The Best Classic Shepherd’s Pie – AKA Shepards Pie or Cottage Pie. Ground Beef (or lamb) with vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with cheesy mashed potatoes, and baked.

Classic Shepards Pie on a plate

Shepherd’s Pie

So, this is how you spell it:  Shepherd’s Pie.  But, from doing a quick google search, it came to my attention that TONS of people think it’s Shepards Pie.

Irish Shepherd’s Pie

Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie would actually call for ground lamb.  The difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie is the meat.  Cottage Pie uses ground beef, while Shepherd’s Pie uses ground lamb.

I called this recipe Shepherd’s Pie.  But, I wrote the recipe so that you could use ground beef or ground lamb.

I typically use ground beef because it is widely available.  But, for a special occasion, like St. Patricks day, I would use ground lamb.

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

(Note – The full printable recipe is at the bottom of this post)

Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Making the best Shepherd’s Pie is not difficult.  But, there are a few steps to it.  You have to make the meat mixture, the mashed potatoes, assemble the casserole, and bake it.

I find that the easiest way to make this dish is to work ahead.  You could make the beef or lamb mixture ahead of time.  Or, you could make the mashed potatoes ahead of time.

Piece of Shepards pie on a plate with layers of mashed potatoes and meat gravy with peas, carrots, onions, and corn

You could also make the whole recipe ahead of time.  Just assemble the casserole, cover the dish, and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it.  I find it is best to bake it within 3 days of preparing it.

When you are ready to bake it, take it out of the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before you need to bake it to let it start coming to room temperature.  Uncover it, and bake.

Ingredients

Meat Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 lb. 90% lean ground beef -or ground lamb
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves -minced
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup frozen mixed peas & carrots*
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels

Potato Topping:

  • 1 ½ - 2 lb. russet potatoes -about 2 large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter -1 stick
  • 1/3 cup half & half
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Instructions

Make the Meat Filling.

  • Add the oil to a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the onions. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef (or ground lamb) to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Add the parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and and pepper. Stir well. Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the flour and tomato paste. Stir until well incorporated and no clumps of tomato paste remain.
  • Add the broth, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen corn. Bring the liquid to a boil then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Set the meat mixture aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Make the potato topping.

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot. Cover the potatoes with water. Bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return the potatoes to the hot pot. Let the potatoes rest in the hot pot for 1 minute to evaporate any remaining liquid.
  • Add butter, half & half, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes and stir until all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Add the parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Stir until well combined.

Assemble the casserole.

  • Pour the meat mixture into a 9x9 (or 7x11) inch baking dish. Spread it out into an even layer. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat. Carefully spread into an even layer.
  • If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet so that the filling doesn’t bubble over into your oven. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.** Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

*If you can’t find frozen mixed peas and carrots, you could use ½ cup frozen peas and ½ cup frozen sliced carrots.
**Bake at 400° F.  Start preheating the oven after you make the meat mixture (listed in step 6).

Best authentic shepherd’s pie made with lamb and all those fresh herbs and spices made this recipe fun to make and tasted delicious. I will keep this in my recipe collection.

  2. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! Didn’t change anything on the recipe. Delicious! Will for sure use this recipe anytime Shepard’s Pie is requested.

  3. 4 stars
I made this on St Patty’s Day using ground lamb. Next time I will use ground beef. The gameyness of the lamb was a little too much for me!

    1. Hi Donna, I’ve never cooked with lamb, but I’ve cooked a lot of wild rabbits, squirrels, and venison. I have found out during my years of cooking, that if you want to tame the gaminess of lamb, or other gamey meats, usually soaking it in milk will do the trick or cooking it along with another meat and mix them together worked for me. Especially with venison roast. Cook it and a beef roast together, shred, and voila! Shredded roast sandwiches or add some barbecue sauce and make sammies with it.
If you soak the lamb in milk, you can soak it for a few hours or overnight. When you take the lamb out of the milk, rinse it off and cook as usual.

Excellent dish. My husband wants me to double it next time so that we will have more leftovers. It is a long list of ingredients, but I had all of them in my pantry and freezer, and those ingredients give the dish such a depth of flavor. I will certainly make it again.

  5. 5 stars
Excellent however I improvised a bit. I added a can of rotel which I sautéed before and with onions and I put Parmesan on top of potatoes rather than mixing in. Otherwise perfect

  6. 5 stars
This is the Best recipe. All the spices are well balanced and all cooks up delicious. I made it with ground beef as my husband doesn’t care for lamb. It worked very well! It’s a keeper for sure! Mashed potato topping is just the right ratio to the meat filling using a 9× 9 inch square casserole dish. Very good!

You have some of the best recipes I have ever made. This Shepherd’s pie is delicious and my family loves it. I made it last week and then made a double recipe to freeze today. I assembled it but did not bake it. Any suggestions on baking it after it is frozen?
    Thank you.
p.s. Your chicken pot pie is excellent and worth the effort of making your own crust!

My family absolutely loved this version of shepherd’s (cottage) pie! We have tried other recipes for shepherd’s pie in the past and this recipe by far has been the best that we’ve found. I doubled the potatoes to make more mashed potatoes to put a thick coating on top, added some shredded cheddar cheese into the potatoes while mashing and sprinkled the parmesan cheese over the top before baking. It sounds like a lot of ingredients but it was so easy to put together and so very, very tasty! YUM! This recipe will be used again and again!

  9. 5 stars
This recipe had amazing depth of flavors and richness . I altered the flour with a bit of brown gravey mix. It was absolutely delicious.

  10. 5 stars
I made this recipe a few days ago and my husband, who grew up eating Shepards Pie said it was like he remembered eating as a kid. We both enjoyed it and I am looking forward to making it again. Thank you.

Tried this for St. Patrick’s Day weekend 2023–made it today March 18th. It is great–really good. Haven’t had this since I was a young boy. I’ll be having plenty more. Not difficult to make and doesn’t make much of a mess to clean up. I bought Leg of Lamb at the grocery store and used my electric grinder to turn 1-1/3 lbs. into ground Lamb for the Shepherd’s Pie–the rest will be for Lamb Stew in the Slow Cooker.

    1. 5 stars
Amazing dish! My husband asked me to make this dish after having it at a dinner party. I made it exactly like the recipe. He loved it! Next time I will put potatoes at the bottom with cheddar cheese before adding meat mixture and then adding another layer of potatoes. I read it in one of the comments.
      Thank you!

  12. 5 stars
Easy and delicious meal. Can be one pan if you have something oven safe after the sautéing on the stove. Next time will cut the rosemary and thyme a little bit. Maybe restaurants have us used to something with less flavor. Also another change we will make, but using same recipe, put mashed potatoes on top after it has already been in the oven 20 minutes. We really like the separation of the two and the liquids of the meal boiled up through the potatoes. We cheated like most here and used refrigerated ones (bob Evans or hormel)

I made this recipe and it was fabulous. Used Elk hamburger instead and added a teaspoon of beef bouillon. I also like a bit of celery seed in my meat pies and doubled the potatoes because I like love potatoes. Plus, to make it gluten free I used Gefen pure Potato Starch instead of flour (1 tablespoon). I piped (withcake icing bag) the potatoes on. This recipe made two- 9 inch pies. I froze one on a tray a bit before covering it with foil. My son took that one back to college with him and baked it when he got home. He loved it. My husband loved it. Will definitely make this one of my go-to recipes.

  14. 5 stars
I’ve been watching old British Crime shows lately and in one, “Pie in the Sky”, the chef recommends putting a layer of potatoes at the bottom AND over top. So I did just that and also sprinkled a little more parmesan and it was excellent! Will definitely make again.

  15. 5 stars
Made on St. Patrick’s Day and it was a hit! Doubled the recipe without doubling the butter and it was perfect. I couldn’t find frozen carrots, so I just cut up fresh ones (next time I’ll soften them with the onion, but no one seemed to mind a little crunch. Thank you for sharing the recipe! Will definitely make again!

  16. 5 stars
Excellent. My whole family loved it.. I made in 3 separate baking dishes, one batch with plant based hamburger for my vegetarian daughter and one dish with only corn for my other daughter that doesn’t eat peas and carrots. My wife and I got the batch exactly from the recipe. A bit more work but to have a meal that everyone in my family says, ” Please make this again!”, Is rare. Because I had 3 dishes to cover didn’t have enough real mashed potatoes so had to supplement with a package of instant. Still delicious! Thanks for a great recipe.

  17. 5 stars
Delicious! I will say, as others have pointed out, make sure you start the potato filling before the meat! But overall, it was a perfect St. Patrick’s Day dinner and my family asked me to make it again next week!

  18. 5 stars
I actually made this more of a vegan type dish for Lent using Beyond Beef. It was wonderful! We couldn’t get over how flavorful it was and if I didn’t say anything, no one would have known that I didn’t use ground beef.
    This one’s a keeper.

  19. 5 stars
Made some freestyle changes to suit personal taste, however; hands down this si the best shepherds pie recipe I have ever found.

FYI – personal taste changes were fresh herbs, and 4 garlic cloves boiled and mashed with the potatoes and individual serving dishes prepared and baked.

  20. 5 stars
5 stars! This is in our regular meal rotation. I usually serve it with warm bread. Dried thyme isn’t my favorite so I usually cut that in half but that’s just a personal preference. Id also suggest peeling and putting the potatoes on the boil before starting the meat.

  21. 5 stars
Just made this for the first time and it will DEFINITELY be my go-to recipe for Shepherds Pie from here on out! I don’t eat ground beef or lamb, so I used ground Turkey, I used Yukon gold potatoes instead of russets, and I used a concentrated beef broth to amp up the flavor. It was phenomenal! Huz and teenager loved it, too.
    10/10 would recommend!

    1. 5 stars
Excellent! Don’t like frozen veg. Used canned-
VegAll and Summer Crisp Corn. Used Bob Evans original mashed potatoes. ( No energy to make homemade. ) We loved it!! Sauce is so flavorful and delicious! Thank you! Husband already asking to have again.

    1. 5 stars
Fantastic! I made a double batch and used Wagyu ground beef. I procrastinated and didn’t have time to go to the store to get the frozen veggies. I found a way to use my canned veggies without turning them to mush. I let the meat mixture cool and added the cold canned veggies right before assembling casserole. Worked out great. Didn’t have time to make the potatoes from scratch so I used 3 packets of the Idahoan Roasted Garlic variety of instant mashed potatoes according to direction. My parm cheese wasn’t any good so I substituted Pecorino Romano, just not as much due to its stronger and saltier flavor. It turned out great and the substitutions worked. As it happened, someone else used this recipe, minus the corn, and they both had a very similar taste. Delicious!

  22. 5 stars
First time we ever had Shepherds pie. This recipe is spectacular. My husband said it is one of the best meals he has ever had. Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing your recipe.

  23. 5 stars
This is one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted. Perfectly balanced flavors, texture, etc. I do double the peas and carrots because that’s what’s in the package.

  24. 5 stars
This recipe is a keeper! Our family of 4 all loved it! The mix of spices made this so delicious and I love the simple ingredients. I now make double it and freeze half… it gives us two family dinner plus a couple of extra servings 🙂

  25. 5 stars
I really enjoyed it. Not exactly the flavoring i was expecting, i think it was the rosemary. I also opted out of the corn, just because i was going for more of the basic recipe. Im definitely open to adding corn next time! Thanks

    1. 5 stars
Excellent recipe. Only real adjustment I’ve made is to up the herbs by like 25%, and to add more salt and pepper to the beef.

When the pie is almost done baking, turn up the heat by 20-30 degrees and run a pad of butter over the top. Let it crisp up. Gives a beautiful brown fringe to the pie.

  26. 5 stars
I’m not a lazy cook, but on a workday weeknight I like to keep things uncomplicated. This recipe does the trick, minus cooking up the potatoes. So, I took a short cut and used ready-to-microwave mashed potatoes – which I spread on top of the beef mixture and got into the oven in no time. I also boosted the Worcestershire sauce a bit to give it the pub taste that I grew up with in Washington, DC. Delish!

  27. 5 stars
I use this recipe all the time. Love it! So do all my grown kids!! Great way to get them to come visit. Free mama food! Thank you so much. Such a simple hearty winter comfort food!

  28. 5 stars
Delicious!!! Even the picky children ate it, & one had a second helping. Definitely a ‘make again’ recipe.

  29. 5 stars
This was very good! I added a little bit of turnip (because I had it) and some carrots and celery with the onions but other than that, I followed te recipe. Thank you for sharing.

  30. 5 stars
    Awesome!!I Great recipe.
I have never liked Shepherds Pie- I only made it as an “I’m sorry” dinner for my husband. I was going to eat leftovers while he had the Shepherds pie….but the pie looked so good I had to try a bite. Wow, I did not realize what I had been missing. This recipe has become one of our favorites.

  31. 5 stars
I made it for my fiancé,he ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!
Now I make it at least once a month… I make it with green bean casserole…ABSOLUTELY A HIT WITH MY FAMILY!!!

  32. 5 stars
Absolutely the best Shepherd’s Pie I’ve had in a very long time. Probably since my mother made it for me years ago. The combination of spices and ingredients made it a very fine meal of comfort food. The only thing is, I used a 9 x 13 dish because I didn’t want it dripping over the edge. Works great. The only suggestion I have, and I’ve found this on other recipes as well, is perhaps put the boiling of potatoes at the front of the recipe. I know it’s obvious that you need potatoes but having it up front is a reminder to get them on the stove while the rest of the recipe is being complete. Thanks for an amazing recipe! SO GOOD!!

  33. 5 stars
So YUM! I made this for the first time about a month ago and the kids and I fell in love! We’ve made it again since and wouldn’t change a thing about the recipe.

  34. 5 stars
This looks great. I think I’ll give this one a try. The last time I had Shepard’s Pie was when I was a young boy and my mother made it once that I remember. Maybe more times, but I remember the one time. It was good. I like these kinds of meals. Happy St. Patrick’s Day is coming up.

  35. 5 stars
My secret is a can of rorel.tomatoes and can of cream corn before the potatoes and cheese on top of potatoes…sooo awesome…

    1. 5 stars
Amazing. I was still eating out of the dish while cleaning up the kitchen. Wife said best she’s had. Use lamb if you can get it.

      1. 5 stars
Delicious. I made it exactly as the recipe called for and I can’t wait to serve it again. Thank you for sharing this.

  36. 5 stars
Made this recipe today and my family loved it. I doubled the recipe and added additional veggies. This was my first time trying Shepard’s pie. It was delicious and pretty easy to make. I will definitely be putting this meal in the rotation.

  37. 5 stars
This is hands down the BEST shepherd’s pie recipe I’ve been able to find. We use venison. My husband loves it!

    1. 5 stars
This was tasty and my family enjoyed it so I definitely will make it again. Since my granddaughter cannot eat beef I did replace the beef broth with vegetable broth and I used ground turkey meat.

      1. 5 stars
That’s how I do this dish as well for health reasons. Once in a blue moon lamb for a treat.

    1. Sandie, I am also living without an oven. If you happen to have a turkey roaster, it acts as a decent oven replacement.
Looking forward to trying this recipe tonight!

  38. 5 stars
has anyone tried to adapt this for crockpot? I loved it as posted but I am currently without an oven (don’t get me started on why) and need to feed a bunch of kids for St. Paddy’s Day. Thanks!

  39. 5 stars
I have made this recipe a number of times now, just as written. It is excellent, savory with the seasonings very well balanced. So, so yummy!!

  40. I just put it in the oven to bake. The beef mixture is wonderful and the potatoes, yum! Can only imagine it is going to be awesome after baked together. Thank you for the recipe.

  41. 5 stars
Made this today. Very easy and so delicious! I used ground turkey so I increased the amount of spices a little. I also used fresh chopped carrots and cooked with the onions. I decreased amount of butter in the potatoes and they were still very creamy and good. Next time I’ll get some lamb, which will be a treat.

  42. 5 stars
A really rich tasting shepherds pie. I think the only change I would make is less butter in the potatoes, it’s just a little bit too much. I would probably substitute some sour cream instead. I made it with ground elk and it was super delicious.

  43. 5 stars
I have to say that this is a terrific recipe! I made it to the specs and it was perfect. The right amount of herbs and everything else was great! THANK YOU!

  44. 5 stars
Best recipe! I have made this several times and my husband loves it. However the last time I only had chicken broth so I used that instead of beef broth, and was concerned it would not be as great. And, to my surprise it was as delicious as it was with beef broth! So it’s yummy either way!

  45. I love this recipe, but I did some playing and changed it into a breakfast pie. I use sage sausage, mixed veggies with a white pepper gravy with cheesy hassbrowns instead of mashed potatoes.

  46. 5 stars
This really is the “best “ Shepherd’s pie! I added a splash of red wine in with the meat mixture , otherwise I followed precisely . The ultimate comfort food!

  47. 5 stars
Just made this recipe for tonight’s dinner. I love how it’s full of flavor, cost efficient, filling, and so tasty. Ive tried other versions of recipes and this is my favorite one. Thank you for sharing with us. Keep up the great work.

  48. 5 stars
I really like this recipe. I substituted turkey for beef or lamb and cauliflower for potatoes. Delicious and very easy to prepare quickly.

  49. 5 stars
This is the Best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I’ve come across. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the results are absolutely delicious. I’ve already made this a number of times and it never disappoints. I even made a vegan version of this for my friend, with cooked lentils as the protein, soy sauce instead of Worcestershire sauce, and subbed oat milk and nutritional yeast for the mash, it actually turned out to be very tasty, she loved it!! This is a great recipe that can be altered to your dietary needs.

  50. 5 stars
This was easy and very good. I made a double batch. I used ground round, ground turkey and spicy sausage to add more flovor. I also added more carots, corn and peas. The second time I made it I used store bought Simply Potatoes becasue I had them in the refrigerator and wanted to use them. everyone loved this

  51. 5 stars
This concoction was delicious. I added 1/2 lb of lean ground beef to the pound of ground lamb. The spice mixture in the recipe is balanced. I used red potatoes instead of russets, and shaved fresh parmesan from a chunk. Easy peasy to make and it does lend itself to early preparation. Some steamed broccoli with sesame seeds is the perfect companion, along with a Portuguese red.

  52. 5 stars
Made this for the 1st time tonight and it was delicious. I made 1/2 the recipe since it’s just me and left out the corn that I do not eat. This is definitely a keeper.

  53. I’m trying to prepare some meals in advance to freeze since I’m expecting my first baby in 7 weeks. Does this casserole freeze well?

  54. 5 stars
This is ALWAYS my go to recipe. I always use lamb and bake it in my cast-iron Dutch oven pot. It’s absolutely delicious!!

  55. 5 stars
This was AMAZING!!!! My husband told me he didn’t like shepards pie and asked if I would be mad if he made his own dinner with the meat I wasn’t going to use… I said sure. A little bit later he came out and said it smelled so delicious, he was going to try it. He got up 3… THREE times for more! He said “how did I ever doubt this?!” Lol. It was amazing. Thank you!

  56. I have always wanted to try this recipe. I’m so glad I came across it, it was a hit with my picky eaters! Thank you so much!

  57. 5 stars
This is an awesome dish. I made this for dinner, mind you my husband is a Chef and he absolutely raved about the dish. He went to work the next day and made it for his residence. This is a keeper!!!

  58. 5 stars
I made this recipe this evening for supper and everyone LOVED it!
I used ground sirloin, it was so delicious, and everyone came back for seconds!
THIS RECIPE IS MOST DEFINITELY A KEEPER! 🙂

  59. 5 stars
I have made this recipe many times with both the lamb (traditional Shepherd’s Pie) and with Beef (Cottage Pie). I have had rave reviews every time. I had an original recipe an original recipe that was lost when we had Superstorm Sandy and this is even better.

I am keeping this recipe and even had to reprint since it is very dogeared!!

  60. 4 stars
great flavors, but what kind of coverage do you get with 2lbs (2 lg russet potatoes) of spuds? Has ANYONE managed to do this with 2lbs of potatoes and put more than 1/4-1/2″ of potatoes over the meat filling? 🙂

It’s a 5/5 recipe, but be prepared to use more potatoes!

    1. That’s exactly what I was wondering!!! Two potato’s? I’m gonna try more like 5-6 and if it’s too much I’ll save it for another meal. But just 2 potato’s sure doesn’t seem enough!

  61. 5 stars
Second time making this and definitely the BEST shepherd’s/cottage pie ever! My husband and I love it! I always rice potatoes for mash. Only change I made.

  62. 5 stars
All the herbs, tomato paste, beef broth gave the meat sauce a nice flavor with no one herb or the garlic standing out. It is a nice blend. I used Resers Main Street Bistro mashed potatoes. They aren’t as good as following the mashed potato recipe listed here, but they saved this old, disabled woman quite a bit of time.. Also, my husband says cooking ground meat as thoroughly as most recipes direct turns the meat into little hard balls of protein with no flavor. Therefore, we always make any sauce and simmer it; cook the ground meat slightly in a separate pan then add the meat to the sauce. Letting the meat fully cook in the oven with the sauce enhances the meat flavor to blend with all the ingredients. I have several shepherds pie recipes, but this one is easier and still very tasty. I will make this one again.

  63. 5 stars
The Shepherds pie turn out so good! My family really liked it and they are really picky eaters. I used ground beef and I added more cheese in the potato topping and I sprinkled some cheese on top. So yummy 😋

  64. 5 stars
My husband said, “the best shepherds pie I’ve ever had”. I substituted the beef meat with ground turkey because we needed to use it up, BUT added in a couple big spoonfuls of our bacon grease from the morning for some extra flavor. I had never had shepherds pie before but this was SO good!!

  65. 5 stars
Delicious! I made a mistake and added 2 tbsp of parsley instead of 2 tsp and removed as much as I could and it still turned out delicious. I added a little more vege’s, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste bc I had 2 1/2lbs frozen ground beef and I couldn’t separate it until most cooked down. I’m glad I did because it offered more servings. I had to show some restraint and not eat the entire dish in one meal! It ended up being a bitter cold day so this dish was perfect! It’s also calls for ingredients most have in stock.

    Absolutely awesome
I purchased a LARGE individual muffin pan
This recipe made a perfect 6 portions
    Easy to make too

This is closer to my Irish mom’s recipe. She made it with ground beef because here in the states, it is more affordable than back home she said. But whenever lamb was on sale, she would stock the freezer and make her own grounded lamb for this dish and others, as well as tubing it for stews and her other recipes. Around certain holidays, there was a man who sold lamb roasts and chops around Easter she would buy from him.
I follow her recipe, except I use gravy that I make up 4 times a year and freeze in 1-cup containers. It’s from scratch from bones trimmings, etcetera. I also make stock too. Chicken gravy and stock I also do around the same time. When I saw this recipe my first thought was this would be mom approved!

I made this dish using textured pea protein (2 cups rehydrated with 1.5 cups of water), used a little butter to help add back some fat to the recipe. It was fantastic, and I am not a great cook. I have never cooked with tpp before and this was a great introduction. I used an extra splash of Worcestershire. So glad I found this recipe!

Awesome! Wanted a different recipe for hamburger meat and it didn’t fail me! So good and great flavor! I left out the tomato paste and worcestershire sauce because I didn’t have either. The beef broth and flour combination makes a wonderful gravy mixed with the other spices! So good and so easy!

I have made this recipe many times and each time it is terrific! If you are in a time crunch (which I usually am) I have used already prepared mashed potatoes and that cuts the prep time down. Such a great, versatile recipe. Thank you!

  71. I have made this twice now, and let me tell you… this stuff is on another level. The seasoning on the filling will change your life. Outstanding work. Thank you!

  72. 5 stars
First time making shepherds pie in years. Think I found a winning recipe, so delicious! Not too hard to pull together if you have the time. Followed the recipe but added a touch more salt and pepper to taste.

  73. 5 stars
I made this almost exactly the way the recipe was written. This is not my normal way of cooking, but it looked right to me and I had never made Shepherd’s Pie. My only deviation was to use a frozen mix of corn, green beans, carrots and peas as that was what was available at the store and I put in 2 cups. The dish was delicious and had good. eye appeal. I do not see any need to modify it as the spicing was perfect to my tastes. I did make peaks on purpose on the mashed potato topping to get good browning. A great comfort food dish.

  74. 5 stars
Superb. It’s better than I had expected. The lamb and spices used are perfect compliments to one another. This will be a staple in our home for years to come. Thank you.

  75. 5 stars
    I made this today! Delicious‼️

One question…fo I baste the top with an egg wash? I’ve done this in the past but don’t see it here.

Best Recipe of Shepards Pie I’ve come acrossed! My family ate until they were complaining about how full they were, and then my son went in for another helping lol.

  77. 5 stars
I have made this 3 times in the past 2 months. Every time I have used leftover prime rib and it has been stupendous! Bookmarked!

  78. 5 stars
This is the best shepherd’s pie. Very tasty yet easy to make. This will definitely be one of my go-to recipes. My husband loves this dish.

  79. 5 stars
This is unbelievable ! I can imagine how good it will be as a leftover. I went to Ireland this summer, and had shepherds pie, and almost every pub. This one beats all of them.😋

  80. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! Very rarely do I find a recipe that I don’t have to adjust slightly to make it more flavorful. It turns out perfect just the way it is. It’s so good, it has become a new staple in our house. Highly recommend!

  81. 5 stars
I never leave reviews but I am for this recipe. I have many years experience cooking professionally and personally. This is hands down the very best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I have ever made and I have made a few.

  82. 5 stars
I almost never leave reviews but this is incredibly tasty so I had to share how much we liked it. Once my picky 4yr old got it in his mouth he immediately loved it and ate a full bowl, and told me he loved it. I’ve made Shepherds pie before but this was by far the best. No changes or mods needed – make exactly as is, its delicious. (I didn’t have half and half for the potatoes so I used milk and some plain yogurt)

The fact that it is so quick and easy is a huge bonus. I cooked the meat /sauce in a large cast iron pan and added the mashed potatoes on top and baked in the same pan. No need to transfer into a separate baking dish and one less thing to wash.

  83. 5 stars
Shepherd’s pie I’ve ever eaten! Perfect blend of seasoning. I used ground lamb and didn’t skimp on the Worcestershire sauce!
Very helpful that the recipe allows for doubling or tripling the recipe. I made extra filling to freeze for future.

  84. 5 stars
This was FABULOUS! It was probably the most flavorful Shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had. I didn’t want to stop eating it. I made one alteration. I added a truffle parmesan seasoning to the potatoes. All of it was so good!

  85. 5 stars
Love this, definitely my go to if all i have is hamburger in the fridge and my kids coming over to eat my food lol. I don’t stray from the recipe, works great every time! Maybe I’ll do instant potatoes but the cheese is key. Thanks for something easy and delicious! Leftovers are great but that hardly comes up 🤔

  86. 5 stars
This was yummy. I made two personal preference adjustments. I subbed the rosemary for some dry steak seasoning, because I don’t like the taste of it, and I subbed the Worcestershire sauce for Hickory BBQ sauce and a dash of A1 sauce to the beef mixture. It was tasty. My Mother In Law is impossible to please, and she liked it as well. That says a lot. I would make it again. Thanks

  87. 5 stars
This is fabulous but you need to use good mincemefrom butchers it farm shop like we did supermarket mince will not have the same outcome

  88. I always made Sheppard’s pie with a tomato beef base for over 30 years . This recipe was so go that I am NEVER making it any other way. Thank You!

  89. 5 stars
I don’t typically leave comments but this dish has been a staple in our household for over a year. I rarely find recipes that I go back to but this one is my all time favorite! I always go a bit more on the potatoes and a bit more garlic- but this dish makes an Irish family jump for joy! Thank you for this! 100/10 would recommend.

  90. 5 stars
Made this in parts this week due to a very busy schedule. Put it together for dinner tonight. Got a colonoscopy coming up next Wednesday, and trying hard to eat clean/healthy.

  91. 5 stars
I looked at one or two recipes before this one and stopped right here. It was delicious! We doubled the recipe and had to make extra mashed potatoes to go with it because the layer was too thin. Love the tomato paste and beef broth combo. More flavourful.
We made it on a snow day and everyone was waiting for it to be ready!

  92. 5 stars
Wow! Fantastic recipe—clear, on-hand ingredients, & easy-to-follow…best of all, DELICIOUS! I almost always doctor ingredients in recipes but this was the rare exception. I was skeptical about the tomato paste but the overall combined proportions and flavorings resulted in the absolute perfect outcome. My small mods include whisking the tomato paste & flour (I used corn starch) into the beef broth before pouring it into the ground beef mixture. I cheated on mashed potatoes (easy peasy in 5 minutes & yummy…2-4 oz I*****n loaded baked potatoes flavor made with 4 c boiling water). I also greased/cooking sprayed the pan before layering the pie. Awesome regular rotation family recipe. The veggies’ taste & texture are nicely camouflaged in this dish. Thank u!

  93. Can you mash the potatoes with a beater? Not sure if it makes a difference. I want to make this recipe today.
    Thanks

  94. 5 stars
This recipe is a family favorite. The flavors are great! I make it with Impossible Burger and it works really well. I usually cut back on the butter and use milk instead of half and half, and the potatoes are still really rich and flavorful. I laugh every time I read the note that tells me I can use 1/2 cup of frozen carrots and 1/2 cup of frozen peas instead of 1 cup of frozen peas and carrots! Really? Actually, I use fresh carrots, and put them in towards the end of the onion cooking time.
It works well to make the meat layer and the potato layer early in the day and put them in separate containers in the refrigerator. A little before cooking, take them out of the fridge to bring them to room temperature. Then, assemble and bake. It maybe adds 5 minutes to the cooking time.

  95. 5 stars
Super flavorful! I’m definitely keeping the recipe to make again! My son who hates peas and carrots had seconds!

  96. 5 stars
I made your classic Shepards Pie recipe and we both loved it. My Husband insisted I add a pound of reg sausage with the ground beef which made me have to double the recipe and there is only the two of us. We will be eating this for the next three days but I don’t think we will mind. A big winner in our book. Thanks for the recipe!

  97. 5 stars
This is literally the best shepherds pie I’ve EVER had. Amazing flavour! (I put more of everything) and it was EASY!

  98. 5 stars
This was delicious! Only a few changes to the recipe: 1. I don’t like peas so I used an Italian style mixed frozen veggies (lima beans, carrots, zukes, Italian green beans). 2. Used Fage yogurt w/milk since I didn’t have 1/2 & 1/2. 3. Made some extra mashed potatoes, so we could decorate the top like an iced cake. Will definitely make this again.

  99. 5 stars
The only thing I would change is the parmesan cheese (not very English or Irish) to white cheese and add a bit more than the recipe suggests. Other than that it is pretty good. As for authentic, well, its as I just said, it’s pretty good, but I’ve had it at an English pub and it was much better and a bit different. You must know that this was, in England originally a meal made from leftover meat, vegetables and potatoes so there are different variations which have become over time a more common or similar recipe intentionally made from scratch and not leftovers.

  100. 5 stars
I made it tonight and it was amazing no leftovers. I used ground Turkey and added cheese and cornbread so I layers it potatoes, meat, cheese and topped it off with cornbread.

  101. 5 stars
This is such an awesome recipe!! My husband likes this better than the shepherd’s pie at McGuires restaurant!! I put mine in a 9×11 dish to be able to add extra mashed potatoes to it. I also add shredded cheddar which adds a nice touch.

  102. 5 stars
Rave reviews from my whole family. I had to make a substitution due to a family member’s allergy (subbed baby limas for the peas). The parmesan I had was a bit mild for our taste, so I added a tablespoon of nutritional yeast to up the cheesiness.

  103. 5 stars
Just yum!!! Happened upon the recipe by chance n so glad that I did. We ate every bit of it! Even the picky eaters enjoyed🤤

  104. 5 stars
OMG! I found this recipe before Christmas and I’ve been craving it ever since. Well, I finally made it! It’s amazing! I added a little bit of red wine to enhance the richness. I will definitely hold on to this recipe! It’s a winner.

  105. 5 stars
This was so delicious on a winter evening. I used lamb and fresh thyme I had in the fridge, along with a pinch of red pepper flakes. I found that canned corn worked well, too. Definitely one of the best shepherd’s pies I’ve ever made. Thank you!

  106. 5 stars
This is very good, my husband and myself really enjoyed it and wouldn’t change a thing. This will be in the rotation and I am sharing it with my daughter and sister.

  107. 5 stars
Delicious! I added grated zucchini in lieu of corn and used whole milk and cheddar in the potatoes. Gotta use what’s in the fridge 🙂 This was so easy definitely a keeper!!

  108. 5 stars
All 4 of my kids and husband literally said the words “this is the best shepherd’s pie!”. It really was super good. I followed the recipe exactly BUT I think using fresh herbs (imo) makes everything better so I might try that next time.
    Thanks for a keeper:)

  109. This recipe was nothing short of mouth watering . I doubled the recipe and made it for 2 families. Such a crowd pleaser. I followed this recipe to a “T” changed nothing and was super with the results.

  110. 5 stars
I’ve made this today and I have to say, AWESOME! My husband is going to go nuts, he loves Shepherds Pie! This is the best one I’ve ever made. Thank you for the recipe.

  111. I cooked this shepherds pie for my dinner. It was good. I will cut portion and throw in the freezer. That’s what I’m doing as I am always busy. No time to cook. Thank you for the recipe.

  112. 5 stars
We love this recipe! I make it twice a month and it is always a huge hit.
I only use beef, lamb isn’t popular in my home, and fresh carrots, just because we keep them on hand…. but we are lovers of this recipe.
It is warm, hearty and great for leftovers.

  113. 5 stars
This recipe has been a staple in my house for three years now, always winning the favor of all friends and guests!! Every bite is SO DELICIOUS. Five stars hands down

  114. This was so delicious! I made the meat mixture with celery, corn, and peas because that’s what I had. Then I made my own mashed potatoes “recipe”- just cream, ground white pepper added until creamy. The beef broth and tomato paste ratio within the mixture was perfection! I like to try a new recipe every time and this was really good! Nice texture and delicious flavor!! Thank you!!

  115. 5 stars
So so delicious! Perfect balance of flavors and my husband loves it!!
I added brown gravy to top it with to make it complete. We used to serve it with gravy at a restaurant I worked at as a teen.

  116. 5 stars
Kudos to Ms. Finks for this tasty recipe. I have tried it several times now and it’s always been a big hit with dinner guests.

  117. 5 stars
I found this recipe to use my leftover mash potatoes from our big Christmas party and oh my gosh!! So yummy. I think this is our family’s new comfort meal. Delicious

  118. I made this without the spices called for (rosemary and thyme)Used garlic and parsley only. and all the other ingredients. With a sprinkling of mozzrella on the potatoes and served with a dollop of sour cream on the side with a tossed salad. Yum, yum. Thanks for this recipe.

  119. 5 stars
This is one our all time favorite recipes in our house! We’re vegetarian, so we use Impossible ground beef and it turns out amazing every time. Incredible flavors and perfect for the holidays!

  120. 5 stars
This dish is AMAZING! Very easy to prepare and the seasonings all come together to form a masterpiece of flavors! I’m bringing two pans to my son’s house on Christmas Day as part of our supper. I know it will be a huge hit! This is definitely my favorite Shepherd ‘s Pie recipe!

  121. I made this tonight and ended up making twice as much potatoes so I out it in two pie dishes! Also substituted Gardein ground Be’f for the ground beef and it turned out amazing! Tasty and I feel good eating it. Great recipe will make again!

  122. Also I added chopped up parsnips as an extra veg. I also put in more of the carrots and peas. I have always tried to up-veg these kinds of dishes. It is easier to double the amount and then freeze one for later.

  123. Great recipe. I doubled the recipe and added two teaspoons of Marmite if you have it. The meat part improves by making it a day ahead.

  124. 5 stars
We really enjoyed this recipe. The flavours were very very good and well balanced. I did not alter the recipe at all.

  125. 5 stars
This was a great hit for our backyard bonfire party. Yummy, comfort food, tasty, everyone gave lots of compliments and went back for seconds. Super easy to prep and throw in oven once guests arrive. Made with a side pear/arugula/gorgonzola salad. AMAZING. All the guests left with the recipe as requested haha

  126. 5 stars
This meal was absolutely delicious. I even used instant potatoe mix and my husband is in love. He is asking me to make this every week. The only thing I did wrong was add too much minced garlic. I did not follow the amount the directions called for and I don’t recommend adding more garlic than this recipe calls for.

  127. I’m making this right now. I didn’t have frozen peas or carrots just can’s which is so unusual because I don’t eat canned vegetables. My boyfriend always thinking everything has to be stocked. It sure sounds good so I hope I don’t mess it up.

  128. 5 stars
I made this for dinner one night, and WOW, was it ever good!! I am planning to make it again for a special Christmas Eve dinner. The only thing that I will do the next time is to make more mashed potatoes for the topping. This is going to be recipe that we will make over and over again.

  129. How does this recipe hold up to freezing for food prepping several of these? If so what would the changes be when bringing them from the freezer for baking?

  130. 5 stars
Love this so much. One of the best shepards pie ever. I added old bay seasoning to it because I didn’t have a lot of the seasonings and it was great!!

  131. 5 stars
Made this recipe for the first time, doubled it because I had 2 lbs of lean ground beef. Used most of the same spice, added some chunks of fresh carrot and mushrooms and winged a few measurements but the flavour was tremendous. I also broiled it for the last 5 minutes and the cheese in the potatoes browned wonderfully. My husband was impressed and had 4 pieces. I will definitely make this again.

  132. 5 stars
I’ve made Shepherd’s Pie many times before, always using a different recipe. I could never quite find the right meat mixture and it always tasted bland to me. Then I found this recipe! I believe it is the combination of the spices, Worcestershire sauce, and the tomato paste that gave it the taste I was looking for.

The only part I change any time I make Shepherd’s Pie are the vegetable ingredients I use a 15 oz. can of corn as I’m not a fan of carrots (I may add peas the next time I make it).

Thanks for sharing this recipe, as I will be using this one from now on!

  133. 5 stars
This is by far the best recipe I have tasted. My husband and I recently ate at an Irish pub and were disappointed as the dish was so bland. it left us wanting more. Found this recipe, and I made it tonight for dinner, without the peas but instead sauteed fresh carrots and onions together initially before adding the meat to brown. The result was incredible We could not stop eating it— it was sooo good. It will become on of our comfort food recipes forever!

  134. 5 stars
    Super tasty, easy to make!
I made it few times, every time putting different vegetables (zucchini etc.) on top of the meat mixture, before potatoes! Adds moisture and texture!

  135. 5 stars
Honestly the best shepherds pie we have ever had! Didn’t need the cheese in the mashed potatoes..but was extra delicious!

  136. 5 stars
I made this vegan by substituting Beyond Burger (4 patties) for the meat, used vegan Worcestershire sauce ,and veggie broth instead of beef broth, vegan butter (Earth Balance) and Unsweetened Silk for the half & half. It was really good, to the level of amazing!

  137. 4 stars
Very good. A few suggestions: I weighed my potatoes at the store and it took 4+ to get to 2lbs. I would recommend starting with the potatoes first, not the meat as the recipe orders it. That’s what I did, and I was done with the meat & veggies before the potato water started boiling. I felt like the meat was missing some depth of flavor, so I added about 1/2 C. of red wine. It was an improvement in my opinion, but to each their own. Finally, I had fresh carrots I wanted to use up, so I peeled and chopped them and added with the onions to ensure adequate cooking time.

  138. 5 stars
I have made this recipe over and over and over and over again. EVERYONE LOVES IT!!!

I haven’t made it for a few months, and I am going to make it this week for someone new.

I have to give him most of it because I am unstoppable at eating it myself.

  139. 5 stars
Folks, this is a SUPER “basic recipes” that leaves so much freedom to move in your direction.
I made this for the 3rd time tonight and it’s just the Amazing best.
I added various cheeses to the Potatoes and used Okinawan Sea Salt. It was speachless to see the
family enjoy this special dish. This has turned into a weekly dish. Thank you so much.

  140. 5 stars
My husband hated shepherds pie since childhood until I made this one. He asked for seconds and told me to definitely make again. We love garlic so I just added a little extra to the meat mixture. The parm in the potatoes gave it a nice flavor.

  141. 5 stars
I always make a recipe exactly as written the first time I make it. That being said, I hate rosemary and thyme isn’t my favorite either but I added them anyway. It tasted delicious!

  142. 5 stars
Great Recipe — I’ve been making my take on both versions for most of my life. Only thing I would recommend is putting a small layer of the mashed potatoes on the bottom (very thin layer) – it somehow enhances the gravy and crisps a bit on the bottom. Make sure the oven is fully pre-heated if you do so.

  143. 5 stars
Very tasty dish. I added extra garlic powder in the mashed potatoes per taste and also some cream cheese to make them extra creamy. Overall very flavorful and even my very picky kids loved it.

  144. 5 stars
Oh my God this shepherd’s pie was so good that I had to come back and put a review. Usually I don’t put a review but having this pie, I had to come back and put one down. 10 out of 10

  145. 5 stars
What is the serving size? I get that you say 1/6th but is that like 1 cup or what? My son counts calories etc… and would like an exact amount.

  146. 5 stars
This is the best shepherds pie I’ve ever made all it needs it need it’s 1/4 of thyme and rosemary and it’s perfect

  147. 5 stars
I made ahead as today is such a busy day! Any suggestions on alterations to time in over since it was in the fridge overnight?

    1. 5 stars
I prepared mine the day before and stored in the refrigerator overnight. Before I baked it, I let it come to room temperature. It turned out great.

    2. 5 stars
Very easy and tasty! Exactly the perfect measurements for each ingredient. The Husband gave direct instructions to print and save this recipe and to NEVER deviate from its original measurements! This will be a staple at our dinner table.

    3. 5 stars
I have made a version of this several times. I use ground Turkey and add more spices. I usually make a double batch and it’s always a hit. Thank you for posting.

    4. You can add 10 minutes if it’s been in the fridge all day or overnight, so bake for 35 to 40 minutes.
Check it at 30 minutes just to make sure your potatoes aren’t burning. If they are getting to brown, just put tin foil loosely over the potatoes.

    5. 5 stars
This was so satisfying and comforting, absolutely delicious! I went carb crazy and served with toasted ciabatta bread. The flavors were deep and rich and outstanding, didn’t change a thing.

    6. 5 stars
Made this recipe this evening for the family, it was a hit! So delicious, the best shepherd’s pie we’ve ever had!

    7. When I put pre-made casseroles in the fridge overnight, I usually pop them in the microwave for a few minutes to take the chilll off of them. Then I place in a preheated oven for the time suggested in the recipe… for this one, 400 degrees 25-30 minutes or until bubbly, as recipe states.

    8. 5 stars
Its a winner! I made it using chunks of lamb from a leg of lamb, not ground and fresh carrots sautéed with onions. I actually had some homemade lamb broth from the roast and used that.I also cooked up the meat filling in a dutch oven and put the potatoes directly on top and threw the whole thing in the oven. I also use 1% milk, and only half the butter, but filled in with cream cheese. It all worked out.

  148. 5 stars
I made this tonight it was delicious, I used ground turkey instead and traded the Worcestershire sauce for soy sauce but amazing, also we’re texture freaks so we added some crushed potato chips.

    1. 5 stars
      This was yummy!
I made one with regular mashed potatoes.
I also made one with mashed sweet potatoes (just cause I like them). Delicious!!
Will make this again. Thanks for the recipe.

    2. 5 stars
It is our family’s tradition to have Shepherd’s Pie on Christmas Eve. This year I decided to try a different recipe, yours! I am so glad I did. This proved to be easy and definitely a keeper. I double the gravy ingredients, just because that’s how we like it. Thank you and welcome to the family!

    3. 4 stars
Very good and simple recipe. Next time I make it I will cut the rosemary and thyme in half. It was a little overwhelming. Also I cook my ground chuck in little chunks instead of chopped it all like taco meat. Overall great recipe. I will be cooking again.

    4. 5 stars
This was great. I don’t like creamy potatoes so I left out the half and half and just stirred the potatoes with a quarter cup of butter and probably half a cup of cheese, sprinkled more on top and baked for 25 minutes. We both had seconds!

    5. 5 stars
I have been looking for a delicious Shepherd’s Pie recipe for ages and came across this one. I followed the recipe and incorporated a few extra items into it from another recipe (my standard procedure). 1/2 c. Red wine added to cooked beef and reduce, then follow rest of recipe. When all beef came together and was simmering, a couple of handfuls of Hormel Bacon pieces (real bacon) and extra Worcester Sauce to give it that authentic Shepherd’s Pie flavor. Also added 1/4 cup sour cream to potato mixture as I didn’t have any Half &Half. Simply delicious! Now I have the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe.

    1. The recipe shows in the upper right corner 1x 2x 3x and it appears all ingredients are doubled if you are making the recipe, times 2.

    2. 5 stars
This is not only the best Shepherd’s Pie I’ve ever had, it might be the tastiest meal I’ve ever made in my life!

      Absolutely excellent recipe!

    3. I tried this and it was very soupy. So I’m not sure how to make it with the right proportions if you have 2 lbs of beef

    4. Hi Nicole, I’m not the original poster but saw your question. We are a family of 6 and often have to double the meat portion so yes, I would double the sauce/liquids/seasoning and only added extra vegetables as you like. No need to double the potatoes though unless you want to.

    5. 5 stars
I made double, I doubled everything, and put it in a 13×9 casserole with a sheet pan underneath for anything that may have dripped. It was a huge hit, so you will want to double.

    6. 5 stars
Yes. Definitely. I make 4x recipe and freeze half. I use 2x to feed 6 people with corn muffins and a side salad. 🙂 I also bake it at 375 as it gets overcooked. You don’t want to overcook it.

    7. 5 stars
Best tasting shepherd’s pie I’ve ever eaten. My husband had seconds. And we both had it today for lunch. Thank you for sharing.

    8. Personally I think it depends on if you want more meat added to your potatoes, at most I would do one plus a half ratio when you have twice the meat, remember meat is protein and potatoes are carbs

    9. In any recipe, be careful doubling salt. Use half again as much salt as called for, then taste, and adjust with additional pinches of salt.

    10. 5 stars
I’ve made this so many times and it’s such a hit in my house! Can you make ahead and freeze this recipe? Any suggestions?

    11. 5 stars
Wow! I love this recipe! Comfort food to the max! Thank you for the great recipe and a new spin to the one that I’ve been using for years, I was happy to spice things up a bit and make some changes to mine. Love it!

  149. 5 stars
This is the very best Shepherd’s Pie I’ve ever made. I used half the butter and the potatoes were still buttery and delicious. I used lamb instead of beef. Since I made the meat filling in a cast iron frying pan, I topped the meat filling with the potatoes and popped it in a 400° oven. It cut the baking time by half because the pan was already heated.

    1. 5 stars
This is the best Shepard pie. My family loved it. I just made another pan with chicken and added cheddar cheese to the potatoes. Was so good.

    2. Great idea to bake in the cast iron skillet. I’m going to try it with lesser basking time as you suggest.

  150. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it was a hit! My friend went back for seconds!! Thank you super yummy and better than my recipe. Only changes I didn’t have thyme so I left it out and my mixed veggies had string beans. It’s a keeper!

I tried the recipe and it came out amazing! Of course as I like to add my own ingredients like red chilli powder, Turmeric powder, jeera powder, garam masala and more for more of an Indian spices twist. I did use Halal ingredients so instead of broth I used a vegetable oxo cube and boiled it in water with Halal Lamb. I didn’t have my frozen veg so I just used peas. Thank you for this recipe, I had no idea how to make shepards pie but this had given me an idea of how to make it and so I did. It’s easy, quick and tastes amazing. My family loved it!

I’ve used the bones of this recipe a few times now and like it so much! I hate doing dishes so I use the cast iron skillet I cook everything in to top with potatoes and cook. I omit the garlic and cheese, and add a lot of diced mushrooms. It’s so good!

    1. 5 stars
This recipe was the first recipe and only one I have used for Shepherds Pie. I love this recipe, surprisingly easier than I always thought Shepherds Pie to be. I did not make mashed potatoes from scratch. I bought Bob Evans Premade mashed potatoes and added all the ingredients to them. It was delicious.

  152. Wondering if this can be assembled and then frozen (before baking). If so, just thaw before baking per the instructions?

  153. 5 stars
Made this for dinner tonight. I only had the small red and gold potatoes on hand so skins stayed on. I also had a frozen carrot, corn, and green bean mix. It was a big hit. It will definitely become a regular menu item at our house. I can’t wait for leftovers tomorrow.

    1. 5 stars
I made this for dinner tonight my husband loved it. He is a very picky eater hates vegetables anything healthy. Thank you for sharing this recipe I wouldn’t change a thing.

  154. 5 stars
I made this last night and all 4 of my kids loved it, especially my 4 year old! Will definitely be adding to our rotation. I actually used venison for the meat and it was amazing. Really delicious recipe.

  155. 5 stars
I followed all instructions, except that I made this with boxed mashed potato topping. Did not have peas or corn, so used diced carrots, diced celery for the peas and diced frozen broccoli for the corn. The seasoning on the meat was great as is, and it was really a good meal.

  156. Tasty and versatile. Don’t leave out the tomato paste–that kicks it up a notch from recipes that don’t call for the tomato paste.

  157. 5 stars
Hello! Have you ever tried freezing this pie? Made it tonight it was fantastic with double seasoning. It’s so much work. I’m wondering if I can make two at once and freeze one. Thanks!

    1. 5 stars
I’ve frozen this recipe before and it froze up beautifully!! I’d say to cook it with aluminum for half the cooking time then without it otherwise the cheese browns before the rest can cook! This isn’t an issue if you thaw it though!! <3

    2. 5 stars
This was superb! And I don’t believe it was much more work than anything else—I even added a few carrots, and threw in both frozen corn and frozen peas. Don’t skip any of the ingredients, though. I used lamb because—hello?—SHEPHERD’S pie. But I’m sure it’s good with beef as well.

  158. 5 stars
I never leave reviews on recipes I try whether I like them or not, this is my honest first one…but my whole family LOVED this dish and they rarely all like the same thing. I followed the meat portion of the recipe exactly, I dished into premade pie crusts and used leftover mashed potatoes so I did not use the potato recipe. I also added a bit of leftover gravy into the meat mix, perfect for using thanksgiving leftovers.

  159. 5 stars
We made this last night and followed the recipe verbatim and it is excellent! Our picky family loved it! I would not change a thing.

  160. 5 stars
I make this at least once a month. It is outstanding. Thank you so much! Even if I use ground beef instead of lamb it is amazing and still retains the same flavors. I will make this routinely forever.

  161. 5 stars
I tried the recipe with turkey meat instead since that’s all I had on hand. It was delicious and a great hit with a picky 6 year old eater. Will definitely do it again. Thank you.

  162. 5 stars
This is the second Sunday I’ve made this and it’s a WINNER!!
My family LOVES this Cottage Pie. My wife doesn’t like onions, so I ommit them.
I also add some Cream Cheese to the potato mixture.
So, not a “true” Cottage Pie… more like an “Apartment Pie”. LOL

  163. 5 stars
Oh. My. Gosh. This recipe is so good! A keeper for sure. And I normally can’t stand shepherds pie. I love the flavors – simply fantastic.

  164. 5 stars
Full disclosure, I have never before made or even eaten Shepherds Pie. It seemed an odd dish. Well I am a believer now. I followed the recipe pretty closely. I think the Worcestershire is the key. Not that I have a reference point. Definitely a great comfort type food for a cold day. Thanks!

  165. 5 stars
I never leave reviews on recipes. This is, by far, one of the best recipes I’ve made from scratch. I used canned French Green Beans instead of the 1/2 cup of carrots only because I didn’t have any and omg, this was excellent. I also used 2% milk instead of half and half. Everything else, I made to the T. This was SO FREAKING GOOD! thank you 🙂

  166. 5 stars
Can I freeze this shepherds pie?
If so. Should I cook before freezing
I’m making meals for my son !!
This recipe is simply the best !

  167. 5 stars
I didn’t have tomato paste, so I skipped that part with the flour. I simply added a bit less beef broth, but still boiled and simmered. It was VERY good, and a big hit with the family!

  168. This dish was delicious. I lightened up on the rosemary and thyme. This dish will have a lot of action over the next few years.

  169. 5 stars
Great looking recipe. I followed the instructions but used instant Parmesan Garlic Red Potatoes.
It turned out great. I put the dish in large Ramekins.
I also used it with Ground Beef and Italian Sausage mix!

  170. 5 stars
The best Shepherd’s pie ever! I’ve been making it about once a week since I first discovered this recipe. It has become my son’s favorite dish. I use ground beef instead of ground lamb and I also, sadly, omit the parmesan due to food allergy, but it is always, always a hit.

  171. 5 stars
we’ll have you ever while cooking say to yourself this will be good next day for lunch 😀 we’ll ya I thought that but there was nothing left lol it was delicious

  172. 5 stars
This is the best Shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had, as well as my first attempt ever making it. It turned out perfect, the potatoes were so amazing and the flavor of the meat and vegetables was incredible. This will be the only way I ever make this again.

  173. 5 stars
Deeeeeelicious! I followed it precisely except I was out of rosemary. Yum! I like it saucier so added a bit more broth. Those were my only two deviations. thanks!

  174. 4 stars
I just made this recipe tonight. The rosemary kinda threw me off. Next time, I would probabaly make it without it or half the amount. Other than that, this was a very comforting meal.

  175. Just made this for my hubby! It is delicious! I stuck to the recipe with the ground sirloin except for a couple of swaps of ingredients simply due to what I had on hand. I used vegetable stock instead of beef since it’s what I had on hand. Also I used store bought premade mashed potatoes! Lol Hey, I had them on hand and they made life easy! Turned out so yummy!! Thank you for sharing the recipe!!

  176. 5 stars
This is an easy and absolutely delicious recipe. The fact that it can be made ahead and assembled and cooked when needed.

  177. 5 stars
Wonderful recipe! Made this yesterday evening. Never heard so much mmm-ing from my daughters! I had all the fresh herbs in my garden still, so used fresh instead of dry. And had no milk in fridge so subbed a mixture of heavy cream and sour cream, thinned with water.
My one daughter confessed that she never liked sheperds pie before. My secret… I couldn’t find my time worn recipe yesterday evening, so I used yours! And yours is going to stay my new go to!

  178. 5 stars
I thought the Shepherds pie was great! Very tasty and moist! I had also made the Meatloaf and it was wonderful and a weekly dish at our house!

  179. 5 stars
Absolutely perfect! So delicious. Last night I made this with beef and used the exact recipe which was as excellent as it could be. Husband approved and licked his plate!!!

    1. 5 stars
Amazing..I used turkey ground meat and it was delicious..hubby loved it as well..will definitely use this recipe again the next time I make Shepherds pie..Thanks for posting it!

  180. I could not get lamb so I used hamburger meat.
Followed the recipe exactly except I added extra broth to make it more moist. Excellent recipe.

  181. 5 stars
Oh. Em. Gee!!! This recipe turned out amazing!! I used the double recipe, and I used 4 small/ medium potatoes, and one medium sweet potato, because it had to be used, and it was absolutely amazing.
    5 stars!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    1. 5 stars
This dish was delicious! Everyone loved it and thought it was the best shepherds pie they had ever eaten. I added a stalk of celery and used frozen mixed vegetables in place of frozen carrots and peas. I also didn’t have thyme so I used marjoram instead.

    2. 5 stars
Best Shepards Pie I’ve ever tasted. I made this recipe with ground lamb twice and everyone loved it. Will only use this recipe from now on.

  182. 5 stars
Delicious ! Omitted the rosemary as my husband is not a fan but Wouldn’t change any other part of this recipe and will definitely make this again.

  183. 5 stars
So good! I’m making this for the second time in a week tonight! Great for a chilly fall/winter night. The first time I did not have parm cheese, I just topped it with a cheddar blend which was good! Tonight I made as written. It’s in the oven as we speak!

  184. 5 stars
We make shepard’s pie a lot and after trying this recipe, our family agrees this is the BEST we have ever had! We used frozen mixed veggies and also added shredded parm to the top. I didn’t have all of the seasonings so I used an “herbs de Provence” blend (which had all of the herbs needed plus a few!) We used an 8×8 dish and it was perfect. We are definitely saving this recipe!

  185. 5 stars
The only thing I will change the next time I make this dish is to omit the rosemary. It takes over the dish too much. Other than that, it’s delicious!

  186. 5 stars
My husband said it was the best he ever had. I will likely cut down on the butter just a bit or add an extra potato. Very delicious!

  187. 5 stars
I made this for dinner tonight, and it was absolutely delicious. I followed the recipe exactly, and would not change a thing.

  188. 5 stars
This recipe is great. Since I always add my twist to a recipe I made the following changes.
Used half ground beef and half ground lamb
    Added a diced jalapeño
    Doubled the Worcestershire sauce
Added fresh corn cut off the cob
Added a prepared packet of gravy using the cup of broth from the recipe
Sprinkled shedded melty cheese on top

    1. When you say you used a prepared packet of gravy using the cup of broth from the recipe. Did you add that to the shepherds pie mixture or as a gravy like topping?

  189. 5 stars
Awesome recipe, great flavor! I only made a few modifications. I added diced mushrooms, slightly more beef broth and a tablespoon of “Better than Bullion” to the meat. It’s delicious either way!

  190. 5 stars
Loved this recipe my 9 year old wouldn’t eat my sisters but he ate all of this one. The spices really create a wonderful bite.

  191. 5 stars
Loved it. Not for everyone but I also added a splash of bourbon to the ground beef as I was cooking that. Wife and picky 9-year-old son both loved it. Also skipped the cheese due to lactose intolerance, still very yummy.

  192. 5 stars
This is a very delicious recipe. It is totally worth making over and over. This will become a staple for our household. A great dish as things get colder outside.

  193. 4 stars
Tastes great! I used about 3/4 of a stick of butter instead of the whole stick. I also forgot to add the parm cheese to the potatoes. I sprinkled it on after it came out of the oven and it was still great.

  194. 5 stars
I used ground turkey and followed the filling instructions as far as seasoning, (double garlic) etc. The veggies were a matter of cleaning out the fridge ….parts of: parsnip, delicato squash, frozen peas, green beans, corn, and celery.
The topping was microwaved cauliflower mixed in food processer with cream cheese, butter and garlic powder.
It was a hit with my family.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

  195. 5 stars
The first time we made it we follow the recipe exactly and enjoyed it so much we are having it again.
Second time we have made this recipe, we added a bit more salt, bit less rosemary, increased of beef broth by a quarter of a cup and increase the vegetables by half of a cup. Just personal changes and I always like more veggies! Otherwise the taste

  196. Made your Shepard’s Pie recipe, my husband loved it and he is famous for being a fussy eater! It is delicious!!

  197. 5 stars
This was excellent: the entire family raved. I used venison instead of beef and added a bit of Cajun seasoning.

  198. 5 stars
I have made this Shepard’s Pie several times – It’s Delicious. Doubled the recipe in a 9 X 13 dish for potluck get togethers it’s always a big hit.

  199. 5 stars
First time I’ve ever made or eaten Shepherd’s Pie. I made it with caribou and it was SO good! I used less butter & milk instead of half & half. Only thing I need to do differently is to cut in half for me and my husband!

  200. 5 stars
This is an excellent recipe! The family loved it. It is the best shepherd’s pie I ever ateI
    Thank you very much!

  201. 5 stars
I can’t wait to start getting recipes. And can’t wait to try this shepherds pie. Making a double batch. Extra potatoes!

  202. 4 stars
What a great feel good meal on a cool rainy fall Sunday! Delicious! I added fresh mushrooms to the onion, used fresh parsley because I had some, and only had chicken broth so I used that. It was pretty easy, my family enjoyed it! Thanks for posting!

  203. 5 stars
I wish I could post an image of the final product. I grew up on a Sheep ranch and my mother would make this dish in the fall during potato harvest for all the workers in the field. I made this recipe exactly as recommended (with Lamb) and it was amazing. I will be making this in the future. I recommend baking it in a convection oven to get a nice brown to the potatoes.

    1. 5 stars
This is delicious. The best shepherds pie I’ve ever made. Followed the recipe exactly and wouldn’t change a thing. Thank you!

  204. 5 stars
A great base with lots of flavor. I used herbs that I had on hand including fresh thyme & parsley. I had left over mash to use up. I added a tiny bit of parm to them while re-warming them but also did a light sprinkle on top of the potatoes before popping in the oven.
I like the idea of single portions and used some mini copper dutch ovens I had, creating single serve portions. Fun! I’ll definitely be using this recipe again in the future. Just wish I could share a pic of my finished product….!

  205. 5 stars
This was a simple to prepare and very nice shepherds pie. Easy to be flexible with and add your own spin. Personally I like a little heat so I added a jalapeño to the onion step. And if you want a guilt free version try using the parsnip cauliflower purée over at love and lemons in place of potatoes. No dairy, no butter, no guilt and it was delicious with this!! Yummy!

  206. 5 stars
This recipe is the choice for birthday dinners for 2 kids. It’s perfect and the mashed potatoes have become my go to recipe as well.

  207. 5 stars
As said by previous reviews, prep time on this was wayyyyy longer than 20 mins, and both me and my partner teamed up to make it. Other than that, great recipe! Ultimate comfort food. Kids went back for seconds, which never happens. Yum!

  208. 5 stars
So delicious!!!! My husband and (11yr) daughter both went for seconds and enjoyed it as leftovers. This will become a staple in our home.

  209. 5 stars
Great recipe! One of my family’s favorites. Only thing I would add is to drain the grease left over from cooking the meat.

  210. 5 stars
This was a great recipe, I also doubled it and used a 9×13 pan. Served it with homemade mustard pickles and my husband had two large servings! Definitely on the rotation🙂

  211. 4 stars
Great recipe and dish. My only critique is that this recipe is quite light on the Worcestershire sauce. You can easily double the amount of that particular ingredient for enhanced flavor.

  212. 5 stars
Made it for the 2nd time for last night’s dinner. Both my husband and my nephew went back of seconds. Very easy to make and there’s room to add or subtract ingredients. We’re having leftovers for dinner tonight, & my husband is very happy about that.
    Thank you for sharing.

  213. 5 stars
I made a double batch of this on a whim… And it was absolutely delicious. The only things I did different were a can of mixed veggies instead of frozen and added a half cup of red wine. Thank you!

  214. 5 stars
My whole life I have never been a Shepard pie fan. Always trying something different. Wow! Just wow! I I I love this recipe. My family gobbled down the whole pan. Ty! I finally found a awesome recipe. Thanks for sharing….. this is so GOOD !!!!!

  215. 5 stars
outstanding! doubled the recipe using 90% lean beef peas/carrots/and corn, extra worcestershire sauce and some leftover roasted fresh tomatoes with the paste, better than bullion /one tsp of tomato paste/ a little butter in the beef mixture. this recipe signifies the start of the fall season, we all love it!

  216. 5 stars
I’ve made this several times, and most recently for a friend recovering from surgery. She just messaged me that her family loved it! I couldn’t take credit, so I forwarded your recipe. It really is the very best recipe!

  217. 5 stars
Absolutely a favorite to be added to fall and winter dishes.. I did use a frozen mix of peas, carrots, green beans and corn, and only cooked briefly to maintain a moist/gravy like consistency through oven baking. Thoroughly enjoyed the outcome, delish!! Tysm for sharing!!

  218. 5 stars
This was the first time I’d ever had Shephard’s Pie and it was wonderful. The meat/gravy was so rich and flavorful. We are definitely adding this one to our rotation!

  219. OMG! I just tied this recipe and it is as what my nieces called it, “the bomb”! I recommend this recipe 1000%!
    Thank you😊

  220. 5 stars
My family loves this recipe! I usually double it for our family of 7 and it works great. If there are any leftovers they get fought over.

  221. 5 stars
I don’t make Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage Pie often. Tried this recipe and my husband LOVED it. Wants it added to the meal rotation. So easy!

  222. 5 stars
Terrific recipe! I very much like the parmesan cheese & garlic powder incorporated into the mashed potatoes. I have always made my shepherds pie topped with sharp cheddar cheese.

  223. 5 stars
This was the first time I made shepherds pie and it was the best shepherds pie I’ve EVER had. That’s how good the recipe is! Followed it to a T and it came out perfectly 🙂

  224. Absolutely perfect! It took me an hour from start to finish but it was well worth it and definitely qualifies for the “made with love” label’

  225. 5 stars
Shepherds pie is my husband’s favorite dish…I only use this recipe and always make a double patch…it doesn’t last long. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!

  226. 5 stars
I’ve been using this recipe for the last three years and has become a family favorite, including at Thanksgiving!!! I’ve adjusted a little by removing pepper & W. Sauce, due to allergies, and added a layer of Swiss and pastry with crushed crackers on top. Also adjusted for Turkey, Vegetarian & Vegan and all taste FANTASTIC!

  227. 5 stars
My family loves this recipe so much!! Even my picky toddler can’t get enough of it! We make it at least every other week. Thank you!!

  228. 5 stars
You’re right, this is the best tasting Shepherds pie ever. I’m saving this to use over and over. We love bison and it was delicious plus there’s leftovers for tomorrow!

  229. I tried this recipe for the first time tonight and it was wonderful. Followed the directions exactly and it was a hit.

  230. 5 stars
Although its my first try to bake this, it came out to be very nice. My children loves it. I should bake it longer though.
    Thanks for the recipe.

  231. 5 stars
One of the best shepherd pres I’ve ever had, certainly the best I’ve ever made. I’ll continue using this recipe from now on. I used ground lamb, and followed everything pretty closely. Only difference is I used a 12 oz bag of mixed peas, carrots, corn and green beans, which was perfect amount and combination in my opinion.

    1. 5 stars
First time making Shepherds Pie. Didn’t have time to make potatoes so used ready made refrigerated mashed potatoes and added some garlic powder and butter. One of my favorite go to recipes. Delicious.

  232. 5 stars
Made this for my family tonight. It was a huge hit asking for second’s. My husband even ate his vegetables, lol. Wouldn’t change a thing.

    1. 5 stars
Delish!! I’m autistic and have some sensory issues with most veggies so I cooked the onion with some fresh carrot and celery and added some frozen riced cauliflower in the broth and blended it to a creamy texture with my immersion blender. It turned out perfectly! Delish with all the veggie flavor and nutrition but none of the weird textures 🙂

    2. 5 stars
I’ve made this twice now and it’s my son’s favorite. Takes awhile to get the potatoes and meat and vegetable mixture prepared but it’s worth it!

    1. 5 stars
I added more vegetables but followed the recipe. It was the best I have had ever!! And I made it!!!
Going to Save this recipe Amanda Finks!!!
      Excellent!!!!

  233. 5 stars
This is a wonderful recipe!!! Delicious and flavorful – very different from the run -of-the-mill shepherd’s pie! I used Idahoan instant spuds which worked very well on top. The parmesan cheese is a nice touch!!! Yum!

    1. No, you just need to be sure to cook the raw vegetables almost soft before baking. I did and was not aware of the difference other tasting amazing but crunchy. After a couple times, mince them and it’s delicious!!

  234. 5 stars
So happy to find your site! Made this dish for two finicky eaters. We are still letting 3yr old give it another try but the 1yr old ate it with gusto. And she’s the real tough one. Grand Pop loves it too. Easy to keep on rotation with basic ingredients. Thank you, it’s a keeper!

    1. Is there a reason that it calls for the herbs to be dried? I prefer fresh, but don’t know if that would somehow mess it up.

    2. 5 stars
Very good flavor- I used 1/2 of butter in recipe and potatoes were creamy and flavorful. I would double the peas, carrots and corn next time. Great comfort food meal!

    3. 5 stars
You could use fresh but it’s a lot easier and quicker with frozen. 🙂 I would steer clear of canned, it would ruin the flavor.

    4. 5 stars
I use fresh carrots, corn, and parsnips. I sauté them a little before adding. Still do frozen peas because I prefer them over canned and don’t want to mess with prepping fresh.

  235. 5 stars
All your recipes are really delicious. I did make this Shepperd Pie and it’s truly delicious. This can feed a big crowd on Game day. It’s so popular with my family.

  236. 5 stars
Ok. I gave this a 5 star because it really is delicious, but i have a complaint!
20 minute prep time! Give me a massive break. Exaggeration abounds. It takes longer than that to gather the ingredients let alone prepare them. Let’s say 45 minutes prep time – if you are quick and with no distractions. Someone is on a different time scale. But again the recipe is a delicious one and definitely worth the “prep time”.
Next time i will make extra potatoes – licking the bowl was a treat.

    1. 5 stars
I used canned corn, fresh cut carrots and subbed canned cut green beans for the peas, was still so yummy. Was a lot more prep time than I was expecting for a shepherds pie (first time ever making one) but it was easy and worth it and will make again and sure to get easier once I get the recipe memorized.

    2. 5 stars
This recipe is great! I used ketchup instead of tomato paste, and used instant mashed potatoes, a good brand, not the basic store brand. It made it so much easier, and I like these potatoes better than any I could have mashed myself.

    3. 5 stars
Using Idahoan instant potatoes was delicious and a real time saver. Better than my mashed potatoes from scratch.

    4. I don’t know if it is the case for this recipe, but typically recipes don’t count gathering/prepping time, and assume that you have the ingredients nearby and measured out ready to go.

  237. 5 stars
Absolutely LOVE this recipe! Listen, I do not enjoy cooking. It’s just not something that’s ever interested me, but I cook because I have to eat. This receipt was so straightforward and simple, there was no room in wording that make me question if I was doing it right. It was easy, pretty fast, and super tasty! Such comfort food, and you can even make a cute pattern on the top of your potatoes with a fork! Thank you for this recipe!!

  238. 4 stars
This recipe was super easy to follow and prepare and eat! Personally just for next time I might only use 3/4 of a stick of the unsalted butter. Otherwise the flavors were delicious.

  239. 5 stars
Great recipe, I use lamb. Turns out perfect every time. Funny tho, each time the portion changes online (1x, 2x, 3x) you changed the poundage of the amout but each time it still says 2 large potatoes. That’s ok, I just eyeballed it anyway.

  240. 5 stars
    Love this recipe so much.

For people with less time on their hands, 8oz idohoan buttery instant mashed potatoes are still super yummy! Added half the butter and half and half, same amount of spices and they turned out great.

  241. 5 stars
Honestly, I’ve been making Sheperd’s pie for decades now, and always liked it, but never loved it — this is my new go to! This was absolutely incredible. I may not have measured precisely, and I subbed frozen veggies for fresh, but the addition of tomato paste and Worcestershire made this a win. Only thing missing – a link to pin this on Pinterest for easy saving!

  242. 4 stars
I made this and everyone enjoyed it but I really think it needs a few modifications. The grease definitely needs to be drained off after browning because mine ended up too greasy. I had to mop grease off the top with a paper towel after baking. The dish was overly salty on the whole and the recipe for the mashed potatoe topping seemed a bit off. I couldn’t bring myself to add the whole amount of butter recommended and it also just seemed to be a thinner layer of potatoe than I usually see I’m a shepherd’s pie. But, on the whole, a pretty good recipe.

  243. 5 stars
The whole family loved this dish! I didn’t have enough mashed potatoes so I added a layer of tater tots on top which were definitely a hit with the kids. Overall, great flavor and an easy dish to prepare.

  244. 5 stars
This is by far the best tasting shepherd’s pie recipe I’ve ever had. It’s easy to prepare and even my picky eaters gobble it up!

  245. Is th measurement for the Worchestershire sauce 1 Tablespoon ? I look forward to making this and am concerned for 1 Tablespoon. Thanks and make it a good day.

  246. 5 stars
Wow so delicious! I’ve always loved this meal but have never made it because my daughter and husband have had versions they hated…. Well they sure enjoyed this ! Thanks for an awesome recipe 👍🏻😀

    1. 5 stars
This is the best Sheppard’s pie recipe I have tried in a very long time! Lots of flavor and creamy garlic & cheese potatoe topping. Yum!

    2. 5 stars
This recipe is awesome! I followed the recipe except I didn’t have Worcestershire sauce (replaced with 2 tsp soy sauce and 1 tsp apple cider and red chili powder). I made it as Shepard’s pie and a deconstructed Shepard’s pie. The second time I added way more fresh carrots and frozen peas to get more veggies in my kids and the kids devoured it that I barely had enough food for me. This mashed recipe was phenomenal. Definitely, will include as part of the rotation!

I made this for dinner (drained the juices from the meat prior to adding Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste) and it was a hit. I had family over so I tripled the receipt so we can have leftovers. Didn’t have much leftovers 😂, everyone enjoyed. Definitely keeping this receipt. Thank you for sharing.

Hands down best shephards pie recipe I’ve tried yet. Little greesy but I’ll just cut back on the butter next time.

Great recipe! It was a hit! Make sure to have all of your ingredients ready to go for a dish like this so you’re not scrambling around the kitchen. I’d also recommend putting the potatoes on while you are cooking the meat to save time.

I think I may use the potato recipe as a side dish in another meal because they are just so buttery and savory.

I did. I subbed things simply to use what I had on hand. Fresh carrots, frozen peas, canned corn and cheddar cheese. I switched tomato sauce for the paste, and simmered it down a little more. It was perfect consistency and delish. Everyone loved it! I’ll definitely make this again.

This was so good, out of all the Shepherd pie recipes I am glad that I picked this one!!! I will be making this for sure in the colder months ahead.

This was delicious! Only had 3 potatoes, 2 Russet and 1 Sweet potato. Combined them to make a thin topping. The addition of Parmesan cheese and spices put the potatoes over the top. Was wondering about the calorie content, is 400 calories correct?

Delicious! The seasonings make the difference. Unused ground turkey and beef broth to give it that beefy flavor. Would definitely make again.

The best ever…quick and easy and the best tasting Sheppards pie I’ve ever had!! Can’t ever make enough for my family.

Excellent recipe, but in honour of my grandma who made this for us frequently, 50 years ago, I added maple baked beans, so I “ britished it up a bit”. It was delicious.

Wow! This Shepherd’s Pie recipe is delicious. I made it for the first time tonight and my family loved it. My 11 year old said it was in her top 3 favorite recipes now. I made the recipe as written, just had to sub gluten free flour. Turned out perfect!

This was delicious. I did add a bit more Worcestershire because I love it and I was out of carrots but had frozen peas and corn. So I added chopped cabbage that I needed to use with the onions. This is a perfect Shepherds pie recipe!

I made this tonight for dinner. I accidentally thawed cubed beef steak instead of ground beef. (I still chopped it up into small pieces and used it.) I also added 1/2 cup red wine and 1/2 cup veggie broth instead of one cup of beef broth. I also didn’t have any corn or mixed veggies so instead I used a can of fire roasted tomatoes and it still turned out great!! I also added shredded ghost pepper cheese instead of parm. I will definitely make this again!! 😍🤤🤤🤤😍

This was so good and easy to make. Thank you for the recipe. I did make it with a can of Manwich sauce in replace of tomato paste, because I didn’t have any on hand. Turned out super yummy!

  258. Made this for my brother and his wife for the freezer when their baby came early. They are begging me
To make it again. Best they ever had they said. I think the definite thing that makes it is the rosemary.

    Awesome recipient

My second time making this recipe, and it’s just as delicious as the first time. My folks loved it, too!

The first time I made it, I made the mashed potatoes according to the recipe – so good! (My new go-to recipe for homemade mashed potatoes.) This time, as a time saver, I used the Bob Evans mashed potatoes from the refrigerator section of the grocery store. I mixed them up with a couple tablespoons of butter and garlic powder, then added the parmesan cheese. It turned out just as tasty!

    Thanks for the recipe.

  260. I’ve made this twice now. Once following the recipe with minor changes such as seasoning since I found I didn’t have fresh garlic or thyme. Family loved it! Second time I used milk rather then half and half. Still a huge success. Usually I have at least a serving left of dinner they can have for lunch the next day, but neither time have I had so much as a spoonful, but neither have they asked for a snack after. 🙂

It was runny and had a lot of grease, next time I would brown & drain meat mixture before mixing in spices and Tomato Paste. My husband and granddaughter like it though they thought it a bit runny also.

  262. Last year about this time, made this for “Girls Week” at St. George Island, FL, 8 of us. I made no side sides, but 1 of the ladies cut tomatoes with mozzarella cheese. We almost ate all of it. everyone raved! Then, we simply had to ,finish it! This recipe is so easy to follow, needs no adjusting, except size, maybe.
I made some for my boss & his wife when he was recovering from knee surgery. They loved it. Also made for my son & girlfriend; they were totally impressed. Lamb is new to her; I introduced lamb during holidays over 6 years ago. The ground lamb is the best; never tried this with beef.
I’m taking your marvelous Shepherd’s Pie again this weekend, (tomorrow) by request. I added apple salad & baked butternut squash this time.
You did great, thank you so much from all of us. Sooooooooo yummy!!!!! And nutritious.

Perfection. Added a little layer of cheddar cheese between meat/potato layers. Made brown gravy and ate this over biscuits!

This is by far the best Shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had. I’ve made it twice—once all beef and once half pan half beef. I prefer the all beef. It was so good I couldn’t wait to make it again.

  267. I tried this recipe today. I did not have any tomato paste so I substituted ketchup. It was delicious and I definitely will make it again. My husband said it was very tasty.’ Thank you. I also did not use paarmesan cheese but shredded sharp cheddar.

Hello. Do I need to drain the fat after browning the beef? Looking forward to a great evening dinner.
    Thanks, John.

Loved this recipe so much! It is easy to follow and the result is delicious. The mashed potatoes with the cheese gave the flavor an extra twist. Thank you so much for this recipe. Will definitely be doing it again!

This recipe turned out great, but it took way more time than the recipe described. I spent over 2 and half hours preparing this dish for my family as it was described. Also, I would recommend using a fork and putting furrows on top of the dish right before you put it in the oven, and also consider spraying it with a bit of cooking spray. That should crisp the top right off for a nice finish.

I remember Shepherds pie from my childhood. I always found it bland and gross. Not this recipe! So simple and easy to make yet packed with flavour. Keeps well so good for work lunches. Will make again

The best Shepards’s (cottage) pie I’ve ever made!!! The mashed potatoes on top are also delicious, I would use that recipe for mash on its own it’s so good! The recipe was so easy to follow and the video was a good addition for extra reference. Thank you for posting an incredible recipe and sharing it with people like myself who really appreciate a hearty and tasty meal!

This was my first time making a shepherds pie. I have avoided them because my mom used to make them all the time and I did not like it. My husband asked for it so I gave it a shot and omg it was so good!! Nothing like I remember! (Sorry mom). Will definitely be making this again.

This is absolutely delicious and would definitely work for feeding company at the house. It was no trouble to make either. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I don’t eat beef & was wondering if ground chicken would work? I’ve been hungry for Sheppard’s pie for awhile, your recipe looks delicious & easy to follow.

Great recipe! I added fresh grated horseradish and fresh grated ginger. Also, ground to Turmeric and ground curry powder for extra flavor and health benefits.
