worcestershire sauce. I also didn’t add any parsley, rosemary, or thyme, because it was flavorful enough without them. And I used freeze-dried minced garlic, because I’m lazy. It was delicious and I’ll definitely be making it again.

  82. 5 stars
Supremely good! My mom and I made this together tonight and it turned out soooooo well, even with our big mistake! I cheated and got buttery mashed potato mix from the store (so I halved the amount of butter I used in the recipe). Somehow, we COMPLETELY missed step 5 which included some major ingredients. Just before the meat and potato…. dish (?) was done in the oven (that’s when we realized our mistake), we mixed together the missing ingredients, heated them in a saucepan, then after pushing back the mashed potatoes it was added to the meat mix then re-covered.

    A++++++++

  83. 5 stars
I just made this today and i can’t thank you enough for the recipe. It was delicious!!!!!!! The meat the mash EVERYRHINGGGG I never had mashpotatos with parm. I’m going to make this again.

  84. 5 stars
First time making this. It was EXCELLENT! I used Idahoan Roasted Garlic instant mash, but added the butter and parmesan to it. This is definitely a keeper! Very easy to make as well.

  85. 5 stars
This recipe is wonderful. I followed it completely and it did not disappoint. Definitely earned 5 stars.

  86. 5 stars
My go to dish. Shepards pie one easy recipe. Simple and delicious. My son called today asked what’s for dinner. He usually takes me to dinner. Today it was Shepards pie. Thanking for sharing.

    1. 4 stars
This recipe contained WAY too much fat for our food preferences, but Shepherd’s Pie did sound delicious… I followed the meat and veggies mixture recipe, then I only used 2 Tbsp of butter plus no half & half or parmesan cheese in the potato mixture (we like to top our Shepherd’s Pie with melted cheese instead) and it turned out fantastic! Thank you for providing a solid/basic foundation of a recipe that I could build my own less fat version from 🙂

    2. 5 stars
Awesome recipe for shepherds pie, dué to health concerns, I substituted mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes. It’s delicious!!!

    3. 5 stars
Thanks for your recipe, followed it pretty much to the t but tripled it for my big ol family. Recipe looked good, had the ingredients on hand, and you helped me get dinner on the table in a timely manner. It was real good and everyone went in for seconds. Thanks again!

  87. 5 stars
Family says this is their favorite version. I have made many different recipes, the verdict is in YUM. Made in my cast iron skillet.

  88. 5 stars
It’s become my favorite Shepher’ds Pie recipe. Be sure to use the parmesan cheese in the potatoes, it takes them to another level. (Real parmeson not kraft)

  89. 5 stars
Nevermind..I didn’t see where you mixed the veggies with the beef. Mom layered it separately but we really enjoyed it! Thanks for the recipe ☺️

  90. 5 stars
This was my first time trying to make a shepherd’s pie and it came out perfectly! Full of flavor and great aroma wafting through the air! I used ground turkey and chicken broth instead of beef. It was yumlicious! I had to make it two days in a row as it didn’t survive long in my house with my husband! Once he got his cornbread it was over!!! LOL

    1. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it was delicious!!! Very flavorful. I will double the recipe next time so we can have leftovers.

  91. 5 stars
This was easy and amazing, thank you! I cheated this round and used pre-made mashed potatoes (no judgment!), but next time I’m going to try the potato mixture. 😎

  92. 5 stars
    Brilliant. Perfect. Scrumptious. Heavenly. Comforting.
Definitely 5 stars for at least 5 adjectives that do not even come close to how much I love this dish and recipe.
When I make Shepherds Pie, this is the only recipe I use.
I only use lamb in my pies because I really think it pairs perfectly with the other ingredients and the flavor of the lamb brings the whole dish together.
    Simply wonderful.

  93. 5 stars
Wowww! Go ahead & make a double or triple recipe…cause it’s soooo good. Gourmet shepherds pie…and I’m a tough critic!

  94. 5 stars
Love this! The spice blend makes it so rich! I always add a bit of fish sauce anytime I use Worcestershire sauce to add some umami.

  95. 4 stars
Delicous pie, just a few things I omitted in the potato mixture- the cheese and the garlic powder.
I also did not add rosemary in the meat mixture, either.
I did find that 2 large potatoes were not enough, next time I will boil 3, I used a 9×9 non stick square pan.
I baked it at 350 for 40 minutes

    1. 5 stars
Maybe if you followed the recipe you too would be able to see why everyone rates it 5 stars except for you.
I’m just curious how one can objectively rate a recipe for taste when the recipe was not followed when making the dish.
Of course your resulting dish did not taste as good. But that is not the fault of the recipe, but rather you.
Perhaps the recipe should be rated 5 stars and give yourself 4 for your cooking.

  96. 5 stars
Love this recipe. The meat is seasoned perfectly. Made for the freezer, and baked from frozen at 350F for 90mins.

  97. 5 stars
This is a recipe I return to often! I’ve made with cauliflower mash on top in place of potatoes and I’ve made it with a mix of potato and cauliflower. Trying to sneak in more veggies. Love this recipe.

  98. 5 stars
The only recipe I use for Shepherds Pie. Our family go to for a comfort meal. Five stars!! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. One thing I add when I want an extreme boost of flavor is a splash of Pikkapeppa sauce to my bowl.

  99. 5 stars
This was so good! I added a little more seasoning, and cheese on top. I think ill add a little more tomato paste next time but that’s just because i enjoy the flavor more than some

  100. 5 stars
This is a terrific recipe! Easy to put together — Excellent results!
As a registered dietitian, I balked at the amount of butter and cream but after considering the serving size, I give it a thumbs up! 🙂
Give it a try, you will be happy you did

  101. 5 stars
I made this last night. What a complete, tasty and entirely satisfying meal. Oh My 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  102. 5 stars
This was delicious and so simple! Tasted for seasoning along the way and was able to tweak stuff ever so slightly and it came out PERFECT. Will make again!

    1. 5 stars
I love this recipe !!! I do not alter it much I just add a splash of wine when I cook the meat with the paste and broth:)

  103. 5 stars
Delicious. I’ve made Shepherds Pie before and felt it was rather bland. This was perfect. A big hit. In fact, my grandson is making again tonight for a pot luck.

  104. 5 stars
After serving this shepherd’s pie tonight I was asked if we could have it every week. I think the rich gravy and delicious seasoning are what make it so excellent.

    1. 5 stars
Really good! I did change a few minor things didn’t add rosemary as I’m not a fan of that spice. I didn’t have fresh onions so I used dried minced. And I used extra carrot instead of corn.

  105. Easy to follow recipe, using accessable ingredients. Added a little bit of red wine with the beef stock. Very good.

  106. 5 stars
I’ve tried many different recipes for Shepards Pie and this one is a VERY GOOD Recipe. It’s super fast and easy to make.
There’s a couple things that I altered, ingredients or techniques I learned from other recipes.

    1. I used Fresh Thyme & Rosemary. Noticeably Better flavoring & aroma’s.
    2. I added 1/4 Cup of Red Wine. After adding and fully blending the flour Steps.
    3. I added 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese to mashed potatoes as well as 1/2 cup of Parmesan & Asiago blend. VERY GOOD!
    4. For the Veggies, I used equal portions of fresh corn on the cob for the sweet flavors, Celery, carrots, & Frozen Peas 🫛

  107. 5 stars
Can you use fresh veggies? If so, would cooking time increase for their tenderness? Or would you steam prior to adding? Thanks!

  108. 5 stars
I made this shepard’s pie and it is awesome probably the best one I’ve ever made. I followed the recipe to the T. I used ground beef. Will definitely make again!

  109. 5 stars
This was super easy to assemble and the best shepherd’s pie dish out there. I am now rinsed in that I will no longer enjoy ordering this at restaurants and pubs since this one is so fabulous!

  110. 5 stars
👍🏻👍🏻Two thumbs up from my husband… it’s a great recipe and one we’ll do again!! The recipe was easy to follow and tasted delicious!

  111. 5 stars
Delicious and popular with the kids! I left the meat mixture in my cast iron skillet and added the potatoes on top.

    1. 5 stars
Great recipe for my 2nd attempt at Shepherds Pie. Used fresh carrots boiled to tender and boiled corn off the cob. Added fresh stewed green beans, sauteed onions and green peppers. No tomato paste and broth so it was a bit dry. More seasonings next time. Thank you Amanda Finks

  112. 5 stars
This is the best recipe and so easy to make! It has been added to my stable of favorite recipes and my family loves it!

    1. 5 stars
My husband highly appreciates this recipe for its simplicity and efficiency. Thumbs up all around.

  113. 5 stars
Real good! We ground our own beef and pork mixture. And used Costco pre made potatoes- I mixed butter and parm cheese in the potatoes while they heated up and then topped the whole pie with shredded cheese and a sprinkle of parm.

  114. Could I possibly make the meat mixture & the potato topping, then keep them separated in the frig a few hours, until I later baked the pie? I’m asking due to the heat! I often prep things & wait to bake them until late at night or very early in the morning. Thanks!

  115. 5 stars
I have made this recipe a hand full of times. I tweak it just for our family’s taste. Sometimes I cheat and add box potatoes. It always tastes yummy. Thank you for the recipe.

  116. 5 stars
I am a repeat offender when it comes to making this dish. Thank you for sharing, it is truly the best!

  117. 5 stars
Was really good. Didn’t remember liking Shepherds pie much. I used ketchup instead of tomato paste and beef gravy instead of broth. Added a little extra water to make more juicy. I will make again.

  118. Shepherd’s pie recipe is wonderful. Just discovered this website, and I think it will be my favorite

  119. I made this recipe for dinner tonight. Turned out great! We both loved it and we have left overs for tomorrow

  120. 5 stars
Absolutely loved this recipe! The flavors were so so good! Used ground chicken instead cause I like to do healthy 😁. Just wow!

  121. 5 stars
Nicely seasoned, well balanced variant of a tried and true recipe. I didn’t have to change anything and the results look great and taste marvelous.

  122. 5 stars
Simply fantastic recipe I normally just use extra flour instead of tomato paste and it makes it extra beefy!

  123. 5 stars
Ground Turkey for the WIN! My son is a super picky eater – we used ground turkey and with all the wonderful spices and flavors you couldn’t tell! This dish is an explosion of flavor – not just meat and potatoes! We did increase the meat and the potatoes (6) with other adjustments to increase it(broth etc)and did a 9 x 13 pan — it came out awesome! He’s taking the recipe back to college with him.

  124. 5 stars
AWESOME! I’m the new cook at home at 69 years old HA HA. All the critics loved it, just the way your instructions said. Next time I will make a double batch. No leftovers, BUMMER

  125. 5 stars
Perfection!!!! This recipe was absolutely delicious. My husband doesn’t like shepherds pie and didn’t want it for dinner, but he commented how flavorful and good this was. We have only tried versions with mashed potatoes/ unflavored meat/veggies with no gravy with piles of yellow cheese on top to make up for the lack of flavor underneath. Not with this recipe! No cheese required on top. The flavor of the meat was absolutely delicious. You get the hint of beef broth and Worcestershire and then that little bit of acid/ tomato paste. The season ratio was perfect. We didn’t have to add any salt and pepper once it was plated. The real Parmesan cheese mix into the mashed potatoes was awesome, and yes I used instant and it was still delicious. The other change I made was instead of frozen vegetables, I used a drained can of veg-all, it has peas, carrots, corn -it does have a few other vegetables, but they are completely cooked so they are fork tinder and worked perfectly in a pinch for this recipe. I have printed this out and added it to things my picky husband likes recipes stash. Thank you for sharing!! What a great recipe

  126. 5 stars
Anyone can make this fairly simple dish! With the reciepe that sticks to a meat and potatoes , savory type , this could be a go to kind of meal! Once your sitting and enjoying the robust flavors on your happy taste buds, look around and notice that the ones at your dinner table are impressed by your cooking talent! They literally think you spent all day slaving away !! Definitely will not be the
last time this recipe comes out!! 5 stars on this thewholesomedish.com!!

  127. 5 stars
We made this recipe and really liked it though we did make some changes. We used premade mashed potatoes, 2 containers) because we didn’t have potatoes to make mashed potatoes as well as ground turkey instead of beef or lamb. You use what ypu have on hand when your teenager starts making a recipe without checking if you have the ingredients on hand. We also substitutes a gluten free flour because we’re a gluten free household. We made a double batch and it was gone so quick…

  128. 5 stars
My first attempt at a more traditional (albeit wetter) Shepherds Pie. Major success at the house, fantastic recipe that is easy to follow, and with common ingredients. Thank you so much!!

  129. 5 stars
I have made this dish a couple of times, even my mom is crazy about this recipe. I’ve also Incorporated the ingredients to make meatloaf it makes awesome tasting meatloaf so thank you thank you thank you. This was definitely a well-served recipe

  130. 5 stars
So satisfying❤️❤️ Only had oregano and parsley, added a little smoked paprika. It was the best ever!!!

  131. 5 stars
Delicious and aromatic with the herbs in the beef mixture and the parm in the potatoes.
I made this in the instant pot with stew meat in place of ground beef and it was awesome. I will be saving this recipe and make it again for when company comes over.

  132. 5 stars
Overall a very solid recipe. Alterations: halved butter, swapped parmesan for fresh grated parmigiano reggiano, used mixed vegetables (corn, peas, carrots green beans), substituted ketchup for tomato paste (yes, it’s weird but try it).
    .

  133. 5 stars
I’ve never had or cooked Shepherds pie before. But I pulled it out of the oven not 20 minutes ago and have had my first bowl. It’s so good. I planned to make more but now I’m definitely making more. Great recipe easy to follow. Will be using again.

  134. 5 stars
Fantastic! I even forgot some of the ingredients in the potatoes because I got distracted… Still really good. Thank you for sharing!

  135. 5 stars
This was delicious!! I had to use canned peas and corn so I didn’t add any salt during cooking and it would be better with frozen but still delicious! I had leftover mashed potatoes I used just added the parmesan and garlic powder to it. Great way to use leftover potatoes! I cook for my mom and she ate everything on her plate. I will make again!!

  136. 5 stars
Simple and easy to follow. I didn’t have beef broth so I used a can of beef consommé and the same amount of water.
    It was delicious!

  137. 5 stars
Best recipe ever. I add mushrooms to the meat mixture and sauteed leeks to the mashed topping. I have
fresh rosemary growing in my garden that adds something special to pie. A 5 star recipe to work with.

  138. 5 stars
This is the best Shepard’s pie I have ever had. We really enjoyed it. I doubled it as I have two big guys to feed and they love left overs for work lunches. I topped it with shredded cheddar and wow!

  139. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! I add my own little tweaks here and there but the base is this recipe and it’s amazing!

  140. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe over a dozen times, and have had to start doubling the recipe just so we could have a couple leftover servings for lunch the next day. Try adding an extra tablespoon of Worcestershire for the zing! Thank you for posting this recipe!!

  141. 5 stars
Simply delicious! I make it even easier by using pre-made mashed potatoes and “zushing” them up with butter, cream and parm. I’m going to have to start doubling the amount…there’s never any leftovers! Thanks for such a great recipe 🙂

    1. 4 stars
I made this with lamb, it was tasty but I would definitely drain off the grease from the lamb next time..it was my first time making this and I thought it was a bit odd the recipe did not call for this but I followed it to the the letter except used fresh herbs. My husband loved it. We like lamb, I know it’s not for everyone.

  142. 5 stars
Just made it today. Followed the recipe pretty closely and it was delicious. I used lamb.
I divided the recipe into two foil containers and gave one to a friend.
Hope she enjoys it as much as we did.

    1. 5 stars
This was truly delicious, satisfying and is now a family favourite. I doubled it since everyone loves leftovers too and used a mix of ground lamb and beef. Thanks for sharing!

    2. 5 stars
The first time I made this recipe it tasted so good. I hope with the substitutions work out.great recipe. 5 stars for sure thank you

  143. 5 stars
The best shepards pie! Was a hit with everyone in the family and that includes 4 kids! Definitely will be making again and again! Added to my recipe box.

    1. 5 stars
Amazing, my favorite Shepherd’s pie recipe yet. And I even halved the butter and drained the meat grease. 🙂 those potatoes are fantastic! Can’t believe how low calorie this is. Thank you!

  144. 5 stars
I made this tonight, and it was spectacular!! My British boyfriend ate 3 big servings of it. Definitely keeping this in my dinner rotations. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful recipe!

    1. 5 stars
I’d never had Shepherd’s Pie before so I was on the fence and couldn’t decide on a recipe, but your comment was all the recommendation I needed. Thanks so much for posting! 😉

  145. 5 stars
This was delicious! My boyfriend added a little more spice where he thought necessary and it was absolutely amazing. Will be saving this recipe and making again. Also made in a cast iron pan… would recommend!

  146. 5 stars
I make it vegetarian by substituting the meat and broth with Beyond Beef and vegetable bouillon broth respectively—absolutely stunning! Plant-based substitutes also work well for the potatoes if you want to make it fully vegan 🙂

  147. 5 stars
Excellent recipe for Shepherd’s Pie. We used the Salty Marshmallows instant pot recipe for Mashed potatoes- super fast and easy. Both recipes together are the bomb. Will use these two for now on. Thank you for posting the recipe!! Love it

  148. 5 stars
My first time making Shepard’s Pie. Used ground beef. The seasoning is very delicious! I made it for a church sister who is in the hospital. Saved a little bit for me. Will use remainder meat to put in ramekins. Just have to make a little bit more potatoes. By the way, I used instant potatoes! Tastes great! Thanks for sharing this recipe. I saved it for later reference. 🙂

  149. 5 stars
So good. Will make it again and again, maybe even for my book club when my turn comes again. For them I would double it.

  150. 5 stars
Excellent! My entire Family lives it and is now on the monthly rotation.
I doubled the recipe for my Family and cookeb in a 13×9 baking dish and it was perfect

  151. 5 stars
This is very good! My boyfriend ate 2/3 of the recipe in one sitting. It’s also very easy to accomplish, even the mashed potato topping! I’ll make it again.

  152. 5 stars
So I added Red Wine accordingly to the amount of batches i was making thT day, 1 cup if making 1 batch, 2 if 2 on so so don’t panic the alcohol will cook out but takes it to another level….Also I split beef/ lamb, the most important part is to let it sit in those juices for at least 2 or longer, before putting combining everything, also I tried crushed chips once and the family love it…

  153. 4 stars
Loved the flavour of this recipe! I’ve made it twice now and the first time I found the potatoes to be too greasy like there was too much butter. Not sure if I just didn’t cook enough potatoes or because I’m in Canada our metric tablespoons are bigger than imperial ones so the second time I made it I halved the amount of butter and they turned out much better but still had great flavour. This will definitely be my go to recipe for Shepherds Pie from now on.

    1. 5 stars
Delicious. I made this recipe with deer burger meat and simmered meat in marsala cooking wine. A perfect recipe.

  154. 5 stars
I use this recipe all of the time. To make it lower carb, more keto/diabetic friendly, I substitute coconut flour for AP flour, cauliflower rice for potatoes, heavy whipping cream for half & half and only use1/2 the butter (the recipe amount is perfect for potatoes, but too much for cauliflower rice).

    1. 5 stars
Wonderful recipe husband loved it which speaks volumes. Simple ingredients and easy to put together. Delicious and will make again!

  155. 5 stars
I made this tonight and it was the absolute BOMB.COM So stinkin good!! I tend to go a little heavy on the tomato elements and made mine with ground lamb. This was really epic

  156. 5 stars
I took some leftovers. Mashed potatoes, beef and added some cheese to it. It turned out good. Leftovers make the best and easiest Sheppard pie. Plus it’s filling

  157. 5 stars
I made this for a family get together. It was so good! I doubled the recipe because of the number of people. I made and assembled it the night before. Because it had been refrigerated, I baked it on 350° 45 minutes to 1 hour. The meat (I used ground beef) and the potato layer were both flavorful. The amount of liquid in both layers was just right- moist but not soupy. I was surprised there was parmesan cheese in the potato layer but it was quite good. I followed the recipe exactly and it was just right. I highly recommend this recipe.
Thank you for the yummy recipe!

  158. This was very good. It is the first time I’ve made it and I am 75. Lol it was relatively easy to make and very inexpensive. I wish I had made this when my children were small. I know they would have loved it.

  159. 5 stars
I really like this recipe, but I confess I buy Bob Evans mashed potatoes for the topping. They are delicious and what a time saver. I’ll be making this for a group dinner next week. I love that I can make it ahead, then pop it in the oven, with a salad and some rolls! Delicious!

  160. 5 stars
This was delicious! I just wanted to comment that this recipe as-is is not remotely enough for 6 adults, lol. I doubled it and it was a hit.

  161. 5 stars
After trying several shepherds pie recipes, this is the one we settled on. We’ve made it with beef, lamb, and a combo of the two. We double it every time but otherwise make it exactly as directed. Great recipe that we all love!

  162. 5 stars
10/10 this is delicious. It’s on our rotation. Easy to make, simple ingredients. The whole family loves this, even my husband who doesn’t like shepards pie. Only thing I do differently is drain the ground beef.

  163. 5 stars
I am 53 years old and I have never eaten Shepherds Pie, let alone make it & bake it. All I have to say is OMFG !!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND THANK YOU. I wish you happiness and good health always.

  164. 5 stars
I randomly found this recipe while looking for a dinner idea today. This was so delicious and I will definitely make it again. The seasoning choices made this dish so good and the addition of Parmesan cheese to the potatoes was a nice touch. My family loved this.

  165. 5 stars
Omg delicious 😋 made exactly as posted except a smidge more Parmesan in the potato!
    Thank you for this recipe!

  166. 5 stars
Made this tonight for our neighbors and us….I was told it was the BEST shephard’s pie EVER. I didn’t have rosemary on hand so I substituted “Italian Seasoning” for both the rosemary and thyme. I also am not a big fan of the peas and carrots, so I used 1 cup of frozen corn and 1/2 a cup of frozen peas and carrots. The mashed potato topper was well worth making, I almost used boxed mashed potatoes but am SO glad I didn’t! SUPER DELISH! Thanks for a great recipe!

I just made this. Followed the directions for meat mixture exactly. I used family style Bob Evans’s Sam’s added the Parmesan to the potatoes. Topped with shredded cheddar and paprika. Honestly it was delicious!

  168. 5 stars
When I made it I put the garlic in after I sautéed the onion. I also mixed the flour with the beef broth and tomato paste and blended them together before I added it to the pan. I did not want to add flour to the hot pot.

  169. 5 stars
This recipe came out great. The amount of spices is perfect. I had never made shepherd’s pie before and it was delicious.

  170. 5 stars
Wow! That was probably the best Shepherds Pie I’ve ever had! Absolutely delicious and so easy to make. My husband couldn’t get enough of it!

  171. 5 stars
    Awesome recipe for large family!
Personally, I would have omitted the broth since I enjoyed the robust flavor prior to adding it, but my family loved the final result per the recipe instructions. I’ve never made creamer homemade mashed potatoes, so I will continue using the mashed potatoe recipe regularly moving forward.

  172. 5 stars
really love this dish, will definitely make it again, I added sour cream to the mashed potatoes, also used fresh parsley

  173. I followed the recipe to a T, but added some fresh diced mushrooms with tbl spoon of vinegar. She said it was great. She wants me to make my stuffed meat loaf again too.

  174. 5 stars
I made this recipe tonight, doubling it due to 3 teens in my house with a few tweaks and I have to say it is the best one I have ever had. I have made many varieties of Shepherds Pie. I am not a huge fan of thyme or rosemary so I reduced the amount by half, added chunked up mushrooms and I couldn’t find frozen peas and carrots so I just got a frozen mixed vegetable that did include green beans. The mushrooms made the sauce on the meat so savory and delish! Making it again for sure! Excellent recipe!

  175. 5 stars
I’ve made this dish many times and keep returning. I make it for my daughter to eat for lunch the whole week since she swims every day for 2 hrs. We all love it! Mom, dad, teen and preteen!

  176. 5 stars
This is a great recipe.first time I used russet and I used idaho gold potatoes this time and they made a creamier topping and doesn’t take as long to cook. Also didn’t have beef broth so I dissolved 3 bullion cube in a cup of hot water. This recipe is very versatile you can really make it with what your family likes

  177. 5 stars
made this May 31st. Simple, fun, and easy. My dad and I ate the entire thing last night, it was incredible. I will be making this recipe again.

  178. 5 stars
I made this Shepherd’s Pie recipe for my son and I Easter Sunday. We thought it was very good. I used beef and followed the recipe except the rosemary and thyme I used were fresh (1 TBLS each) though the parsley was dried (1 tsp). The meat mixture came together very nicely and not overly saucy. I used a 7×11 pyrex baking dish and about 10 minutes before it was done I did need to place a baking sheet on the rack below to catch a few drips, but not a big deal. Would definitely make again!

  179. 5 stars
Wasn’t hard to assemble and extremely tasty. I may reduce the amount of butter I use next time. But it was so good!

  180. 5 stars
My husband and I love this recipe and have made it multiple times with ground lamb. I would recommend flipping the recipe though and making the potato part first and then pre heat the oven and start the meat portion. It just seems to flow better for me and you can prep the meat part while the potatoes cook.

  181. 5 stars
Made with London Broil chipped up small, utilized all other ingredients as advised, cooked as advised. It produced a stellar Shepherd’s Pie. It will be a staple in our household moving forward (ie: Easter Dinner). Thank you for sharing!

  182. 5 stars
This was an awesome version of the world’s best comfort food. The only thing I did different was boiled a few more potatoes and added a bottom layer in addition to the top layer of mashed potatoes. And I had no parsley but it wasn’t missed, more of a topping garnish. So good!!

  183. 5 stars
This was so delicious and I was really pleased as my last few internet recipes were lack lustre. Yay for a winner!! The only thing I added was a bit of cayenne to the meat to add some pizzazz. Just transcribed into my cookbook for life.
    Thank you!

  184. 5 stars
Love this meal! I’ve been making this for decades and this was hands down, the best one yet! I added a teaspoon of chili powder and subbed the peas & carrots for green beans, had to sub the rosemary for sage cuz I was out -and I even had a second helping, something I never do. Fantastic! Thank you for this great recipe!

  185. 5 stars
Delicious! I had to make a few changes due ingredient substitutions. I used ketchup & salsa in place of tomato paste. Also, I was limited to canned veggies so used corn & xtra green green beans. I also added about 1/2 C shredded Mexican cheese to potatoes along with the Parmesan cheese. It was an absolute knock-out in my home. I also used a powdered mashed potatoes as all I had.
Thank you for sharing an amazing recipe !!!! Definitely will be n

  186. 4 stars
A good recipe but recipe dies not state to drain grease from browned chipped meat. Personally, I prefer to layer the vegetables rather than mix them into the chopped meat. Used more veggies that way. I place mine under the broiler to sliightly brown the potatoes. Overall very good. Seasoning spot on.

  187. 5 stars
This Shepards Pie recipe is absolutely devine! I’ve made it several times and its flavor is off the charts! There’s a vessel of it in my oven as I’m typing this!

  188. 5 stars
Besides the dried parsley, I followed this recipe to a T. It was one of the tastiest things I’ve had this year. Don’t skip the Worschestire sauce.

  189. 5 stars
A bit of a process, but worth every step! Everyone of the picky eaters at my house loved it! Only complaint is that there weren’t any leftovers. Will double this next time and do a 13X9.

  190. 5 stars
I made this last week for my family and it was gone in no time! Absolutely delicious! I did not add anything extra and followed the recipe exactly as given. Next time I make it, I am doubling the recipe for our family of 4. Thank you so much for sharing this one!

  191. 5 stars
Great recipe. Takes a bit of time to put together, but worth it. I used fresh carrots and replaced dried herbs with fresh herbs and added bay leaf.

  192. 5 stars
This recipe is the finest recipe of all time me and my mom we cook this in less than a half hour and my mom loved it so much that when she finally made it home she was wanting the recipe so she can make it for herself and since then I have shared this recipe with many other people this is a really good recipe to share with your friends family and Neighbors thank you so much for this content because it’s the best one and we love it

  193. 5 stars
Made this yesterday. My husband, our two boys and I absolutely devoured it. Didnt have rosemary or parsley but still was really really great. 10 out of 10 for taste and easy to prepare. Thank you .

  194. 5 stars
we are Whole30 so i used ground turkey instead of beef, coconut milk instead of half and half. it was awesome!

  195. 5 stars
One of the best things I’ve ever eaten… When it’s cold out, this is the ultimate stick to your ribs comfort food. Simple to make, but PERFECT. I made it exactly to the recipe. Next time I will try with fresh carrots, peas, etc. I omitted the corn, as I’m not a fan. I will also try fresh herbs next time as well. But what a treat. Will definitely be a monthly meal now!

  196. 5 stars
My cousin and I unknowingly made the same dinner dish to send over to a family member. The family member texted me to let me know this and went on to say how much more delicious this shepherd’s pie recipe was over the one my cousin made. The flavors and seasonings in this recipe were excellent. I made some for my home as well and my husband couldn’t stop eating it. I was worried at first with all the ingredients it would be over seasoned, but it all worked well together. I’ll be putting this recipe into my dinner rotations.

  197. 5 stars
Absolutely awesome recipe!. We loved it and I’ll surely be adding it to “go 2’s! Many Thanks Amanda!

  198. 5 stars
Delicious! I made it vegan by using Impossible burger. Made my usual mashed potatoes with vegan butter and plant milk. Tasted fantastic. I forgot to buy the carrots and corn, so I will definitely add those next time. Also, didn’t have tomato paste but I subbed a tablespoon of BBQ sauce. Can’t wait to have leftovers tonight. Thanks for sharing!

  199. 5 stars
This recipe is as good as everyone says it is! I had a some guys come over so I did a double batch. I didn’t have any thyme and I didn’t put in the peas, carrots or the corn. I added a layer of sharp cheddar across the top when there was 15 minutes left in the oven. One of the guys said it was the best he has ever had. It is really flavorful! I was debating the rosemary and parsley but I am glad I added them! They make so much flavor!

  200. 5 stars
I made this recipe and it’s absolutely delicious, 5 stars. One thing you might want to check is for issues scaling the recipe. I scaled this recipe 3x, and it still says use 2 potatoes which I know can’t be right. Thank you!

  201. 5 stars
I was looking for something to make with ground beef other than my go-to’s spaghetti, or chili. This was the perfect recipe, so easy and delicious!

  202. 5 stars
We really liked it but thought it was a little heavy on the thyme. Next time I’ll cut back to half teaspoon.

  203. 5 stars
EXCELLENT – most flavourful Shepherd’s Pie I’ve every made. I left out the Rosemary as I’m not a fan, and used 2% milk rather than half and half in the potatoes, but the rest was as printed. My family loved it. Also, I made one using venison rather than beef, so added a bit more oil for browning the meat, and vegetable broth rather that beef broth. Plate licking good!

  204. 5 stars
Made this for St Patricks Day ’24. Everyone loved it. Im saving it as my go to for Shepherds pie.

  205. I made this yesterday for a St. Patrick’s day party. People raved about how good it was, “better than my grandmothers”, was a comment! Wow I did use fresh herbs and Trader Joe’s spring peas.

    1. 5 stars
Loved it! The meat mixture was delicious and the Parmesean cheese in the mashed potatoes made it even more tasty!

    2. 5 stars
I’m vegetarian so I used veggie ground beef and skipped the cooking. I used a veggie beef flavored mushroom gravy with added red wine and frozen mixed vegetables. For convenience, I added a beaten egg and snipped some fresh parsley into store bought mashed potatoes. I made 10 mini pies in disposable tins, that turned out great.

    3. Hi, can you please recommend the best size of the casserole to bake it in if I want to triple the recipe? Thank you!

    4. 5 stars
This was a very good easy to make sheppards pie. I doubled the recipe and used 1 pound of ground lamb and 1 pound of grassfed ground beef. I made it in a 4 quart ninja skillet and it was a perfect fit. (I used 3 pounds of potatoes) it almost went to the top, but did not boil over. Perfect!

    5. The bottom part of the recipe is missing the vegetables, I’m guessing they go in on top of the meat, but before the mashed potatoes?

    1. 5 stars
I made this the lazy way :), with premade mashed potatoes; I added butter and 1 cup of white cheddar cheese to the potatoes. Ground lamb, a bag of mixed vegitables of corn, peas, carrots and green beans. It was a fairly quick meal that tasted like I was in the kitchen slaving away. I sprinkled the flour on my top and brought it to the table with a smile. 😉
      It was devoured entirely!

    2. 5 stars
I used frozen mixed vegetables and can corn due to not having the frozen peas, carrots and corn. Turn out great!!!

  206. 5 stars
Everyone in my family loved this! And that is rare. High calorie recipe, but it tastes that much better because of it!

    1. 5 stars
Made this tonight but instead made roasted garlic cauliflower mashed “faux potatoes” (have a diabetic in the house so we sub a lot of bad carbs for good carbs) and it was phenomenal.

    2. 5 stars
This recipe for Shepherd’s Pie is absolutely the best! I made this for my family (had to double the recipe) everyone went back for seconds. They were still talking about it days later which has never happened before with any of my meals.

    3. 5 stars
      Fantastic recipe!! ❤️💕💗
Second time making it. It comes out beautifully every time. 👍
Thanks for sharing such a great dish!!
I am grateful for you and your delicious recipes🙏

      Thank you 😊
      Anna L.

  207. 5 stars
Very good! Great flavor! I did add more onions and extra cheese ! Did add mozzarella cheese and Parmesan on top

    1. 5 stars
Made this on St. Patrick’s Day. My family loved it! This shepherds, pie is better than the one I used to make.. It’s a keeper:)

    2. 5 stars
I’ve eaten Shephards pie my entire life, and this is the most flavourful I’ve had. Craveable meat filling with buttery potatoes. I skip the parm and add cheddar to the top, making it brown and crispy.

  208. Made for the first time tonight. Followed recipe except only one clove garlic. It was delicious! Husband wanted a third helping! Loved the seasons especially the thyme and rosemary flavors. I also used fresh parsley instead of dried since I had it. Will make this again for sure!

  209. 5 stars
Thanks Amanda, great recipe . . . . BTW : I substituted London Broil (chipped up small) instead of the ground beef. Yummy!!!

  210. 5 stars
I love this recipe so much. I make it vegetarian by using Impossible Burger and veggie broth, and my non-veg friends have always raved about it!

  211. 5 stars
Made this for a Sea Shanty Party aka St Patrick’s Day. It was delicious and casserole dish was scraped clean. I will definitely make again.

  212. 5 stars
All the ratios were spot on. Only thing I did different was ADD 1 big fat leek in addition to the onion. Delicious!!

  213. this recipe was great! so delicious. If you don’t want to deal with the tomato paste and flour you can just add some tomato sauce

      1. 5 stars
This isn’t a substitution I would make. Tomato paste is much thicker, and the flour is used to thicken the gravy. If all you have is sauce, I’d triple the amount, and still use the flour. Jmo.

  214. 5 stars
I used Bob Evans mashed potatoes as a quick cheat and added garlic and parmesan only. Great recommendation to prepare ahead of time! Thanks for the recipe!

  215. 5 stars
It is pi day 3/14 and so of course we have to have pie for dinner and what better pie than shepherd’s pie — made with lamb. Yummy and easy recipe. I used fresh carrots and frozen green beans, corn and peas and used chicken broth rather than beef — came out beautifully. (oh and I do it in a 9 inch pie plate for pie day.

    1. 5 stars
I think this was my best Shepard’s pie yet! I didn’t have rosemary and I did add some Sazon to the ground beef. Thank you for this delicious recipe!

  216. 5 stars
Just made this. Very tasty. Will definitely make again. I did replace Parmesan cheese with cheddar Jack as I didn’t have shredded Parmesan. Also used white onion which I prefer over yellow.; and cornstarch over flour. I like all recipes that are labeled “easy” and this was.

  217. 5 stars
Amazing dish! It’s a keeper for sure! So much flavour. I adjusted the recipe a little bit as I didn’t have a lb of ground beef, slightly less. Followed it with the same ingredients. I used only a tablespoon for oil and adjusted butter with less than half of what was suggested for the potatoes. I didn’t have half and half but I had 18% cream and used it instead. Thank you for sharing it!

  218. I made this based on reviews, but also changed it up a bit: instead of just ground beef I used a 50/50 of ground brisket and sirloin, then topped the dish off with shredded sharp cheddar. I have 3 boys age 11-20 and they loved it! Brisket is the way to go

  219. 5 stars
Made this for the first time and the family loved it! Wont be the last time I make it! Love ❤️

  220. 5 stars
We really enjoyed this and didn’t fiddle with the recipe. Haven’t made cottage pie in ages and found this one very tasty (enough to make it x 3 to freeze).

  221. 5 stars
I tried this recipe tonight and it was so easy and huge hit, my family loved it! Best Shepard’s pie recipe that I’ve tried so far.

  222. 4 stars
I made this tonight. It was pretty good although I would have liked it to have more of a slight gravy sauce to it. Any suggestions? I will definitely try it again in that manner.

    1. 5 stars
If you want to add a little more moisture to dish. I always buy some Heinz beef gravy to add as needed.

  223. 5 stars
Delicious. Underestimated on my potatoes so I didn’t have enough mashed potatoes. Luckily, I had some leftover from a few days ago from another meal but everything was just perfect. It was really good. Thank you so much.

  224. 5 stars
This recipe is truly excellent. I followed the recipe almost exactly, just used fresh carrots instead of frozen, which I sautéed with the onions to soften. flavors came together so nicely and complemented each other perfectly. My kids had seconds and the tiny serving left over was *chefs kiss* delicious the next day. Will definitely add this to my regular rotation!

**My only recommendation is to soak up any extra grease before thickening, so it doesn’t seep up into the potatoes, but I’m sure that’s dependent on what meat you use.

  225. 5 stars
First time making Shepard’s pie and it was sooo delicious. Made it by request for a birthday dinner and everyone raved about it!

  226. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! The best recipe for shepherds pie I have ever used. Beats all others by a country mile. My husband raved over it! Definitely my new standby for shepherds pie.

  227. 5 stars
Loved it! I just used corn because it was all that I had, but it was great. Reminded me of my Mom’s. The mashed potatoes were so tasty!

  228. 5 stars
Easy to make. I made it with ground lamb. I absorbed most of the lamb drippings with paper towels before putting the meat mixture into a lightly greesed pan. I also used frozen green beans instead of peas.

  229. 5 stars
I love this Shepherd’s Pie. Best ever. Have made it several times and always with lamb and fresh cooked . I think the herbs (rosemary, thyme and Parsley) make the dish.

  230. 5 stars
Wow! This was good. The only complaint I got was that my son couldn’t get it in his mouth fast enough. Great recipe! Thank you!

  231. The best recipe out there. We just loved it. I did do traditional way and used some lamb. Makes for a more velvety texture to the meat.

  232. 5 stars
Thanks for the recipe. I used left over meatloaf and doctored up some store bought mashed potatoes and added in seasonings as in your recipe. My husband has been wanting shepherd’s pie from when he worked over on the north east coast

  233. 5 stars
Super tasty and easy to make. I sautéed my onion in butter and added a little more Worcestershire sauce and Parmesan cheese than was called for. Great recipe!

  234. 5 stars
Tonight was awesome.. we used the recipe and was stunned by how great the flavor is.. it was definitely perfect. The family dug right in..
We will definitely use this again…the spices and ingredients was spot on.. thank you for the recipe we all loved it..😁🙏😊💕

  235. 5 stars
100%%%% delicious!!! Made this is it was a hit. My son said it was the best sheperd’s pie he has ever tasted loll my man loved it so much he had to share with his coworkers☺️recommend big time

  236. 5 stars
This is so good! I have made it many times and it’s one of my favorites. As another commenter suggested, I have started straining the meat after it’s cooked. It’s a little greasy, otherwise.

  237. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! One of my absolute favorite recipes of all time. And, if I think it tasted good the first day, it was 100 times more delicious the second day.

  238. 5 stars
Great recipe! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Added an egg yoke to the potatoes making them a little bit richer & used fresh vegetables but besides that, followed the recipe as instructed. I will definitely be making this again. Thanks!

  239. 5 stars
This came out excellent, didn’t have any thyme or garlic powder on hand but I subbed that for garlic salt for the potatoes without adding regular salt, I’ll just need to remember the thyme next time but the meat filling was still delicious, also put a bit of shredded cheese on top before tossing it in the oven.

Didn’t bother measuring the salt/pepper/olive oil, just need enough oil to get a coating on the pan and salt/pepper I used to my preference, at the end of the day I’ll be making this one again easily and can probably come up with some good variations with this as the base.

  240. 5 stars
Fabulous recipe! I make it a lot with no changes. Especially like the specific measurements– as in 1 cup of onions instead of 1 medium.

  241. 5 stars
From New Orleans, where we enjoy our food well seasoned this recipe is Absolutely Delicious. ⚜️
Also, it’s a very convenient dish for Mardi Gras guest. 💜💚💛

    1. 5 stars
This one’s easy to make gluten and dairy free. First of all, just thicken with corn starch (there are other thickeners that are gluten free). For the potatoes, I use 2/3 potatoes and 1/3 steamed cauliflower (in steamer, potatoes on the bottom and cauliflower in the steamer). I then mix the cauliflower with an immersion hand-held blender and mash the potatoes separately, then join together. Season. There is no need for milk or cream because the cauliflower has more water content and keeps the potatoes lighter and fluffier. This is the only way that I prepare mashed potatoes. Added bonus–no one knows there is cauliflower and you’re adding vitamins!

    2. 5 stars
Cornstarch can be used in place of the flour using the same measurement. The difference is cornstarch HAS to be dissolved in COLD water first, then added to the mixture.

I have had okay results using coconut milk instead of the half n half and ghee in place of the butter (but that might not work with some diets.) I don’t have an answer for a cheese substitute as I haven’t found one I like

      Good luck

  242. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe multiple times and it’s delicious! It’s easy to make and uses ingredients I almost always have on hand, so no special trip to the store. It’s a family favorite and a staple in my dinner meals!

  243. 5 stars
The best ever shepherd’s pie I have ever made. Thank you for this wonderful recipes I have made it numerous times and it’s always a hit 💕

  244. 5 stars
I had a general idea of how shepherds pie is made but I knew I was missing something. I looked up a recipe and landed here. This is delicious! Printing the recipe for my permanent collection and adding to my normal rotation of dinners. Thanks so much. God bless🩷

  245. 5 stars
My family wants this on a regular basis after tonight. Great blend of spices and tasty potatoes. Very savory meal.

  246. 5 stars
I made this and it was so yummy! I cheated a bit and used premade mashed potatoes. I added the parmesan and a splash of cream, warmed them up a bit to make them spreadable and it worked great. I’m making a double batch for Sunday dinner today!

  247. 5 stars
This recipe is absolutely amazing! I make this dish almost weekly it is that good! I’m allergic to peas so I just use carrots and corn and it’s great. Highly recommend this recipe! In fact I’m on here now because I’m about to make it for dinner (and yes, I made it last week, too) 🙂 So yummy!!

  248. 5 stars
My significant other LOVES this recipe! He told me it’s the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe ever! I use diced fresh carrots and leave out the peas. I used 1 teaspoon oregano after I ran out of dried rosemary while recently making it againand it turned out fine. Highly recommended recipe!

  249. 5 stars
How would you bake this after you freeze it ? Thanks ! I’ve used this recipe before and love it so I want a little stash on the side.

  250. 5 stars
DELICIOUS….Quick and easy to make. I love that you use simple ingredients that I always have on hand. I have made this numerous times and it is always a family favorite. Thank You Amanda for a truly wonderful recipe.

  251. 5 stars
Great. Made it a few times. Subbed the potato for sweet potato and ground beef for turkey. Spices in the meat work great in turkey too.

  252. 5 stars
So delicious! I altered it to make it vegan so I used beyond beef, better than bouillon veggie base, oat milk and plant based butter. Also no parm cheese. It was amazing!!! Thank you for this delicious recipe.

    1. 5 stars
So basically, you didn’t make this recipe.

I must say though, the recipe, above, the one the author gave us, is truly a masterpiece.

  253. 5 stars
This is just the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I’ve ever made and/or eaten. Have played around with additions i.e. 2 Tablesoons of ketchup, a splash of red wine, using other vegetables, etc., but this original, basic recipe is great!!! We love it. 🩷

  254. 5 stars
Very delicious, I’m a single man; I made this for my dinner today and I’ve already had 4 servings. I’m going to make this tomorrow to divide into two servings and then put them into the freezer for a later day. Thanks for the recipe,

  255. 5 stars
This was my first shepherd’s pie I’ve ever made and the only recipe I will use— it’s that delicious!
After making four times now, the only thing I change up is to increase the sauce ingredients because I like the extra “sauciness.” Beef and veggie mixture I leave as written and increase the “wet” ingredients- again, personal preference for extra sauce. This is so good! Thank you for sharing!

  256. 5 stars
This was incredibly delicious. My husband and I enjoyed it very much and plan to share with friends and make again. Easy to follow and reg-u-lar ingredients that I didn’t cringe at cost of. Flavor profile was spot on. Thank you! It’s nice to have a cool weather dish.

  257. 5 stars
I have been making shepherds pie for years. This recipe is by far the best. I used ground turkey. Delicious!

  258. 5 stars
Thank you for providing your recipe! I have cooked without a recipe, and the worcestershire, tomato paste and flour were definitely the missing ingredients. My family agreed this “pie” was DEFINTELY better.
We are full and satisfied tonight!

  259. 5 stars
I made this with ground venison and it was awesome! Next time, I’ll add more corn, per my 12-year old’s request.

  260. 5 stars
I made this with minced lamb .. and did it in a large glass pan (did the 6 person recipe) .. so it was an equal layer of meat/veg moisture with the potatoes on top. Perfect wedge, with a nice side salad. As a Type 1 Diabetic who likes to try to make yummy recipes to keep blood sugars in a good Time in Range .. this is going to be part of my go to recipe for family. I cut up the remaining portions and they’re in the freezer for reheating for times I’m in a rush!

  261. 5 stars
The Shepherds pie recipe is simply delicious. This is the third time I have made this recipe and it always comes out perfect. This is a family favorite and wonderful to have on a cold winter’s night.

  262. 5 stars
I used impossible ground product instead of beef. I used butter instead of olive oil. I used vegetable broth instead of beef broth. I doubled the recipe.
My daughter told me to make this anytime and she couldn’t tell it wasn’t beef.
I found the seasonings amazing. I did use Parmesan/romano mix. But loved that it wasn’t cheddar. I love cheddar but appreciated a different cheese.
Will make again. Recommend!!! Thank you.

  263. 5 stars
This is absolutely delicious and was a total hit with my family! Thank you! Question – do you have suggestions to make a lower calorie version? Thank you so much

  264. 5 stars
This is the BEST shepherd’s pie I’ve ever tasted and I’ve tasted many. Everyone asks for this recipe. Pretty much on the weekly rotation during winter months. Thank you!

Amazing flavour, but would recommend that the potatoes be started first, to cut down on prep time. 😀

This recipe was AMAZING!!!!!! 10/5☆. 3 teens and a 7 year old gobbled this up all gone. Very happy family

  268. Unbelievable! Made 2 of them as one was for my in-laws: Mom phoned me immediately after supper to rave about it and asked me to make it for them again EXACTLY like that. The cook at the bar we were at asked for some. The Parmesan in the potatoes are key and I added a cup or two of cauliflower. Didn’t tell them that. 😎

This recipe was fantastic. I’m a sucker for a good Shepard’s Pie. Super easy recipe to follow. Only thing I would do slightly different is add more veggies but that is a personal preference I love lots Of veggies in my stews and pies. Anyways, if you’re on the fence use my review to make your final decision. You won’t regret it. *I didn’t have frozen carrots on hand so used fresh carrots threw them in when the recipe asked. Initially was afraid the carrots wouldn’t soften but they do during the bake.

I have been searching for a Shepherd’s Pie recipe for months. I printed your recipe yesterday and decided to give it a try. I had two 12-year-old girls to feed and wanted something different to feed them. I was taking a huge chance because one of them didn’t like the food on her plate to touch each other. She eats one item at a time, never mixing flavors. I cook food so that the flavors complement each other and are to be eaten together. This recipe was exactly what I wanted in an American version of Shepherd’s Pie. The girls gobbled up their portions and absolutely loved the dish almost as much as I did. Thank you for taking the time to create a superb dish.
    Sincerely, Rebecca H.

Made this dish last week with fresh carrots, minced beef and garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. Tasted great!

l made too few potatoes, and in my meat mixture l used too much meat (1 1/2 lbs).. and so when out of the oven, it was all too soupy .. but it was my first try!
.. So l took out a serving, spread it out, made more potatoes and re-baked it.
Will let you know, it’s still in there!
    lt tastes very good mmmm

Outstanding!!I didn’t have Rosemary or Parsley, but it didn’t matter. I used 1 1/2 lbs ground chuck, canned vegies, and Bob Evans mashed potatoes. It turned out great!!

This is the best shepherds pie I have ever eaten. It’s so savory!!! My fiancé loved it! The only thing I might change is draining the meat before adding seasonings etc. It was very oily but besides that a wonderful meal. This will be my go to recipe from now on. Thanks!

Outstanding recipe, my second go around with it. I went with a bolder approach and added a little more garlic to both the potatoes and meat mix. I also used a little less rosemary and we served with dinner rolls. Next time I’m going to try it with a nice moist cornbread for the side. SO BOMB, thank you for this!

Made a double batch of this recipe with my 12 year old granddaughter today while her grandfather, parents and siblings watched football and ran around the house. She followed the instructions to the letter, except I cut down on the oil a bit. It turned out DELICIOUS! She was so proud of her superb accomplishment! Great recipe to make with a child or grandchild that is old enough to be safely in the kitchen. The expression of pure joy as everyone praised her dish was priceless!

Delicious! Made this for family guests during the holidays and it was a big hit. They said it was the BEST shepherds pie they had ever tasted. I did substitute ready-made Bob Even’s mashed potatoes, instead of making them from scratch and it was delicious…quick and easy, too. Definitely will be making this recipe again!

We loved this version of Shepherd’s Pie, and watched Escape to the Country while enjoying our dinner and felt very cozy and English. I don’t like the reviews where people say all the things they changed, so I won’t go into that (it’s just about what I had on hand etc). I liked working with the instructions and everything came together perfectly.

This was easy enough to cook that my elementary aged nieces were able to help. It was so successful at the dinner table that my 98 yr old Grandma had seconds.

This thing slaps. I made it like three times, will make it again. I made some slight alterations to the recipe when I made it, I didn’t have rosemary or thyme, so I used sage and oregano as spices, I used whole milk in the potatos, and fresh carrots and canned peas for the veggies, still tasted absolutely amazing. I will say, if you do use fresh carrots, cut them small so that they cook throughly.

Either way, we love this at the house.

My mom made this dish growing up but it was super basic. THIS recipe is great! My husband just said I need to start a Favorite Recipe book for our family and put this in it.

This shepherds pie was delicious! We couldn’t stop eating it and I was glad I made a little extra to last us a couple extra meals. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us!

Perfect recipe…however, I skipped the peas and carrots and mostly layered some corn and a miniscule amount into the meat mixture. Thanks for the tips to make more flavorful than I….(My mom) make it.

  287. Have you tried freezing it before baking?
I am making double the recipe and there’s no way we’ll eat this all. I have one dish in the oven and the other one assembled.. just not sure about the mashed potatoes being okay to freeze.
