The Best Classic Shepherd’s Pie – AKA Shepards Pie or Cottage Pie. Ground Beef (or lamb) with vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with cheesy mashed potatoes, and baked.

Classic Shepards Pie on a plate

Shepherd’s Pie

So, this is how you spell it:  Shepherd’s Pie.  But, from doing a quick google search, it came to my attention that TONS of people think it’s Shepards Pie.

Irish Shepherd’s Pie

Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie would actually call for ground lamb.  The difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie is the meat.  Cottage Pie uses ground beef, while Shepherd’s Pie uses ground lamb.

I called this recipe Shepherd’s Pie.  But, I wrote the recipe so that you could use ground beef or ground lamb.

I typically use ground beef because it is widely available.  But, for a special occasion, like St. Patricks day, I would use ground lamb.

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Making the best Shepherd’s Pie is not difficult.  But, there are a few steps to it.  You have to make the meat mixture, the mashed potatoes, assemble the casserole, and bake it.

I find that the easiest way to make this dish is to work ahead.  You could make the beef or lamb mixture ahead of time.  Or, you could make the mashed potatoes ahead of time.

You could also make the whole recipe ahead of time.  Just assemble the casserole, cover the dish, and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it.  I find it is best to bake it within 3 days of preparing it.

When you are ready to bake it, take it out of the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before you need to bake it to let it start coming to room temperature.  Uncover it, and bake.

Ingredients

Meat Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 lb. 90% lean ground beef -or ground lamb
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves -minced
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup frozen mixed peas & carrots*
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels

Potato Topping:

  • 1 ½ - 2 lb. russet potatoes -about 2 large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter -1 stick
  • 1/3 cup half & half
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Instructions

Make the Meat Filling.

  • Add the oil to a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the onions. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef (or ground lamb) to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Add the parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and and pepper. Stir well. Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the flour and tomato paste. Stir until well incorporated and no clumps of tomato paste remain.
  • Add the broth, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen corn. Bring the liquid to a boil then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Set the meat mixture aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Make the potato topping.

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot. Cover the potatoes with water. Bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return the potatoes to the hot pot. Let the potatoes rest in the hot pot for 1 minute to evaporate any remaining liquid.
  • Add butter, half & half, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes and stir until all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Add the parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Stir until well combined.

Assemble the casserole.

  • Pour the meat mixture into a 9x9 (or 7x11) inch baking dish. Spread it out into an even layer. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat. Carefully spread into an even layer.
  • If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet so that the filling doesn’t bubble over into your oven. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.** Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

*If you can’t find frozen mixed peas and carrots, you could use ½ cup frozen peas and ½ cup frozen sliced carrots.
**Bake at 400° F.  Start preheating the oven after you make the meat mixture (listed in step 6).

  1. I made this yesterday for a St. Patrick’s day party. People raved about how good it was, “better than my grandmothers”, was a comment! Wow I did use fresh herbs and Trader Joe’s spring peas.

  2. 5 stars
Everyone in my family loved this! And that is rare. High calorie recipe, but it tastes that much better because of it!

  3. 5 stars
Very good! Great flavor! I did add more onions and extra cheese ! Did add mozzarella cheese and Parmesan on top

  4. Made for the first time tonight. Followed recipe except only one clove garlic. It was delicious! Husband wanted a third helping! Loved the seasons especially the thyme and rosemary flavors. I also used fresh parsley instead of dried since I had it. Will make this again for sure!

  5. 5 stars
Thanks Amanda, great recipe . . . . BTW : I substituted London Broil (chipped up small) instead of the ground beef. Yummy!!!

  6. 5 stars
I love this recipe so much. I make it vegetarian by using Impossible Burger and veggie broth, and my non-veg friends have always raved about it!

  7. 5 stars
Made this for a Sea Shanty Party aka St Patrick’s Day. It was delicious and casserole dish was scraped clean. I will definitely make again.

  8. 5 stars
All the ratios were spot on. Only thing I did different was ADD 1 big fat leek in addition to the onion. Delicious!!

  9. this recipe was great! so delicious. If you don’t want to deal with the tomato paste and flour you can just add some tomato sauce

  10. 5 stars
I used Bob Evans mashed potatoes as a quick cheat and added garlic and parmesan only. Great recommendation to prepare ahead of time! Thanks for the recipe!

  11. 5 stars
It is pi day 3/14 and so of course we have to have pie for dinner and what better pie than shepherd’s pie — made with lamb. Yummy and easy recipe. I used fresh carrots and frozen green beans, corn and peas and used chicken broth rather than beef — came out beautifully. (oh and I do it in a 9 inch pie plate for pie day.

    1. 5 stars
I think this was my best Shepard’s pie yet! I didn’t have rosemary and I did add some Sazon to the ground beef. Thank you for this delicious recipe!

  12. 5 stars
Just made this. Very tasty. Will definitely make again. I did replace Parmesan cheese with cheddar Jack as I didn’t have shredded Parmesan. Also used white onion which I prefer over yellow.; and cornstarch over flour. I like all recipes that are labeled “easy” and this was.

  13. 5 stars
Amazing dish! It’s a keeper for sure! So much flavour. I adjusted the recipe a little bit as I didn’t have a lb of ground beef, slightly less. Followed it with the same ingredients. I used only a tablespoon for oil and adjusted butter with less than half of what was suggested for the potatoes. I didn’t have half and half but I had 18% cream and used it instead. Thank you for sharing it!

  14. I made this based on reviews, but also changed it up a bit: instead of just ground beef I used a 50/50 of ground brisket and sirloin, then topped the dish off with shredded sharp cheddar. I have 3 boys age 11-20 and they loved it! Brisket is the way to go

  15. 5 stars
Made this for the first time and the family loved it! Wont be the last time I make it! Love ❤️

  16. 5 stars
We really enjoyed this and didn’t fiddle with the recipe. Haven’t made cottage pie in ages and found this one very tasty (enough to make it x 3 to freeze).

  17. 5 stars
I tried this recipe tonight and it was so easy and huge hit, my family loved it! Best Shepard’s pie recipe that I’ve tried so far.

  18. 4 stars
I made this tonight. It was pretty good although I would have liked it to have more of a slight gravy sauce to it. Any suggestions? I will definitely try it again in that manner.

  19. 5 stars
Delicious. Underestimated on my potatoes so I didn’t have enough mashed potatoes. Luckily, I had some leftover from a few days ago from another meal but everything was just perfect. It was really good. Thank you so much.

  20. 5 stars
This recipe is truly excellent. I followed the recipe almost exactly, just used fresh carrots instead of frozen, which I sautéed with the onions to soften. flavors came together so nicely and complemented each other perfectly. My kids had seconds and the tiny serving left over was *chefs kiss* delicious the next day. Will definitely add this to my regular rotation!

**My only recommendation is to soak up any extra grease before thickening, so it doesn’t seep up into the potatoes, but I’m sure that’s dependent on what meat you use.

  21. 5 stars
First time making Shepard’s pie and it was sooo delicious. Made it by request for a birthday dinner and everyone raved about it!

  22. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! The best recipe for shepherds pie I have ever used. Beats all others by a country mile. My husband raved over it! Definitely my new standby for shepherds pie.

  23. 5 stars
Loved it! I just used corn because it was all that I had, but it was great. Reminded me of my Mom’s. The mashed potatoes were so tasty!

  24. 5 stars
Easy to make. I made it with ground lamb. I absorbed most of the lamb drippings with paper towels before putting the meat mixture into a lightly greesed pan. I also used frozen green beans instead of peas.

  25. 5 stars
I love this Shepherd’s Pie. Best ever. Have made it several times and always with lamb and fresh cooked . I think the herbs (rosemary, thyme and Parsley) make the dish.

  26. 5 stars
Wow! This was good. The only complaint I got was that my son couldn’t get it in his mouth fast enough. Great recipe! Thank you!

  27. The best recipe out there. We just loved it. I did do traditional way and used some lamb. Makes for a more velvety texture to the meat.

  28. 5 stars
Thanks for the recipe. I used left over meatloaf and doctored up some store bought mashed potatoes and added in seasonings as in your recipe. My husband has been wanting shepherd’s pie from when he worked over on the north east coast

  29. 5 stars
Super tasty and easy to make. I sautéed my onion in butter and added a little more Worcestershire sauce and Parmesan cheese than was called for. Great recipe!

  30. 5 stars
Tonight was awesome.. we used the recipe and was stunned by how great the flavor is.. it was definitely perfect. The family dug right in..
We will definitely use this again…the spices and ingredients was spot on.. thank you for the recipe we all loved it..😁🙏😊💕

  31. 5 stars
100%%%% delicious!!! Made this is it was a hit. My son said it was the best sheperd’s pie he has ever tasted loll my man loved it so much he had to share with his coworkers☺️recommend big time

  32. 5 stars
This is so good! I have made it many times and it’s one of my favorites. As another commenter suggested, I have started straining the meat after it’s cooked. It’s a little greasy, otherwise.

  33. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! One of my absolute favorite recipes of all time. And, if I think it tasted good the first day, it was 100 times more delicious the second day.

  34. 5 stars
Great recipe! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Added an egg yoke to the potatoes making them a little bit richer & used fresh vegetables but besides that, followed the recipe as instructed. I will definitely be making this again. Thanks!

  35. 5 stars
This came out excellent, didn’t have any thyme or garlic powder on hand but I subbed that for garlic salt for the potatoes without adding regular salt, I’ll just need to remember the thyme next time but the meat filling was still delicious, also put a bit of shredded cheese on top before tossing it in the oven.

Didn’t bother measuring the salt/pepper/olive oil, just need enough oil to get a coating on the pan and salt/pepper I used to my preference, at the end of the day I’ll be making this one again easily and can probably come up with some good variations with this as the base.

  36. 5 stars
Fabulous recipe! I make it a lot with no changes. Especially like the specific measurements– as in 1 cup of onions instead of 1 medium.

  37. 5 stars
From New Orleans, where we enjoy our food well seasoned this recipe is Absolutely Delicious. ⚜️
Also, it’s a very convenient dish for Mardi Gras guest. 💜💚💛

    1. 5 stars
This one’s easy to make gluten and dairy free. First of all, just thicken with corn starch (there are other thickeners that are gluten free). For the potatoes, I use 2/3 potatoes and 1/3 steamed cauliflower (in steamer, potatoes on the bottom and cauliflower in the steamer). I then mix the cauliflower with an immersion hand-held blender and mash the potatoes separately, then join together. Season. There is no need for milk or cream because the cauliflower has more water content and keeps the potatoes lighter and fluffier. This is the only way that I prepare mashed potatoes. Added bonus–no one knows there is cauliflower and you’re adding vitamins!

    2. 5 stars
Cornstarch can be used in place of the flour using the same measurement. The difference is cornstarch HAS to be dissolved in COLD water first, then added to the mixture.

I have had okay results using coconut milk instead of the half n half and ghee in place of the butter (but that might not work with some diets.) I don’t have an answer for a cheese substitute as I haven’t found one I like

      Good luck

  38. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe multiple times and it’s delicious! It’s easy to make and uses ingredients I almost always have on hand, so no special trip to the store. It’s a family favorite and a staple in my dinner meals!

  39. 5 stars
The best ever shepherd’s pie I have ever made. Thank you for this wonderful recipes I have made it numerous times and it’s always a hit 💕

  40. 5 stars
I had a general idea of how shepherds pie is made but I knew I was missing something. I looked up a recipe and landed here. This is delicious! Printing the recipe for my permanent collection and adding to my normal rotation of dinners. Thanks so much. God bless🩷

  41. 5 stars
My family wants this on a regular basis after tonight. Great blend of spices and tasty potatoes. Very savory meal.

  42. 5 stars
I made this and it was so yummy! I cheated a bit and used premade mashed potatoes. I added the parmesan and a splash of cream, warmed them up a bit to make them spreadable and it worked great. I’m making a double batch for Sunday dinner today!

  43. 5 stars
This recipe is absolutely amazing! I make this dish almost weekly it is that good! I’m allergic to peas so I just use carrots and corn and it’s great. Highly recommend this recipe! In fact I’m on here now because I’m about to make it for dinner (and yes, I made it last week, too) 🙂 So yummy!!

  44. 5 stars
My significant other LOVES this recipe! He told me it’s the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe ever! I use diced fresh carrots and leave out the peas. I used 1 teaspoon oregano after I ran out of dried rosemary while recently making it againand it turned out fine. Highly recommended recipe!

  45. 5 stars
How would you bake this after you freeze it ? Thanks ! I’ve used this recipe before and love it so I want a little stash on the side.

  46. 5 stars
DELICIOUS….Quick and easy to make. I love that you use simple ingredients that I always have on hand. I have made this numerous times and it is always a family favorite. Thank You Amanda for a truly wonderful recipe.

  47. 5 stars
Great. Made it a few times. Subbed the potato for sweet potato and ground beef for turkey. Spices in the meat work great in turkey too.

  48. 5 stars
So delicious! I altered it to make it vegan so I used beyond beef, better than bouillon veggie base, oat milk and plant based butter. Also no parm cheese. It was amazing!!! Thank you for this delicious recipe.

  49. 5 stars
This is just the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I’ve ever made and/or eaten. Have played around with additions i.e. 2 Tablesoons of ketchup, a splash of red wine, using other vegetables, etc., but this original, basic recipe is great!!! We love it. 🩷

  50. 5 stars
Very delicious, I’m a single man; I made this for my dinner today and I’ve already had 4 servings. I’m going to make this tomorrow to divide into two servings and then put them into the freezer for a later day. Thanks for the recipe,

  51. 5 stars
This was my first shepherd’s pie I’ve ever made and the only recipe I will use— it’s that delicious!
After making four times now, the only thing I change up is to increase the sauce ingredients because I like the extra “sauciness.” Beef and veggie mixture I leave as written and increase the “wet” ingredients- again, personal preference for extra sauce. This is so good! Thank you for sharing!

  52. 5 stars
This was incredibly delicious. My husband and I enjoyed it very much and plan to share with friends and make again. Easy to follow and reg-u-lar ingredients that I didn’t cringe at cost of. Flavor profile was spot on. Thank you! It’s nice to have a cool weather dish.

  53. 5 stars
I have been making shepherds pie for years. This recipe is by far the best. I used ground turkey. Delicious!

  54. 5 stars
Thank you for providing your recipe! I have cooked without a recipe, and the worcestershire, tomato paste and flour were definitely the missing ingredients. My family agreed this “pie” was DEFINTELY better.
We are full and satisfied tonight!

  55. 5 stars
I made this with ground venison and it was awesome! Next time, I’ll add more corn, per my 12-year old’s request.

  56. 5 stars
I made this with minced lamb .. and did it in a large glass pan (did the 6 person recipe) .. so it was an equal layer of meat/veg moisture with the potatoes on top. Perfect wedge, with a nice side salad. As a Type 1 Diabetic who likes to try to make yummy recipes to keep blood sugars in a good Time in Range .. this is going to be part of my go to recipe for family. I cut up the remaining portions and they’re in the freezer for reheating for times I’m in a rush!

  57. 5 stars
The Shepherds pie recipe is simply delicious. This is the third time I have made this recipe and it always comes out perfect. This is a family favorite and wonderful to have on a cold winter’s night.

  58. 5 stars
I used impossible ground product instead of beef. I used butter instead of olive oil. I used vegetable broth instead of beef broth. I doubled the recipe.
My daughter told me to make this anytime and she couldn’t tell it wasn’t beef.
I found the seasonings amazing. I did use Parmesan/romano mix. But loved that it wasn’t cheddar. I love cheddar but appreciated a different cheese.
Will make again. Recommend!!! Thank you.

  59. 5 stars
This is absolutely delicious and was a total hit with my family! Thank you! Question – do you have suggestions to make a lower calorie version? Thank you so much

  60. 5 stars
This is the BEST shepherd’s pie I’ve ever tasted and I’ve tasted many. Everyone asks for this recipe. Pretty much on the weekly rotation during winter months. Thank you!

  61. 5 stars
This is the best Shepards Pie Recipe. My family and friends looked it and look forward to the next time I make it.

  62. 5 stars
Amazing flavour, but would recommend that the potatoes be started first, to cut down on prep time. 😀

  63. 5 stars
This recipe was AMAZING!!!!!! 10/5☆. 3 teens and a 7 year old gobbled this up all gone. Very happy family

  64. Unbelievable! Made 2 of them as one was for my in-laws: Mom phoned me immediately after supper to rave about it and asked me to make it for them again EXACTLY like that. The cook at the bar we were at asked for some. The Parmesan in the potatoes are key and I added a cup or two of cauliflower. Didn’t tell them that. 😎

  65. 5 stars
This recipe was fantastic. I’m a sucker for a good Shepard’s Pie. Super easy recipe to follow. Only thing I would do slightly different is add more veggies but that is a personal preference I love lots Of veggies in my stews and pies. Anyways, if you’re on the fence use my review to make your final decision. You won’t regret it. *I didn’t have frozen carrots on hand so used fresh carrots threw them in when the recipe asked. Initially was afraid the carrots wouldn’t soften but they do during the bake.

I have been searching for a Shepherd’s Pie recipe for months. I printed your recipe yesterday and decided to give it a try. I had two 12-year-old girls to feed and wanted something different to feed them. I was taking a huge chance because one of them didn’t like the food on her plate to touch each other. She eats one item at a time, never mixing flavors. I cook food so that the flavors complement each other and are to be eaten together. This recipe was exactly what I wanted in an American version of Shepherd’s Pie. The girls gobbled up their portions and absolutely loved the dish almost as much as I did. Thank you for taking the time to create a superb dish.
    Sincerely, Rebecca H.

One of my favorite recipes of all time. I love serving it to my family, as they always compliment me each and every time!

  68. 5 stars
Made this dish last week with fresh carrots, minced beef and garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. Tasted great!

    Greetings from The Netherlands!

  69. 4 stars
l made too few potatoes, and in my meat mixture l used too much meat (1 1/2 lbs).. and so when out of the oven, it was all too soupy .. but it was my first try!
.. So l took out a serving, spread it out, made more potatoes and re-baked it.
Will let you know, it’s still in there!
    lt tastes very good mmmm

  70. 5 stars
Outstanding!!I didn’t have Rosemary or Parsley, but it didn’t matter. I used 1 1/2 lbs ground chuck, canned vegies, and Bob Evans mashed potatoes. It turned out great!!

  71. 5 stars
This is the best shepherds pie I have ever eaten. It’s so savory!!! My fiancé loved it! The only thing I might change is draining the meat before adding seasonings etc. It was very oily but besides that a wonderful meal. This will be my go to recipe from now on. Thanks!

  72. 5 stars
Outstanding recipe, my second go around with it. I went with a bolder approach and added a little more garlic to both the potatoes and meat mix. I also used a little less rosemary and we served with dinner rolls. Next time I’m going to try it with a nice moist cornbread for the side. SO BOMB, thank you for this!

  73. 5 stars
Made a double batch of this recipe with my 12 year old granddaughter today while her grandfather, parents and siblings watched football and ran around the house. She followed the instructions to the letter, except I cut down on the oil a bit. It turned out DELICIOUS! She was so proud of her superb accomplishment! Great recipe to make with a child or grandchild that is old enough to be safely in the kitchen. The expression of pure joy as everyone praised her dish was priceless!

  74. 5 stars
Recipe turned out perfect on the first try! I will definitely be making this again. So excited to have found a simple and delicious Shepherd’s Pie recipe.

  75. 5 stars
Delicious! Made this for family guests during the holidays and it was a big hit. They said it was the BEST shepherds pie they had ever tasted. I did substitute ready-made Bob Even’s mashed potatoes, instead of making them from scratch and it was delicious…quick and easy, too. Definitely will be making this recipe again!

  76. 5 stars
We loved this version of Shepherd’s Pie, and watched Escape to the Country while enjoying our dinner and felt very cozy and English. I don’t like the reviews where people say all the things they changed, so I won’t go into that (it’s just about what I had on hand etc). I liked working with the instructions and everything came together perfectly.

  77. 5 stars
This was easy enough to cook that my elementary aged nieces were able to help. It was so successful at the dinner table that my 98 yr old Grandma had seconds.

  78. 5 stars
This thing slaps. I made it like three times, will make it again. I made some slight alterations to the recipe when I made it, I didn’t have rosemary or thyme, so I used sage and oregano as spices, I used whole milk in the potatos, and fresh carrots and canned peas for the veggies, still tasted absolutely amazing. I will say, if you do use fresh carrots, cut them small so that they cook throughly.

Either way, we love this at the house.

  79. 5 stars
My mom made this dish growing up but it was super basic. THIS recipe is great! My husband just said I need to start a Favorite Recipe book for our family and put this in it.

  80. 5 stars
This shepherds pie was delicious! We couldn’t stop eating it and I was glad I made a little extra to last us a couple extra meals. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us!

  81. 5 stars
This is the very best recipe for Shepherd’s Pie I’ve ever tried! No complaints from me and many compliments
    from my family.

  82. 5 stars
Perfect recipe…however, I skipped the peas and carrots and mostly layered some corn and a miniscule amount into the meat mixture. Thanks for the tips to make more flavorful than I….(My mom) make it.

  83. Have you tried freezing it before baking?
I am making double the recipe and there’s no way we’ll eat this all. I have one dish in the oven and the other one assembled.. just not sure about the mashed potatoes being okay to freeze.

  84. 5 stars
REALLY good! Deserves 10 stars. I followed the recipe with a couple minor changes. My potatoes were mashed using butter and cream. No Parmesan or garlic powder. In order to avoid clumping tomato paste I mixed it into and added along with the broth. The veggies were a standard frozen mixture. I’ll be making this often and won’t have to feel guilty throwing away leftover mashed potatoes anymore.

Wonderful dish. I doubled the recipe and that worked fine. My only suggestion is to drain the ground meat/onion mixture before adding the remaining ingredients. The recipe didn’t state that, and I always follow the recipe on my first time out…so was a bit oilier than it should have been. Otherwise, a very tasty dish!!!

  86. 5 stars
I didn’t have a 9×9 pan so I used a 9×13 – in which case I prob should’ve doubled or atleast done 1.5x the recipe to make it fill up higher in the pan- regardless it was delicious ! My husband loved it as well & I’ll definitely make it again.

  87. 5 stars
Super recipe. Made as directed except used butter instead of oil. Used Angus beef which is 85/15. Drained beef after cooking. Perfectly seasoned.i even ate it after tasting beef mixture. (I rarely eat beef). You get a 15 for ease of preparation. ******** wonderful. Pared with steamed cabbage and corn muffins for a exceptional meal. Thanks again fir the recipe. My family tore into it before I could get a picture.

  88. 5 stars
I’ve never left a review for a recipe before but this was INCREDIBLE. Absolutely delicious. Such a crowd pleaser. Will definitely be making this again.

  89. 5 stars
Highly recommend this recipe! The instruction was clear and easy to follow and the result was stunningly delicious! Had to replace the parsley with oregano and parmasan with Jarlsberg due to availability, but still very very tasty!

  90. 5 stars
I tried tonight for dinner, it was really good. My husband loved it and said I need to keep this recipe.
    Thanks so much
    Kathy

This is my family’s absolute favorite recipe we’ve ever had! Easy to make and seasonings are superb! I didn’t have beef broth one time so I used Campbell’s beef consume and it was still amazing!

  92. 5 stars
This was DELICIOUS! My husband and I are vegetarian so we used Impossible meat substitute for the ground meat, vegan Worcestershire, and vegetable stock instead of beef stock. The recipe came out SO delicious and savory. We will make this again!

  93. 5 stars
I love this recipe. I’ve made it as written several times. This time I decided to tweak it just a little. I had canned my garden potatoes and wasn’t thrilled with the texture, they were supposed to be fries, so I used in this recipe. I also had a half bottle of Guinness so added 2 tablespoons to the filling. I’m done tweaking the recipe. It was amazing

  94. I made the 9 serving version and it tasted great. It called for 3 tablespoons olive oil, but 1 tablespoon would have done it. Next time I’ll strain the meat filling or used less oil, maybe even a tab of butter to saute the onions. Overall the rosemary and thyme made the dish! Thanks.

    1. 5 stars
      I hate shepherd’s pie!
It’s my partners favourite so I thought ide treat her to this and I had it for dinner also. I loved it. Making it tonight for the second time

    2. 5 stars
This is a classic dish. I’ve made it several times. Everyone has it raves about it. Using lamb makes it authentic. Great recipe definitely in my rotation.

    3. 5 stars
A family favorite. Love this recipe!! Tried the exact recipe, amazing!! Have made it with ground turkey, extra veggies, etc. It always turns out great!

    4. 5 stars
We just had this tonight and it was amazing!! I used ground antelope, didn’t have parmesan cheese, so used cheddar, and eyeballed the seasonings. I probably went over on those, but we like a lot of seasoning. The flavor combination is so good! Try this recipe!! You won’t regret it!

    5. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe many times it’s so delicious with beef or lamb butbmynpreference is lamb. I use fresh carrots cooked in advance. Then add the frozen peas. I haven’t added the corn as I don’t usually keep them as a staple.

    6. 5 stars
Outstanding and tasty. Have tried with chicken and just as good. Fun to add other goodies to the blend such as broccoli, peppers ( mild to hot all work), and other sauces than Worcestershire.

    7. I like the idea of using a little butter to saute the onions. I’m going to try that next. I don’t think it will take much with a non-stick skillet. I agree that the herbs and spices made the dish. I made the 6 serving, gave 4 servings to my son and grandkids and was then sad that there wasn’t much left for me!

    1. 5 stars
I always use fresh carrots. Small chopped and cook them a minute or 2 longer than the onion so that they’re soft before adding to the meat mixture.

    2. 5 stars
I do! I slice baby carrots and steam in the microwave for a couple minutes before adding to the meat mix. Hope that helps!

    3. I use fresh carrots when using this recipe. I simply cook the onions and carrots together, turns out great.

    4. 5 stars
that’s what I did, sauted fresh carrots and celery with the onions. My hubby doesn’t like peas so that’s what I substituted the peas with. It was good!

    5. 5 stars
I made this with fresh carrots. I boiled 2 with the potatoes, chopped them up and added it to the meat mixture. Turned out great!

    6. My husband doesn’t like peas, so I dice carrots and sauté them with the onions and add frozen cut green beans and corn. For days that I’m feeling lazy, I use refrigerated mashed potatoes and add the other ingredients. This is a great tasting recipe and easy to make.

    7. 5 stars
We used fresh carrots and just boiled them in with the potatoes for half the time until they were fork tender. Chopped them up after and incorporated with the meat mixture. Delish!

    8. 5 stars
I have used diced fresh carrots every time I’ve made this recipe. I cook them with the chopped onion at the beginning, and so far no issues. Hope this helps!

    9. 5 stars
Thee best shepherds pie, I’ve tasted, thank you for the share.. I had used red potatoes with the skin, pretty darn good!!

    10. 5 stars
I have found that a good substitute for mixes of rosemary and thyme is herbs de Provence.
This recipe is so flavorful, make it as a favor for my wife when I have business travel scheduled so she can relax and not cook for one.
      Highly recommend this.

    11. 5 stars
I made this today and it was delicious!
I used fresh carrots that I had diced and boiled. Also, I didn’t have frozen corn or peas, so I used canned French cut beans.

    1. 5 stars
Hi, thanks for the great recipe! I’ve made this a bunch of times. Usually when my kids come over to wat my food lol. Cheap and easy! Always a big hit! I follow the recipe because it never needs adjustments for me. Re-heats great but I hardly ever have leftovers =/

  95. 5 stars
Made a double recipe exactly as written except for no Parmesan in the potatoes because I didn’t have any. It was so good. This will go into the rotation for sure. Also a great dish for taking to other people.

    1. YES! Have done so many times! Both prior to baking, to give away. And after baking, leftovers for future busy day! Both reheat great! Great recipe!

    2. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it was sooo good. I thought an entire stick of butter seemed too much so I used 6 T. And the potatoes needed more liquid so I added some milk. All in all worthy of repeat!

    3. Yes. I find it’s best to freeze before you cook it in the oven and when you bake it later, cover for 20 minutes and then bake uncovered another 30 minutes.

  96. 5 stars
I cooked this for my parents and sister as an early Christmas gathering. The direction in which the world is going, we must make every moment a moment of celebration and gratitude while we can. And so, this meal offered much comfort at a time when the world has gone absolutely mad.
Back to the recipe: I made this the night before as part of my ‘Old School Lunches’ themed menu, which my parents adored (for afters, we had Bread and Butter pudding). Just make sure to take it out the fridge an hour in advance so it gets to room temperature. I served it piping hot! People said it was aromatic, full bodied, and the mash to meat ratio made it a hearty meal all on its own with no sides necessary. It is the perfect meal on a cold winter’s day. This recipe is definitely a keeper!

  97. 5 stars
Wow! This recipe is flavor packed and hearty. Perfect for a cold winter night. I’m currently making this recipe like every other week and it goes fast! Thank you!!

  98. 5 stars
I made this for dinner tonight and it was a big hit with both adults and grandkids. We loved it and it will be a regular item on our menu! Thank you!

  99. 5 stars
I never comment on recipes but feel that I owe it to this one because it basically keeps me alive… We make this for dinner at least once or twice a week and it’s so easy, gets you good nutrition, and tastes absolutely amazing! I use white wine instead of bone broth sometimes for extra flavor. I usually make more mashed potatoes than it calls for and add its ingredients to taste (usually end up using half a stick of butter, not full.) Excellent, classic recipe.

  100. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe twice and it is a big hit, especially when re-heated the next day. I substituted a few ingredients with what I had on hand (celery and bell pepper instead of chopped onions, pizza sauce instead of tomato paste and basil instead of the dried herbs). I also omitted the cheese and garlic powder from the mashed potatoes.
I was wondering what the recommended oven temperature and heating time is? Thank you for this wonderful “comfort food” recipe.

    1. 5 stars
Best Shepherd’s Pie recipe hands down. Only thing I add is a pinch of sage and a bay leaf while simmering (which I remove before putting it all together for the oven).

  101. 5 stars
This is such a great recipe. My whole family loves it , even the kids. We use grass fed only beef that we purchase from a local farmer and it has the best flavor which really adds another level of depth to the recipe. This one’s a keeper!!!

  102. 5 stars
i was CRAVING shepherd’s pie for some reason and I found this recipe!
    1) I love LOVE the pictures showing step by step instructions, amazing.
    2) I added a lil sprinkle sprinkle of curry and nutmeg and it was chef’s kiss and broiled it at the very end for 5 minutes
    3) This was DELICIOUSSSS, love this recipe, sent this to my friend.

  103. 5 stars
Last night, I made short ribs and mashed potatoes. Was wondering what I could do with the leftovers until I stumbled upon this recipe. Used the mashed potatoes for this. Very easy and delicious! Tomorrow, will used the short ribs for burritos. 🙂

  104. 5 stars
Normally I don’t review or comment on recipes, but this one was PHENOMENAL! The recipe was so easy to make and lasted about 10 minutes in our home until the dish was EMPTY. A total win!!

  105. 5 stars
Best ever! I’ve made this several times and it never last long in my family. I will never make any other kind of Shepards pie but this one.

  106. Tried this for the first time tonight- excellent and much more straightforward to put together than I anticipated. A win and will definitely make this again!

  107. Can I freeze this? If yes, at what temperature and how long?
It’s a gift to a friend expecting identical twins!

    Thanks!!

  108. 5 stars
Pretty good I didn’t add Parmesan in the mashed potatoes I made extra potatoes and added more garlic salt and the milk. I’m adding tex mex cheese half way thru cooking 😄 I’m picky I always add extra ingredients…

  109. 5 stars
OMG, this was fantastic! I rarely cook but really wanted to give this a try. Being a cooking newbie, all of the seasonings were just bought and unopened at the time I needed them. The time it took me to open everything caused my meat mixture to start to run dry. I had to add more broth so there would actually be liquid for which to bring to a boil and simmer. I probably used 2 to 2 1/2 cups of broth! Other than being hectic for a bit, it turned out just fine. The mashed potato topping was amazing! I’ll use that recipe for mashed potatoes in the future! The Shepherds Pie came out golden and bubbly delicious. To reduce stress, next time I’ll measure out dry ingredients first. All my spices are now open so that issue won’t happen again. If I can make it, ANYONE CAN! I GIVE IT 5 STARS!!!

  110. 5 stars
I have never ever liked shepards pie. I found this recipe when we were trying to find a meal to serve at a Woman’s shelter/ home. Everybody loved it so much I felt I should be an adult and try it again myself. I was shocked at how good this was! We are now making this a part of our menu rotation at home. It was not difficult to make and the only suggestion I would make is to double the mashed potatoes.

  111. 5 stars
I’m not sure if I’ve commented on this recipe before but I am happy to do so again. It’s absolutely delicious! This is my second time making it, and my husband loves it. I love it! My husband commented that I need to make it more than once a year. It’s flavorful and just a good hearty meal. I love a great casserole! I mix and add a little more potatoes and milk together on top. What I also like is that I have most ingredients already with the exception of the parmesan. Thankfully, I had it in stock. Can’t go wrong with this dish for family or guests.

    1. 5 stars
I made it but with a few tweaks hear and there. Like I used sour cream as well as a little whipping cream with the milk, in the potatoes. I also put cheese over it all and cooked till the top is crisp. It it awesome!
I took it to work for the guys I work with. One of the bosses said I could keep my job if I make it once a week. He is going to pay for the ingredients for it. It’s a hit.

  112. 5 stars
Trying your recipe it is similar to last one I made but i forgot where i got that e-recipe so here we are. It’s coming now and looks really good. I’m using potatoes leftovers from Thanksgiving and added more cheese. Our favorite is the Mexican mix of 4 cheeses and I put a layer over the meat mixture and again to top the potatoes 😋 My son was just glad we are almost out of Thanksgiving leftovers so this dish didn’t have ham or turkey in it 😆

    1. 5 stars
Very flavorful and easy to make! Since I did not have any beef broth on hand, I added a brown gravy mix with same amount of water and omitted the flour. It was delicious! Also no Parmesan so I used a shredded Tex mex cheese mix.

    2. 5 stars
You’re making me HUNGRY Sue!! LoL!! In all the right ways may I add!! I’m a huge cheese head meself an would see myself doin the exact same thing in the next few nights whenst I set forth to make this dish for myself an the wife for the very first time ever!!

    1. 5 stars
Wow! I just made this for dinner and consider myself a bit of a connoisseur, this recipe is amazing! I didn’t change a thing and I’m glad I didn’t. Thank you for sharing this with the world 😋

  113. 5 stars
Love, love, love this recipe! So tasty. I used bags of frozen veggies and (gasp) instant mashers due to time crunch.

  114. 5 stars
I have been used to a simple French Canadian recipe for Shepparda pie.
I decided to make a more robust version for hunt camp and came across this recipe.
    What a hit!!
I followed the recipe except for the fresh garlic and half and half.
I used the equivalent of 4 to 5 garlic cloves and 4 table spoons of sour cream instead of half and half (probably a lot of butter in the potatoes also.)
    Definitely a keeper!

  115. 5 stars
This is my go-to recipe when I have friends over since it easily feeds a large group of people! I substitute the corn for green beans and it’s absolutely perfect! Always hits the spot – especially now that cold weather is settling in.

  116. I’ve made this before and it was delicious! I’ve recently moved, don’t have an oven and I’m hoping someone could tell me if I could completely do this on the stovetop in a cast iron. I’ve yet to try a baked meal fully on the stove but I’m getting tired of strictly the stovetop. Help??

    1. I do it all in my big Dutch oven on the stove top. Make as directed. After topping with the potatoes just pop the lid on for a few minutes (especially if you add cheese on top). One dirty dish 😊

  117. 5 stars
This is simply delicious! Admittedly, I made a few hacks as I was too lazy to run out to the grocery store, so I used what I had on hand. For the vegetables, I used a 10oz frozen steamer bag of mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, green beans, and corn.) I did not cook it, but thawed it from frozen. I also didn’t have tomato paste on hand so I used ketchup. Finally, I used pre-made mashed potatoes (Bob Evans original.) I prepared the potatoes per the package instructions and then added in the garlic powder and parmesan cheese as directed by this recipe. It was fabulous, hacks and all! Thank you for sharing the recipe! Next time I’ll try to have the called-for ingredients on hand to be true to the recipe!

  118. 5 stars
I love this recipe I have made it loads of times and it’s delicious!! Is it possible to freeze the leftovers? We always have some left, has anyone put the extra in the freezer to reheat at a later date?

  119. 5 stars
Made this for the first time last night. Excellent recipe. The only changes I would add a bit more salt and then more vegetables. Excellent Flavors.

  120. 5 stars
Made this recipe tonight for my husband and I. We absolutely loved it! My husband said it was his favorite Shepherd’s Pie yet! Thank you very much!

  121. I made this for my family and they absolutely loved it. I did add a little of my own seasoning touch. And it made the house smell amazing. I say this because I’m not a chef. I’ve had to teach myself to cook basics.

  122. 5 stars
This was amazing. I am retiring my old recipe😂😂😂. My family loves this one and so easy to make. Makes two and froze one!

  123. 5 stars
Loved it. I eliminated the tomato paste – food allergy. I made a few other changes since I didn’t have all the ingredients but it was still really good. Easy to follow instructions and so much better than my family’s shepherds pie. Thanks for sharing.

  124. 5 stars
This is a simple peasant dish but the recipe is fairly complex – layering on flavor after flavor – and although it’s still in the oven I’ve already tasted both the potato and the stew and I know it’s going to be great. Thank you!

  125. 5 stars
Superb. I followed the recipe but threw in a splash of steak sauce in the meat, put a couple tbsp of parmesan in the potatoes, and layered cheddar on top. Wonderful meal.

  126. 5 stars
Great recipe , it came out 👍 I didn’t have the tomato paste so I just used some pasta sauce., I added some chopped green peppers because I had a bunch. Yummy 😋

  127. 5 stars
Huge hit! My whole family loved this. I omitted the flour, and it turned out fine. I also sprinkled the parm cheese on top instead of mixing into potatoes. Super hearty and flavorful!

  128. 5 stars
Wowwww!! I mean there are no words! This was beyond amazing. However i did add more parm and Mozarella 5 mins before the baking process was over. Best Sheperds pie ive made thus far. Thanks so much for the recipe

  129. 5 stars
We love this recipe; added a few things to the mixture that I had on hand. How do you get the potatoes on top to brown without using the Broil option. Thanks for this.

  130. Would chicken or vegetable broth be an ok substitution for the beef broth? Trying to save a trip to the grocery store!

  131. 4 stars
The wife liked it the first time, so I re-did it tonight. “One dish meal, cool, clean-up will be easy!”. Kitchen looks like a war zone. Granted, running the mashed potatoes through a french mill was OCD. This is a nice recipe, great for a fall meal and can stand re-heating for nights 2 & 3. I have to be careful not to make it too often, but will again.

  132. 5 stars
Recipe is as true to the roots of Shepard’s pie as you get.
Simple to follow and end result is an incredible meal. (Being from UK- I used lamb to make Shepards pie, Va beef making cottage pie).
Good swap/alternative- swap out parmesan cheese for herb/garlic goat cheese crumble or herb/garlic cream cheese in the potatoes.

  133. 5 stars
So like what my made when I was a kid.

Thank you too for noting the difference between shepherd’s pie and cottage pie. 😊

    1. 5 stars
What a great dish! It took me a little longer to prepare but well worth the time. The only change I made was I roasted the veggies.

    1. 5 stars
Have made this several times and is always a huge hit! When my son comes home from the Navy, this is always requested!

    2. 5 stars
My family loves this recipe! It is my go to “Shepherds Pie/Cottage Pie” recipe. I tried using a mix of ground, sweet, Italian sausage and ground beef (my hubby likes it this way). I also added extra veggies, whatever I like; frozen carrots, peas, green beans, corn, diced tomatoes, and my favorite addition, mushrooms (baby bella or white). The mushrooms give it a meaty texture, without adding extra meat. Adding these extra veggies and mushrooms make the dish a bit more healthy and I can make two casseroles, one to eat (with plenty of leftovers) and a second casserole to freeze!

  134. Hi I’ve made the meat mixture which smells divine could you tell me what half and half is is it single cream and milk by any chance thank you from Blackburn England

    1. 5 stars
Just passing through and read your comment, half and half is equal parts cream and whole milk. Hope that helps! 😉

    2. 5 stars
Based on my trips to England, you don’t have anything quite like it. I would explain it as half whole milk/half heavy (whipping) cream. Thicker than milk, thinner than heavy cream. HTH

I like this recipe better than the one I’ve been using — beef broth/gravy rather than regular tomato sauce. I use frozen green beans instead of peas. Really yummy — thanks!

  135. 5 stars
Excellent deep flavor 👌. My family loved it. Very easy to prepare. I used the Costco pre-made mashed potatoes so that was a time saver. I will definitely make this dish again. I added celery and green onions too because I had them on hand and wanted to use them.

    1. 5 stars
First timer for Shepards pie. This got the approval from 3 different generations 🙂 it is requested for Thanksgiving this year. Thank you for sharing!!!!

    2. 5 stars
Very tasty and easy to make.
I cooked and put everything together the day before and baked the”pie” the next evening.
My husband enjoyed it and I am hoping he will enjoy the leftovers, too!
I followed the recipe as written. Next time I might try a cauliflower in place of the potatoes.
Sorry if this has already been addressed, but can this recipe be frozen for meal prep?

  136. 5 stars
Outstanding!!!I am retired and now the cook in our house, love trying new recipes ! This is a go to now!!!
    Thank you

  137. 5 stars
This was, without, the absolute best shepherds pie.
I’ve tried a lot of different recipes. A lot. Many of them were good but it felt like they were… missing something, y’know?
    This one was actually perfect.
    AS-IS.
No changes required. None. Not one.
My incredibly picky child who has never liked shepherds pie LOOOOOOOVED this one. Multiple helpings. Was hoping we’d have leftovers for tonight. Nope, none. Not a single piece. We nearly licked the dish clean.
I s’pose there is one thing I would change next time:
    Doubling it.

  138. 5 stars
My family goes crazy for this dish. I use a mixture of parmesan and an extra sharp Welsh white cheddar in the potatoes and as a topping

    1. Certainly. It just won’t taste as good. I would recommend adding them right before you assemble the pie since they are already so mushy and fully cooked.

    2. 5 stars
You just have to drain them well and wait to add them about 2-3 minutes into the simmer process since they’re already thawed.

  139. 5 stars
This was delish! My whole family loved it and already talking about when I’ll make again! 👍🏼☺️😋

  140. 5 stars
I made this for the first time tonight and it is excellent! I’ve never eaten or made a shepherd’s/cottage pie before. Will definitely be making it again in the future.

  141. 5 stars
This is the best Shepard’s Pie recipe ever! I’ve tried a different one but this one is so delicious and creamy and easy to make! I’ve made it with gold potatoes the last few times and they make the top creamier too. My 90 yr old mom loves this so it’s our new favorite meal! Thanks for sharing!

    1. 5 stars
Our favorite shepherds pie recipe. I usually use 1 tablespoon of herbs de provence instead of the individual herbs listed in the recipe, and sometimes we replace half the potatoes with sweet potatoes. I always need to make a double recipe in a 9×11 pan or else we never have any leftovers.

  142. 5 stars
My family loves this dish! I have made it twice. The second time, I substituted the tomato paste for ketchup (since I was out of tomato paste) and it still worked out well. Side note: for my family of four, I make double that way there are leftovers for lunch the next day.

  143. 5 stars
I have made this recipe a handful of times now. It always turns out delicious, and it’s so easy. Thank you!

  144. This was good but a little bland. Added a 1/2 pkg of mushroom onion soup mix and more beef broth. This is a keeper. Thanks for sharing

  145. 5 stars
Wow! My first attempt at shepherds pie and everyone loved it!!! Definitely added to my list of yummy food to make. Thank you!

  146. 5 stars
This is one of our favorites especially when the weather starts to turn a little chilly. I make it according to the recipe and it turns out beautifully everytime. Wonderful comfort food and not a lot of work. Thank you Amanda for another winner!

  147. 5 stars
Absolutely the most delicious Shepherds Pie I’ve ever made. I didn’t have all the ingredients. Substituted 1 can cream corn and 1 can sweet corn. Didn’t add to the meat, I layered it on top. Used Better Than Bouillon to make my broth. Used tomato sauce instead of paste and no onions. It came out incredible!

  148. 5 stars
Delicious and oh, so yummy! I made it exactly as it was written, and my entire family loved this recipe – even my picky eater son!

  149. 5 stars
This is my first time ever making a cottage pie and the results are fantastic. I followed your recipe and it is absolutely delicious! Thank you.

  150. 5 stars
My kids are addicted to this and can eat almost a whole recipe in one sitting. I follow the recipe exactly except I use half cup each of frozen corn and peas, and 1-1.5 cup fresh finely chopped carrots. Sometimes add a handful of chopped fresh green beans. Very easy and delicious.

    1. 5 stars
Excellent and easy to follow directions.
I made a small change for family preferences. Deleted the corn and peas. Used chopped Celery instead.

Found that the meat mixture was a little bland for my taste. Will increase worcestershire next time.

Loved the taste of the mashed potatoes with parmesean cheese in it.

  151. 5 stars
Soooo good. I added diced fresh portobello mushrooms, and left out the peas. Used ground beef, and used a little bit more Worcestershire sauce. Next time we’ll be adding a bit more the potato as it did create a thin layer.

  152. 5 stars
Great recipe! My grandmother used to make shepards pie for me as a kid, and I always loved it. This is the closest recipe to hers. The only thing I do differently is add biscuits to the pie. I layer my baking dish with biscuits and cook for about 5 minutes than I add the meat, potatoes and cheese. The biscuits go so well topped with brown gravy when done! Awesome recipe, thanks for sharing!

  153. 5 stars
This is a wonderful recipe but the only thing I had different than yours is a cantaloupe tomatoes and before I put the mashed potatoes on top put a can of cream corn mine is off the chain too

    1. 5 stars
In case any vegetarians are looking to try a meatless version, I’m happy to report that this recipe was delicious with beyond beef. I kept everything the same besides that swap.

  154. 5 stars
I didn’t have any beef so I had to use ground Turkey and this was amazing im definitely going to be making this as often as I can without getting sick of it. Literally 10/10 my husband loved it & my toddler even ate it and she is so so picky! Must try

  155. 5 stars
Things I did differently were, used beef bone broth and mixed veggies I had in the fridge. Didn’t add Parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Taste delicious, definitely will make it again. Used lamb.

  156. 5 stars
My sisters and I do a weekly dinner swap and have done so for almost three years. I made this Shepherd’s Pie early on and it has consistently been the most requested repeat dish. It comes together easy and is just so yummy! Thanks for a terrific recipe and easy-to-follow instructions!

ONLY YOUR SHEPHERD PIE IS THE BEST WITH ALL THOSE SEASONS AND EVEN PARMESAN CHEESE ADDED MAKING IT DELICIOUS.MOST PERSON DO NOT SEASON THIER PIE SO IT FAR FROM DELICIOUS YOUR PIE IS FIRST CLASS

Make this for bingo night in a retirement community. They rave over it. Have never had any left over. Thanks for making me a favorite person here.

I use this with half ground lamb and half Venison. Added some extra garlic, And used garlic, mashed cauliflower potatoes. Made it Keto friendly and it was delicious. I’m not keto but my family is and I still enjoyed it.

  160. Hi, I’m making this to take a meal to our son and daughter in laws house. They just had our first grandchild. 🩷 and this is my son’s favorite meal. I also make it GF since he has Celiac disease. Anyway, I am tripling the recipe so I’m wondering if I should use 3 sticks of butter in the potatoes. Seems like a lot!

  161. 5 stars
    Delicious!
I added more worsty-sauce, as I was working with more beef, and A FEW teaspoons of miso. The miso adds a great depth and more umami to beef 🙂

    1. 5 stars
This is the best shepherd’s pie. My husband said he loved this dish. I looked it up on a Google search. He loves it!

    2. 5 stars
This was excellent! I did not have tomato paste, so I used 2 tbs of tomato soup and it still came out very flavorful! Definitely a keeper!

    3. 5 stars
LOL I use instant mashed potatoes, an envelope of baby reds because I am always in a hurry and maybe a little lazy, everyone loves this recipe, the substitution is good for busy weekday meals. 😉

  162. 5 stars
Wonderful! Just like my Mum used to make. I made it in foil dishes for the freezer and pull them out when I’m too tired to cook.

    1. 5 stars
Made this couple of times now and came back here to leave a review. I omitted rosemary and thyme and used Bob Evans traditional mashed potatoes. I highly recommend a family size package. This pie is better with more potatoes. I also sprinkled some thick cut shredded cheddar cheese and broiled the pie for couple of minutes at the end of cooking time. Pie came out beautiful and delicious. Really quick to put together with pre-made potatoes. Hope this helps someone.

  163. 5 stars
This IS the best Shepard’s Pie recipe!! (I was recently going to try another and my husband said “Why?? Nothing can be better than the one you make!”) My family (kids too) love it! It’s my go to for the first brisk Fall day and a frequent meal in the winter!

(For our palettes though I eliminated the rosemary and thyme! )

  164. 5 stars
I use this as my base recipe for venison shepards pie. I add a little extra worcestershire and whip my potatoes to peaks to get nice golden tips when baking. Great go-to recipe!

  165. 5 stars
My husband suddenly decided that he wanted Shepherd’s Pie, which I had never made. This recipe was so easy to follow and the flavor was outstanding! I’ll definitely be making this a regular menu item!

    1. 5 stars
This was so yummy! I didn’t have any tomato paste but I was still really pleased with the result! I’ll add the tomato paste next time!

    2. 5 stars
My go to Shepards pie recipe! I double the recipe and freeze the extra pie for another day! Simple and delicious. Makes a great portable meal for new parents or sick loved ones too!

  166. 5 stars
DELICIOUS RECIPE!! ** I would recommend doubling the amount of potatoes – as the recipe is, the layer of potatoes when spread on top comes out as a very thin layer and the meat mixture kind of boils over the top of the potatoes while it’s in the oven because the layer of potatoes is too thin.

    1. 5 stars
I’ve made this multiple times now for different people and is currently my go to recipe for shepherd’s pie.Nobody has drowned it in ketchup!!!! There’s no need to. The gravy is wonderful and very tasty. I will teach it to my granddaughters, who absolutely love it, so that they will utilize it as their “go to” shepherd’s pie recipe. Thank you for this awesome recipe 😊

  167. Love the shepherds pie. Very easy and fast and the addition of Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste is wonderful

    1. 4 stars
I tried this recipe, it tasted delicious. The only issue was, when cutting the pie, it kind of fell apart lol. How did you get the potatoes to sit firm on top of the meat mixture? Your picture looks like an actually piece cut from a pie.

  168. 4 stars
I would make this again, but with several changes. The basic beef taste with the beef broth was good. But I will definitely use half or less of the rosemary and thyme, only 1 1/2 lbs of potatoes, and use a pan larger than 9X9.

    1. 5 stars
We love this in our house. I’ve done both lamb and beef- I do like the lamb better but can be harder to get. I do cheat though and use the ready made mashed potatoes in the fridge section and heat them up and use on top. This is definitely my go to recipe.

  169. 5 stars
Best shepherds pie recipe I’ve made. I had my mother in law over for dinner last night and everyone loved it. ” so Lovely”…from my mother in law 😍😋💖
    Thank you!

  170. 5 stars
Excellent comfort food. I put it in two pans and froze one for later. The frozen one was better than the first. I also use Bob Evans prepared mashed potatoes. Super easy and So good.

  171. 5 stars
I have made this recently at least 5 times now, and it is 5 star. Absolutely delicious all the way around. Don’t be afraid to modify and improvise as you see fit. I had to add just a touch of water to the meat filling for consistency, and have used different ingredients based on what I have on hand but it always comes out. The seasoning for the meat is delicious. Thank you for this recipe!

    1. 5 stars
First time attempting Shepherds Pie. At first the ingredient list was a little intimidating but I gathered everything together before I started and it was quite easy. I used lamb, also a first for me, and loved the results. I will definitely make this again.

  172. 5 stars
I make it with lamb and it’s delicious. Great shepherds pie recipe, if you like shepherd pie I suggest you try this one. YUMMY

  173. 5 stars
I made this last night for my family, increasing the recipe a bit and I used cheddar cheese. It was delicious, the only problem is there wasn’t enough left for lunch. Thank you for sharing.

  174. 5 stars
What a hit! Since I used 93% ground beef I did have to add a little more beef stock (I also used lower sodium). My husband and I are not fans of rosemary so it was left out all together. It was so balanced and full of flavor! I offered it to everyone available in the house (total of 3 men plus myself) and even the picky eater ate 2 helpings! Nobody added additional table salt either!! Huge win for me!!

  175. 5 stars
I love this recipe. It’s officially in my rotation. It’s honestly perfect as is but I always add a bit more tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce.

  176. 5 stars
My wife made a cottage pie for me and it was pretty good, but I decided to try and make one myself. After making this, she loves this recipe more than her own, (which was her mother’s) Definitely a good meal.

    1. 5 stars
Excellent dish! I was out of Worcestershire Sauce so I substituted with a little A1 Sauce and it still came out delicious. I did also make the potatoes first because it took me a while to peel, cut and boil them, and I didn’t want the meat to be sitting out that long. Doubled the recipe for my family of 6 and it was a hit👍👍

  177. 5 stars
I’ve been eating shepherd’s pie for many decades..if you think about it it’s been 60 years of eating shepherd’s pie, and still not tired of eating it..!!!!🤙🤩

  178. 5 stars
Amazing!!!! I made this tonight and my picky 13 year old, and husband both said put this on the regular rotation. Let’s not get seconds so we can have leftovers for lunch.

  179. I’ve made other Shepherd’s Pie recipes in the past and they’ve always been bland and too juicy or too dry, this one had the perfect amount of spices and liquid, also adding the flour helped to thicken what liquid there was to create more of a gravy than a soup. I appreciated that addition. For the potatoes, I think people need to make them the way they prefer their mashed potatoes. I added a few more potatoes and added more salt, a little cheddar cheese and sprinkled paprika on top before baking. I also went out on a limb and added some French’s crispy fried onions on top of the beef mixture before adding the potatoes, just to add a little umph. I agree with the other comments, it takes longer and makes less than described. I spent exactly 2 hours, from start to finish and it fed 4, and that’s if one of the 4 is a small child so in reality, you’ll probably yield enough for 3 hungry folks. Enjoy! This is a fantastic recipe and one that’s easily tweaked to your taste. That’s what I love about cooking. In Sinatra’s words, “I did it my way”

    1. 5 stars
AMAZING- top 10 of my fave dishes, hands down. I increased recipe by 50% for more servings, used fresh rosemary & added dash of nutmeg to the mashed potatoes; and I’ll add that 1/2 block of cream cheese is another fantastic cheese to use instead of Parmesan too.
Thank you for the great recipe!

    2. 5 stars
Excellent recipe! Made this gluten free, using a heaping tablespoon of potato starch vs the 2 Tbs of flour. I also used instant mashed potatoes to simplify that step, doctoring up per the recipe. Really great flavor all around!

  180. 4 stars
This is a really good recipe that I have made several times. This time I made it for my husband, who is in Rehab following brain surgery. He has not been interested in eating, but tonight when I take some to him, I bet his appetite comes back! I have substituted both already prepared and quick cooked mashed potatoes but nothing beats mashed potatoes from scratch.

  181. 5 stars
Hi, thank you for this recipe! I have made it many times and often gift it as a freezer meal. I am wondering if anyone has made this GLUTEN FREE? What can I use instead of the flour to thicen up the gravy?

    Thank you in advance!!

    1. 5 stars
I made this with gluten-free flour blend (a 1-1 substitute) and it worked great. I would think corn starch, arrowroot, or tapioca flour would all also work well.

  182. 5 stars
Ive never really been good at cooking, i wanted to surprise my husband with a home cooked meal and surprised him with this dish, it turned out phenomenal, he said this was the best thing ive ever cooked before, 10/10!

  183. 5 stars
Made this for my daughter’s 9/1 Harry Potter party, and everyone loved it- teens , 20s, and 50s. 😃 I am making it again tonight for dinner. Tip: Start hearing water for potatoes as the meat cooks to save on time.

    1. 5 stars
I tried it, never having made it before. I didn’t have enough beef. We are a house full of bachelor’s. So I used Jimmy Dean regular sausage to round it out. Made the stick out of that beef bullion paste in a jar. Extra veggies.

I was letting it cool. Came back and they were treating into it. I was lucky to come away with all my fingers attached

      1. Love your critique and humor and am impressed enough with your comments to make it Thurs. evening for a hungry group of assorted aged folks coming for a Bible Study (college students to elderly!) to try it with confidence! Thank you for a great smile!

  184. 5 stars
Loved this! First time cooking a meal I loved when I was back in school, man this hits the spot. Tastes amazing!
Incredible work making the recipe easy-to-follow 🙌

  185. 5 stars
Incredibly delicious! So savory. I used fresh carrots since my family hates peas and they worked beautifully. I used left over mashed potatoes which I had on hand. Just so yummy! Thank you!

    1. 5 stars
Delicious recipe! I made this vegan with TVP, homemade Worcestershire sauce, and soy milk and it was a great dinner for a fall night. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  186. 5 stars
If you want to triple the recipe make sure you check amount of each ingredient because they aren’t all tripled. Look it potato amounts and butter. After corrections it was great

  187. 5 stars
My go to Sheppard’s pie recipe. Made it a hand full on times with whatever leftover meat I had left. Perfect for clearing out the fridge.

  188. 5 stars
I’ve been making Shepard’s Pie for years now but decided to try your recipe. I’m glad I did! My husband loved it. The Parmesan cheese instead of cheddar was a winner. The extra butter in the potatoes made them smooth and flavorful. This recipe is a keeper. Thanks

  189. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing. Full of so much flavor and is easy to prepare. My family loves the taste of this very special dish.

  190. 5 stars
I absolutely loved this! I did add about a teaspoon of A-1 sauce and extra garlic to the beef, and about a 1/4 teaspoon more salt in both layers and pepper in the taters, but I loved this!! I learned the hard way not to make the potatoes first or they’re hard to spread, but it was so delicious anyway! I made this for myself for my birthday dinner. Thank you!!

  191. I made this recipe today. My husband and I both love it. The flavors are great!! The only thing I would say is you need to change your prep time. No way it only takes 20 minutes. I was in my kitchen for 2 hrs. before I even put it in the oven.

  192. 5 stars
I’ve made this for my daughter several times — she really enjoys it!!!! DEFINITELY takes a whole lot longer than 20 minutes to prepare, and I am an experienced cook. Still, definitely worth making! Thank you for the recipe!

  193. 5 stars
This was easy to do, though took longer than my standard and less sophisticated version. The tastiest Shepherd’s Pie I have ever had – seconds were requested all round!

  194. 5 stars
Very good recipe. 2nd time made I cut the herb amounts in half so not as strong tasting. For some family members they liked it better. But truly look forward to eating this Shepherd’s Pie!!!

  195. 5 stars
This has become our favorite shepherd pie recipe! I’ve taken it to a grieving family who was not only appreciative, but they loved it as well. Surprisingly, I don’t have rosemary, so that was left out.
Tonight I used mashed cauliflower in place of the potatoes, so I’m sure it won’t be AS good, because potatoes are just better, but I’m so looking forward to it! 23 minutes to go!
    Thank you.

  196. 5 stars
Made the recipe and everyone loved it. My only lazy “gripe” is that recipes should have a Metric measurement toggle button.

  197. 5 stars
This recipe was delish. The gravy is very savory. I doubled it but only used half a teaspoon rosemary and it tasted heavenly.

  198. Made this in my cast iron and it turned out perfectly! I used about 5 medium sized potatoes, but would probably use 2 more next time. I like a thicker potato layer. Otherwise very delicious!

  199. 5 stars
Amazing recipe I’ve made it three times now and it’s super simple and easy to follow instructions. Each time I make it I make some modifications if I don’t have certain ingredients, and it still comes out flawless. 100% recommend

  200. Freakin delicious! I added a quarter cup of red wine to the meat, omitted the flour, used olive oil instead of butter! Topped the potatoes with bacon bits and Habanero Cheddar cheese. Holy yummy bat man.

  201. 5 stars
Thi sis my “go to” recipe for Shepard’s Pie. I make it all the time. I would only recommend that you chop your rosemary, don’t leave it out, it is an essential flavor. I’ve made this for my husband and me and our kids and everyone loves it Great job on this recipe!

  202. This is absolutely the best shepherd pie recipe! I didn’t have any tomato paste or ketchup. I did have a can of spicy tomato soup. I used that and a beef bullion and an 1/4 cup of water…instead of the beef broth and tomato paste. It is absolutely AMAZING. I’ve made this recipe 6 times in the last two months. Thank you so much!

  203. 5 stars
Delicious! I have made it two times. The only thing I changed was the type of ground meat, because I don’t eat red meat. The first time I used ground turkey, and the second time ground chicken. My husband and I love it!!

  204. 5 stars
YUM! Best shepherd’s pie I have ever tasted! I followed the exact recipe & it turned out great. This recipe is a keeper for sure. Thank you!

  205. 5 stars
This recipe is AMAZING I made this for my family and they loved it! One thing you can do to take this to the next level if you have the time is to put it into a pie crust. Real easy and simple and gives you a crunch in the bite.

  206. 5 stars
Love this recipe; all ingredients readily available. So that kids get a little more vitamins, I added some steamed spinach and frozen broccoli florets.

  207. 5 stars
While I was growing up and my parents had dinner parties any time they served leg of lamb I would pester mom for Shepherds Pie. Of course if I wanted it I had to do some work. I would take the left over leg of lamb and begin to cut of the meat from the bone making sure it was in small pieces and filled up 4 cups of small pieces. Mom used dark gravy instead of beef broth and peas (no carrots). Lastly this was usually a dinner for the kids and just a simple mashed potato topping could have been made with Potato Buds and shredded cheddar mixed in and then laid onto and baked to perfection. (Always up to the chef on times and temps)
All I find in stores is Cottage Pies that they still call Shepherds Pie. I usually ask if they have ever seen a shepherd with a bunch of cows. Simple meal for the family and great way to get children to eat lamb.

  208. 5 stars
I was latter afraid of the rosemary, as itcould overwhelm. However, made as written and this was delicious! Thanks

  209. 5 stars
Made this with chopped left-over leg of lamb meat….very tasty. 5 Stars for sure. Broiled it on high the last 4 minutes to get a top crust that was browned and a tad crispy.
Have used several recipes thru the decades….this is the best. Highly recommend….except if you are on a diet…cuz you will overeat if this is your dinner.
If you want a airy potato topping, take two egg whites, whip them, add them to the mashed potatoes and gently stir in….it will brown a bit better and be more fluffy of a topping. Not necessary with this excellent recipe…just an add if desired.

  210. 5 stars
Can’t wait to make this tonight; quick question though,..do you not drain the meat after it’s done cooking?!

  211. 5 stars
Was good! I used soy sauce in replacement of worcestershire as I didn’t have thar on hand, didn’t add rosemary as I’m not a fan of that herb. Used ketchup instead of tomatoe paste, as I didn’t want to open a can and waste the rest. Even though I didn’t follow to a T, still turned out well.

  212. 5 stars
When involuntary yum sounds are all that can be heard, you know it’s a hit. Absolutely delicious!

  213. 5 stars
This dish was delicious. Was my first time making a shepherds pie. We added a pork mince into the beef mix and actually did more mince. My family enjoys spice so we added extra paprika, Cayenne pepper and cumin. Loved the base of the dish and a great idea to work from. Thank you so much.

  214. 5 stars
Just finished supper. This recipe is definately 5+ stars. My brother and I throughly enjoyed every bite! Followed the recipe as printed. Yummy!! Thanks so much!!!!

  215. Thank You! or Merci beaucoup!
I printed out your recipe and will seal it since this classic is worth using and keeping :-)).
    Love – Martha

So far the best Shepherd’s Pie recipe I’ve tried. The proportions are just right and the instructions are detailed and clear. Thanks Amanda for sharing your recipe with us. 😍👍🏻

    1. 5 stars
Keep coming back to this recipe because it’s a winner! It’s so good my 5 year old son requested it for his birthday dinner, and that’s saying a lot. Thank you!

  217. 5 stars
Mom used to make this a couple times a month. So glad to find this recipe! It’s on my list of dishes to make ahead of time next month.

  218. 5 stars
This was truly the best and easiest Shepherd’s Pie recipe yet. I might add a few more veggies, just cuz. Otherwise this was a pleasure to make, serve, and eat.

  219. 5 stars
I make a version that I call flockers pie. We raise mudcovy ducks. Substitute ground duck. Works quite well.

  220. 5 stars
Fantastic recipe! I never leave comments but this totally deserves it. Made this for my husband and I and we had trouble not finishing the entire pan. It was even better the second day. I didn’t have frozen carrots so I steamed some fresh and they were perfect in the dish. Can’t wait to make this again!

  221. 5 stars
Love this. Make again and again!!! Tonight i did use ketchup instead of paste (didnt have any) and still great!!!

  222. 5 stars
This dish is very good however the “Prep time” is not accurate unless you have someone else assemble everything. I don’t mind spending time creating a meal but a more accurate prep time would be appreciated in the future. The filling is delicious and so is the potato topping, I will make this again and again, but will reduce the amount of potatoes (maybe my two large potatoes were too large).

  223. This is the best Shepherds pie recipe I’ve found. This is a keeper, I cook for people and they just love it. Thank you!.

  224. 5 stars
I tried your “The Best Sheperds Pie,” recipe and my family loved it. Thanks for the recipe it was delicious and easy to make.

  225. 5 stars
I love this recipe! It is so easy to make and just as tasty. I used my cast iron skillet to make the meat filling, bake the dish, and had one less dish to wash

  226. 5 stars
Great recipe! I used ground turkey and chicken broth. I skipped the Worstershire. Insptead of the tomato paste and flour, I added a 16 oz jar of garden vegetable soup. For other veggies, I used a frozen corn, carrot, green beans combo. I’ve made it for my household and to take to a friend recovering from shoulder surgery. She is quite a good cook; her father, a chef taught her much. She said this was the best Shepherd’s pie she’d ever had. Thanks for a great recipe. 😊

  227. 5 stars
It really is the best Shepard pie recipe ever! Prepared exactly as written, wouldn’t change a thing. Delicious ultimate comfort food!!

  228. 5 stars
I use 1# each of lean ground beef and lamb. A whole head of garlic, fresh parsley. Note: the recipe#2 says a 7×11 pan. Never gonna happen. It overflows a 9×13. I mound the spuds down the center to use them all, once the pan is covered.

  229. 5 stars
    A definite keeper
Added a can of mushroom soup on top of vegetables. The seasoning was spot on. Will fix this again.

  230. I have made this recipe a couple of times. It is my go to, love the smell of lamb, cause I love it. The leftovers are amazing, thank you so much for a great recipe.

  231. 5 stars
Wow, this was really good! I used instant potatoes for the topping. I don’t usually eat a lot, and I went back for thirds! Definitely going to add this to the recipe box.

  232. 5 stars
EXCELLENT!! Terrific recipe!! Made it 4 times recently for friends and neighbors. Everyone loves it!! Thank you!!!

  233. 4 stars
Great recipe. Save yourself a little time and frustration and make yourself a good rue before you start. Recipe leaves things a tad wet for my taste. But the flavors are great. I used chopped beef and made a stock from bone marrow. So good.

  234. 5 stars
Love this recipe, super easy to put together and flavorful. I use ground lamb because I love lamb but I made it with lean ground beef too and that’s just as good. This is a recipe that if you have a helper can be made faster such as one grating cheese or chopping onion and garlic and prepping potatoes. While my fiancé browns the meat I add the herbs and other ingredients. Total comfort food and no need to serve with anything else except maybe a small salad.

  235. 5 stars
made this for senior community bingo and every one, and I mean every one, loved it and requested the recipe saying it was the best they ever had! It is in my recipe file.

  236. 5 stars
Delicious! I even added some red wine in with the stock and can’t believe how good this is.
    Definitely will make it again

  237. 5 stars
Honestly! This recipe is SO good. We made it for a church group tonight and they were coming up for seconds.

  238. 5 stars
I’ve got the pie in the oven! The only thing I didn’t have was half and half but it’s not going to hurt the dish. It’ll be enough for leftovers too!! My family is going to love it, I just know.
