The Best Classic Shepherd’s Pie – AKA Shepards Pie or Cottage Pie. Ground Beef (or lamb) with vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with cheesy mashed potatoes, and baked.

Classic Shepards Pie on a plate

Shepherd’s Pie

So, this is how you spell it:  Shepherd’s Pie.  But, from doing a quick google search, it came to my attention that TONS of people think it’s Shepards Pie.

Irish Shepherd’s Pie

Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie would actually call for ground lamb.  The difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie is the meat.  Cottage Pie uses ground beef, while Shepherd’s Pie uses ground lamb.

I called this recipe Shepherd’s Pie.  But, I wrote the recipe so that you could use ground beef or ground lamb.

I typically use ground beef because it is widely available.  But, for a special occasion, like St. Patricks day, I would use ground lamb.

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

(Note – The full printable recipe is at the bottom of this post)

Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Making the best Shepherd’s Pie is not difficult.  But, there are a few steps to it.  You have to make the meat mixture, the mashed potatoes, assemble the casserole, and bake it.

I find that the easiest way to make this dish is to work ahead.  You could make the beef or lamb mixture ahead of time.  Or, you could make the mashed potatoes ahead of time.

You could also make the whole recipe ahead of time.  Just assemble the casserole, cover the dish, and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it.  I find it is best to bake it within 3 days of preparing it.

When you are ready to bake it, take it out of the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before you need to bake it to let it start coming to room temperature.  Uncover it, and bake.

Ingredients

Meat Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 lb. 90% lean ground beef -or ground lamb
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves -minced
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup frozen mixed peas & carrots*
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels

Potato Topping:

  • 1 ½ - 2 lb. russet potatoes -about 2 large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter -1 stick
  • 1/3 cup half & half
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Instructions

Make the Meat Filling.

  • Add the oil to a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the onions. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef (or ground lamb) to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Add the parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and and pepper. Stir well. Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the flour and tomato paste. Stir until well incorporated and no clumps of tomato paste remain.
  • Add the broth, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen corn. Bring the liquid to a boil then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Set the meat mixture aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Make the potato topping.

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot. Cover the potatoes with water. Bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return the potatoes to the hot pot. Let the potatoes rest in the hot pot for 1 minute to evaporate any remaining liquid.
  • Add butter, half & half, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes and stir until all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Add the parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Stir until well combined.

Assemble the casserole.

  • Pour the meat mixture into a 9x9 (or 7x11) inch baking dish. Spread it out into an even layer. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat. Carefully spread into an even layer.
  • If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet so that the filling doesn’t bubble over into your oven. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.** Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

*If you can’t find frozen mixed peas and carrots, you could use ½ cup frozen peas and ½ cup frozen sliced carrots.
**Bake at 400° F.  Start preheating the oven after you make the meat mixture (listed in step 6).

What a hit! Since I used 93% ground beef I did have to add a little more beef stock (I also used lower sodium). My husband and I are not fans of rosemary so it was left out all together. It was so balanced and full of flavor! I offered it to everyone available in the house (total of 3 men plus myself) and even the picky eater ate 2 helpings! Nobody added additional table salt either!! Huge win for me!!

I love this recipe. It’s officially in my rotation. It’s honestly perfect as is but I always add a bit more tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce.

My wife made a cottage pie for me and it was pretty good, but I decided to try and make one myself. After making this, she loves this recipe more than her own, (which was her mother’s) Definitely a good meal.

Excellent dish! I was out of Worcestershire Sauce so I substituted with a little A1 Sauce and it still came out delicious. I did also make the potatoes first because it took me a while to peel, cut and boil them, and I didn’t want the meat to be sitting out that long. Doubled the recipe for my family of 6 and it was a hit👍👍

I’ve been eating shepherd’s pie for many decades..if you think about it it’s been 60 years of eating shepherd’s pie, and still not tired of eating it..!!!!🤙🤩

  5. 5 stars
Amazing!!!! I made this tonight and my picky 13 year old, and husband both said put this on the regular rotation. Let’s not get seconds so we can have leftovers for lunch.

  6. I’ve made other Shepherd’s Pie recipes in the past and they’ve always been bland and too juicy or too dry, this one had the perfect amount of spices and liquid, also adding the flour helped to thicken what liquid there was to create more of a gravy than a soup. I appreciated that addition. For the potatoes, I think people need to make them the way they prefer their mashed potatoes. I added a few more potatoes and added more salt, a little cheddar cheese and sprinkled paprika on top before baking. I also went out on a limb and added some French’s crispy fried onions on top of the beef mixture before adding the potatoes, just to add a little umph. I agree with the other comments, it takes longer and makes less than described. I spent exactly 2 hours, from start to finish and it fed 4, and that’s if one of the 4 is a small child so in reality, you’ll probably yield enough for 3 hungry folks. Enjoy! This is a fantastic recipe and one that’s easily tweaked to your taste. That’s what I love about cooking. In Sinatra’s words, “I did it my way”

AMAZING- top 10 of my fave dishes, hands down. I increased recipe by 50% for more servings, used fresh rosemary & added dash of nutmeg to the mashed potatoes; and I’ll add that 1/2 block of cream cheese is another fantastic cheese to use instead of Parmesan too.
Thank you for the great recipe!

    2. 5 stars
Excellent recipe! Made this gluten free, using a heaping tablespoon of potato starch vs the 2 Tbs of flour. I also used instant mashed potatoes to simplify that step, doctoring up per the recipe. Really great flavor all around!

  7. 4 stars
This is a really good recipe that I have made several times. This time I made it for my husband, who is in Rehab following brain surgery. He has not been interested in eating, but tonight when I take some to him, I bet his appetite comes back! I have substituted both already prepared and quick cooked mashed potatoes but nothing beats mashed potatoes from scratch.

  8. 5 stars
Hi, thank you for this recipe! I have made it many times and often gift it as a freezer meal. I am wondering if anyone has made this GLUTEN FREE? What can I use instead of the flour to thicen up the gravy?

    Thank you in advance!!

    1. 5 stars
I made this with gluten-free flour blend (a 1-1 substitute) and it worked great. I would think corn starch, arrowroot, or tapioca flour would all also work well.

  9. 5 stars
Ive never really been good at cooking, i wanted to surprise my husband with a home cooked meal and surprised him with this dish, it turned out phenomenal, he said this was the best thing ive ever cooked before, 10/10!

  10. 5 stars
Made this for my daughter’s 9/1 Harry Potter party, and everyone loved it- teens , 20s, and 50s. 😃 I am making it again tonight for dinner. Tip: Start hearing water for potatoes as the meat cooks to save on time.

    1. 5 stars
I tried it, never having made it before. I didn’t have enough beef. We are a house full of bachelor’s. So I used Jimmy Dean regular sausage to round it out. Made the stick out of that beef bullion paste in a jar. Extra veggies.

I was letting it cool. Came back and they were treating into it. I was lucky to come away with all my fingers attached

      1. Love your critique and humor and am impressed enough with your comments to make it Thurs. evening for a hungry group of assorted aged folks coming for a Bible Study (college students to elderly!) to try it with confidence! Thank you for a great smile!

  11. 5 stars
Loved this! First time cooking a meal I loved when I was back in school, man this hits the spot. Tastes amazing!
Incredible work making the recipe easy-to-follow 🙌

  12. 5 stars
Incredibly delicious! So savory. I used fresh carrots since my family hates peas and they worked beautifully. I used left over mashed potatoes which I had on hand. Just so yummy! Thank you!

    1. 5 stars
Delicious recipe! I made this vegan with TVP, homemade Worcestershire sauce, and soy milk and it was a great dinner for a fall night. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  13. 5 stars
If you want to triple the recipe make sure you check amount of each ingredient because they aren’t all tripled. Look it potato amounts and butter. After corrections it was great

  14. 5 stars
My go to Sheppard’s pie recipe. Made it a hand full on times with whatever leftover meat I had left. Perfect for clearing out the fridge.

  15. 5 stars
I’ve been making Shepard’s Pie for years now but decided to try your recipe. I’m glad I did! My husband loved it. The Parmesan cheese instead of cheddar was a winner. The extra butter in the potatoes made them smooth and flavorful. This recipe is a keeper. Thanks

  16. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing. Full of so much flavor and is easy to prepare. My family loves the taste of this very special dish.

  17. 5 stars
I absolutely loved this! I did add about a teaspoon of A-1 sauce and extra garlic to the beef, and about a 1/4 teaspoon more salt in both layers and pepper in the taters, but I loved this!! I learned the hard way not to make the potatoes first or they’re hard to spread, but it was so delicious anyway! I made this for myself for my birthday dinner. Thank you!!

  18. I made this recipe today. My husband and I both love it. The flavors are great!! The only thing I would say is you need to change your prep time. No way it only takes 20 minutes. I was in my kitchen for 2 hrs. before I even put it in the oven.

  19. 5 stars
I’ve made this for my daughter several times — she really enjoys it!!!! DEFINITELY takes a whole lot longer than 20 minutes to prepare, and I am an experienced cook. Still, definitely worth making! Thank you for the recipe!

  20. 5 stars
This was easy to do, though took longer than my standard and less sophisticated version. The tastiest Shepherd’s Pie I have ever had – seconds were requested all round!

  21. 5 stars
Very good recipe. 2nd time made I cut the herb amounts in half so not as strong tasting. For some family members they liked it better. But truly look forward to eating this Shepherd’s Pie!!!

  22. 5 stars
This has become our favorite shepherd pie recipe! I’ve taken it to a grieving family who was not only appreciative, but they loved it as well. Surprisingly, I don’t have rosemary, so that was left out.
Tonight I used mashed cauliflower in place of the potatoes, so I’m sure it won’t be AS good, because potatoes are just better, but I’m so looking forward to it! 23 minutes to go!
    Thank you.

  23. 5 stars
Made the recipe and everyone loved it. My only lazy “gripe” is that recipes should have a Metric measurement toggle button.

  24. 5 stars
This recipe was delish. The gravy is very savory. I doubled it but only used half a teaspoon rosemary and it tasted heavenly.

  25. Made this in my cast iron and it turned out perfectly! I used about 5 medium sized potatoes, but would probably use 2 more next time. I like a thicker potato layer. Otherwise very delicious!

  26. 5 stars
Amazing recipe I’ve made it three times now and it’s super simple and easy to follow instructions. Each time I make it I make some modifications if I don’t have certain ingredients, and it still comes out flawless. 100% recommend

  27. Freakin delicious! I added a quarter cup of red wine to the meat, omitted the flour, used olive oil instead of butter! Topped the potatoes with bacon bits and Habanero Cheddar cheese. Holy yummy bat man.

  28. 5 stars
Thi sis my “go to” recipe for Shepard’s Pie. I make it all the time. I would only recommend that you chop your rosemary, don’t leave it out, it is an essential flavor. I’ve made this for my husband and me and our kids and everyone loves it Great job on this recipe!

  29. This is absolutely the best shepherd pie recipe! I didn’t have any tomato paste or ketchup. I did have a can of spicy tomato soup. I used that and a beef bullion and an 1/4 cup of water…instead of the beef broth and tomato paste. It is absolutely AMAZING. I’ve made this recipe 6 times in the last two months. Thank you so much!

  30. 5 stars
Delicious! I have made it two times. The only thing I changed was the type of ground meat, because I don’t eat red meat. The first time I used ground turkey, and the second time ground chicken. My husband and I love it!!

  31. 5 stars
YUM! Best shepherd’s pie I have ever tasted! I followed the exact recipe & it turned out great. This recipe is a keeper for sure. Thank you!

  32. 5 stars
This recipe is AMAZING I made this for my family and they loved it! One thing you can do to take this to the next level if you have the time is to put it into a pie crust. Real easy and simple and gives you a crunch in the bite.

  33. 5 stars
Love this recipe; all ingredients readily available. So that kids get a little more vitamins, I added some steamed spinach and frozen broccoli florets.

  34. 5 stars
While I was growing up and my parents had dinner parties any time they served leg of lamb I would pester mom for Shepherds Pie. Of course if I wanted it I had to do some work. I would take the left over leg of lamb and begin to cut of the meat from the bone making sure it was in small pieces and filled up 4 cups of small pieces. Mom used dark gravy instead of beef broth and peas (no carrots). Lastly this was usually a dinner for the kids and just a simple mashed potato topping could have been made with Potato Buds and shredded cheddar mixed in and then laid onto and baked to perfection. (Always up to the chef on times and temps)
All I find in stores is Cottage Pies that they still call Shepherds Pie. I usually ask if they have ever seen a shepherd with a bunch of cows. Simple meal for the family and great way to get children to eat lamb.

  35. 5 stars
I was latter afraid of the rosemary, as itcould overwhelm. However, made as written and this was delicious! Thanks

  36. 5 stars
Made this with chopped left-over leg of lamb meat….very tasty. 5 Stars for sure. Broiled it on high the last 4 minutes to get a top crust that was browned and a tad crispy.
Have used several recipes thru the decades….this is the best. Highly recommend….except if you are on a diet…cuz you will overeat if this is your dinner.
If you want a airy potato topping, take two egg whites, whip them, add them to the mashed potatoes and gently stir in….it will brown a bit better and be more fluffy of a topping. Not necessary with this excellent recipe…just an add if desired.

  37. 5 stars
Can’t wait to make this tonight; quick question though,..do you not drain the meat after it’s done cooking?!

  38. 5 stars
Was good! I used soy sauce in replacement of worcestershire as I didn’t have thar on hand, didn’t add rosemary as I’m not a fan of that herb. Used ketchup instead of tomatoe paste, as I didn’t want to open a can and waste the rest. Even though I didn’t follow to a T, still turned out well.

  39. 5 stars
When involuntary yum sounds are all that can be heard, you know it’s a hit. Absolutely delicious!

  40. 5 stars
This dish was delicious. Was my first time making a shepherds pie. We added a pork mince into the beef mix and actually did more mince. My family enjoys spice so we added extra paprika, Cayenne pepper and cumin. Loved the base of the dish and a great idea to work from. Thank you so much.

  41. 5 stars
Just finished supper. This recipe is definately 5+ stars. My brother and I throughly enjoyed every bite! Followed the recipe as printed. Yummy!! Thanks so much!!!!

  42. Thank You! or Merci beaucoup!
I printed out your recipe and will seal it since this classic is worth using and keeping :-)).
    Love – Martha

So far the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I’ve tried. The proportions are just right and the instructions are detailed and clear. Thanks Amanda for sharing your recipe with us. 😍👍🏻

    1. 5 stars
Keep coming back to this recipe because it’s a winner! It’s so good my 5 year old son requested it for his birthday dinner, and that’s saying a lot. Thank you!

  44. 5 stars
Mom used to make this a couple times a month. So glad to find this recipe! It’s on my list of dishes to make ahead of time next month.

  45. 5 stars
This was truly the best and easiest Shepherd’s Pie recipe yet. I might add a few more veggies, just cuz. Otherwise this was a pleasure to make, serve, and eat.

  46. 5 stars
I make a version that I call flockers pie. We raise mudcovy ducks. Substitute ground duck. Works quite well.

  47. 5 stars
Fantastic recipe! I never leave comments but this totally deserves it. Made this for my husband and I and we had trouble not finishing the entire pan. It was even better the second day. I didn’t have frozen carrots so I steamed some fresh and they were perfect in the dish. Can’t wait to make this again!

  48. 5 stars
Love this. Make again and again!!! Tonight i did use ketchup instead of paste (didnt have any) and still great!!!

  49. 5 stars
This dish is very good however the “Prep time” is not accurate unless you have someone else assemble everything. I don’t mind spending time creating a meal but a more accurate prep time would be appreciated in the future. The filling is delicious and so is the potato topping, I will make this again and again, but will reduce the amount of potatoes (maybe my two large potatoes were too large).

  50. This is the best Shepherds pie recipe I’ve found. This is a keeper, I cook for people and they just love it. Thank you!.

  51. 5 stars
I tried your “The Best Sheperds Pie,” recipe and my family loved it. Thanks for the recipe it was delicious and easy to make.

  52. 5 stars
I love this recipe! It is so easy to make and just as tasty. I used my cast iron skillet to make the meat filling, bake the dish, and had one less dish to wash

  53. 5 stars
Great recipe! I used ground turkey and chicken broth. I skipped the Worstershire. Insptead of the tomato paste and flour, I added a 16 oz jar of garden vegetable soup. For other veggies, I used a frozen corn, carrot, green beans combo. I’ve made it for my household and to take to a friend recovering from shoulder surgery. She is quite a good cook; her father, a chef taught her much. She said this was the best Shepherd’s pie she’d ever had. Thanks for a great recipe. 😊

  54. 5 stars
It really is the best Shepard pie recipe ever! Prepared exactly as written, wouldn’t change a thing. Delicious ultimate comfort food!!

  55. 5 stars
I use 1# each of lean ground beef and lamb. A whole head of garlic, fresh parsley. Note: the recipe#2 says a 7×11 pan. Never gonna happen. It overflows a 9×13. I mound the spuds down the center to use them all, once the pan is covered.

  56. 5 stars
    A definite keeper
Added a can of mushroom soup on top of vegetables. The seasoning was spot on. Will fix this again.

  57. I have made this recipe a couple of times. It is my go to, love the smell of lamb, cause I love it. The leftovers are amazing, thank you so much for a great recipe.

  58. 5 stars
Wow, this was really good! I used instant potatoes for the topping. I don’t usually eat a lot, and I went back for thirds! Definitely going to add this to the recipe box.

  59. 5 stars
EXCELLENT!! Terrific recipe!! Made it 4 times recently for friends and neighbors. Everyone loves it!! Thank you!!!

  60. 4 stars
Great recipe. Save yourself a little time and frustration and make yourself a good rue before you start. Recipe leaves things a tad wet for my taste. But the flavors are great. I used chopped beef and made a stock from bone marrow. So good.

  61. 5 stars
Love this recipe, super easy to put together and flavorful. I use ground lamb because I love lamb but I made it with lean ground beef too and that’s just as good. This is a recipe that if you have a helper can be made faster such as one grating cheese or chopping onion and garlic and prepping potatoes. While my fiancé browns the meat I add the herbs and other ingredients. Total comfort food and no need to serve with anything else except maybe a small salad.

  62. 5 stars
made this for senior community bingo and every one, and I mean every one, loved it and requested the recipe saying it was the best they ever had! It is in my recipe file.

  63. 5 stars
Delicious! I even added some red wine in with the stock and can’t believe how good this is.
    Definitely will make it again

  64. 5 stars
Honestly! This recipe is SO good. We made it for a church group tonight and they were coming up for seconds.

  65. 5 stars
I’ve got the pie in the oven! The only thing I didn’t have was half and half but it’s not going to hurt the dish. It’ll be enough for leftovers too!! My family is going to love it, I just know.

  66. 5 stars
This was delicious! The best one I’ve ever made. The only thing i didn’t add was the garlic in the potatoes and that’s only because it’s my preference. My husband has asked me to make it again!

  67. 5 stars
    help me out here, guys!
Has anyone got advice on where to find (and what type of) 2lbs spuds?
2 potatoes around here do NOT weigh 3-4 lbs!

That aside, very tasty! I make it all the time

  68. 5 stars
I just made this today and it turned out so delicious! The recipe is so easy to follow and quick to make. My husband and I like things spicy, so I added a Tbsp of red chili peppers and a bit more of the beef stock because mine was getting a bit thick. I also didn’t have russet potatoes, so I ended up using yellow flesh potatoes, but they worked just fine. At the end of it all, my husband and I loved it! This is definitely a new recipe in my regular rotation.

  69. 5 stars
Made this for my family. Never had made it before. Followed recipe exactly and everyone loved it. It did have an overwhelming taste of rosemary that I will leave out next time but definitely a keeper!

    1. 5 stars
First time tried this recipe. Everyone literally inhaled it! I have a lot of mouths to feed, so I doubled the recipe and I added a light topping of shredded cheddar cheese on top of the potato mixture. Delicious! I had one question though…I didn’t see mention of whether to drain the grease after cooking the meat, or to keep all of it as part of the “gravy” mixture, so I drained most of the fat and added extra beef broth. If I failed, it still was amazing!

    2. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe several times know.
Family loves it. Only problem I have with it
is I eat way too much of it.
I just wanted to ad… you can freeze it.
      I make a large amount (makes 4). I use the disposable aluminum foil 8″ x 8″ containers
      w/ same type of lids.
We eat 1, give 1 away, and freeze 2
They’re good in the freezer for 6 months.

    3. 5 stars
First time having Shepherds pie and I never would have imagined it tastes this good. This recipe is the only one I’ve had but it HITS.

    1. 5 stars
I have made this before and my family loved it. What I am wondering is has anyone tried to put it together and freeze it to bake later? How would one go about it?

    1. 5 stars
I’m making this for the second time in three days, my husband and I loved it! The only step I’d add is to remember to drain the hamburger before adding in the garlic and Worcester sauce. It could be easy to forget if you are just going step by step.

It really is even better reheated the next day! Yum.
Thank you SO much for this fantastic recipe!

    2. 5 stars
It funny,I’m from Indiana also. Zionsville was close to us and been there many times. Your recipe is very similar to my Grandma’s, which I loved. Now I love to cook, and can’t wait to make this. One question. Is there a reason you use frozen vegetables or can I use caned as well.

Wonderful recipe. I substituted ground venison and added for the meat and added a tbd of g butter and included some mushrooms pan roasted and added to the base. Thank you so for sharing this recipe. It was wonderful even with the changes.

  71. I am from South Africa so I had to google what half and half is. The pie was delicious, and will definitely be my go-to recipe. Thank you for sharing.

  72. 5 stars
Wonderful recipe! I used 7 medium potatoes and a little more half and half for the mashed potatoes. I also used one cup each of the peas, carrots and corn. It was the best Shepherds Pie I’ve ever had.

  73. 5 stars
This is a phenomenal recipe! Highly recommend! We add extra Worcestershire sauce since the word is long and hard to pronounce and it enhances the flavor! Caveat: the prep time listed here is cheating the system somehow. It took me a full hour running around at record speed before it got to the oven bake time. Enjoy!!!

As a cancer patient w/ swallowing challenges I’ve been looking for healthy options. This has become a staple for me. Really tasty and even better as left overs.

  75. 5 stars
We really enjoy this recipe.. we never have peas on hand, so I use canned string beans and cut those in half so they’re more the size with the carrot pieces. What I like about this dish is I can make the mashed potatoes during the day so when it comes time to preparing the meat it seems to be a lot easier… even though it’s technically the same amount of work and time… 🤣😉

    Delicious!

I added a little red wine to it. This was a house crowd pleaser. My 8 year old, and 3 year old loved it!!!

Seemed to be a typo either in the amount of beef or the amount of potatoes. Weighed another potato after we finished layering and they were nearly 1 pound each on the money. The meat and veggies were 1 1/2 inches deep and only about 1/2 inch of potatoes. Either needed to cut the beef part in half or double the potato’s. Taste thought is 10/10. Thanks!

Made this for the first time. The only thing I changed was adding japanese golden curry paste. With a sprinkle of cheddar after potatoes were golden brown, my son is sometimes picky and my fiance was skeptical. I used 2xs recipe and let me say it was phenomenal. I thought I’d have lord of left overs, but nope husband had 3 helpings, my son and I had 2. New favorite thank you!!!

      Shaun,
I weighed my russet potatoes in the store and bought 1 1/2 pounds, which was 4 good size russet potatoes and the meat layer was the same depth as my mashed potato layer. This recipe is a keeper for us.

This has to be the best Shepherd Pie ever made.Made multiple times. Due to Husband is a picky eater.
Due to cost of groceries, could the filling be made then FREEZED for future meal. When ready to make defrost then add mash potatoes.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Bkkajn

This has become a family favorite and I often make it for guests too, who always love it! In fact I am making it again today for my husband and I and thought I should finally give compliments to the original chef for the recipe! It is delicious! I use lamb when I make it by the way!

  80. 5 stars
This recipe was amazing! My family was crazy for it! Most definitely will be a main staple in my cooking routine!!! Minor changes: I used butter instead of oil, and cooked fresh carrots and celery with the onions. I only had fresh rosemary on hand, but it all turned out yummmmmy.

  81. 5 stars
Best ever Shepherd’s. So much flavour. I used half cauliflower and half potato for topping and added some mushrooms to the meat (to get some extra vegetables into the dish) component. Many thanks highly recommend making this dish so much flavour.

  82. 5 stars
For those that have doubled the recipe….did it work good…any modifications? This is one of our families favorite recipes and I am having a big family dinner tonight and would like to make it. Suggestions welcome!!

  83. 5 stars
This is now my go-to Shepherds Pie recipe (after trying so many others). Adding garlic powder to the mash makes this extremely special.

  84. 5 stars
I love this recipe and have made it for decades. But, I cheat now. I just use a large container of Bob Evans mashed potatoes. So much easier, quicker and less clean-up. You can always mix in the parm with it. I just top mine with shredded cheddar cheese and maybe some bacon bits if I have some handy before baking.

  85. 5 stars
Just made this and everyone loved it! I used just corn and green beans for the added veggies since that’s what I had. Beautiful and delicious dish!

  86. 5 stars
This is the BEST! I added 1/4 cup of red cooking wine, 3 tbsp ketchup, and a few extra veggies.

  87. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious!! I doubled the spices, and did 1.5x the tomato paste and it was so good!! Will absolutely be making this again. I also had a butternut squash I wanted to use, so I roasted it and pureed it into the mashed potatoes. Highly recommend!

  88. 5 stars
Made this recipe tonite exactly as written but half the butter in the potatoes. Sprinkled parm over top before baking. Absolutely delicious! A definite keeper!

  89. 5 stars
I made the shepherd’s pie recipe today. I reduced the broth a little bit and added red wine. It was delicious. Thanks for a recipe that’s easy to follow.
I’d like to include my photo

Whenever I’m thawing out ground beef my husband always asks if it’s for shepherds pie! He loves it. Best I’ve ever found.

    1. 5 stars
This recipe is always a favorite in my household! Even my 2 year old who doesn’t really care for meat LOVES it and cleans his plate! Definitely recommend!

  91. 5 stars
This is by far the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I’ve tried! It’s delicious with a rich flavor. We’re cutting down on meat, so I use half of the beef and add more veggies. Sometimes we use fresh vegetables instead of frozen. The mashed potatoes on top are wonderful. We’ve served it to guests, and I’m sending the recipe to my daughter. Thank you!

    1. Thanks for the idea of adding more vegetables. I have only 1/2# meat. Can’t wait to make it for dinner!

  92. 5 stars
I’ve always wanted to make shepherd’s pie. It was pretty simple and very delicious. My husband said I could make this anytime I wanted !. he loved it. And so did my grandson and I. Highly recommend making this favorite dish☆☆☆☆☆

  93. 5 stars
I made this with ground turkey and chicken stock and it is INCREDIBLE. Wow. Will absolutely use this recipe to reference again- delicious!! <3

    1. 5 stars
Wow! I never thought of that!!
      Thank you!
We’ve used ground turkey as substitute for beef for burgers and it’s awesome, can’t wait to try turkey Shepard’s pie!!

    1. 5 stars
I will admit, I used your recipe as a base.
I wanted a bit more flavors, so I used ground beef and chorizo, added mushrooms and green peppers, and topped the potatoes with cheddar cheese. 😋

    1. 5 stars
Love it! It’s the only “real food” I know how to make. I added an egg to the mashed potatoes to help give it that golden crust (don’t forget to broil it for the last few minutes), and used a little less half & half + butter. Used yellow potatoes as well.

  94. 5 stars
I !over the recipe and all friends loved it…. I have to make it all the time now for my girls night in with a movie and drinks.

  95. 5 stars
Made a double batch for the family hoping for leftovers but not a chance. I did simmer a bay leaf in the stew and omitted the rosemary and it was still great. Won’t ever use another recipe.

  96. 5 stars
I use totel tomatoes and before the potatoes topping I put can of creme corn I’ve got this recipe down now after all these years..mine is awesome don’t mean to brag but Omygoodness!!!

  97. 5 stars
This is an awesome recipe. I’ve made it several times and it never fails to impress me and my wife. I triple this recipe so we have plenty of leftovers and, like many leftovers, it tastes even better the 2nd and 3rd day.

  98. 5 stars
Just made it and it is a rousing success! I used a deep cast iron pan for the meat. Once I had the potatoes ready, I simply put that on top and into the oven. One less dish to clean is always better!

  99. 5 stars
This was a dish that has a long history but I never got around to try to equal that of my mother who learned this in the UK during bombing of London (WWII) I finally decided to buy the ingredients and go for it. The result would have made my mother happy to spoon along in the casserole. Why bother with dishes?? Combination of photos and text made the production easy. Installs confidence. Added baked beans….yummy. Used local charollais beef >>>not a waste !! Thankx. will be visiting site again reel soon

I don’t leave reviews for recipes very often, but this was amazing!! Ground beef recipes aren’t usually my favorite, but my husband loves shepherd’s pie so I wanted to make it for him. We all really liked it and I’m excited to have leftovers for lunch. I followed the recipe exactly, except for adding some shredded Colby jack cheese to the top. Chef’s kiss! 👌🏼👌🏼

  101. 5 stars
This was my first time making Shepherds Pie myself and it was so delicious I had to go back for seconds. I did not use peas, but I chopped fresh carrots and used canned corn instead. Adding this recipe to the favorites list!!!

  102. 5 stars
This turned out great! You can totally sub the fresh mashed potatoes with packages garlic parmesan mashed potatoes and added a touch of half and half to make them creamier. I used 2 bags and that was the perfect amount. I also topped it with shredded cheddar cheese and laid down a little pie crust under the filling which added a crunchy buttery crust to the dish.

  103. 5 stars
This was absolutely delicious!!! I’m admittedly a mediocre cook, but this recipe came out beautifully. It’s the perfect hearty and comforting meal.

  104. 5 stars
This was delicious!! I used ground turkey and had to substitute tomato paste for tomato sauce. Other than that, I had all the other ingredients, Definitely making this again!

  105. 5 stars
This is great. It’s very flavorful and delicious. This will definitely be in regular rotation at my house.

  106. 5 stars
Made this dish tonight for supper. It is the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe EVER !!! Will definitely make this again. The family loved it ❤️.

  107. 5 stars
Not a traditional shepherds pie from my experience but it was delicious and the whole family destroyed it leaving none left for my lunch. Definitely in my toolbox now.

  108. 5 stars
This dish was delicious! I followed the recipe with one modification (doubled the garlic) and it was simply scrumptious! Can’t wait to make it again and take it to a potluck.

  109. 5 stars
This is the most amazing recipe everyone in my home loved this meal finally it’s hard to find something that all my 7 kids enjoy!!!!!!

    Thank you so much!!!!

  110. 5 stars
I have made many shepherd pie recipes over the years and everyone has always come back for more especially when I think I’m making a dish for two nights in a row and it winds up to be one night that tells me everyone loves it. I did this recipe and improvise a little bit added some shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the mashed potatoes. I didn’t have tomato paste so into the two cups of beef broth I added flour to thicken up the liquid for the meat mixture… Everyone loved it it’s absolutely delicious this is one recipe you can make over and over again oh and also I used four cups of mixed vegetables Frozen I can’t tell you enough how great this recipe is!

  111. 5 stars
Amazing recipe. First time to prepare the Shepherds pie and loved every minute. Received many compliments from friends… mmmm… Tasty recipe!!

  112. 5 stars
This is a great recipe! Hadn’t had this in years and this recipe didn’t disappoint. I used instant potatoes and frozen peas and corn since I don’t care for carrots. Invited some neighbors as guinea pigs and they were extremely happy to be used. LOL

  113. 5 stars
Delicious recipe! Easy to follow and the whole family enjoyed it. FYI- the listed nutrition facts are off. I calculated on my own, and calories are much closer to 600 per serving.

  114. 5 stars
Fantastic flavor explosion! Sharing this one my Instagram page @_k.c.s_kitchen and putting on my regular dinner rotation. Thank you!

  115. This Classic Sheppard’s Pie recipe is the absolute best , a family fave , thank you for this amazing recipe!!

  116. 5 stars
Really, really good! I used 1/2 ground turkey, and 1/2 ground beef. Had a bag of mixed veggies, so threw that in. The spice combo was savory, but not too overpowering for kids. Didn’t have time for the topper, so just made up the potatoes and ladled the meat mixture over them. Will definitely do the classic presentation another time!

  117. 5 stars
Alright. I’ve made this dish a million times. I’ve never commented on any online recipes in my life but I have a moral obligation to do so now. This is a classic. Nobody could say no to seconds besides a vegan.

I really like to add more tomato paste as well as frozen veggies. Also, yesterday I was without Worcestershire sauce so I threw some dry white wine in with the broth and it was incredible. Highly suggest.

    1. 5 stars
Hello there! I have made this receipe many times as well and we love it. I am having a bigger family dinner tonight and would love to make this but have never doubled it. Did you double all ingredients? Thank you!

  118. 5 stars
I absolutely wowed my family with this recipe. I added more Worcestershire sauce, and a tiny bit more broth so the beef is a little more juicy. Last time i made it i even surprised myself at the flavor. Great recipe!

  119. 5 stars
Excellent recipe! I followed the instructions exactly. I have never cared for this recipe growing up but my husband has been wanting it. I am now a fan of this meal that’s simple enough to put in my rotation. Thanks!

  120. 5 stars
The husband loves it! He likes more gravy, so doubled the broth the second time I made it I then added shredded cheese on top of the potatoes! That made it perfect for him!! He loves the spices! If I’d not told him he would have thought I used ground lamb!

    1. 5 stars
This in an all time favorite of my husband’s. I make this a few times a year. Always comes out perfect.

  121. 5 stars
This recipe is to die for… nobody used ketchup!!!!! The tangy rich meat mix was up to par and finally nobody wanted ketchup for it ☺ I found my new shepherd’s pie recipe ♥

    1. 5 stars
I can’t thank you enough for posting this recipe online. I made it both ways, first I made it with beef and then I made it the traditional way with lamb and I gotta say the traditional way was the best. I only use your recipe every-time I make it now. This is my all time favorite meal so thank you again. Much love

    1. 5 stars
Wow!!! This turned out amazing!!! My Husband and picky 5 year old loved it!!! I will definitely be making this again. I’m going to try making it with mashed sweet potatoes next time.

    2. 5 stars
Great recipe used all garden vegetables with lamb, and put dried cottage cheese in with the potatoes. Turned out good no leftovers. Did some frozen single servings too.

    1. 5 stars
Love this recipe. It’s simple to make, but has such great flavour thanks to the herbs and spices! The only change I make is to melt grated cheddar cheese over the top while it bakes rather than mixing Parmesan into the potatoes. I’ve made it 3 times and it will remain in regular dinner rotation.

  122. 5 stars
I have prepared your Shepherds Pie several
times. It’s the only recipe I use now. Delicious! 😋 Thank you!

  123. 5 stars
This is the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe ever! It is worth every second of making it. Everyone I have ever made it for loves it. No comparison! I did add about 1 cup of sour cream to the potato part. And I always double the recipe because 1 batch is never enough, lol! Thank you so much for posting this recipe!!!

  124. 5 stars
    Fantastic!
    Made it for Easter.
    My Granddaughter requested it.
    She loved it!
I used cheddar instead of parm because that’s more children friendly.
I will Definitely put this in my kid rotation.

  125. 5 stars
A wonderful recipe and everyone wanted seconds, This will be my new go-to recipe for company. It is savory and the lamb is a lovely background for all of the other ingredients. Love this!

    1. Amazing! Rave reviews in this household! Used only corn and added extra cheese (cheddar and parm between the layers and a healthy amount on top. Browned it under the broiler the last few minutes. Great spices in the meat layer. Yummy 🤤

  126. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious!! Whole family loved it. Used gluten free flour and a 13oz bag of gluten free plant based crumbles. We will eat this often—thanks!!!

  127. 5 stars
Great easy recipe. First time making Shepherd’s Pie. Would have tried sooner if I realize how quick and easy it was. Next time I’ll lower the amount of thyme. Used cooked carrots and canned corn; increased the amount of beef broth to compensate for no extra water from frozen veggies.

    1. 5 stars
I have tried a few shepherd’s pies in my time, this one is outstanding, sticking with this one, you will not regret it. Tasty spot on recipe. I used cheddar with the mash, suits the kids. Cheers

  128. 5 stars
This was so delicious. I used grated parmigiana cheese for the potato topping as that’s all I had and doubles the tomato sauce as I had no paste. It worked out perfectly. Can’t wait to make it again. A true Winner

  129. 5 stars
The best recipe ever as the title suggests. I can’t fault it in any way whatsoever, the flavour of the mince filling (which I use beef in making it a cottage pie) is absolutely fantastic and rich, and as for the mash… the mash topping is incredible, I now use it to make my regular mash because it is that delicious, creamy and flavourful. Credits to whoever wrote the recipe, clearly lots of thought has gone into it and a massive thank you from myself and my family who devoured it!

  130. 5 stars
I did the same. Placed the cast iron fry pan on top of a sheet pan. Grandkids are coming for lunch tomorrow…guess what we’re having? Next time I will half the recipe as there are only two of us….so guaranteed left overs too! We loved it and so did the kids!

  131. 5 stars
Excellent recipe. My Grandmother taught me to make ridges in the potato mash with a fork so you get browned edges but she would sprinkle the cheese over the meat mixture and make garlic mashed potatoes for the topping. I found cheese in the mashed potatoes also browns it. It is important to have a bit of crust. Just score the whole thing with a fork in a crosshatch pattern before baking.
You can toss in small dice turnips, rutabaga to stretch it. I also deglaze the pan with red wine before adding strongly flavored broth or beef gravy. Add salt at the end since the bullion/bisto and broth/gravy has varying amounts of salt. You can always add more salt bit you cant easily fix it if oversalted.

  132. 5 stars
This was absolutely delicious! My family and I have never had Shepherd’s Pie before, and this will definitely be a repeat in our household. I also love that the veggies don’t include green beans or lima beans like I’ve seen in some recipes.

  133. 5 stars
Great recipe. I love casserole dishes but my Son-in-law is not a fan, but he had two helpings!

Personally, I loved it. Easy to put together. Great recipe for a quickie meal. Served with some garlic bread. I was the “bell of the ball” tonight. Thank you for the recipe. Can’t wait to try more!!!!

  134. 5 stars
Excellent recipe. I added dried basil in lieu of parsley as well as a whole can of tomato paste. I used beef broth with red wine. I also boiled 3 garlic cloves with the potatoes and sprinkled paprika on top before baking.

  135. 5 stars
Hands down my favorite shepherds pie. My parents finished it the first night. Love it, thank you.

  136. Delicious! I mashed the potato together with some sweet potato, I like that combination but the sweet potato is very creamy so the cream/milk may not be necessary. I can’t have cow dairy so I added some goat gouda cheese on top of the potatoes. I have made shepherds pie many times over the years but this was my favourite of them all. It’s a keeper! Thank you!

  137. 5 stars
This was a big hit with my family…who practically liked the baking dish to get it all! I did make alterations due to what was on hand. Cheddar cheese instead of Parmesan and frozen mixed veg instead of peas and carrots. Thanks for sharing

  138. 5 stars
Instead of flour I used gravy mix. It turned out so good, it’s the best batch we’ve made of this recipe to date! Cooking on top of a baking sheet was a great idea. I used a cast iron pan and put it on top of a sheet while baking.

  139. 5 stars
I’ve made this twice this month! The family loves it! The only thing I did different was added a little slap ya mama because I like a little kick. It’s not much and my kids couldn’t tell.

  140. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious!! Super simple to make and my entire family (including my 2 year old) had 2+ helpings. Definitely a keeper, thank you so much for sharing!!

  141. 5 stars
Turned out magnificent! Especially your suggestion to place Casserole on top of pan if it looks full. The juices certainly did boil over! I was protected though! Thanks!

  142. FYI: I added Spanish Rice with ground beef, red and orange pepper , minced garlic and onions to mix the. Rest of those are combined to put in oven 40 minutes…

  143. 5 stars
I cooked last Friday . My husband and I love this and we had left over the next day. It actually are very delicious.. We will continue to make those frequently… Thank for the recipes..

  144. 4 stars
This is a good recipe for a traditional Cottage Pie. I made it and have since adapted for my taste profile – red pepper flakes and Chicago style giardiniera to add heat and a tangy element to the meat mixture.

  145. 5 stars
This recipe is AMAZING! The first two times I made it with ground lamb but this time I made it with ground lamb and ground wagyu beef (1 lb. each- I doubled the recipe). WOW. Just WOW. Absolutely delicious! This is hands down the BEST Shepherd’s Pie recipe I have ever used. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

  146. 5 stars
This is an excellent recipe! My family liked it better than any other shepherd’s pie or cottage pie we’ve made. Today I made it with half lamb and half beef (and I doubled it because leftovers are so good). I don’t change anything. Well ok, I added a small scattering of cheddar cheese on top, but it’s not necessary for this excellent dish!

  147. 5 stars
True to its name- it is the best I’ve tasted. It has more depth of flavour than other Sheperd’s Pie recipes. I added a bit of ground lamb to the meat layer and a sweet potato to the topping. I’ll be sharing this recipe with everyone I know who loves a ‘keeper’. Delicious- thank you!

  148. 5 stars
I made this according to the recipe, except I added some fresh portabella mushrooms chopped. It was WONDERFUL!! Thanks so much for the recipe.

  149. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious, used avocado oil, ground lamb and mixture of Lager beer and chicken broth in place of beef broth ☺️. Doubled to feed 8 adults and served in bread bowls 🤗. Even my 8 month old grandson loved it, only 1 cup of meat mixture was left 👍👍👍

  150. 5 stars
This dish is so wonderful! Your meat loaf really was beyond great but this pie is so spectacular! We can’t wait to try your next recipe.
    YUM!

  151. 5 stars
This was so good that my husband went back for seconds, and he hardly ever does that! It is a keeper for us!

  152. 5 stars
Best authentic shepherd’s pie made with lamb and all those fresh herbs and spices made this recipe fun to make and tasted delicious. I will keep this in my recipe collection.

  153. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! Didn’t change anything on the recipe. Delicious! Will for sure use this recipe anytime Shepard’s Pie is requested.

  154. 4 stars
I made this on St Patty’s Day using ground lamb. Next time I will use ground beef. The gameyness of the lamb was a little too much for me!

    1. Hi Donna, I’ve never cooked with lamb, but I’ve cooked a lot of wild rabbits, squirrels, and venison. I have found out during my years of cooking, that if you want to tame the gaminess of lamb, or other gamey meats, usually soaking it in milk will do the trick or cooking it along with another meat and mix them together worked for me. Especially with venison roast. Cook it and a beef roast together, shred, and voila! Shredded roast sandwiches or add some barbecue sauce and make sammies with it.
If you soak the lamb in milk, you can soak it for a few hours or overnight. When you take the lamb out of the milk, rinse it off and cook as usual.

    2. 5 stars
So SOOOOOO yummy!!! I didn’t have carrots on hand but chopped up a bell pepper and sautéed with the onion instead. I also topped the potatoes with a half cup of shredded cheddar and WOW 🤩 this recipe is a new Sunday go-to!

  155. 5 stars
Excellent dish. My husband wants me to double it next time so that we will have more leftovers. It is a long list of ingredients, but I had all of them in my pantry and freezer, and those ingredients give the dish such a depth of flavor. I will certainly make it again.

  156. 5 stars
Excellent however I improvised a bit. I added a can of rotel which I sautéed before and with onions and I put Parmesan on top of potatoes rather than mixing in. Otherwise perfect

  157. 5 stars
This is the Best recipe. All the spices are well balanced and all cooks up delicious. I made it with ground beef as my husband doesn’t care for lamb. It worked very well! It’s a keeper for sure! Mashed potato topping is just the right ratio to the meat filling using a 9× 9 inch square casserole dish. Very good!

  158. 5 stars
You have some of the best recipes I have ever made. This Shepherd’s pie is delicious and my family loves it. I made it last week and then made a double recipe to freeze today. I assembled it but did not bake it. Any suggestions on baking it after it is frozen?
    Thank you.
p.s. Your chicken pot pie is excellent and worth the effort of making your own crust!

  159. 5 stars
My family absolutely loved this version of shepherd’s (cottage) pie! We have tried other recipes for shepherd’s pie in the past and this recipe by far has been the best that we’ve found. I doubled the potatoes to make more mashed potatoes to put a thick coating on top, added some shredded cheddar cheese into the potatoes while mashing and sprinkled the parmesan cheese over the top before baking. It sounds like a lot of ingredients but it was so easy to put together and so very, very tasty! YUM! This recipe will be used again and again!

  160. 5 stars
This recipe had amazing depth of flavors and richness . I altered the flour with a bit of brown gravey mix. It was absolutely delicious.

  161. 5 stars
I made this recipe a few days ago and my husband, who grew up eating Shepards Pie said it was like he remembered eating as a kid. We both enjoyed it and I am looking forward to making it again. Thank you.

  162. 5 stars
Tried this for St. Patrick’s Day weekend 2023–made it today March 18th. It is great–really good. Haven’t had this since I was a young boy. I’ll be having plenty more. Not difficult to make and doesn’t make much of a mess to clean up. I bought Leg of Lamb at the grocery store and used my electric grinder to turn 1-1/3 lbs. into ground Lamb for the Shepherd’s Pie–the rest will be for Lamb Stew in the Slow Cooker.

    1. 5 stars
Amazing dish! My husband asked me to make this dish after having it at a dinner party. I made it exactly like the recipe. He loved it! Next time I will put potatoes at the bottom with cheddar cheese before adding meat mixture and then adding another layer of potatoes. I read it in one of the comments.
      Thank you!

  163. 5 stars
Easy and delicious meal. Can be one pan if you have something oven safe after the sautéing on the stove. Next time will cut the rosemary and thyme a little bit. Maybe restaurants have us used to something with less flavor. Also another change we will make, but using same recipe, put mashed potatoes on top after it has already been in the oven 20 minutes. We really like the separation of the two and the liquids of the meal boiled up through the potatoes. We cheated like most here and used refrigerated ones (bob Evans or hormel)

I made this recipe and it was fabulous. Used Elk hamburger instead and added a teaspoon of beef bouillon. I also like a bit of celery seed in my meat pies and doubled the potatoes because I like love potatoes. Plus, to make it gluten free I used Gefen pure Potato Starch instead of flour (1 tablespoon). I piped (withcake icing bag) the potatoes on. This recipe made two- 9 inch pies. I froze one on a tray a bit before covering it with foil. My son took that one back to college with him and baked it when he got home. He loved it. My husband loved it. Will definitely make this one of my go-to recipes.

I’ve been watching old British Crime shows lately and in one, “Pie in the Sky”, the chef recommends putting a layer of potatoes at the bottom AND over top. So I did just that and also sprinkled a little more parmesan and it was excellent! Will definitely make again.

Made on St. Patrick’s Day and it was a hit! Doubled the recipe without doubling the butter and it was perfect. I couldn’t find frozen carrots, so I just cut up fresh ones (next time I’ll soften them with the onion, but no one seemed to mind a little crunch. Thank you for sharing the recipe! Will definitely make again!

Excellent. My whole family loved it.. I made in 3 separate baking dishes, one batch with plant based hamburger for my vegetarian daughter and one dish with only corn for my other daughter that doesn’t eat peas and carrots. My wife and I got the batch exactly from the recipe. A bit more work but to have a meal that everyone in my family says, ” Please make this again!”, Is rare. Because I had 3 dishes to cover didn’t have enough real mashed potatoes so had to supplement with a package of instant. Still delicious! Thanks for a great recipe.

  168. 5 stars
Delicious! I will say, as others have pointed out, make sure you start the potato filling before the meat! But overall, it was a perfect St. Patrick’s Day dinner and my family asked me to make it again next week!

  169. 5 stars
I actually made this more of a vegan type dish for Lent using Beyond Beef. It was wonderful! We couldn’t get over how flavorful it was and if I didn’t say anything, no one would have known that I didn’t use ground beef.
    This one’s a keeper.

Made some freestyle changes to suit personal taste, however; hands down this si the best shepherds pie recipe I have ever found.

FYI – personal taste changes were fresh herbs, and 4 garlic cloves boiled and mashed with the potatoes and individual serving dishes prepared and baked.

  171. 5 stars
5 stars! This is in our regular meal rotation. I usually serve it with warm bread. Dried thyme isn’t my favorite so I usually cut that in half but that’s just a personal preference. Id also suggest peeling and putting the potatoes on the boil before starting the meat.

  172. 5 stars
Just made this for the first time and it will DEFINITELY be my go-to recipe for Shepherds Pie from here on out! I don’t eat ground beef or lamb, so I used ground Turkey, I used Yukon gold potatoes instead of russets, and I used a concentrated beef broth to amp up the flavor. It was phenomenal! Huz and teenager loved it, too.
    10/10 would recommend!

    1. 5 stars
Excellent! Don’t like frozen veg. Used canned-
VegAll and Summer Crisp Corn. Used Bob Evans original mashed potatoes. ( No energy to make homemade. ) We loved it!! Sauce is so flavorful and delicious! Thank you! Husband already asking to have again.

    1. 5 stars
Fantastic! I made a double batch and used Wagyu ground beef. I procrastinated and didn’t have time to go to the store to get the frozen veggies. I found a way to use my canned veggies without turning them to mush. I let the meat mixture cool and added the cold canned veggies right before assembling casserole. Worked out great. Didn’t have time to make the potatoes from scratch so I used 3 packets of the Idahoan Roasted Garlic variety of instant mashed potatoes according to direction. My parm cheese wasn’t any good so I substituted Pecorino Romano, just not as much due to its stronger and saltier flavor. It turned out great and the substitutions worked. As it happened, someone else used this recipe, minus the corn, and they both had a very similar taste. Delicious!

First time we ever had Shepherds pie. This recipe is spectacular. My husband said it is one of the best meals he has ever had. Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing your recipe.

  174. 5 stars
This is one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted. Perfectly balanced flavors, texture, etc. I do double the peas and carrots because that’s what’s in the package.

  175. 5 stars
This recipe is a keeper! Our family of 4 all loved it! The mix of spices made this so delicious and I love the simple ingredients. I now make double it and freeze half… it gives us two family dinner plus a couple of extra servings 🙂

  176. 5 stars
I really enjoyed it. Not exactly the flavoring i was expecting, i think it was the rosemary. I also opted out of the corn, just because i was going for more of the basic recipe. Im definitely open to adding corn next time! Thanks

    1. 5 stars
Excellent recipe. Only real adjustment I’ve made is to up the herbs by like 25%, and to add more salt and pepper to the beef.

When the pie is almost done baking, turn up the heat by 20-30 degrees and run a pad of butter over the top. Let it crisp up. Gives a beautiful brown fringe to the pie.

  177. 5 stars
I’m not a lazy cook, but on a workday weeknight I like to keep things uncomplicated. This recipe does the trick, minus cooking up the potatoes. So, I took a short cut and used ready-to-microwave mashed potatoes – which I spread on top of the beef mixture and got into the oven in no time. I also boosted the Worcestershire sauce a bit to give it the pub taste that I grew up with in Washington, DC. Delish!

  178. 5 stars
I use this recipe all the time. Love it! So do all my grown kids!! Great way to get them to come visit. Free mama food! Thank you so much. Such a simple hearty winter comfort food!

  179. 5 stars
Delicious!!! Even the picky children ate it, & one had a second helping. Definitely a ‘make again’ recipe.

  180. 5 stars
This was very good! I added a little bit of turnip (because I had it) and some carrots and celery with the onions but other than that, I followed te recipe. Thank you for sharing.

  181. 5 stars
    Awesome!!I Great recipe.
I have never liked Shepherds Pie- I only made it as an “I’m sorry” dinner for my husband. I was going to eat leftovers while he had the Shepherds pie….but the pie looked so good I had to try a bite. Wow, I did not realize what I had been missing. This recipe has become one of our favorites.

  182. 5 stars
I made it for my fiancé,he ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!
Now I make it at least once a month… I make it with green bean casserole…ABSOLUTELY A HIT WITH MY FAMILY!!!

  183. 5 stars
Absolutely the best Shepherd’s Pie I’ve had in a very long time. Probably since my mother made it for me years ago. The combination of spices and ingredients made it a very fine meal of comfort food. The only thing is, I used a 9 x 13 dish because I didn’t want it dripping over the edge. Works great. The only suggestion I have, and I’ve found this on other recipes as well, is perhaps put the boiling of potatoes at the front of the recipe. I know it’s obvious that you need potatoes but having it up front is a reminder to get them on the stove while the rest of the recipe is being complete. Thanks for an amazing recipe! SO GOOD!!

  184. 5 stars
So YUM! I made this for the first time about a month ago and the kids and I fell in love! We’ve made it again since and wouldn’t change a thing about the recipe.

  185. 5 stars
This looks great. I think I’ll give this one a try. The last time I had Shepard’s Pie was when I was a young boy and my mother made it once that I remember. Maybe more times, but I remember the one time. It was good. I like these kinds of meals. Happy St. Patrick’s Day is coming up.

  186. 5 stars
My secret is a can of rorel.tomatoes and can of cream corn before the potatoes and cheese on top of potatoes…sooo awesome…

    1. 5 stars
Amazing. I was still eating out of the dish while cleaning up the kitchen. Wife said best she’s had. Use lamb if you can get it.

      1. 5 stars
Delicious. I made it exactly as the recipe called for and I can’t wait to serve it again. Thank you for sharing this.

  187. 5 stars
Made this recipe today and my family loved it. I doubled the recipe and added additional veggies. This was my first time trying Shepard’s pie. It was delicious and pretty easy to make. I will definitely be putting this meal in the rotation.

  188. 5 stars
This is hands down the BEST shepherd’s pie recipe I’ve been able to find. We use venison. My husband loves it!

    1. 5 stars
This was tasty and my family enjoyed it so I definitely will make it again. Since my granddaughter cannot eat beef I did replace the beef broth with vegetable broth and I used ground turkey meat.

      1. 5 stars
That’s how I do this dish as well for health reasons. Once in a blue moon lamb for a treat.

    1. Sandie, I am also living without an oven. If you happen to have a turkey roaster, it acts as a decent oven replacement.
Looking forward to trying this recipe tonight!

  189. 5 stars
has anyone tried to adapt this for crockpot? I loved it as posted but I am currently without an oven (don’t get me started on why) and need to feed a bunch of kids for St. Paddy’s Day. Thanks!

  190. 5 stars
I have made this recipe a number of times now, just as written. It is excellent, savory with the seasonings very well balanced. So, so yummy!!

  191. I just put it in the oven to bake. The beef mixture is wonderful and the potatoes, yum! Can only imagine it is going to be awesome after baked together. Thank you for the recipe.

  192. 5 stars
Made this today. Very easy and so delicious! I used ground turkey so I increased the amount of spices a little. I also used fresh chopped carrots and cooked with the onions. I decreased amount of butter in the potatoes and they were still very creamy and good. Next time I’ll get some lamb, which will be a treat.

  193. 5 stars
A really rich tasting shepherds pie. I think the only change I would make is less butter in the potatoes, it’s just a little bit too much. I would probably substitute some sour cream instead. I made it with ground elk and it was super delicious.

  194. 5 stars
I have to say that this is a terrific recipe! I made it to the specs and it was perfect. The right amount of herbs and everything else was great! THANK YOU!

  195. 5 stars
Best recipe! I have made this several times and my husband loves it. However the last time I only had chicken broth so I used that instead of beef broth, and was concerned it would not be as great. And, to my surprise it was as delicious as it was with beef broth! So it’s yummy either way!

  196. I love this recipe, but I did some playing and changed it into a breakfast pie. I use sage sausage, mixed veggies with a white pepper gravy with cheesy hassbrowns instead of mashed potatoes.

  197. 5 stars
This really is the “best “ Shepherd’s pie! I added a splash of red wine in with the meat mixture , otherwise I followed precisely . The ultimate comfort food!

  198. 5 stars
Just made this recipe for tonight’s dinner. I love how it’s full of flavor, cost efficient, filling, and so tasty. Ive tried other versions of recipes and this is my favorite one. Thank you for sharing with us. Keep up the great work.

  199. 5 stars
I really like this recipe. I substituted turkey for beef or lamb and cauliflower for potatoes. Delicious and very easy to prepare quickly.

  200. 5 stars
This is the Best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I’ve come across. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the results are absolutely delicious. I’ve already made this a number of times and it never disappoints. I even made a vegan version of this for my friend, with cooked lentils as the protein, soy sauce instead of Worcestershire sauce, and subbed oat milk and nutritional yeast for the mash, it actually turned out to be very tasty, she loved it!! This is a great recipe that can be altered to your dietary needs.

  201. 5 stars
This was easy and very good. I made a double batch. I used ground round, ground turkey and spicy sausage to add more flovor. I also added more carots, corn and peas. The second time I made it I used store bought Simply Potatoes becasue I had them in the refrigerator and wanted to use them. everyone loved this

  202. 5 stars
This concoction was delicious. I added 1/2 lb of lean ground beef to the pound of ground lamb. The spice mixture in the recipe is balanced. I used red potatoes instead of russets, and shaved fresh parmesan from a chunk. Easy peasy to make and it does lend itself to early preparation. Some steamed broccoli with sesame seeds is the perfect companion, along with a Portuguese red.

  203. 5 stars
Made this for the 1st time tonight and it was delicious. I made 1/2 the recipe since it’s just me and left out the corn that I do not eat. This is definitely a keeper.

  204. I’m trying to prepare some meals in advance to freeze since I’m expecting my first baby in 7 weeks. Does this casserole freeze well?

  205. 5 stars
This is ALWAYS my go to recipe. I always use lamb and bake it in my cast-iron Dutch oven pot. It’s absolutely delicious!!

  206. 5 stars
This was AMAZING!!!! My husband told me he didn’t like shepards pie and asked if I would be mad if he made his own dinner with the meat I wasn’t going to use… I said sure. A little bit later he came out and said it smelled so delicious, he was going to try it. He got up 3… THREE times for more! He said “how did I ever doubt this?!” Lol. It was amazing. Thank you!

  207. I have always wanted to try this recipe. I’m so glad I came across it, it was a hit with my picky eaters! Thank you so much!

  208. 5 stars
This is an awesome dish. I made this for dinner, mind you my husband is a Chef and he absolutely raved about the dish. He went to work the next day and made it for his residence. This is a keeper!!!

  209. 5 stars
I made this recipe this evening for supper and everyone LOVED it!
I used ground sirloin, it was so delicious, and everyone came back for seconds!
THIS RECIPE IS MOST DEFINITELY A KEEPER! 🙂

  210. 5 stars
I have made this recipe many times with both the lamb (traditional Shepherd’s Pie) and with Beef (Cottage Pie). I have had rave reviews every time. I had an original recipe an original recipe that was lost when we had Superstorm Sandy and this is even better.

I am keeping this recipe and even had to reprint since it is very dogeared!!

  211. 4 stars
great flavors, but what kind of coverage do you get with 2lbs (2 lg russet potatoes) of spuds? Has ANYONE managed to do this with 2lbs of potatoes and put more than 1/4-1/2″ of potatoes over the meat filling? 🙂

It’s a 5/5 recipe, but be prepared to use more potatoes!

    1. That’s exactly what I was wondering!!! Two potato’s? I’m gonna try more like 5-6 and if it’s too much I’ll save it for another meal. But just 2 potato’s sure doesn’t seem enough!

  212. 5 stars
Second time making this and definitely the BEST shepherd’s/cottage pie ever! My husband and I love it! I always rice potatoes for mash. Only change I made.

  213. 5 stars
All the herbs, tomato paste, beef broth gave the meat sauce a nice flavor with no one herb or the garlic standing out. It is a nice blend. I used Resers Main Street Bistro mashed potatoes. They aren’t as good as following the mashed potato recipe listed here, but they saved this old, disabled woman quite a bit of time.. Also, my husband says cooking ground meat as thoroughly as most recipes direct turns the meat into little hard balls of protein with no flavor. Therefore, we always make any sauce and simmer it; cook the ground meat slightly in a separate pan then add the meat to the sauce. Letting the meat fully cook in the oven with the sauce enhances the meat flavor to blend with all the ingredients. I have several shepherds pie recipes, but this one is easier and still very tasty. I will make this one again.

  214. 5 stars
The Shepherds pie turn out so good! My family really liked it and they are really picky eaters. I used ground beef and I added more cheese in the potato topping and I sprinkled some cheese on top. So yummy 😋

  215. 5 stars
My husband said, “the best shepherds pie I’ve ever had”. I substituted the beef meat with ground turkey because we needed to use it up, BUT added in a couple big spoonfuls of our bacon grease from the morning for some extra flavor. I had never had shepherds pie before but this was SO good!!

  216. 5 stars
Delicious! I made a mistake and added 2 tbsp of parsley instead of 2 tsp and removed as much as I could and it still turned out delicious. I added a little more vege’s, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste bc I had 2 1/2lbs frozen ground beef and I couldn’t separate it until most cooked down. I’m glad I did because it offered more servings. I had to show some restraint and not eat the entire dish in one meal! It ended up being a bitter cold day so this dish was perfect! It’s also calls for ingredients most have in stock.

  217. 5 stars
    Absolutely awesome
I purchased a LARGE individual muffin pan
This recipe made a perfect 6 portions
    Easy to make too

  218. 5 stars
This is closer to my Irish mom’s recipe. She made it with ground beef because here in the states, it is more affordable than back home she said. But whenever lamb was on sale, she would stock the freezer and make her own grounded lamb for this dish and others, as well as tubing it for stews and her other recipes. Around certain holidays, there was a man who sold lamb roasts and chops around Easter she would buy from him.
I follow her recipe, except I use gravy that I make up 4 times a year and freeze in 1-cup containers. It’s from scratch from bones trimmings, etcetera. I also make stock too. Chicken gravy and stock I also do around the same time. When I saw this recipe my first thought was this would be mom approved!

  219. 5 stars
I made this dish using textured pea protein (2 cups rehydrated with 1.5 cups of water), used a little butter to help add back some fat to the recipe. It was fantastic, and I am not a great cook. I have never cooked with tpp before and this was a great introduction. I used an extra splash of Worcestershire. So glad I found this recipe!

  220. 5 stars
Awesome! Wanted a different recipe for hamburger meat and it didn’t fail me! So good and great flavor! I left out the tomato paste and worcestershire sauce because I didn’t have either. The beef broth and flour combination makes a wonderful gravy mixed with the other spices! So good and so easy!

  221. 5 stars
I have made this recipe many times and each time it is terrific! If you are in a time crunch (which I usually am) I have used already prepared mashed potatoes and that cuts the prep time down. Such a great, versatile recipe. Thank you!

  222. I have made this twice now, and let me tell you… this stuff is on another level. The seasoning on the filling will change your life. Outstanding work. Thank you!

  223. 5 stars
First time making shepherds pie in years. Think I found a winning recipe, so delicious! Not too hard to pull together if you have the time. Followed the recipe but added a touch more salt and pepper to taste.

  224. 5 stars
I made this almost exactly the way the recipe was written. This is not my normal way of cooking, but it looked right to me and I had never made Shepherd’s Pie. My only deviation was to use a frozen mix of corn, green beans, carrots and peas as that was what was available at the store and I put in 2 cups. The dish was delicious and had good. eye appeal. I do not see any need to modify it as the spicing was perfect to my tastes. I did make peaks on purpose on the mashed potato topping to get good browning. A great comfort food dish.

  225. 5 stars
Superb. It’s better than I had expected. The lamb and spices used are perfect compliments to one another. This will be a staple in our home for years to come. Thank you.

  226. 5 stars
    I made this today! Delicious‼️

One question…fo I baste the top with an egg wash? I’ve done this in the past but don’t see it here.

Best Recipe of Shepards Pie I’ve come acrossed! My family ate until they were complaining about how full they were, and then my son went in for another helping lol.

  228. 5 stars
I have made this 3 times in the past 2 months. Every time I have used leftover prime rib and it has been stupendous! Bookmarked!

  229. 5 stars
This is the best shepherd’s pie. Very tasty yet easy to make. This will definitely be one of my go-to recipes. My husband loves this dish.

  230. 5 stars
This is unbelievable ! I can imagine how good it will be as a leftover. I went to Ireland this summer, and had shepherds pie, and almost every pub. This one beats all of them.😋

  231. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! Very rarely do I find a recipe that I don’t have to adjust slightly to make it more flavorful. It turns out perfect just the way it is. It’s so good, it has become a new staple in our house. Highly recommend!

  232. 5 stars
I never leave reviews but I am for this recipe. I have many years experience cooking professionally and personally. This is hands down the very best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I have ever made and I have made a few.

  233. 5 stars
I almost never leave reviews but this is incredibly tasty so I had to share how much we liked it. Once my picky 4yr old got it in his mouth he immediately loved it and ate a full bowl, and told me he loved it. I’ve made Shepherds pie before but this was by far the best. No changes or mods needed – make exactly as is, its delicious. (I didn’t have half and half for the potatoes so I used milk and some plain yogurt)

The fact that it is so quick and easy is a huge bonus. I cooked the meat /sauce in a large cast iron pan and added the mashed potatoes on top and baked in the same pan. No need to transfer into a separate baking dish and one less thing to wash.

  234. 5 stars
Shepherd’s pie I’ve ever eaten! Perfect blend of seasoning. I used ground lamb and didn’t skimp on the Worcestershire sauce!
Very helpful that the recipe allows for doubling or tripling the recipe. I made extra filling to freeze for future.

  235. 5 stars
This was FABULOUS! It was probably the most flavorful Shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had. I didn’t want to stop eating it. I made one alteration. I added a truffle parmesan seasoning to the potatoes. All of it was so good!

  236. 5 stars
Love this, definitely my go to if all i have is hamburger in the fridge and my kids coming over to eat my food lol. I don’t stray from the recipe, works great every time! Maybe I’ll do instant potatoes but the cheese is key. Thanks for something easy and delicious! Leftovers are great but that hardly comes up 🤔

  237. 5 stars
This was yummy. I made two personal preference adjustments. I subbed the rosemary for some dry steak seasoning, because I don’t like the taste of it, and I subbed the Worcestershire sauce for Hickory BBQ sauce and a dash of A1 sauce to the beef mixture. It was tasty. My Mother In Law is impossible to please, and she liked it as well. That says a lot. I would make it again. Thanks

  238. 5 stars
This is fabulous but you need to use good mincemefrom butchers it farm shop like we did supermarket mince will not have the same outcome

  239. I always made Sheppard’s pie with a tomato beef base for over 30 years . This recipe was so go that I am NEVER making it any other way. Thank You!

  240. 5 stars
I don’t typically leave comments but this dish has been a staple in our household for over a year. I rarely find recipes that I go back to but this one is my all time favorite! I always go a bit more on the potatoes and a bit more garlic- but this dish makes an Irish family jump for joy! Thank you for this! 100/10 would recommend.

  241. 5 stars
Made this in parts this week due to a very busy schedule. Put it together for dinner tonight. Got a colonoscopy coming up next Wednesday, and trying hard to eat clean/healthy.

  242. 5 stars
I looked at one or two recipes before this one and stopped right here. It was delicious! We doubled the recipe and had to make extra mashed potatoes to go with it because the layer was too thin. Love the tomato paste and beef broth combo. More flavourful.
We made it on a snow day and everyone was waiting for it to be ready!

  243. 5 stars
Wow! Fantastic recipe—clear, on-hand ingredients, & easy-to-follow…best of all, DELICIOUS! I almost always doctor ingredients in recipes but this was the rare exception. I was skeptical about the tomato paste but the overall combined proportions and flavorings resulted in the absolute perfect outcome. My small mods include whisking the tomato paste & flour (I used corn starch) into the beef broth before pouring it into the ground beef mixture. I cheated on mashed potatoes (easy peasy in 5 minutes & yummy…2-4 oz I*****n loaded baked potatoes flavor made with 4 c boiling water). I also greased/cooking sprayed the pan before layering the pie. Awesome regular rotation family recipe. The veggies’ taste & texture are nicely camouflaged in this dish. Thank u!

  244. Can you mash the potatoes with a beater? Not sure if it makes a difference. I want to make this recipe today.
    Thanks

  245. 5 stars
This recipe is a family favorite. The flavors are great! I make it with Impossible Burger and it works really well. I usually cut back on the butter and use milk instead of half and half, and the potatoes are still really rich and flavorful. I laugh every time I read the note that tells me I can use 1/2 cup of frozen carrots and 1/2 cup of frozen peas instead of 1 cup of frozen peas and carrots! Really? Actually, I use fresh carrots, and put them in towards the end of the onion cooking time.
It works well to make the meat layer and the potato layer early in the day and put them in separate containers in the refrigerator. A little before cooking, take them out of the fridge to bring them to room temperature. Then, assemble and bake. It maybe adds 5 minutes to the cooking time.

  246. 5 stars
Super flavorful! I’m definitely keeping the recipe to make again! My son who hates peas and carrots had seconds!

  247. 5 stars
I made your classic Shepards Pie recipe and we both loved it. My Husband insisted I add a pound of reg sausage with the ground beef which made me have to double the recipe and there is only the two of us. We will be eating this for the next three days but I don’t think we will mind. A big winner in our book. Thanks for the recipe!

  248. 5 stars
This is literally the best shepherds pie I’ve EVER had. Amazing flavour! (I put more of everything) and it was EASY!

  249. 5 stars
This was delicious! Only a few changes to the recipe: 1. I don’t like peas so I used an Italian style mixed frozen veggies (lima beans, carrots, zukes, Italian green beans). 2. Used Fage yogurt w/milk since I didn’t have 1/2 & 1/2. 3. Made some extra mashed potatoes, so we could decorate the top like an iced cake. Will definitely make this again.

  250. 5 stars
The only thing I would change is the parmesan cheese (not very English or Irish) to white cheese and add a bit more than the recipe suggests. Other than that it is pretty good. As for authentic, well, its as I just said, it’s pretty good, but I’ve had it at an English pub and it was much better and a bit different. You must know that this was, in England originally a meal made from leftover meat, vegetables and potatoes so there are different variations which have become over time a more common or similar recipe intentionally made from scratch and not leftovers.

  251. 5 stars
I made it tonight and it was amazing no leftovers. I used ground Turkey and added cheese and cornbread so I layers it potatoes, meat, cheese and topped it off with cornbread.

  252. 5 stars
This is such an awesome recipe!! My husband likes this better than the shepherd’s pie at McGuires restaurant!! I put mine in a 9×11 dish to be able to add extra mashed potatoes to it. I also add shredded cheddar which adds a nice touch.

  253. 5 stars
Rave reviews from my whole family. I had to make a substitution due to a family member’s allergy (subbed baby limas for the peas). The parmesan I had was a bit mild for our taste, so I added a tablespoon of nutritional yeast to up the cheesiness.

  254. 5 stars
Just yum!!! Happened upon the recipe by chance n so glad that I did. We ate every bit of it! Even the picky eaters enjoyed🤤

  255. 5 stars
OMG! I found this recipe before Christmas and I’ve been craving it ever since. Well, I finally made it! It’s amazing! I added a little bit of red wine to enhance the richness. I will definitely hold on to this recipe! It’s a winner.

  256. 5 stars
This was so delicious on a winter evening. I used lamb and fresh thyme I had in the fridge, along with a pinch of red pepper flakes. I found that canned corn worked well, too. Definitely one of the best shepherd’s pies I’ve ever made. Thank you!

  257. 5 stars
This is very good, my husband and myself really enjoyed it and wouldn’t change a thing. This will be in the rotation and I am sharing it with my daughter and sister.

  258. 5 stars
Delicious! I added grated zucchini in lieu of corn and used whole milk and cheddar in the potatoes. Gotta use what’s in the fridge 🙂 This was so easy definitely a keeper!!

All 4 of my kids and husband literally said the words “this is the best shepherd’s pie!”. It really was super good. I followed the recipe exactly BUT I think using fresh herbs (imo) makes everything better so I might try that next time.
    Thanks for a keeper:)

  260. This recipe was nothing short of mouth watering . I doubled the recipe and made it for 2 families. Such a crowd pleaser. I followed this recipe to a “T” changed nothing and was super with the results.

I’ve made this today and I have to say, AWESOME! My husband is going to go nuts, he loves Shepherds Pie! This is the best one I’ve ever made. Thank you for the recipe.

  262. I cooked this shepherds pie for my dinner. It was good. I will cut portion and throw in the freezer. That’s what I’m doing as I am always busy. No time to cook. Thank you for the recipe.

We love this recipe! I make it twice a month and it is always a huge hit.
I only use beef, lamb isn’t popular in my home, and fresh carrots, just because we keep them on hand…. but we are lovers of this recipe.
It is warm, hearty and great for leftovers.

This recipe has been a staple in my house for three years now, always winning the favor of all friends and guests!! Every bite is SO DELICIOUS. Five stars hands down

  265. This was so delicious! I made the meat mixture with celery, corn, and peas because that’s what I had. Then I made my own mashed potatoes “recipe”- just cream, ground white pepper added until creamy. The beef broth and tomato paste ratio within the mixture was perfection! I like to try a new recipe every time and this was really good! Nice texture and delicious flavor!! Thank you!!
