The Best Classic Shepherd’s Pie – AKA Shepards Pie or Cottage Pie. Ground Beef (or lamb) with vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with cheesy mashed potatoes, and baked.

Shepherd’s Pie

So, this is how you spell it:  Shepherd’s Pie.  But, from doing a quick google search, it came to my attention that TONS of people think it’s Shepards Pie.

Irish Shepherd’s Pie

Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie would actually call for ground lamb.  The difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie is the meat.  Cottage Pie uses ground beef, while Shepherd’s Pie uses ground lamb.

I called this recipe Shepherd’s Pie.  But, I wrote the recipe so that you could use ground beef or ground lamb.

I typically use ground beef because it is widely available.  But, for a special occasion, like St. Patricks day, I would use ground lamb.

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

(Note – The full printable recipe is at the bottom of this post)

  • Sauté some chopped onions in olive oil.
  • Add ground beef or ground lamb.

  • Stir and cook the meat mixture until the meat is browned.
  • Add minced garlic and Worcestershire sauce.

  • Cook the garlic for a minute.
  • Add flour and tomato paste.

  • Add beef broth, frozen mixed peas and carrots, and frozen corn kernels.
  • Simmer the meat gravy until it is thick.

  • Boil some peeled and chopped potatoes until they are soft.
  • Drain the potatoes

  • Mash the potatoes until smooth.

  • Pour the meat mixture into a casserole dish.
  • Top it with the cheesy mashed potatoes.

  • Bake until the meat is bubbling and the potatoes are golden.

Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Making the best Shepherd’s Pie is not difficult.  But, there are a few steps to it.  You have to make the meat mixture, the mashed potatoes, assemble the casserole, and bake it.

I find that the easiest way to make this dish is to work ahead.  You could make the beef or lamb mixture ahead of time.  Or, you could make the mashed potatoes ahead of time.

You could also make the whole recipe ahead of time.  Just assemble the casserole, cover the dish, and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it.  I find it is best to bake it within 3 days of preparing it.

When you are ready to bake it, take it out of the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before you need to bake it to let it start coming to room temperature.  Uncover it, and bake.

Best Classic Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

The Best Classic Shepherd's Pie - AKA Shepards Pie or Cottage Pie. Ground Beef (or lamb) with vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with cheesy mashed potatoes and baked.

Meat Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 lb. 90% lean ground beef -or ground lamb
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves -minced
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup frozen mixed peas & carrots*
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels

Potato Topping:

  • 1 ½ - 2 lb. russet potatoes -about 2 large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter -1 stick
  • 1/3 cup half & half
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese


Make the Meat Filling.

  • Add the oil to a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the onions. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef (or ground lamb) to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Add the parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and and pepper. Stir well. Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the flour and tomato paste. Stir until well incorporated and no clumps of tomato paste remain.
  • Add the broth, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen corn. Bring the liquid to a boil then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Set the meat mixture aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Make the potato topping.

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot. Cover the potatoes with water. Bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return the potatoes to the hot pot. Let the potatoes rest in the hot pot for 1 minute to evaporate any remaining liquid.
  • Add butter, half & half, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes and stir until all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Add the parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Stir until well combined.

Assemble the casserole.

  • Pour the meat mixture into a 9x9 (or 7x11) inch baking dish. Spread it out into an even layer. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat. Carefully spread into an even layer.
  • If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet so that the filling doesn’t bubble over into your oven. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.** Cool for 15 minutes before serving.


*If you can’t find frozen mixed peas and carrots, you could use ½ cup frozen peas and ½ cup frozen sliced carrots.
**Bake at 400° F.  Start preheating the oven after you make the meat mixture (listed in step 6).

    This dish was good but not great. It lacked flavor so more spices & hamburger are needed. The potatoes were very high in calories because of the half and half, butter and parmesan cheese. I always say, if I’m going to eat something with high calories, it better be great. This was good but I would not say great. The next time I will add more spices and hamburger & make the potatoes with a healthier substitute for the butter.

    Absolutely Delicious. Made it with frozen peas and carrots – added a can of drained corn. Then topped this with Cheese, bacon bits and chive before baking. Huge hit! The Worcestershire and sautéing the onions/garlic/meat was perfect. Highly Recommend

    Love this recipe. I have made it twice now and it is probably the best shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had. I like to use ground lamb and add extra carrot and peas. I also have been using chicken broth instead of beef broth.

    I have made shepherd’s pie many times. This recipe, ever so slightly tweaked, was by far the best we’ve had. I made a double batch for 4 of us and one of the my sons and my husband demolished it in 2 meals! They both begged me to make this a weekly staple. It was seriously delicious!

    I followed the recipe, except I put half of the mashed potatoes on the bottom of the Casserole dish, then meat mixture, mashed potatoes and topped with cheese. It was so good. I will make this again.

    Fantastic recipe! I was looking for authentic Shepherds Pie, and this is it! I substituted a fresh carrot (diced very small) as I had none frozen, and used ground lamb as well as lamb bone broth (we make all our own broths). Excellent flavor, just like my Irish neighbor in Oxfordshire, England used to make for me when she was helping out my mom. Thanks for this!

    Really delicious meal! One thing I had to change about my pie was the amount of mashed potato topping. I used four potatoes instead of two, and I actually ended up needing two more. Will be making this again!

      Soo delicious! My husband and I give this a 5 star rating, even though I used packaged potato mix, and a healthy vegan margarine instead of butter and cheese. But the filling was so flavorful! (I also chopped a fresh carrot to replace the frozen, and it worked out fine.

      I absolutely loved everything about it except for the Thyme. I used 1/2 of what it called for and only one person in my family would eat it.

      I made this recipe and had to triple the ingredients cuz I had alot more mince meat to use! It turned out awesome!

    My husband and I make Shepherd’s Pie together. He gets on browning the ground and I get on chopping onions and measuring everything else. This is our Go-To base Shepherd’s Pie recipe. We’ve made it at least ten times and it’s delicious, savory, comfort food every time. We use this seasoning blend and do little tweaks and variations to suit us. Tonight’s variation will be skin-on sweet potato mash instead of white potatoes, but we’ve also made it with ground turkey, Beyond Ground, bell peppers, spinach, mushrooms etc.. We love this recipe because It’s inexpensive, nutritious and one helluva way to elevate frozen peas & carrots. We can even fit this recipe into our Whole30 Nutrition Plan by simply eliminating the wheat flour. What’s not to love?

    I’ve been making Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage Pie for awhile and always have been told that I make them great, but this recipe is just perfect. I play around with some of the proportions (a bit more Worcestershire and beef broth, maybe a bit more garlic for the mashed potatoes), but I don’t stray far from anything you’ve laid out here.     This!!! It’s my go to recipe. I use to make shepherds pie but nothing like this. This recipe is comfort food and we all LOVE it!     I’ve made SP throughout the years. I decided tonight I wanted to try a different variation than my usual. I came across the recipe and decided to give it a try. We loved it!     Just outstanding. I use the entire 16 ounce package of frozen peas and carrots and double the corn. It uses all everyday ingredients. Leftovers are great, too. It takes longer than 20 minutes to prepare.

    Wow, this is the best Shepherd’s pie recipe I have ever tried. I grew up with my English mom’s recipe, but this is better. I didn’t have Worcestershire sauce on hand, so I used soy sauce. The flour and tomato paste really helped make the meat part rich and a nice texture. Divine.

    This is the best recipe for shepherd’s pie. I had fresh herbs available so I substituted that. I also mixed the tomato paste and flour with a little of the broth to make a smooth paste before I mixed it into the meat mixture. t was YUMMY!!

    I make this all the time and just wanted to add for anybody wanting to make this a little leaner- it is delicious with ground chicken or turkey (sub beef broth for chicken as well). I also too it with cheddar cheese before baking of course!

    Wow had some leftover 60th Birthday dinner, prime rib, shrooms and mashed potatoes. This was freaking fabulous

  45. Made mine with ground elk that I got last season. Also added some wild sage and used fresh rosemary, basil and oregano. It was fast and simple and made enough for a few days of food. I skipped the potato prep and bought easy make parmigiana instant mashed potatoes, put in plastic bag and cut the tip to layer it nicely on top. 10/10

  46. This recipe was delicious. I doubled the recipe, omitted the flour and tomato paste and added a little more Worcestershire sauce. Also, I used fresh carrots and canned peas — no corn. Had it for Easter dinner along with fresh green beans, a tiny ham and pigs in the blanket.

    I used lamb and ground beef, with avocado oil and vegetable broth. Absolutely delicious, first time ever making this dish. My family loved it even the picky little ones.

  51. My Dad called this dish “delightful” at least 3 times. It was so good, we couldn’t stop eating. We finished a 8×8 tray between the two of us. Luckily, I took a portion of everything and put it into a bread pan to freeze for another day.

  53. I have been wanting good shepherd’s pie for a couple of months now and was excited to find this recipe. My mom made shepherd’s (cottage) pie when I was growing up but never really wrote down what she did. This recipe was great and my brother and I really liked it. Very similar to what we had growing up. I changed a handful of things due to preference or what I had in the kitchen. I realized last minute I was out of rosemary so I subbed for italian seasoning and sage. I used a sweet onion instead of yellow onion and subbed the half and half with heavy cream. I didn’t weigh my potatoes but I do know I had more than 2 lbs. I only peeled one potato and kept the skins on the other two. Also accidentally overfilled the garlic as I was measuring over the bowl, so there was extra garlic powder. You know when you tap-tap-tap to fill the measuring spoon then it all comes crashing out? It all worked out though since I did use more than enough potatoes. Lastly, baked in a 7×11 metal pan. One thing that I like about this dish is that it is a little bit foolproof and allows you to use up what’s in your kitchen. I remember sometimes my mom would use instant potatoes, sometimes covered in cheddar cheese, sometimes different veggies, varying typs of gravy and seasoning.

    I was confused with the recipe only stating 2 large potatoes. Seemed like more in the video. I stuck to recipe, cut back butter because thought 1 stick was a lot for only 2 potatoes. In hindsight, wish I had used more potatoes in order to have a thicker layer on top. First time making SP! Will make again!

    This is simply the best shepherd’s pie! We’re a plant-based family, so I use plant-based mince instead of beef, and replace the butter and cream with plant-based alternatives, but otherwise I stick to the recipe. I have made this so many times for guests, who are usually meat-eaters, and they all always go for seconds, saying how delicious it is. I have never come across a plant-based shepherd’s pie that is a winner, but with some personal preference adaptations, your recipe definitely is! I keep it close to hand, because I come back to it so regularly.

    Excellent recipe. The herb mix and Worcestershire really complement the taste of the filling. I always seem to have left over rice from take out so I used 3/4 lb meat and added cooked rice to the filling with the liquid for a thickener instead of the flour. Also substitute milk and Greek yogurt for the cream in the potato topping. Thanks for sharing!

    I’ve tried several version, and I thought this one was delicious! I felt it was an easier recipe, that really didn’t take as much time as I thought. I had to sub fresh carrots, that I slightly steamed, with a half of a can of peas.

  61. I needed a quick dinner. I followed this recipe except I used instant brown gravy instead of the tomato paste. I used fresh carrots only 3 small ones.
    1/2 of a green pepper, 1 small onion and a can of creamed corn
    Only garlic powder, no other spices.
    I used instant mashed potatoes. I put cheddar cheese on Top of meat mixture and again on top of the mashed potatoes. Yum

  62. Absolutely delicious! This recipe has quickly become a staple in my home. I really enjoyed making it as well and it’s a pretty simple recipe if you’re used to cooking, even for beginners. Definitely double the recipe if you’re feeding more than 2 people. My boyfriend has a big appetite and I don’t think it would have been enough for the two of us if I didn’t double up.

  63. This is an easy recipe for Shepherds Pie. We loved it. I did substitute catsup for the tomato paste because I didn’t have any. It is flavorful and I will definitely make it again.

    1. Yes! I make this in a huge batch and I portion it out in single servings for my adult children because they love it so much. I don’t cook it in the oven, I leave that to the person eating it to do.

    2. Yep. For me, thawing for at least an hour before reheating works best. I reheat in the oven @400. I’ve never tried microwaving, but I bet it would be okay for small portions

    Yummy. I used fresh carrots and they need a bit more cooking. So I added them before the frozen corn and peas. Also, I omitted the parmesan cheese from potatoes. It would have been good with cheddar too, I just got busy and forgot. Haha. Directions make it easy to follow

    Growing up I HATED Shepherds pie. Now I think that was just because of how my mom made it. I used this recipe tonight and fell in love! I didn’t have any Worcestershire sauce but it didn’t REALLY need it to be good. I also used canned corn and peas instead of frozen and it was no issue. Super easy recipe with a delicious outcome. Will definitely be making this again in the future!

    This is an excellent Shepherd’s Pie recipe. Because my husband and I don’t like strong spice flavors, we halved the rosemary and thyme. I didn’t have frozen carrots, so I used fresh and precooked them a bit. In addition, I made the recipe a day ahead and refrigerated it until ready to bake, and it was delicious. This is a keeper and a great make-ahead dish for family or friends.

    I love this recipe. My way of helping those with sensitive gums, I put the dry herbs in a grinder and make them in powder, that way the dry herbs like rosemary or thyme does not get in between your teeth.
    My family loves this dish. I also drained all the liquid fat from the cook ground lamb.

    My mother an I made this with substitutes. Instead of lamb or beef, we used chicken. We boiled it and removed the bones. We didn’t use frozen vegetables; we used canned vegetables. We drained the cans and rinsed them with chicken broth. We used corn and sweet peas. We also cut some scallions and celery and added them to the peas and corn. Topped with mashed/creamed potatoes. Baked at 350 for 30 minutes. Be sure to put the dish on a cookie sheet in case it boils over. It was delicious and we will make this again and again.

    I made this tonight…but doubled the Recipe. It was Amazing! My kids like a little bit of kick or spice to each meal. So I sprinkled Cayenne pepper over the first potato mixture and I had to add 3 more potatoes and butter , cheese etc on top because I needed more to cover the meat and veggies. The gravy was amazing!     This was delicious. Didn’t have any tomato paste so used drained garlic and olive oil tomato bits and put them in the food processor and used the liquid with beef bouillon for the broth. A variation my mom would make when I was little was to use a taco seasoning packet with the meat portion and top with a jiffy cornbread mix or two and add cheddar cheese in top of that the last ten minutes of baking. Yum.

    Recipe was great. If you want to use fresher veggies like asparagus, orange pepper, carrots, brussel sprouts, etc.. dice them into quarter inch pieces and add them after onions sauteed a minute, but before the meat.
    Then continue following recipe.

    This recipe has become a staple in my household! I am currently dairy free, so I substitute oat milk for the half and half, and use dairy free butter and Parmesan. Even my toddler and husband who are not dairy free LOVE IT! I usually use lamb, but the grocery store was out of it so I subbed buffalo and that was another great alternative.

    I did see a review about the potatoes taking a long time- I do always start the recipe with the potatoes, and cook everything else while the potatoes are coming to a boil/boiling. Then everything is ready to go into the oven at about the same time!

    I’ve been craving a really delicious Shepherd’s Pie, but have never eaten what I considered a really good one in a restaurant. Time to make my own! I tweaked this one a little, as one does: I used fresh carrots cut into nice little cubes and added them to the onions after a few minutes. I cooked the tomato paste in there by itself for a minute to make it less raw tasting. I only added 1 Tblsp. of flour…2 would have made it too thick for my taste. And, very importantly, I added a squeeze of Sriracha (less than 1 Tblsp.). This mashed potato recipe looks good, but I used a stand-by that I knew I would love….it involves butter, cream cheese, sour cream, and green onions. Dotted with butter.
    So so so good. Just me here, so I consumed it over the course of 4 days. Reheats in the microwave very well, especially in a little glazed pottery dish that holds its heat for a nice long time.
    The ONLY thing I might change is to make it in an 8×8 pan so that the meat layer is thicker. I would not, then, use all the potatoes. I’d like the proportions to be more 2/3 meat, 1/3 potatoes, much as I love the latter.

    Wonderful! Followed recipe but did add 1/2 cup of mushrooms, 1/2 cup of red wine, a few more shakes of Worcestershire sauce, and a touch more salt to the meat mixture. After topping with the potatoes (used mixture of milk and sour cream instead of half and half) also spread some melted butter on top of the potatoes before placing the dish in the oven. It browned nicely on top and was yummy. Thanks for the recipe.

    I made this last night using 1/3 lb lamb and a lb of ground beef. It was delicious!     Easy recipe to follow. I love that it gives approximate times that each step should take for cooking. freezes well and tastes great! I have had demands to make it within a few days of the first time I made it! I have even added it to my meal prep sundays and split into smaller portions for when not everyone is home for a quick and easy meal that I can just toss in my toaster oven.

    There are alot of components but for the most part, I had all ingredients on hand so don’t really need to take time to plan ahead.

    I think the only part that I ‘tweaked’ was the potatoes as my family loves the potatoes and had to double that part of the recipe the 2nd time.

  155. Can I substitute olive oil for butter? And what non dairy product could replace the half and half! We keep a kosher home so cannot mix meat with dairy.

    1. I used non dairy butter and then saved some of the starchy water from boiling the potatoes – which was a pretty good non-dairy substitute for the half and half when making mashed potatoes.

    2. We are kosher also and I am going to try this with Impossible Beef so I can use the dairy ingredient. Otherwise, I have found oat milk to be a great pareve substitute. Instead of butter, I would use something like Smart Balance margarine.

    3. My SIL keep a kosher home and uses veggie crumble or she will use ground meat and oat milk or another dairy alternative for the half and half. She says the myokos dairy alternative butter is the best! Hope that helps. We don’t mix red meat and dairy, so I just always use ground turkey and follow the recipe.

    4. I just use some of the water the potatoes were boiled in until the potatoes are the consist I like. If you boil your potatoes in less water with salt it makes for a nice, flavorful and starchy substitute. I don’t ever use milk or 1/2 and 1/2 in my mash anymore.

      My daughter is allergic to dairy so we made a dairy free version of this and it was delicious! For the half and half I got a can of coconut cream unsweetened and mixed it with one can of rice milk. You can use your favorite non dairy milk just be sure it is unsweetened. The recipe only calls for 1/3 cup so I just put the rest in the fridge to use for something else. No one could even taste a hint of coconut. It was perfect.

    6. I also am making a Kosher version. i am going to make this tomorrow and plan to use “plant butter” i think it’s by Country Crock and non dairy and for the milk sub i always use Oatmilk in my mashed potatoes for a meat meal
      ( look for ine that says ” extra creamy!)

    I have been making Shepherd’s pies for a long time and I have tried several recipes that was consist of celery soup mushroom soup with along with cheddar cheese which is not good for us but this was very very good I follow the steps not in the same order you know but I did and it’s really really good

    Wow! The most delicious Shepherd’s Pie I have ever made, thank you!

    I didn’t have beef broth so I added some chopped up crimini mushrooms to the onion mixture. There’s plenty of water in the mushrooms so I didn’t need the broth, and it added a nice meaty flavor!

    I also used half potatoes and half cauliflower for the topping. I just like the flavor and lighter texture.

    This will definitely be a regular dish for me and my family from now on 🙂

    I grew up eating the most americanized version of shepherds pie which was basically mixing canned vegetable soup with ground beef, then topping with mashed potatoes. I loved it as a kid, but wanted to try something from scratch. I will never go back to the canned soup version, because this is amazing and my husband LOVES it.   171. This is a family favorite, I laugh because I don’t always make it the same wat twice:) I am not a lamb lover, so use ground beef. The recipe is a basic, sometimes I’ll saute mushrooms and roasted red peppers in with the onion and garlic. I use some thyme and other spices. I usually make it with peas and carrots and corn, if I don’t have any beef broth on hand, I usually have the cream of mushroom can I add-in. I will also smooth mashed potatoes along side the sides of the casserole dish, before adding the meat mixture, Then layer it with shredded cheddar, then top it off with the rest of the mashed potatoes, add some slithers of butter to top, sprinkle more cheese on top, and paprika. Sometimes use whatever cheese I have on hand, and also left over vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, even green beans. It’s always a winner, with a side of salad, and some crisp italian or french bread. It tastes even better the next day.

    I have made this three times. Once as Cottage pie and twice as Shepard’s pie. Both excellent with rave reviews. I always have fresh carrots on hand so I dice them and sauté with the onions. Frozen peas and corn are always on hand. I have used the Idahoan brand instant potatoes in lieu of fresh once in a pinch and it came out yummy as well. What a great way to get a nice variety of vegetables in my “meat mouth” husband too!

    Very delicious recipe. First time for this one and my husband stated that it’s a keeper. I did add a bit of Chicken in the Mug which added a bit more flavour as this just a personal preference.     Excellent shepherd’s pie recipe. I enjoy testing out comfort food recipes, and this one impressed me. The flavors were savory and rich with every bite. The layering of ingredients while cooking and simmering the ground beef is what makes it stand out. I substituted veggie broth for beef broth and added a bit extra since the beef I used was 95% lean. Also, since I’m lactose intolerant, I used vegan products in place of dairy, and it was fine. If you want a little kick, add cayenne. But, this recipe really doesn’t need it.

    I made this tonight. I used half the butter called for, chicken broth instead of beef, and sage instead of rosemary (all on account of just not having it). And I’m sitting on my couch writing this as the bowl is in my lap, and I’m just so in love with this recipe. I also broiled some cheddar on top of the potatoes. The worchestshire sauce really does it for the meat, don’t leave it out if you can help it!!!

    I was a never a big fan of shepherd’s pie because every version I’ve had (usually at church potlucks) has been bland. But we had some leftover mashed potatoes and I thought this would be a fun dish for my 13-year old to make.

    She shopped for all the ingredients, forgetting the broth and getting frozen peas instead of peas and carrots. So we used fresh carrots and we always have some better than bouillon in the fridge.

    This was s-o-o-o delicious. I thought there would be plenty for leftovers but the lucky pooch got to lick an empty casserole pan.

Accidentally left out the rosemary too. Cooked and baked it in a large cast iron skillet. I highly recommend doing that. So delicious

    Great winter recipe. Add about 30 to 45 min for the prep and precooked time… but we’ll worth the wait. Maybe it was just me but I’m usually a pretty good multitasker. Couldn’t find just frozen peas and carrots so I used a bag of frozen peas, carrots, corn and green beans. Thinking of adding a lil lima bean next time and maybe some sour cream in the potatoes.

    Very good recipe. I use fresh herbs like the rosemary and thyme. Very good. I also put rosemary and oregano in the mashed potatoes. So delicious. You can use the packet of dry potatoes and it’s quicker. They say “just add water” but I use milk and butter and lots of herbs and seasoning. Taste so good and quick. I also use canned veggies not frozen. A lot quicker and better. Total time with cooking was about 1hr. It also made 2 casserole 9×13 dishes. I also used 2lbs ground beef.

    So creamy, savory, moist and wonderful! For some reason it takes me 3 hours but most cooking takes me way longer than normal people take. The only thing I do differently is sear the beef first to get a brown crust (I put little chunks in the hot pan) and then I deglaze the pan with some red wine.     This is phenomenal! The spice mixture is perfect and creates something really delicious. I made just one modification to made it vegetarian (and added a couple splashes of my favorite Cabernet (Seven Moons)). I used one pound of beyond ground meat and 1 lb of sliced white mushrooms. I used 1.5x the spices, tomato paste, flour, and Worcestershire sauce (yes I know this has anchovies). The mushrooms cooked down considerably, so didn’t create so much mass the mashed potato couldn’t cover them.

It takes a bit of work to finish it but I actually did a double batch so I have a ton of reward for my effort! I omitted the flour and just added less broth to compensate and it turned out fine.     An outstanding Shepherd’s pie! I used frozen peas, frozen corn and fresh carrots (cut into 1/4 inch chunks). The fresh carrots have have excellent texture to bite into – not too hard, not to soft. Fresh grated parmesan takes this to the next level as well.

    I have frozen this recipe as well and it is fabulous! If you are contemplating what type of gift to give to a person that has everything, consider making a batch, and freezing it into single serving foil packs. I made 6 of these packages for my contractor brother who called me each and every night that he cooked a package to thank and complement me again.

      Amazing recipe! Incredibly easy to make. I’m able to make this dish from start to finish in 55 minutes. The best part about this dish is almost all ingredients are already in the pantry. If you don’t have one substitute for another. If you have everything ready and can cook sauce while potatoes are boiling your able to have both done at roughly the same time. I would suggest to chop and measure ingredients the day before as well as to prepare the potatoes ahead of time. The following day would be used to cook the meat mixture, assemble the ingredients according to the recipe and bake. I double the recipe as it freezes well too. This recipe is delicious!

    Delish! I doubled (more like tripled) the Worcestershire sauce and used a herbs de provence blend instead of the spice(herbs de provence has thyme, lavender,fennel and basil). I also added a dash of fancy celery salt. Turned out amazing. Had to use a little extra flour because of the floor of Worcestershire sauce.

    This is a keeper fore sure. I used golden potatoes instead of russet and added shredded colby jack cheese to the top before baking. This recipe allows you to tweak and add things you want. Yummy!

  222. I made this vegan by using plant based “beef”, vegetable stock, omitting the Worcestershire sauce and because I didn’t have corn, I used lentils instead.

    For the topping I used vegan butter and almond milk. I also omitted the parmesan cheese.

    I am so glad I tried this. I never write recipe reviews but I had to. It tasted AMAZING and was a hit with everyone in the house. I made 3 small changes. I doubled the salt in the meat mixture, and added garlic powder and onion powder along with the other seasonings for a little extra flavor. I didn’t have beef stock so I used a beef bouillon cube and a cup of water instead. I only had red potatoes so used 4 of them. It came out perfect.

  228. Xanthan gum will also thicken (is gluten free), but read the directions; you’ll need much less and will dissolve it before adding it into the mix. Bob’s Red Mill makes it and is at most grocery stores in the baking or gluten free aisle.

    Extremely easy to make. Since shepherd’s pie has a distinct flavor due to the spices, I didn’t deviate from that other than salting to taste if it needed a bit more salt. Also, I used instant mashed potatoes because that’s the kind of potatoes used when I’ve bought shep pie from somewhere. I wanted to recreate that consistency. I used 2 packs of Idaho brand, but I followed the remainder of the potato topping instructions like using half n half, butter, garlic & parm etc. Then I used frozen mixed veggies, so there were a few lima beans and green beans in there. Overall great taste and very easy to make, esp with instant potatoes.

    Pretty much a perfect cottage pie! I blended the spices through tomato paste to make it easier/quicker as I use Better than Bouillon. 9 servings fills a 9×13 pan perfectly. I added a quarter cup of red wine to the meat. Next time, I’ll go on the smaller side of the potatoes as it was a bit potato heavy.

    The prep time for this recipe was about 20 minutes. I switched up the order slightly. While the seasoned ground beef browned, I diced my onion and some garlic. After I drained the fat from the meet, I added onions and seasonings. I did not have tomato paste, so I used a can of tomato sauce. Once the flour and broth was added, I had a tasty gravy! My husband said it tasted almost like my beef stew. It was a hit!

    1. I’ve made a similar version using ground turkey that came out really well. The chicken flavor may not go well with the beef broth and worcestershire sauce, but you could try subbing chicken or veggie broth. Cooking is an adventure!

  247. I love this recipe. I doubled so I could send a casserole to my in-laws as my mil doesn’t cook anymore. Thyme and rosemary were a bit too strong for me, so I added a bit extra Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, and beef broth. Also, I didn’t have any corn so I subbed green beans. The only other thing I did differently was to use a container of pre-made mashed potatoes. Added the seasonings, garlic, and parm to them. this is a great time saver for a busy weeknight.     1. I used arrowroot instead of flour and it came out incredible!!! It’s much healthier for you than flour and it doesn’t give you that bloating feeling.

    2. You can mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 4 ounces of cold water, mix well until the cornstarch is fully dissolved (add more water if necessary), and add to the pan in place of the flour (step 5). It’s important that you use cold water or the cornstarch will be lumpy. The sauce should be noticeably thicker after the 5 minute simmer.

    3. I rarely leave comments on recipes, but I’ve been using this one for years now and it is amazing! I have tweaked it a bit over the years and use an Italian herb blend rather than the herbs listed. I still put as much parsley as the recipe calls for. I also double the Worcestershire and use a bag of mixed veg instead of just corn, peas, and carrots. I use salt and garlic to taste rather than measuring. It’s so good, my picky 6 year old goes for seconds and my meat and potatoes fiance loves eating his veggies!

    1. I use home canned green beans 1st then add the cooked meat and last layer the mashed potatoes. I do drain the liquid from the beans before putting them in the casserole dish and I make sure I seal the potatoes to the edge of the dish to keep it from drying. The ingredients in the meat and potatoes are about the same as this recipe.

    2. Those store bought mashed potatoes are a godsend. There are some very tasty ones and it streamlines recipes like this and more!

    I have several recipes for Sheppard’s pie, and this one is a keeper! I took an ear of fresh corn and used the corn in with the meat and other veggies, also added about 3 tablespoons of horseradish to the mashed potatoes and it was out of this world. Also topped the potatoes with more cheese and stuck the dish under the broiler to melt and brown the cheese. It was picture perfect for my guests who were most impressed!!

      Make sure you drain the hamburger and onion mixture before adding anything else. It doesn’t say to , so I’m not sure if you did. That should help

    2. I prefer to cook my ground beef with a lid on to retain the moisture in the pan, often also cooking it from frozen or sometimes partially thawed. Once it’s cooked through but still full of moisture I drain the meat (can use a colander). Much of the grease is removed when doing this. I then add my seasonings after this step and then return to heat to brown and continue with recipe. Great recipe!!! Made this today and it was loved by all. Definitely going to be a keeper in my recipe book.

      The ground lamb seems to.have more moisture than ground beef. I love.this recipe but may use a little.less stock. The lamb may have.less.moisture depending whether it is.bought in a packet or from a butcher

    5. You could try using a lower fat ground beef, like 90/10 -or- after you cook the meat remove all the drippings from the pan, -or- place all the meat on a paper towel to soak up the fat. I love this recipe too!

    I have used this recipe exactly as is, twice before. My whole family loved it. This time I doubled it as there are never leftovers. Only changes I made, I added a 1/2 cup extra broth and more vegetables. Added some green beans as well. When making the mashed potatoes, I added about 3/4 of a cup beef broth(it was what was left over). Potatoes came out super creamy and loaded with added flovor. My family and I love this recipe.     I came across this recipe and made it.
    This is now my official pie recipe I use. So delicious.
    Tonight I’ll try half broth and half red wine. It should add a little something.

    1. I make double or triple recipe of meat mixture and freeze that. Thaw one portion in fridge overnight and make the potatoes fresh. Very yummy recipe.

    I love the ease of this recipe with the following additions/changes. I use half red wine and half stock for a more traditional sauce. I also add sliced mushrooms which I sauté the onions. I too make it in a cast iron pan so it’s a one pot meal. If anyone does add mushroom be sure to consider your liquids. I like a lot of gravy so I don’t reduce but others might like a tighter sauce.

    For the potatoes I use heavy cream and two egg yolks added to the mix. It produces a creamier potatoes which I like to pipe on top “to make it fancy” my boys would say.

    Sheperd’s pie is a favourite of mine. I travel to the UK often and always enjoy trying country versions. If your readers like traditional and fun British dishes, give a Sussex pond pudding a go! It’s delicious and such a show piece.

      I liked this recipe. I’ve had many a Shepard’s pie, and I think the biggest challenge is making sure the veggies and meat aren’t too liquid-y, and the addition of the flour and tomato paste do help to thicken it nicely. My only concern is the amount of potatoes listed (I believe it says two large potatoes) is quite comical! I ended up using about 8 medium-sized potatoes and it was *just* enough to cover in my 9×11 pan. I will most likely use even more potatoes, next time around, and perhaps add a little wine to the broth. One change I made, I took a mixture of mozerella, Romano, and some of the Parmesan cheese and dusted it over the top of the potatoes right before I put it in the oven. This created a nice cheesy crust on top, and was a nice texture addition to the creamy potatoes. I also used fresh parsley, thyme, and a little rosemary since I had them on hand. Very much enjoy the flexibility of this recipe, and how you can really play with spices and seasonings.

    Made it this evening with a few minor variations; I used red wine instead of tomato paste, an extra tbsp of flour due to the increase in fluids, 1/4 cup of Pho Broth/3/4 cup of Beef broth (a little extra zing). I also didn’t have corn, boiled fresh mini carrots with the potatoes, then diced them and added to the filling. I baked for the first minutes as specified, then added a layer of cheeses (Cheddar, Provolone, Asiago) and topped with crushed walnuts for the last baking period.

    All minor improvisations based on what I had available – except the toppings. Hands down, the best I’ve eaten, and I first started making versions of Shepherd’s Pie 55 years ago as a young boy with two working parents. I thought I had a great recipe, but I bow to the greater talent! Thank you!! Thank you!!!

      For a firmer filling you can alter your ratio of flour and stock, so add maybe half a spoonful more flour or use a little less stock. Just make sure when using more flour you cook it the mix for a bit longer to take out the raw flour flavor.

      If your potatoes are too soft add less half and half. What I personally like to do is switch half and half for whole milk and increase the amount of parm by a little less than 1/4th cup. Just take a little extra time to reduce the mix a bit more (I cooked mine on the stove for about 15 mins after adding the flour) and that should help make it firmer!

    I love Shepherds Pie and this is a good, easy recipe. I followed the recipe but added more veg as my family likes it a little lighter.

    1. You probably won’t get the thickening you want from almond or coconut flour. You might try all purpose GF Flour like Kjng Arthur or Krusteaz. I’ve had good results with them.

    2. No on both. King Arthur has a gluten free flour called Measure for Measure that is a 1:1 sub for wheat flour. It will work perfectly. Take care!

    3. Chickpea flour works well as a thickener in savory dishes. I have also taken a handful of raw cashews and ground them into a flour and used that.

    Great recipe. To limit dishes, I cooked the beef filling in a cast iron and just topped with the potatoes. Our family likes to mix a bit of mayonnaise into the potatoes for flavor but I increased the cooking time an extra 10 minutes for a total of 40 minutes as the cast iron takes time to heat up. Regardless, it was a hit for dinner!

    1. Half and half is a mixture of half milk, half heavy cream. It’s basically just a thicker, creamier milk. Great for potatoes, shit for anything else 😅

    2. Half and half is a mixture of milk and cream(half of each). It’s in the dairy section next to the cream. They mean 1/3 cup of “half and half”.

    3. Half and half refers to 10% cream. So a third cup of 10% cream. If you don’t have that you could replace with 18% or 33%.

  306. I lived in the UK and have missed real Shepherd’s pie with lamb so much. I came across lamb in the store and then found this recipe. This is the real deal. I did make some adjustments. I partially cooked the meat first and drained it. Then I cooked the onions and used some of the lamb fat instead of oil and then added the lamb meat back in. I also doubled the vegitables. My elementary aged son loved it so much that he asked me to make it again for his birthday dinner! (Draining the fat made it less mushy and runny.) I served it with Yorkshire Pudding and two veg on the side just like my best friends Mum back in England does. Yum!!!

    My friends husband just got out of the hospital, they’re newlyweds so she’s had a pretty rough week, so I asked what they were hungry for,and I’d cook it for them. (He was tired of bland hosp food,) after much deliberation they told me Shepards Pie. I’m 58 and I cook alot, and I’m a good, no great cook, and I’ve never made a Shepards Pie. I found this one, and boy am I ever glad I did. This is fantastic, they loved it so much, shes never going to use her old recipe, only this one. I of course tweeked a few things.     My family loves this. I make it with arrowroot flour instead of regular flour and regular frozen mixed vegetables. The family loves it and I’m able to keep it gluten free (we have a family member with an auto immune disease that gluten aggravates).

    It’s definitely on a regular rotation.

    For years I have been trying to figure out what is in an area Irish restaurant’s shepherd’s pie and this recipe hit the nail on the head. It is THE best shepherd’s pie I’ve had in a long time and is almost a dead ringer to the restaurant’s pie taste. I will never make a plain old shepherd’s pie again………we LOVE this recipe!!!
